That is the best I have ever watched Mike Sigel play pool. The matches from the 80s and 90s are hard to watch when he played them. Takes forever and shaking his head as he goes up and down on the cue. Now a days it doesnt seem as whiny of play. And with a skip ahead button it is OK to watch
These are always great. The one slight criticism, or really more a request I would make is when I hear commentators like this that are articulate and funny, and they are pool players, I would like to know who they are in the little write up at the start. It kind of gives me some insight into more of what the players might be thinking while you watch them play certain situations, and adds another dimension to the observing and educational (pool, that is) experience.

I'm gonna play this discipline soon and i come from snooker background.. The things that sigel do there after he plays a shot would be frowned upon in the snooker tournaments.. But i look forward to playing 14.1 in april
Mike is old and isn't the consistent winning champion he used to be and knows it. He is still capable of hitting that high gear opponents used to fear him for, but the insatiable hunger and desire to compete and win is mostly gone. When you start to play 14.1 you will come to appreciate, and realize what Mike accomplished in this match. Running and breaking out a lot of balls is one thing, but doing it with complete control is another. Cheers!
I thought Mike was an overrated loud mouth when I saw him play Efren at the IPT King of The Hill match... I'm finally convinced that Mike Sigel is or was a strong player after seeing this 100 ball break. His fundamentals and stroke are very unconventional though.. Glad it works out for Mike..
If you judged Mike's playing ability based off of the IPT, or even this video, then you have the wrong picture of Mike Sigel's game. The IPT was what 18 years or so after he retired from professional pool. Mike was a top road player along with being the most winnegest tournament player in pool history. And you don't get those accomplishments by just talking.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Sigel for a lengthy profile in Cigar Aficionado magazine (www.cigaraficionado.com/article/the-poet-of-pool-6093) He posted a "perfect game" in 1993, when Albany's Mike Zuglan broke, and Sigel ran 150 and out. He is the greatest living player, bar none. He is leaps and bounds ahead of any straight pool shooter, which is still the ultimate test of a player's overall pocket billiard mettle. Irving Crane (also from the Rochester, New York area like Mike) once lamented, "The game I played (14.1) is no more." Irving is gone now, but videos like this remind us that the game, now more than 100 years old, is still alive and well. It seems that all people can say about Sigel is to criticize his colorful antics at the table. I don't see anyone assailing his talent, however. Anyone watching this cannot help but learn the way he plays patterns.

I wrote about the match in Baltimore Magazine and Cigar Aficionado. I can't recall when Mizerak was thinner, but I know he was awfully good. Sigel was better. Also better than Caras, Balsis, and Lassiter. But Mosconi is another story, since he was the greatest 14.1 champion that ever drew breath.

yes, you're right. good sportsmanship doesn't make a champion. passion does. it's the same bs i see with Earl comments. i'm convinced anyone who is so troubled with their 'brash' behavior don't have an eye for the game and thus don't see the best players eye to eye. if they were rude people outside of pool, i would detest them, but they're nice people outside of the game. that's just their pool personality, and i often can validate their feelings for what happens. you have to comprehend the game to comprehend why and when they talk.

Mike destroyed himself at the IPT King of The Hill match. His mental game crashed right out of the gate and Mike made it 1000X worse by those running negative comments about himself. Holy shit.
Unlike Efren who was still very active as a world touring pro. Mike wasn't even playing in any tournments nor was he anywhere near the same skill level anymore. Sure he could string multiple racks of anything in practice, but there is a lot to be said about being mentally and Tournament Tough. Even at the elite level if you skipped just a couple of tour stops you would be rusty in the next one you entered. That and Mike just didn't have or display that killer instinct and confidence he was so infamous for. Yeah it was a disaster of a match.
Tremendous run, I just didn't like how Mike talked while Ortmann was mid-stroke on his first shot. Ortmann didn't say a word while Mike shot the whole time. Go back and look. First shot of the match, mid-stroke, Mike mumbles something, and Ortmann misses by a mile. That's because in tournament play, you don't expect your opponent to do that to you. Right?... Mike probably still would have won, but win with more class than that.
At least Mike if out in open talking and will probably repeat anything if you ask him, not like today's youth, instead no words are spoken. Nothing is clear, and your not even sure if someone is making a rude, point, or if it's in your head, either way it's now taken your mind off pool. Oh and it's completely intentional. Very rude, idiotic and immmature. At least Mike has the gull to go out and do what he's gonna do.

14.1 isn't so much about shot making - like in 9ball - as it is in cue ball control, managing clusters of object balls, and playing correct patterns. That takes many years to get your head around.
Yes it is especially when he runs 100 and out on you. Mike always likes to talk and it's mainly to calm his nerves. He was clearly jittery in his match with Ortmann because he knew Ortman could do the same thing to him, and didn't want to fuck up. Even younger guys like Johnny Archer plays slow nowadays. Age will do that to you.

He used to, and still has the ego, but he was always a talker. Look at some of the earlier footage of Mike, and you will know how great he really used to play. Then maybe you might have a little sympathy and appreciation for the guy.
It degrades the game of pool when a player pisses and cries over a roll. He really shows his limited intelligence. You never saw Willie or the greats do that. Crying over bad rolls is not entertainment and most people come to see the game, not the player
@ Accu stats actually did do that match last year 2018. Challenge of legends I believe it was called. Sigel got under Strickland's skin so much Earl literally came back with construction earmuffs.
Efren is great but he can’t teach . I don’t think he can teach period Efren once stated when asked about teaching he said I was given a gift and I just know where to hit cue ball not teaching while I’m still playing no teaching

Why did mike break when Oliver won the lag...my guess was he had choice and had mike break...I'm new to the game and rules...can anyone help please
In straight pool breaking is not a good thing
The only positive type of break is the break shot but first break at the beginning of the match is not one you want to be doing
