These videos are outstanding. Purchased 50ac last year and on 2nd year following the food plot videos. Prevented me from getting sucked into to gimmick stuff on the market
I have always planted a cover crop for my garden bed every year to build up soil and keep weeds at bay. Never ever thought about using this on deer fields. We have always Bushhog, disc, seed, disc seed back in. This is what we have always done here in Alabama. I spend more time of heaven equipment repairs. I love this system. Actually it’s more cost effective. Thanks

Yes that plot start is amazing. I just used a jug on my soybean field and they turned out amazing, I also got plot boost I'm going to wait to use that with my other jug of plot start. Thanks for explaining out the spreading of the different seeds.

Ive been planting soybeans on top of the ground for years and have always had great success! They last all the way until February with heavy deer browse. You know that from my EZ plots. Happy to help Jeff, good luck this year!

Jeff this is the best video you have ever uploaded. Please take some footage of planting your WI plots. I know it’s pretty much the same process but please do it anyway. Us viewers love the on ground physically moving videos like this. It make us feel like we are there part of the action. Please also upload updates when things start growing and when you seed the winter rye in early September.
IMHO this is one of the best videos you've done so far, and you have a lot of great content. It is good to see so many different applications of your concepts. Any time you can add a few nuggets of info for those of us in the southeast or more southern locations the better, thanks again.

I agree with the southeast tips. When should we plant the buckwheat? I want to adopt this system. Right now we just let the weeds take over and till because we thought that was our only real option without a drill. Soybeans can't keep up with the browse so I want to try buckwheat for summer cover crop. Do the deer ever eat the buckwheat?
@@brianboyett6250 I was surprised to see that they do in my area, but there isn't much native browse either. They do prefer other things like cow peas, radish, and cereal grains more...oh yeah, sunflowers are their favorite.

I sprayed a field, tilled it, then broadcast milo. I came back the next day with the sprayer and cultipacker and did both at the same time. Got a good weed free food plot now.
I'm trying sorghum over corn due to the fact there's nothing for them to eat until October or later and it won't get destroyed early like corn. Spraying gly as you plant is a great method.

Great video. I'm in KY and spray gly-41 with creek water all the time I've never had an issue--always get good results.
I spent 2 years part- time while in college testing and developing test methods for many herbicides. I love Jeff's videos and he has taught me much. When it comes to herbicides he is right 90% plus. The type of water used does make a minor difference but usually is not a game stopper. I personally like to use soft water with a surfactant. But if soft water was not easy for me to get I would use hard water, rain water, pond/stream water provided I could do so with out plugging up my sprayer. Most important when using any herbicide is to use the PPE. I personally like to wear my respirator (not just a dust mask), rubber gloves, and goggles.
Don't work for me. I have to spray tap water or filtered water or I get a horrible kill rate.
Nice job with this one, Jeff. Got my brassica & oats in last weekend. Used the packermaxx over it and sprayed. Been using the plot start for two years along with the plot boost. It does work and minimizes the time & effort when the plots are on the other side of a swamp.

I agree with Paul, this is your best video yet! You’ve said in the past that when using buckwheat you like it in the 6-8 week growth range for this method of planting. What do you do before that early June time frame with your soil? Have you double planted buckwheat to maintain the weed control so you don’t ever have to work the soil?
Diane wants first crack at the droptines, so she’s putting the labor in! Good to have a helper for sure!

Real curious about the plot start. I’ve tried it before but never really saw a benefit. But this was early on in my food plotting. Think I’ll try it again.

Got my food plots planted last weekend in mid Michigan 1 day before the rain. Maybe a few weeks early but I couldn’t pass up the rain after this summer drought. My spring plots all burned up. So sprayed them all and now have fresh seed down for ladino clover, alfalfa plots. Also new brassica plots including rape, turnips, radish. Planted some oats and rye and will follow up with more oats, rye first of Sept. Have also sprayed for spring switch grass plots prep. Sadly I drove over my Earthway with the tractor but after I was finished. 😂😩

not having a packermax, I used my back blade on my tractor, to knock down the buckwheat, spin it around, and drag it around the plot--- worked great ! Better than the luck you had getting her out of the air conditioning on to the sprayer job in the hot sun Lol

My buckwheat got completely droughted out on my first ever plots this year :( Hoping my Northwoods brassicas, clover, and rye will take! I've been able to manage the weeds really well. Got my lime down 2 weeks ago. Are you using any fertilizer in your new plots or are you just using the DeerGro plot start?

With great weed control you sure have a great chance...those seeds should all take very well 👍 I am using the Plot Start in place of lime...can't wait to see how it works. I will use Plot Boost too when the plants are growing...but not as a substitute to fertilizer...just helps the plants to use the fertilizer more efficiently. Hope that makes sense!
We did 2 small plots 2 weeks ago and did a corn bean in june here Wisconsin

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I have been using a free app "Field Navigator" to determine food plot acreage. You can use it for planning new areas and then also walk the perimeter of the plot using your phone GPS and get the exact size to be planted. You can also use the planting width tracking portion of the app but i haven't tried it yet.
You can use as a pre emergent , prodiamine , and diothiopyr as a post emergent for weed control. This is used on many residential areas. Prodiamine is layed when soil temps are at 55 degrees for the first app and at 65-70 degrees for your 2nd app. We then spray bio stimulants like rgs ,air 8, humic n microgreene for root growth n color.
I needed this video, Jeff! You’re the man for the timely publishing of this video. I know you mentioned using urea but do you ever recommend the application of any granular fertilizer? If so what kind for the brassicas/radishes/turnips?
Jeff, this is definitely one of the best videos yet, especially for someone who is very new to food plots like me. Two questions for you though. The place where I would like to plant a plot next year is currently very weedy, i would think if you sprayed that area, there would be so much dead debris, do you just leave it there or rake it up? Lastly for a brand new plot how do you know what you should plant. Im in Southwestern PA btw. Keep up the great work.

Jeff I planted buckwheat first week of June upstate ny. I'm using your no till system. Its been awesome so far and I planted my fall crops August first and smashed the buckwheat on the seeds after! I will be making a video step by step and all credit goes to you for your no till system. Once the video is posted ill let you know. Have you tried winfred brassica? I have then planted in my brassica mix plot thanks again!

I have to say though, I’ll have to spray myself real good to keep the chiggers and seed ticks off here in middle Tennessee ... They’re bad here!! Lol
I got into seed ticks last year in Southern Indiana. Horrible.
Like to use a little handheld spreader to do brassicas. Put half in and try to cover whole plot and do other half going crossways.

Jeff, I just started planting a food plot this year because of your videos! Thanks for the videos. I threw down some seed two weeks ago, a little early for southwest Ohio/ southeast Indiana. I put basic greens for now since we have some soy bean and corn fields. How would you go about planting a plot in a wide valley in between crop fields?

I have watched a lot of your videos Jeff, they're all awesome! I noticed in other videos you say not to plant rye with brassicas but in this video you plant rye around labor day on top of the tilled radish. Will this stunt the growth of the tilled radish? I am starting my food plots for the first time this year so i am using this method and going to start the buckwheat no-till method next year.
Great tips Jeff. We are trying the no til this year with some oats and clover. We want to try rye in a new plot we've been prepping. Do you have a particular brand or rye brands that you've had the most success with? I'm finding some bad mixes with rye grass fillers and obviously want to avoid them. Keep up the great content and thanks for your dedication, sharing your knowledge.
Great information! If the ground is hard should I wait for rain to plant then cultipacker the seed to have better seed contact?

Thank you very much! That's great with your peas ☺️ You have to be very careful with peas tho...they need a LOT of water to get germinate and grow without being covered by soil. May work ever 2-3 years but not every year...

I tried your ultimate no-till. Thought the buckwheat was out of control, but it looked just like yours. I crimped in the morning and buckwheat was loaded with dew and moisture. Let's see how it works. I'll send you vids!
I have a clover plot I kind of use like your buckwheat except I'm 5 years in and have not had to replant I mow it twice a year last time August 1st with a flail mower spread my turnips radish and beet blend and my clover is thick enough it holds a large amount of moisture and it seems to stunt the clovers growth just enough to let my seed blend take off. It also seems to block out other weeds

My Whitetail Forage Radish from Northwoods Whitetail says to plant 8 lbs per acre if planted alone or 4 to 5 lbs if mixed. You said in the video to plant 8 lbs per acre with 2-3 lbs of brassica. Later in the video you said to cut in half both seeding rates. Should the radish be planted at 4 to 5 lbs per acre or 8 lbs per acre? I appreciate the videos Jeff. I'm learning a lot!

Awesome stuff per usual. Just planted the WHS blend into my standing buckwheat yesterday and rolled down. Am I going to have issues with the buckwheat as it actually seeded out? Inside the hauls was a cotton like core, I don’t think the seeds actually formed. Thoughts? Thanks for your time.
Awesome video. I would love to convert to no till plots and I am considering trying buckwheat on my plots here in Central TX next spring. However, I expect the buckwheat to be dead from heat and drought by early July. Should I just let it sit until mid September before crushing it and planting my fall seeds? Thanks!
Hi Jeff great video with a ton of information. I have two questions I am hoping I can answer for me. For the plot start are u adding that to it glyphosate in the same sprayer at the same time and spraying or are u spraying one then cleaning the sprayer and spraying the next? Second what is the typical seeding rate for brassicas 3lbs per acre, 6lbs per acre?

Thanks for the video Jeff. I ran into a problem last year with spreading those small brassica seeds .... seemed not enough and then I’d open it up a little and it was too much dispersed. This year the sweet feast suggested using 6-24-24 fertilizer so I saved some of the fertilizer and filled the spreader with it and then added the bag of the brassica blend and mixed it up thoughly into the bag. This enabled me to open the spreader to the 3 setting and I’m hoping it evenly spread the small brassica seeds. I have no results yet on how it worked but what do you think of this practice?
Hey Jeff i will be planting your WHS mix this weekend. I wasn't able to do the buckwheat and have bare soil. I was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction to get it planted on bare soil. I have the soil tilled, was thinking it I was to seed, then drag, then cultipack over it that might put the seeds at a good depth? Let me know what ya think. Thanks for all the great content.
