I had the great pleasure to watch Ermonela Laho singing yesterday in Suor Angelica at Liceu de Barcelona. People could not even wait to cheer her till the end. Her performance was delightful, thanks for the evening. That was an absolute overwhelming catarsis when the audience had the chance to applause in the end.

I heard her perform this at the ROH and nothing I've watched there has moved me more. What you don't get from hearing this is just how beautifully her voice carries in the house and I was in the upper slips. We could hear every note and the feeling behind them. The memory will stay with me forever.

She has something very special-A pure unadorned commitment to the character. Her sense of drama reads through the vocal semiotic, not just through bodily gesture. The focus is on Suor Angelica as a character, not the diva portraying a character. That’s how it should be: one rarely sees that this days in all the sea of egos singing on the great operatic stages. Not to mention that her technique is sheer perfection. So beautiful!

I got something in my eye, seriously. I love the singers who act the scenes so devotedly, and not just sing them with technical mastery. This is a truly remarkable performance.

so interesting. I tend to agree with Manon Vernon above. Her vibrato sounds erratic, unnatural and irregular to my admittedly Italian-preferring ears . The pronunciation, to me, sounds very muddy as well.
National and cultural preferences are a real thing-probably what makes the world go round. The exaggerated mime-like acting is also not my thing But, hey, are my preferences hurting her career or your enjoyment? Let's continue to enjoy this great art form

Opera nowadays is a true scandal. All is solved with microphones. And the worst part is that the majority of the audience doesn't have a clue of what they are getting... or they are so pop orientated that they just don't even care.

Personally, I prefer her to Renata Scotto's performance. I find that the new generation of singers is a better actor and musician than a lot of the old ones.

    • @justanotherbohemian3827
      @justanotherbohemian3827 5 лет назад +7

I'll have to disagree, especially when it comes to tenors. When I hear old tenors like Björling, Del Monaco, Bergonzi, Pavarotti, I get the c h i l l s. When I'm listening to Björling's "Je Crois Entendre Encore" for example I think I'm really listening to Nadir singing of his love before he falls asleep. This doesn't happen to me with Kauffman, who is a modern tenor.
And as far as Renata Scotto goes, her voice has such power that she doesn't need to act as much as you would perhaps want to see to move you. The emotion is all in her voice. This lady was astonishing in her own way, but Renata has a special place in my heart.

I don’t understand the phenomenon of Ermonela. In the times where acting is guided to a more natural, life/movie -wise, Ermonela is praised for her acting skills too. Not saying that acting in opera is very natural in general. Though, I’m confused as Erminela reminds me Mexican telenovelas or Turkish tv soaps. I watched her life, even from far away for me it was so unrealistic and over the top, so I couldn’t believe the word she sang. Not mentioning her poor sound quality which time to time couldn’t cross full orchestra. Completely overrated singer. Royal Opera should bring just the best singers in the house. It should be their duty to educate the listener with highest class of opera singing. I’m sad…
