As always great content. I've got 3 plots all with green covers summer blend. 2 of them did well in lower areas. The 3rd plot was on a hilly area and didn't do so well with the lack of precipitation this summer. It had alot of grass. That's when I decided to spray the 1 plot and planning on drilling the other 2 in a few weeks. Gonna take your advice and bump up my seed rate this year. Thanks for sharing
We played with this last year with broadcasting, spraying, then running it over a million times with a truck and tractor. IT WORKED!! So this year we're stepping up. We're about to buy a crimper. And we're going to double our plot size now that we know it'll work. In years to come, we'll get a no till drill. We're just having to take small steps. Thank you for your knowledge. And thank you for standing for Christ Jesus
I allow the growth of curly dock, broad leaf dock, and dandelion in all my plots. Its native browse here grows all year long and deer love it, just keep it mowed to encourage new growth and fertilize those nut and fruit trees
Read the label on your herbicide. Although labels for Glyphosate vary with chemical %. A half gallon for 100 gallons usually works, which is infected by calibration of your sprayer. If you don’t understand how to calibrate your sprayer, they’re 1000 RUclips videos out there. With that being said your local extension service can help you because only about 15% of those videos make sense.
Unfortunately, disking always creates a hardpan. If the soil is left with plants on it rain seeps down the root, worm, etc., holes and more water is retained. We often say "it's not how much it rains, it's how much we keep on site!' With disking, there will likely be erosion from wind and/or rain.
So if you are mixing your glyphosate at a 2% solution per tank do you even worry about GPA or amount of gly per acre ? I always read that around 2 quarts per acre of gly is what you need for burn down. But if just mixing a 2% solution would work, That would be a lot simpler. But I imagine the amount of product per acre would vary greatly upon sprayer output.thoughts ?

Speaking as a farmer lime definitely is important but it is nowhere near the top of the list. Most TV personalities have made that their go-to sell for good food plots.

My question is I have field full crabgrass I want to plant clover and winter rye but I don't have drill but I do have disk but I don't want use it can I just spray the weeds and broadcast the clover seed and winter rye after I spray it and not cover it? Thank you
I use quality blends with forage species with both deep and fibrous roots to break up hardpans. Mechanical means always results in increasing or creating a hardpan just a bit deeper than the plow or ripper reaches. Roots and bugs do a great job of creating tunnels all through the soil. They are the world's best tillers!

Would you suggest spraying glyphosate and then just throwing out the Fall Release and cultipacking over it? Would this suffice without a drill?
I really don't want to disc, and I probably can't get a seed drill this year. We are having a lot of work done on the property we bought in 2021, big pond & removing invasives. Planning on planting rye to hold the soil, then clover & brassicas for this fall. What are my best options for planting into the ground that has been run over by the excavator & bulldozers but still has bits of branches & roots all over? After most of the work has been done it all looks like clay with heavy equipment track prints in it.

It's frustrating how difficult it is to explain a lot of these concepts to folks who "plant like grand-daddy did". Not only are they hurting their soil and limiting their chances at success, they're putting more time and money into less effective processes.
Goodness - why are you upset? Should we use the best techniques we can if possible? I disked before I could rent a drill. Then I could afford to purchase a drill. The NRCS rents drills in most states throughout the whitetail's range.

You are correct - this varies by the gallons per acre and the sprayer's nozzle size, etc.

Steve - you can spray and then broadcast seed! The best results when broadcasting seeds usually occurs when the seed is spread just before a rain.
So what are the options if your ground is already suffering with hardpan?

Broadcast before a rain - but not a heavy rain where the seeds will wash off the plot.

Unfortunately, prescribed fire won't terminate stilt grass.

I don't either. Most NRCS offices (one in most counties) rent drills. I broadcast seed in many plots I can't get a tractor to.

It's less expensive to buy a side off beef.
But not here as healthy for our families to consume!
