Truck Stuck on the Hill

- This tractor trailer spun out the night before; he was trying to get up this fairly steep hill in the snowstorm. The heavy, wet snow came down fast and was very slippery to drive on.The truck had to be left on the hill for the night until the storm eased and the road could be cleared for the wrecker. Luckily there was almost no traffic on this road during night of the storm.

Snow plow drivers are worth their weight in gold!!!! Thank you all for your dedication & hard work. Drivers don't get a chance to tell you all how greatful we are for you, but when we see you we are thinking it or saying it to ourselves. Bless you all
Ty
Thanks jasara! It's nice to hear we are appreciated!
Gotta say You are good at Your job. God bless You & all other plow drivers out there helping to keep people safe.
My dad drove Indy to Buffalo Ny, in the 50's and 60's. I went with him a couple of times and this video sure brought back memories. Just in the Buffalo area alone you could go from a few inches of snow to blizzard conditions and then back to hardly no snow at all in a matter of minutes. Thanks, cool video.
Beautiful snow-covered trees, great views, lovely farmhouse. Thank you and good job!👍
Thank you Nancy!
When I was younger I drove a plow. *BEST JOB I EVER HAD.*
Yea the plow truck driver wanted to help get the guy out. he did a great job clearing around the stuck truck so when the wrecker got there 123. I used to haul steel coils out of WI to the East Coast. We always came back Mt trailer, no freight, so we could get our next load, & no we were not paid for mt miles Sometimes IN, MI, OH, & PA were real bad in snow squalls during the winter. I had a shovel tied to the back of my truck as I learned right away, it don't take much to get stuck with an mt trailer. Over the 11 years I ran with those guys, I was always able to shovel myself out. I've even stopped to help others along the way. It didn't really look like this guy was too bad, but hard to tell the grade of the hill he's on. I don't know if a shovel would have helped out or not. The plow driver did a great job of clearing around the truck. I've seen other plow drivers purposely plow stuck trucks in deeper so it's harder to get out. I think this guy just needed a little tug to get going again.
It was storming quite hard when he spun out the night before. That hill is a lot steeper than it looks and it would be almost impossible to get enough traction to pull him out without a winch. I hit the blast button and dropped a shit load of salt on the road all around him to make it easier for the wrecker to get him mobile.
Thanks for the great vid & explanations, keep up the good work &stay safe .
that truck sounds great!
man you plow drivers are the best!
They're my best friend in the winter.
Most satisfying video ever !
Nice job Jim!
good work driver much respects to snow plow driver's
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing.
I'm in the Rockies 3 days a week got automatic chains sanders and 4 chains in the cab. I don't understand how local guys that drive up there got none of these even after getting stuck multiple times over. Not having to stop and chain up saved me so much time investing in automatic chains or sanders is worth it
I know were the start of this video is have to make sure and get a Timmys in Stellarton , but not sure as to were the truck was stuck great job again there Jim .
You get snow like we do here in Northern Maine. Nice vid. Thanks! Drive safe.
Thanks for watching neighbor! Have a safe winter on the roads!
Zero_Code_Name_Reaper Ayuh, seems legit! :) We do know how to keep the roads fairly cleared. Some days it's harder for the crew's, but they do what they can. I haven't been out to Idaho yet, some day! Stay warm!
great video. I noticed you left alot of snow near the truck is that to avoid a possible collision? Are you allowed to render assistance?
Keep the videos coming.
I can't speak for Jim and the policies of the Nova Scotia Public Works Department. But here in Washington State, our WSDOT plows typically don't get much closer to stranded or wrecked vehicles. We just try to clear an area around the disabled vehicle, but we can't risk damaging that vehicle, or the plow truck. Like Jim, we love our work, and we'd all rather we were doing that work all night, as opposed to waiting for a trooper and a road supervisor to come take our accident report.
Yes Sir snow plows are life savers for sure. Myself and old Gambler and his x went over that mountain one night and they said the wind had blown the gate open and we was west bound and about eight or so miles from the top was a snow plow in the ditch and we stopped and gave him a ride to the top to the station and that's as far as they would let us go and fed us steaks and baked potatoes and corn on the cob and salad man was it good . I was in my freight liner single axle straight truck and Gambler was in his 379 long nose . Chains on both trucks. Nice people. They made us stay and eat breakfast with them and I almost asked if they would adopt me. This was back in 2001 in late February or early March . SEMPER FIDELIS
Good title, I remember singing that song in church when I was little.
Someday the Heavenly Highway will
Take us to The Shining truck stop on the hill
The diesel's free and parking open
I've driven straight enough I'm hopin'
Nice. Thank's Jim.
Nicely done video.
It is one of the things I miss about home. Snow! Lucky to get 3 feet in a year here.
Yeah, it would be nice to get either a lot of snow or none at all!
I hate heavy wet snow, makes my machine drift a little. But all in all it's a fair ''fight'' :))
I ran out of hours one night in Montana and got stuck in a snow storm empty. I pulled over at the top of the pass on the Idaho state line and went to bed in the view point turn out. When I woke up the snow plows decided it would be funny to plow me in with a 3 foot wall around me. 😂
I was there for a few hours digging out. But I made it. They drove by all morning. Not one stoped to help. But all the sudden then knew how to plow and not push snow around my semi truck.
Funny for them. Wasn’t funny for me.
I can't speak for everybody but I don't think most plow operator I know would never plow snow in around a vehicle intentionally. The plow on my truck and many others is fixed and will only plow to the right hand side. If a vehicle is on the side of a road and we are clearing the lane beside it we have no choice as we can't leave the snow on the road creating a hazard to other motorists. I think I can honestly say that any of the guys I work with would go out of their way to help out a fellow trucker
that sure was very interesting. Thank you.
Thank you for watching Connie!
nice job
they can't touch stuck vehicles because of liability from damage.if something broke u know some people would hold you responsible even though you saved their asses.
+Greg Or Jen You hit the nail right on the head! We aren't even allowed to tow our own equipment out if we get stuck.
Well we certainly pulled our own equipment, the towing vehicle put on a full load of sand . One time after a freezing rain we had our plow truck out sanding the road & at just walking speed it slid side ways , & one side dropped of the 3 ft bank , I shoveled 1/2 the load off onto the road , broadcasting it , then walked to the main highway about 300 yds , hitched a ride back to the shop, we did not have radios . Took our JD 544A drove back the 5 mi back to the stuck truck, spread the sand & proceeded to lift front of the truck up & sideways putting sand under the front wheels , then I was able to tow it back onto the road .
My grader had 4ft high bull blade , 14 ft moleboard , & 14 ft wing ! One time I was out highbanking ( cutting the 4 ft bank down to 18" , at that particular place the snow bank was about 2 ft past the edge of the road so when I got close I broke the the ice and the side of the grader dropped into the swamp .I had been running about 10-12 mph so I was really stuck & tipped to the right about 30 deg . The sand truck would do no good here , I needed more , there was some logger guys 1/4 mi down the road , one good old boy consented to help ! Used his winch , at my direction to lift the front up , wheels turned & tilted , we were both fully chained , I had moved my turret & blade all the way left , he at 45 deg to road . We both gave it the coal , Walla solid road again . Have fun guys !
I was asking my self why he is not helping him. Thanks for your comment, but I don't think its the right way. Here they help stucked trucks/drivers.
Greetings from austria
BS. That truck had Ontario plates, thats why.
good footage :-)
that 6WD is badass
Great working truck!
You drive better backwards than some people do forwards :)
Good thing that trucker gave up when he did... another 100 feet and he'd have been sideways in the ditch.
I used to work for the city myself I am retired now Lotta snow plowing and storms it's all good I sort of miss plowing through
It can be a lot of fun but can also be a little nerve racking at times. Especially when it's raining and freezing and making black ice.
Great video, man you drive that rig like a pro nice job
Thank you Patrick! Be sure to watch for more new snow videos as winter is coming soon.
maybe, just maybe, that is because he is a pro
BEAU NIEKERK Absolutely! I've been been plowing snow with a small one 1 ton GMC 3500HD and 8 foot Straight blade Fisher plow for about 18 years here in Utica NY and love it, but I've always wanted the opportunity to drive one of these mamothes, this kind of snow plowing takes extreme eye coordination and timing, this man has exactly that experience, and does it very well
Must be nice having a day and night shift . I'm in the truck until the storm's over
I must admit it is nice knowing you can go home to rest and not have to work more than 12 hours at a time! You must work for a private company?
You in the 6x6 again this year? A shame you couldnt pull them out even though I could tell you wanted to help.
@@MrCreepen its not only the possible damage liability for the stuck vehicle ... its the possiblity of damaging the snow plow equipment also . my dept for example took a brand new 926 it loader out to pull a stuck truck out , long story short chain broke about took out the radiator, intercooler and the back up camera not to mention the operator( busted the hell out of the grill though. We had another instance where grader was trying to pull a truck out of the mud, chain broke and almost completely penetrated the windshield right in the drivers face... . which puts a strain on the rest of the dept till the equipment is repaired for the rest of the storm. As a mech on municipality equipment I know all about the struggles of repairing and sometimes bandaiding equipment to get back out there and plow snow during a storm.
Unfortunately we aren’t allowed to pull people out here either, I work for the county road department in Southeast Utah, to many folks are sue happy, if I come across a stuck vehicle I do get out and do what I can to help, salting around the vehicle and shoveling salt under the tires for them and helping push by hand, I cannot sit there and watch someone struggling and not try and help, if I can’t get them out I can call the sheriffs dispatch on the radio then they will help, last winter I had to do that, this kid was out on a 2wd four wheeler and thought he could make it through a foot of snow down in a spot where we ride atv and bikes, he was freezing cold so we tried to help push it out while he was trying to ride it out but the snow was to deep and the wheeler was a couple hundred yards out in the snow away from the road, I have no idea how he got that far out there but he wasn’t getting back out
I would have plowed around that truck differently. I use to plow. I ran a 2000 Volvo VE Dump, D12 engine with 8-9 yards of weight in the body, 13-speed.
Where about are you plowing / from Jim - Steve from Moncton
I assume you guys chain up?
Also, is diff /interaxle lock engaged? Thanks
Where are you? I am looking to relocate to a place like this.
Third video I seen from you, loving it :)
Sorry I missed you comment! I am in Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada.
Wow just left the truck driver there no help pushing him out wow
The truck was there all night and the driver was nowhere in sight. Plus, we are not allowed to tow out stuck vehicles, not even our own. Thanks for watching!
Where are you guys located? Looks like a nice little town. Must have some elevation with all those amazing "Christmas trees" around!
We are in Nova Scotia Canada.
Wow, thanks!
In the 80's first hill out of the garage at 2 AM would be an empty bread semi stuck half way..I'd drag him to the top and he'd be on his way
I hear ya. Some of the plows think they're holier than thou
couple of questions:
what state, county and town is this in ? (the area looks really beautiful and wonderful, ill bet even more so during the warmer season)
i assume the driver of the stuck rig stayed in it overnight ?
what is the red flashing "pause" i saw reflected on the windshield of the truck youre driving ?
Nova Scotia, Canada.
Sorry I missed your comment! I must of had the salt computer on pause. I plow for the DOT in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
Stay safe my new friend
Thank you friend!
I neither push snow for a living nor side work, but how in any way was the semi-trailer assisted or roads cleared of snow in this video?
So, were you plowing as you went? It didn't look like the plow was down. Just wondering. I wanted the video to keep going! 😊 Beautiful country! Thanks again and good work!
Thank you! Yes I did have the plow down. If you liked the scenery in this video then check out ruclips.net/video/niyRAGgQb0s/видео.html
Will do. Thanks!😊
That guy needs to get out clean behind his tires back up than straighten himself up he would be fine. But I'll bet you a dollar that 95 percent of the truckers don't carry a shovel. Take care stay safe out there.
I used to be on road maintenance on county roads in Ontario Can we ran a wing on our plows to clear about 14-16 ft of road ! I was the equipment operator , get the road cleared lots faster
When i worked the rigs in Northern Alberta Canada , at 15 min. in to the film that's how we got there . :) Cheers .. Follow the dam plow truck...
man im so glad we dont have stick shift trucks any more
i can rock my way out when stuck many time with a stick shift. & they do still make them
And that hook and pull the truck on the road was impossible? And calmly clean the road.
Driver could have been shoveling snow or putting on the chains.
why did you help him ?
why they not put safe plastics stiks on dich? here in norway we have a sticks because when snow much and strong wind we don"t see shit and much easy for the snowplow driver clean the way
Many American roads have those...
some times on montains snow over 1meter in about 2hours so if don"t have a that sticks how is possible clean the snow!! no chance
It sure would come in handy having markers sometimes! Some night we have to keep looking out the side windows to see where we are on the road when it's snowing hard.
oh yes not so easy i know
jorge fonseca I would come across Cabage on 84 go and coming in the winter and them markers would have been a blessing. SEMPER FIDELIS
Not criticising anyone's operating at all. So the gear boxes in those trucks must be so heavy that the synchros don't make up for everything? It almost sounded like an old 50 Ford Truck that I learned to drive in when you shifted.
surprised he could not back out
+MrGiovannix12 My partner on the night shift was there when he got stuck and said the more he tried to move the truck the closer he slid towards the ditch.
dig it out....
then use damn chains
Cool video
Yeah, can't toss out a drag chain like the old days!! If I was stuck I'd dig out my little D handle street shovel and start digging (like usual) and ask the kindly plow driver, if it wasn't too much to ask, drop a pile of sand/salt/gravel and be much obliged!
No we can't! We can plow all around you and drop off some sand or salt to put under your wheels but we cannot pull you out! We aren't even allowed to pull our own equipment when we get stuck!
I hear that, but still, a bit of work with a shovel would get that driver back on the road. though he probably doesn't even have a hat.
Why isn't it allowed to pull? Because of possible damage to equipment or something else?
i always carried a shovel & plenty of food in my rig.
i used to hear guys bitch but they still didn't wish to carry supply's with them
No trucker in areas that snow should ever leave the yard or dock without chains in the truck.
Ya gotta love some freight companies, eh? They want these guys to drive in the snow but they won't give them chains or teach them how to use them.
I would tell trainees to chain up at the foot if you're going to try it and to keep 4 things in mind. If you stop, you're fucked. If you're going up in chains, let the truck gears do the work, not your gas pedal. If you have to hit the brake, you've already ignored #2 and you're fucked. Never use the Jakes, downhill in the snow.
I don't see any chains on the semi. Too lazy to throw them on, now he's stranded.
Chains certainly would have helped!
how did it get stuck???
Not too keen on the jake brake.
how nice
what part of the world is that
WTF !!the only human around on that mountain pass. that driver probably thought that he could make it in the middle of the storm
Did you guys not plow till the storm was over wow how did the road get that bad.
It was snowing that hard through the night that you had to drive slow because of low visibility!
We started when the snow was 3/4" ! Onetime we plowed 37 1/2 hrs strait!
You left the person there?? Wow..
i Love This Weather nice Video is this in Canada?
No way that is Canada...US for sure.
Tom LaRocque actually I think it is Canada
Lol, I think we are at an impasse...only the author can help at this point. If I'm right I'll get you a beer and vice-versa.
Actually Nova Scotia, Canada.
philmorrissette lol, I stand corrected. I owe someone somewhere a beer someday. Thanks for the clarification.
tanks for the video
Where is law enforcement like a local cop or deputy because in most cases in Shawano County wis there is a cop there to patrol the area and they would had the tow truck there quick
Man hätte den Trucker der da stand auch helfen könne , hätte man ....
ikr
Oh yeah freezing rain ice snow sometimes I've been up 80 hours one week you know we don't go home until the white stuff stops
We are lucky here as we only work 12 hour shifts and get to go home and rest for the next 12 when the other shift takes over. We might end up doing that everyday for weeks on end if the snow never stops.
Been there done that for 12 plus years got big kick out of it most done 1stretch 54 straight couple little naps thrown in then after it again
Why did you stop and help the guy rather than just plow a shit ton more of snow in front of him making to worse?
The DOT does Stellarton?
No, but I have to drive through town to get to my plow route.
Place looks familiar, seen it before, but cant place it. By the looks of it, hardwood trees, soft rolling hills could be North Ontario not western Canada. could also be out east, Nova Scotia or Brunswick, but the accent is wrong???
Does anyone know where this is?
This is down east in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. About 10 mile south of Stellarton on the 374.
I woulda bet on highway 11 N.Ontario
Hey Jim, where is this?
This was on highway 374 in Pictou County, Nova Scotia CA.
@@JimHowDigsDirt Thanks for the info.
why do you plow with the jake brake on...
+OETIOHeavyLifter Why not? If it is very slippery I will turn it off.
Isn't that just a great spot get spun out.
Kyle
No it's not a great spot to park.
I see that you drive really slow is it a icy mountain
Yes it was quite slippery and the road is a lot steeper than it looks in the video.
Do all plows have mandatory dash cams now?
+Devyn Gillis' Music No. I just wanted one for my own protection. Plus you see a lot of crazy shit while plowing roads.
I drove a plow when I was younger. *BEST JOB I EVER HAD.*
almost looks like a cn truck, that maybe headed towards the tire plant?
+Ajay Henderson I don't think it was a CN truck. It was heading towards Sheet Harbor on the 374 about 12 miles past Stellarton. I never noticed the name on it.
it's a VA truck
wtf!! how long will it take like to clean a 10 km street? and i think this is in countryside so streets are very long and boring!
Where is this?
BBBYpsi At the beginning he's driving through Stellarton, NS, Canada so somewhere a bit south of there would be my guess
where's Jamie Davis??
Why did you put all that snow in front of the truck?
Theodore Barrett Sr. , Sir he did not, he put it all on the shoulder, the truck was not pointed on the road properly . Did you not see where the right side of his plow uncovered gravel !
Was the guy lost? He live in the area?
+Stardust Dream Factory He wasn't from the area. He was passing through trying to get home before the storm and got caught up in it. When it started snowing it came down fast and was very slippery.
+JimHowDigsDirt Yeah, but that looked like a remote back road. GPS malfunction? Location?
i assume you couldnt (due to job limitations) chain up to him and try to pull him out?
+Justin Bechtel not sure how it is where Jim works, but here in WA, we have a specific policy that says we cannot tow any vehicle out of the ditch with a state vehicle. There are probably a few good reasons for this, but the first 2 that come to mind are, the tow truck companies don't like us taking their bread n butter work (can't blame them), and some nights, there are so many people in the ditches, we'd never get caught up on our plowing
+Justin Bechtel We aren't even allowed pulling out our own trucks.
+JimHowDigsDirt It's foolish, like that where I live too, buddy of mine was right hung up one night, at like 4am, and just called the local policeforce to see if they had a chain laying around we could borrow, they said they'd call the city clean up crew (they sent a plow like the one in this video over) and guy looks at us and he's like, "I can't hook up to you or tow you, best I can do is help push" He had a chain on his plow, couldn't even lend us the chain, like, wtf, the shit did they send him for then XD
+Andrew Stubblefield yeah plus if damage is done to the person u are getting out or the truck, you can get sued
wow not making your job any easier being in that location.
On the flat... he slid out?
Looks flat on the video but it's a fairly steep hill.
already for tomorrow?
+Ajay Henderson Yes sir. I love plowing the bigger storms best of all.
hellow draver"
from the dash cam the hill doesn't look very steep
Yeah the camera doesn't do it justice!
あのトレーラーは助けないのですか?
If the truck's headlight were on all night, wouldn't that drain down the batteries?
They left the truck idling all night. Not sure if the driver was in the bunk, never seen any sign of him.
The truck was running !
Take my opportunity to clear another lane...
I heard a jake shift in there starting out.
Yep! I find it handy for shifting when plowing snow. Takes the revs down faster so you can get it into the next gear before the snow slows you down too much.
JimHowDigsDirt yep I plowed for the state for about 5 yrs. Definitely know what u mean. a lot of the same driving mannerisms. a lot of your vid,was a trip down memory lane. thx 4 video. stay safe.
My term 71-74 . The ODH ran diesel . On the township we had 69 Ford 5 sped /dp, 5 yd box , single axle Detroit locker , 478 cu in , 4 barrel , 2 -4 mpg . Also old 59 Int 4/4 , we canceled it & for the 73/74 winter we had 73 Int with 479 , 2 bl , 2/4 mpg , the grader Champion/Detroit
GET THAT TRUCK OUT OF THERE ASS HOLD
tire chain was under tire broken chains or driver doesn't know how to chain up
Looks dismally cold.
+Mike McInerney It was chilly!
Snow is white while we are pointing out the obvious.
朝早くからお疲れ様です。
18 wheeler should have had chains on
