I'm originally from B.C. and I'm currently third year at UofT. It's hard to make some good friends who can help you throughout your studies but it is possible. I find myself helping my friends more often than them helping me. Long story short, it's more like independent studying for students. Learn by yourself using online resources, textbook readings and lecture slides and RUclips videos. I would say it is academically competitive, but I realized that most students I met don't really read any of the textbooks, readings and only study from the lecture slides. Marks wise, if you've done the readings, practice problems and understood the concepts, you should get around 3.7-4.0 in your courses (or at least 3.3) . I would say first year courses are the easiest compared to third year courses and fourth year courses. Fourth year courses are seminar-based classes with smaller class size so the professor gives more attention to each student. These courses are usually research based, or thesis-based courses that requires you to do independent research, primary literature search and writing. First year course averages are usually C+ because students have hard time transitioning from high school, but fourth year thesis-based courses have around B to B+ course averages because of smaller class size and more academically selective students. I did pretty well like A- in my fourth year courses and I was surprised that the course average was so high. I would say the most challenging part of studying is reading. People say, "oh you just do the readings and you will be fine." But reading is a skill that takes time to develop. You will be expected to do a lot of readings on your own time, reflection and writing (maybe not so much in math, econ or comp sci) but reading is a valuable skill.
I don't know how I stumbled across your channel, however, this reminds me of a time in hospital and a resident doctor informed me he was from Vancouver. I asked, "How do you like Toronto?" First thing that came out of his mouth was, "I haven't made any friends." I don't know why, but it stuck with me. Even until this day. I've always been the type of person to make friends easily. And, even when it came it the outcast of the school, I would still engage with them. I guess to some it could be overwhelming in a new school - all by yourself. You give a lot of worthy infotmation. Thank you!
Big facts. It's all about balancing academia with social life. After one finds the perfect balance, it is not at all difficult to build strong and lasting friendships at UofT.
I'm glad you had a good experience, I'm going into university next year and wanted to learn more about uni life. Unfortunately, out of like the 7 or 8 people I watched who talked about their experience at U of T, you are the first one to say that it is not hard to make friends and that the school is not depressing lol.
Can you also talk about dorm bathrooms? Are they coed? How does keeping up with your hygiene work in res? Are there any unwritten rules to follow etc..? Also, I would be really interested in seeing the music rooms that students can rent (?), especially the room with the drumset.
Great question again, so if you watch my other video "A day in the life of a University of Toronto student" you will be able to see a little bit of the common dorm washrooms. At New college the dorm washrooms are gender inclusive and during the first few weeks of your residence life you will have a chance to build a community rule with your floor don. I believe they clean the washrooms every morning so hygiene isn't terrible. I am not too sure what the rental procedures are so I suggest that you contact the university directly. I hope I was able to help a little and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Thank you for your kind words, I am very glad my videos were able to help. Me and my friends are also talking about making more videos in the future so hopefully after this whole COVID-19 situation I can meet up with them👍👍
I can only say one thing if people are in first year of any university, when i made most of my friends was in 3-4 year (grad student now) and I will have these friends probably for the rest of my life. First of all congratulations on your acceptance and thank you so much for your kind words! I am so glad my videos were able to help you a little😁 I wish the best of luck to you in the future!!
I think part of the reason why they wanna keep a certain average is because of prestige? Like if too many students are acing their classes then they'd be an 'easier' university and thus gets less applications which in turn puts their rank down? Idk it's only my theory
Hi, thank you for making this helpful video!!! I would be REALLY interested to see you vlog the food at the UofT cafeteria at new college!! I haven't found any specifics about the type of food they have even though it's supposedly the college with the best food. I'm just curious to see what the cafeteria looks like and the different variety of foods. I would also like to judge the quality of the food for myself and would feel safer purchasing a meal plan if I knew what the food looked like.
First of all thank you for your kind words and that's a great suggestion. I was actually thinking of making that video until I had to move out of my dorm due to COVID-19. I will definitely try to make those vlogs in the future. However to tell you about the food, I personally really enjoyed it. However that's just a personal preference so not everyone may agree with me. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I really want to apply to U of T this year, and me as an international student was very scared of not being able to make friends at all, so thank you very much for this video (and all the other ones too cause I've already seen all your videos about U of T haha). I know its only your opinion and it may be hard for me to make friends but this video really calmed me down. Keep doing videos like these!! :) I do have a question tho, can you please tell me when started the application period last year? Is it in December? Im truly confused with how the Canadian system works cause is very different than here in Brasil. Anyway, bye!!
Great question and thank you so much for your kind words. So the application process always starts around October and ends around December. Depending on the program you are applying to there might be multiple steps in your application process. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know!
Great question, so since I am a business school student at St. George my knowledge on Scarborough CS program is weak. So to find out more information, I suggest that you contact the university directly. Sorry that I couldn't answer your question but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Great question, so there are definitely pros and cons of going to UofT if you are thinking of going to a grad school in the future. As you already know, its very hard to get good grades in University of Toronto and to go to grad schools you need good undergrad GPA. So if you go to a university that is not as rigorous as UofT , that may put you in a better spot in terms of marks. However UofT will well prepare you for grad schools because you will already be trained on how to work under immense work load at UofT. It builds you a great mentality and I think that's the biggest thing they teach you at UofT. So think about these pros and cons, and think about what you really want to learn in undergrad. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in the future!
Great question, so I think it all depends on the professors but if you visit them in their office hours you will get to know them better. Hey, I’m currently in my last year of high school completing a French baccalauréat. I’m eligible to go into sophomore year directly with my transfer credits from the bac but I really don’t know if I should! Is it too much to handle? Should I do it and save a year? Does anyone know?
First of all that's very impressive, so since I don't know anyone who went directly into their sophomore year, I can't give you a good advice on this. Maybe someone who will be watching this video in the future can give you a better advice on your question, but the best thing I can suggest for you right now is to contact the university directly. Sorry that I couldn't answer your question but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Hi! I'm also French Bac, but I never knew that you could go directly into 2nd year! Yes, with the credit transfer you would have a lighter 1st year, but your grades must be EPIC😂. With the Contrôle Continu, check with ur school advisor, and if u can save a year, do it!
@@arbeiz1 hahah salut!! enft je me suis trompé, you can't skip the whole year. I'm still trying to understand how the whole transfer credit thing works though.
Hey Richard! How is uni life for commuters? I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to balance my life because commuting obviously isn’t the most convenient. Do you think I will still be able to participate in event/clubs?
There are lots of students I know who commute and keep up with school & clubs, so I am sure you can do the same👍👍! I don't think being a commuter will put you in a disadvantage so don't worry about it too much!
hey wanna ask u about scholarship this year i have bachelor and me as an international student wanna know when started the application period this year 2020 2021 so if you can help i appreciate that thankss
Great question, so the university application should open around October every year (however this depends on universities as well). They will give you the specific start and end date of the applications so make sure to check these important dates. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Great question, so I don't usually go to parties since I enjoy holding events for students more. I had a great privilege to be the first year representative for my college and an intern at RCSA. Through these two positions I was able to give back to the community and I personally enjoyed that more. However, you definitely do get time to attend events and parties so don't worry about that (As I said in my video we are not robots 😂😂). I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Awesome video! You stayed at New College? How was it? Would you recommend it? I didn't want to apply for Chestnut because it seems like it was a bit off campus. Once again great video.
Thank you for your kind words, it really means a lot to me. So yes I stayed at New College (45 Willcocks) and overall I really enjoyed my experience living there. I was able to meet lots of my friends and it was cool to live by myself along with many students. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
It really depends on the class/professors so it's really hard to give you an average level. Some courses are definitely more challenging than others so make sure to do some research beforehand👍!
I'm trying to decide whether to accept my offer of admissions, and I have until the end of April. If the pandemic is still going on this September, do you have any idea if the dorms will still be available to stay in, since I live in a different province?
Great question, so I definitely think you should take your time to choose which university to go to. Its a big decision and I hope you make the right decision for yourself. In terms of dorms, I think if the university opens, the dorms should open as well. So if UofT resumes in September, the dorms will mostly likely to do the same. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Hey Richard, I was wondering if you know any information about the geography and environment sections at UofT? Have you heard anything good or bad about them? Are they tough or easy programs?
Great question, so since I am a business school student my knowledge in geography/environment is not that strong. However I can tell you that most programs at UofT are strong so my guess would be that geography/environment is strong as well (it’s probably challenging as well). Sorry that I couldn’t answer your question well but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Richard Han Thankyou so much! I actually had another question I’m confused on. When I applied I thought I was applying for geography. However, When I got the acceptance it said I was accepted in social sciences. Does this mean I can now chose any social science pathway as long as I take the suggested courses? For example, I can take environmental management and geography if I wanted too?
@@cmbmcb7091 Once again I am pretty weak in this area but you should have a freedom of choosing your courses as long as you fulfill all the prerequisites or suggested courses. For me I was able to take psychology and HR course as an elective after fulfilling all my requirements for Rotman. So I would guess it the same for social sciences as well. However please contact the university about this question to confirm it. If you have any further questions please let me know and I hope I was able to help a bit!
U mentioned how it’s easy to make friends as a large number of people belong to the same college however engineering students don’t have a college so does that make it impossible for engineering students to make friends? And also do u know any engineering student who u can bring on ur channel?
Yes great question, so I was originally going to get more of my friends (including engineering student) to be in one of my videos, but due to COVID-19 I can't do that anymore. So I will make that video whenever I can meet up with my friends again. In terms of making friends if you are an engineering student, I heard its pretty much the same as everyone else. My engineering friends are also very kind and accepting and they said that they didn't have trouble making friends. I do agree that since engineering students don't have colleges they might have a little bit of harder time than Art&Sci students, but my friends seemed to manage it through clubs and socials. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Great question, I heard a mixture of both good and bad. Sometimes I will hear that a party was really boring and other times I will hear that they were good. So I think it all depends on the parities you go to. I hope I was able to answer your question and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Great question, yes whether or not if you are an international student or a domestic student English marks are very crucial. The university doesn't want to check if you can speak English or not (they do that through English proficiency test) but rather your ability to professionally speak/read/write English. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Great question, although since I am a bachelor's level student I don't know much about Masters but I would recommend UBC. I heard UBC offers great masters program and it's known to be one of the top universities in Canada/World. I apologize if my answer wasn't that clear but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in your future!

Hey.. Pls could you confirm this for me? Well I was born in canada so literally I'm a canadian, but i study here in srilanka for 13 years.. Now I'm planning to come back to Canada for my higher studies and should I apply as an international student or a local? If it's the local way how do you apply?
That's a great question, so that's a really complicated story. I don't want to give you any wrong information so I would suggest that you contact the university directly about this. I am sorry I couldn't answer your question but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
@@michellesilva8220 Sure, economics degree in uoft is pretty popular. I have to take some econ courses since I am a business school student and so far I found all the econ courses pretty challenging. You can major/minor in econ and I think its a fascinating but hard subject.
Great question, although this really all depends on what kind of schedule you have but for me I took a lot of extracurricular activities in my first year so I didn't really have that much free time. I say I was in class about 15-17 hours/week and 5-6 hours/week of extracurricular activities. I want to emphasize that this will be different for every student. Great question, so since I am a business school student I only had a little bit of experience with the psychology department. I took PSY 100, which is an introductory course for psychology and I really enjoyed it. It was a really big class (over a 1000 student) and I liked the content. I heard UofT's psychology is known to be one of the best in the world so if you are thinking of majoring in psychology I think its a great idea to come to UofT. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
@@RichardHan Yeah I'm planning on majoring psychology! However, I accidentally applied for humanities, which I believe doesn't include psychology. Will I be waitlisted if I sign up for the course?
@@pinktiffyt3478 You will be wait-listed If the course you are trying to take is already full. Some courses are restricted so that students in certain programs can have priority. So unless there are specific courses that are restricted I don' think you will be wait-listed. If you have anymore questions please let me know!
Thank you that's a great idea, although if it helps I made another video called "University Budgeting how to save money on textbooks & more". I will definitely make another video on expenses and scholarships/financial aid. Thank you for your idea👍👍

@@RichardHan ahh I understand
Thank you so muchhh💙💪
So do you get time to get to most of those parties or events
@@RichardHan You're super friendly! Replied to all my comments haha. It makes me feel important. Stay safe and have a nice day!
Richard Han hey man, same here
You said that some professors want to keep marks at a certain level. What level would that be?
Richard Han thank you so much! Great video
What about the party scene man? A lot of people say that UofT party scene is terrible.
Great question, I heard a mixture of both good and bad. Sometimes I will hear that a party was really boring and other times I will hear that they were good. So I think it all depends on the parities you go to. I hope I was able to answer your question and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Hi..do they really consider your English grades before accepting you to u of t? If your a domestic student?
Great question, yes whether or not if you are an international student or a domestic student English marks are very crucial. The university doesn't want to check if you can speak English or not (they do that through English proficiency test) but rather your ability to professionally speak/read/write English. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Richard Han so they do not consider eng MARKS do they?
@Michelle Silva Yes they do consider your English marks👍👍
Hi I’m interested to do Masters in Vancouver
Please can you suggest Any Good College/University in Vancouver
Thank You
🌷👌🏻🌸🙏🏻
Great question, although since I am a bachelor's level student I don't know much about Masters but I would recommend UBC. I heard UBC offers great masters program and it's known to be one of the top universities in Canada/World. I apologize if my answer wasn't that clear but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in your future!
Richard Han
Thank You for your reply. Please can you give me any idea about how to apply. Did you applied yourself or through an agent. Also do you have any idea about scholarship?
Thank You

Hey.. Pls could you confirm this for me? Well I was born in canada so literally I'm a canadian, but i study here in srilanka for 13 years.. Now I'm planning to come back to Canada for my higher studies and should I apply as an international student or a local? If it's the local way how do you apply?
Could you also tell me a bit more about economics degrees in u of t?
That's a great question, so that's a really complicated story. I don't know if the university will consider you as an international student because you studied abroad or a domestic student since you were born in Canada.
@@RichardHan thank you
You should apply as a Canadian student. I have a similar experience as well, born in Canada but living in another country my whole life.
How much free time do you have every week and how much lessons do you have every week
I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Does UofT take entrance exam?
How many international students are in u of t?
Great question, I searched it up and it says there are over 19K international students in uoft👍👍 I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!
Richard Han thanks a lot! Your videos are very helpful. I’m from Russia and I’m planning to study at UofT Mississauga
Sounds awesome! And thank you so much for your kind words👍👍!
Thanks for making these videos! Do you know what psychology at UofT is like and can you tell me more about it?
Hey! Can you do a video on how expensive UofT is? And how easy is it to get scholarships/financial aid for international students. Thanks!
Thank you that's a great idea, although if it helps I made another video called "University Budgeting how to save money on textbooks & more". I will definitely make another video on expenses and scholarships/financial aid. Thank you for your idea👍👍
