At around 2:00 the wooden knob on the bed post came off and she very nicely incorporated that moment of instability into her acting. By the end not only does she convey a woman gravely ill, but also someone in utter despair. Absolutely heartbreaking to watch.
A singular interpretation of Violetta by Ermonela Jaho. Terrifyingly Beautiful. The definition of the sublime! She was not acting. She was Violetta.! Bravisssima, Diva! -- Anne F and Ferhat Y.
Yes! I had no idea What was awaiting us in a small cinema, EL Prado in Sitges, Spain. Everyone was rivetted to their seats, yet fumbling around for handkerchiefs. This last Act was breathtaking and speechtaking! Nobody found words to express what we had all witnessed! MY GOD, Ermonela was not acting! ... SHE was Violetta, being so integrated in her role! It was dumbfounding! How could she do that?
@@grahambruce4708 Yes, indeed! I have since been researching the life and utter tragedy of the life of Marie Duplessis, who died this very day, 3rd February 2019, 172 years ago, in 1847. RIP. In my researching, over and over again I was reminded of the modern tragedy of Diana, Princess of Wales. ~ Particularly poignant was the sale of her beautiful clothes for charity at her beloved sons' suggestion. ~ Not to settle debts, as in the case of the hapless Lady of the Camellias. Everyone who is fascinated by this tragedy can see on RUclips the stunning interpretation of John Neumeir's "Purple Pas de Deux" by dancers Gudrun Bojesen and Ulrika Birkkjaer from his magnificent ballet. Simply search on RUclips: Lady of the Camellias - Purple pas de deux. I also recommend the exquisite Bolshoi performance of the entire ballet in three separate acts: The Lady of the Camellias - Bolshoi - Act I. ... II ... and III (downloaded by kindness of joya 5 March 2017)
I hope this performance will come out in DVD. It was really unforgottable. Ermonela herself was on her knees at the end, when courtains fell, completely overwhelmed by the emotions she brought on stage, both with her singing and acting. I felt the same, completely overwhelmed.
I have watched the broadcast at the cinema and I can tell you it was breathtaking. She is the most persuasive and honest Violetta that I have seen so far. She made me cry for about five times during the performance. The rest of the crew was great as well (Castranovo, Domingo), but she was the true star of the opera. Let“s be clear, she is definitely not the best soprano who ever sang this role, but she is definitely the best actress I have seen playing it so far. she really throws her heart and soul in singing and she will drag you into her beautiful world of emotions. Absolutely astonishing
I actually met her one month ago, behind the stage. She was so sweet and nice towards me. I told her how fabulous I thought she was ( it was Magda from Rondine ) and she touched my cheek and said „ thank you „ I was SO starstruck.
The only problem with this is that it's so close to perfection that it's hard to imagine seeing it again without comparing it to this, and finding it wanting. I've been lucky to see many of the world's very finest singers in this production over the last 25 years - Gheorghiu, Netrebko and Fleming for starters - and none of them managed this degree of intensity and realism in Addio del Passato. I even heard someone on the way out say that: "it was amazing that she could sing like this when she was so ill!"
Highly agree. I went to see this production yesterday with Dinera Alieva. Unfortunately Dinera was "terrible" as Violetta. She pales compared to Ermonela
I don’t understand why people keep mentioning realism. She is CONSTANTLY moving as she does in all her work. How is this realistic for someone dying of consumption? She should be almost motionless. Of course there’s the suspension of disbelief with regards to the singing, but we have to do it with it the acting too? Her vocal delivery is also frenetic and explosive, bespeaking of huge reserves of energy, not exhaustion. I just don’t get how that adds up to realism.
@@greatmomentsofopera7170 I concur. In a separate comment, I wrote that if she continues pushing her small voice like this she will soon find herself singing Addio in the shower.
Last year, before the Sydney Opera House became a ghost town, I went to Opera Australia’s ‘Anna Bolena’ on a whim & came out emotionally & spiritually destroyed & reborn, raving about this ravishing Albanian soprano who’d just immolated herself for us on stage 💓🙏🏻
I love how she used her coughing and gasping to signify that she was terminally ill with TB I watch this video over and over in awe of her performance as well as acting skills she is a beautiful singer another beautiful character of hers and one that she introduced me to is sister Angelica and I say she is amazing in that one too so brava
Apart from her extraordinary acting - and more than acting true feeling to give a vocal expressiveness like we seldom hear today -, this is also so well sung! Her use of vocal dynamics and her pianissimi are magnificent.
No other soprano evoked in me a remembmrance to Maria Callas until Ermonela Jaho appeared. Whole her perfomance is deeply felt, lived, not fegined. Her voice can not be easily described as "beautiful", it even has some minimal errors from time to time but always overmastered by a deep rendering of the character she portrays. What an artist! Bravo, bravo, bravo!
Most singers nowadays are more committed to playing their roles than Netrebko, and I've seen her live last year. Wish I could watch Ermonela in action soon, she's very convincing.
@alejandrotm have only seen Netrebko on live in HD. She has beautiful high pianissimi and the perfect groved tongue. But she seems like she just doesnt really car. Perfunctory.
Ermonela Jaho is an Albanian operatic soprano. She has been described in The Economist as "the world’s most acclaimed soprano". The Financial Times has said "Ermonela Jaho throws heart and soul into her singing... Don't even try to resist".
With all my respect to Ermonela Jaho, because it's obvious she is a real good soprano, but maybe The Economist never ever heard of Maria Callas or Magda Olivero or Leyla Gencer. They were and they actually are (even if they are dead) the world's most acclaimed soprano. Moreover, they are the best Violetta ever seen...even if Ermonela is a great Violetta!
@@desperatehell , I can not judge if she is today, the most... but the journal is not doing a comparative study of all eras; is for the actuality, and the living peoples
@@desperatehell i am sure they ate talking about actual sopranos that are alive, not the best of all times! But she is up there with the very best ever as well! Maria Callas is the queen of Opera of course!
Such a magnificent performance. Everything from her singing, acting and facial expressions was breath taking. I was tearing up especially towards the end. It really makes you think that pleasure and fun doesn't really help when on the verge of death but true relationships (like family) and faith are really what's important 😢
Amazing, she has sung Traviata over 300 times during her career. Guinness Book of Records material? Needless to say, the quality far exceeds the quantity in this case.
