In today's video we are replacing the damaged and leaking oil pan on 2014 Audi Q5 2.0T. This oil pan was recently resealed at a local shop and had a leak begin within 500 miles. The shop opened the pan with a screwdriver and damaged the pan, the tried to cover it up with extra RTV, but that didn't prevent the leak. Since they damaged it, the best route is to replace the whole oil pan. This is pretty much the same procedure for any 2.0T (Q5, A4, A6, & Allroad) with the electronic steering rack.
When doing this job, even if you are just resealing it and using the old pan, you MUST use new hardware. DON'T use old hardware, they can strip or break. I also highly recommend the OEM sealant as well. Links below for all hardware and tools needed much cheaper than the dealership if you plan ahead.
Don't forget new oil and filter as well!

My 2013 B8.5 A4 oil pan has been leaking since 2019. I have never been able to find a comprehensive video showing how its done. I went to two different mechanics and received quotes in excess of $1,500. I figured the cost to top off the oil was lower than getting it fixed. Their reasoning was always, "we have to drop the subframe of the vehicle to change the oil pan". THANK YOU so much for this video. I completed this job in an afternoon ( about 4 hours, including watching my daughter), and I had all of the tools and steps necessary because of your video. Definitely wasn't that difficult of a job. One caveat, my electronic steering module came ALL the way down, and MAN that was difficult to get back in place. I zip tied it to the anti-roll bar, but it didn't help much. All that being said, you are the GOAT, and you've got a subscriber for life. THANK YOU again!
These comments are my favorite by far! So stoked that you were able to fix it🤟🏼
should've used a jack to align the steering module!😉
If needed I would. But this slid in pretty easy by hand. Good tip for future use though🤙🏼
@@Mechani_Cole no problem bro, thanks for the video. It helped a lot.
Good video looks very fun to do I got my parts today my oil pan with oil level sensor and gasket sealant with the 19 bolts. Also changing the oil pressure sensor with new one. With your videos it helped me out with replacing 1 and 2 valve cover gaskets. Much appreciated your videos are great.
I have that torx bit without the shell then just put a 10 mm bicycle wrench on it .nice demonstration
Excellent video /Walk through I completed the job successfully and didint have to even disconnect the rack knuckle, you just take the bolt out and wiggle it down a little and use a 30T drill bit , on a small bit ratchet , And some Rtv will do the job within 2-3 hours taking your time .! Don’t rush them bolts are easily stripped had no issues. Thanks man 🎉
Best Audi tech on RUclips
Ay! Appreciate the accolade🫡
Great video. For 25:05 part, you can use a jack. I used that and leveled the electronic steering rack with ease. Also for the stubby torx screws. If you get the 1/4 360 (Swivel head) rachet, there's no need to lift the engine to get to those two bolts.
U used a torx and a vice grip to break the bolt out
Torqueing in a criss-cross pattern is also very effective in the bedroom.
You must be a torque specialist. Teach us your ways😩
You must be a torque specialist. Teach us your ways😩
Hahahahaha yup
I checked with 3 different mechanics and they all quoted me 18-20 hours of labour for this. 😨 What's going on?
Ok, that's a little insane. I could understand 6 to maybe 10 hours max, but 18-20 is to much.
I'm not a "technician" with shop tools and this only took me 4 hours with breaks. If I remember I quoted under $1200 for this
Just to confirm, mine is Audi a6 C7 2014 with faulty oil pan gasket. Man, I love my car but unfortunately I have to sell it if it's actually that big of a repair. 😔
3.0 or 2.0 engine?
@@Mechani_Cole 2.0
Would take me 4 hours. They sound like clowns or they are trying to rip you off. 18 hours is enough for an engine rebuild, that's truly a crazy number
Great video! Wish you were in California. So hard to find a good mechanic and the dealership is a rip-off.
Hard to come by an honest mechanic these days for sure it seems
8:24 always put a towel on the swing arm or a piece of wood to support the hood. Put a hole in my shiny BMW hood once, $650 mistake.
Good idea, thanks
Excellent video. Well done, well edited and very informative. Keep it up.
Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Nice vid. Replacing the oil pan on my A6 today.
Best of luck, hope it goes smoothly!
Hello love the video. I'm going to be tackling this project on my 2010 Audi A5 2.0 Myself. My first question is. Are the bolts on the Oil Level Sensor also torqued to 10 NM? And for the Bolts W/ Square Nuts on the power steering rack @ 25:13 What are the Torque Specs? And if I have to disconnect my steering shaft as u do, what's the Torque Spec on that triple square?
Thanks! Yes on the oil level sensor. For the other stuff, I don't remember the torque specs off top. But since neither is a rotating assembly, just make them tight and it should be fine. I wouldn't worry to much on those specs myself
Buen video 👍🏻 gracias
Very helpfull video. THX
2015 Audi A3 2.0T, Took it to a local mechanic to have it done and they quoted 550 + Tax for new Aluminum Oil Pan, Labor and Oil soo not to terrible I guess from what I'm seeing ...
That's actually a really good price. The car in the video was quoted $1800 from the dealership to fix this
@@Mechani_Cole yeah I avoid the dealership at all cost, if they glance at it that’s about 550 right there 😭
Why do you need to leave it for an hour before the final torque down?
@deejay4837on the back of all RTV tunes the directions say to let it sit for that long before torqueing them. This is to let the rtv firm up a little and not get all squeezed out
@@Mechani_Cole Okay, makes sense. Btw I think your video is the only one for the b8.5 platform with the electrical power steering. Thanks for that.
@deejay4837 that's dope, appreciate the comment🫡
Why did you use RTV and not a factory gasket? Also what is the torque specs for the oil drain plug, I had my oil changed at jiffy lube and they tighten it with a impact gun and stripped out the threads on the oil pan. $700 later I’m going to change my own oil from now on.
There is no factory gasket. This is the procedure recommended by Audi in their own repair service manual
@@Mechani_Cole Thank You
Awesome content. Thanks!
Yeah I have an 07 a4 quattro and my oil pan doesn't look anything like this...
Yeah, you have an older model. This is for 2012 and up
Hey man, excellent video! I'm unfortunately going to have to do this on mine because no way am I paying anybody to do it for me. It's a bit more involving than what I was hoping for it to be but oh well. I've done exhaust headers before. How bad could this be?? 😅
Do you remember what the torque specs are for those two crossmember bolts that hold the electronic steering case? That's the only thing I'm missing.
Really not too hard, just take your time and definitely don't rush it. A little more involved than headers, but it's not that bad. The small torque wrench is very helpful.
I don't remember the torque specs off top. Just snug em tight, it's not a moving assembly so it should be all good
I tried sealing my oil pan 3 times on my 2011 a4 I ended up getting a new pan cause the old one was bent but it’s still not sealing if I put too thick of a bead of rtv would that keep it from sealing
It doesn't matter how much rtv you use. If it's bent, it's not going to seal ever. You have to get a new one
Are you torqueing the bolts to the correct spec? Are you waiting 90 mins for the sealant to cure before bolting down like the instructions on the bottle say?
Huge help! Thank you!
And one of the screws at the front that holds in the oil pan is snapped and stuck on the inside of the thread. I'm thinking easy out tool but need to use a puncher and then drill a hole so the easy out tool can do it's job but in not sure. I'm fixing this Audi out on the street too so it's quite difficult It's an Audi A6 2.8 v6 2011.
Ouch, those suck! Is there any of it sticking out? Or is it all in the threads?
@@Mechani_Cole Yep it sucks. And none of it is sticking out it's all in there it seemed like it was glued on. That car dealer does not take care of his customers at all doesn't service them just sells and its people like Xposure motors that give the car sale industry a bad name.
Best of luck getting it out, luckily once a tap is in there they come out pretty easy🤞🏻
@@Mechani_Cole Yea hopefully and hope it doesn't rain for the long weekend. Everything is gonna work out.
Loved your video thank you!
What more do you have to do to get the upper oil pan off?
Once it's in service position not much. Remove the cam sensor first then start removing the cover.
What oil dipstick would you recommend for the q5? Would you get the part number from the a4/a6 and use that?
Which manual dipstick did you use? Noticed that as I am preparing myself for the same job. Just replaced all suspension components as the oil thrashed the bushings. After cleaning all the oil off noticed it's from the pan. Fml.
Pretty sure it's this dipstick - amzn.to/3GUQSc3
Do you have to raise the engine to get a spanner with the torque bit for the screws at the back?
Yes, the engine gets lifted a bit for more access
says "rookies" after he breaks the oil sensor XD
Rookies are everywhere 😅
New pan bolts ? Go to Audi?
You can order them online for a little cheaper if you have a few days to wait
Were did you get the engine lifting tool? It looks as if this is absolutely necessary fo rthe job. What did it cost? Thx!
Harbor freight sells them for cheap. Called an engine support bar. Can also find them online, it's very helpful and not very expensive
what size is that torx head to remove the oil pan bolts?? i need to replace a leaking oil pan on my wife's 2016 A3 2.0T
Torx t25 if I remember correctly. But best to have a whole set of them. They are cheap, and you will need all of them eventually
@@Mechani_Cole I tried a T35 from an old set and it broke, so I'm headed to pick up a new set. thanks for your quick reply!
I wonder how much is the labor for both the lower timing cover and the oil pan? and how long time are they gonna take?
I've heard some quotes around 14-20 hours plus parts depending on what you need. I would expect to pay $3000-5000
@@Mechani_Coleholy shit for just the cover and the oil pan gasket? it’s not that hard to put it in the front service position for the lower cover.
Still have to lower the steering rack and support the engine. It does take some time
Is the 2012 audi a7 same procedure? It definitely looks around the same to me on the a7 I'm working on just the bolts are different on oil pan.
Is it a 2.0 or 3.0?
@@Mechani_Cole 2.0
I did the job pretty much same process only problem ran into was one bolt on oil pan I couldn't get to bc oil cooler lip was in way. So I just bent it fto get to get and bent it back . Video is on my channel psychobenz84
@@Mechani_Cole psychobenz
Trying this on a MK6 golf TDI, there's a pipe in the way and its sketchy putting it back on.
The coolant pipe that runs across the front? Or something different?
@@Mechani_Cole Yeah I think it's an airline? 2 or 3 inch pipe I disconnected it no coolant came out. It's in the way in the back right if you are looking at it from underneath. One shop wanted over a grand just to put it back together, the cheapest I found is $500 and can't get my car in until halloween. It's would take them 30 minutes or less to finish.
Got her just had to raise the car up a bit and duct tape the pipe out of the way
Well I added four and a half quarts of oil and now the car wont start its just clicking you have any ideas?
@living4adrenaline did you disconnect any sensors? How about the starter wires? Lastly, double check your voltage on your battery. If you preformed this work with the battery still hooked up, the battery could very well be too low
it is necessary to loose the engine mounts just to lift the engine a little?
No, you can lift the engine a little bit without loosening them.
@@Mechani_Cole thank you so much
What size triple square is needed for the two x bar bolts?
If I remember correctly it's a M12 triple square. The set listed in the description should have every size needed for cheap too
Where you located man ?
Las Vegas @tayvohnglover7101
What a pain in the ass job. What if you unbolted the motor mounts and jacked the engine up by the transmission to get more clearance for those rear bolts on the pan?
The engine is raised a little to get to them. You could unbolt the mounts and get more room, but can only go up so high. Stubby still helps in this case
where r u located? my q5 2012 needs help lmk tia
Las Vegas
You wanna do an inspection on my 2012 Q5 2.0?
Would love to if in the same area. I'm in the Everett WA area for now.
What cam do you use to film?
This was shot on the Galaxy S20 Ultra + and a few scenes on the GorPro 9. I usually film on both😁
why not install oil pan gasket?
There isn't an oil pan gasket anyone makes for this. RTV is what the manufacturer calls for
@@Mechani_Cole I found on rockauto 3 different gaskets for this oil pan. APEX AOP909, FEL-PRO OS30821 and MAHLE OS32421. This is for Q5 2011 but it fits most Audi and WW cars from 2006 -2016. If i use the gasket should i still put a little bit of rtv silicone?
@NetWibe not sure. Never used one, have only used RTV myself
I ordered a 2010 Audi q5 oil pan from rockauto it came with rtv silicone . But not sure if I need a oil pan gasket, but I bought one just in case . Do you know if I will need the oil pan gasket ? Or I’m good with just rtv Silicone?
@niurcalopez634 just RTV if I remember right
What size triple square bolts?
@diabl0_107 best to have a full set if working on these cars. Here is an affordable set - amzn.to/3V9FiR6
на кого датчик списал, колхозавр?
Wtf!!! It would be cheaper to take it to the shop and pay a mechanic. Tools alone would cost a few grand.
Not even close to a thousand. Only took 4 hours
BTW, the only thing you need that's "expensive" is the engine hoist. It's under $100 at harbor freight. At max, this job will take about $300 in tools of you have absolutely no tools at all. Most DIY folks have a decent amount of these tools minus the engine holder, which again, is pretty affordable. This person got quoted around $2000 for this repair. I did for under $500
This man is never following any torque values as if they didn't exist 😂
@pssa3215 are you high? I torque every bolt down with a torque wrench.... 22:14
@@Mechani_Cole thanks for letting us know which values you chose 🤡
He did, you can hear the click, it’s just he didn’t tell us the values as he was tightening them. He told us the value of the oil pan bolts “10 nm” but nothing else.
@@robertwagner386 thats what i meants captain. He never tells anything.
@pssa3215 You're smoked. I literally put the torque specs in the video. I make entire videos helping people for FREE and people like you still find a way to complain....
