My partner uses old style fountain pens a lot to draw with and constantly uses either his jeans or pieces of tissue to wipe his nib, so, it's his birthday coming up in May and i think im definitely going to make him one of these! What a perfect little gift for somebody who appreciates calligraphy ink drawing!
Ah. The black yarn is now making sense since the ink of refillable old-fashioned ink pens (quills too) was black. Pretty.
I work at a park where we teach children about pioneer life. They get to use a quill pen or a pen that is used for calligraphy. This pen wiper will be perfect to add to our cabins! Thank you so much!
That's a great idea!
I could see red and yellow pen wipers on the desks. That would be so cute. If there's an apple pattern, that would be even better! Of course, modern kids don't know about the tradition of giving an apple to the teacher. It got lost somewhere around the late 1950's or early 1960's, I think.
@@loisruthstrom8143 I mean growing up in the 90s I knew about the tradition but none of us DID it.
Absolutely adorable. Love this piece of history.
To fun!!!!! I'm an artist,I paint a lot of water color and we use a lot of paper towels to WIPE our brushes on. I will definitely be making a couple of those BRUSH wipers for my painting kits!
Thank you for sharing!
It really is fun waiting for the surprise at the end!!!
That beautiful pen wiper can be easily turned into a pin cushion or needle holder.❤
What a great little pattern. Isn’t it amazing that even the most simplest thing of everyday life they made to be something beautiful? We need to do that in our lives more today.
So true!
I truly love your videos♥ I have crochet since I was 8 , am 78 now, my Grandma taught me. I learned to crochet by watching her. Never learned to read patterns. I am a Copy Cat...if I see it I can do it so that is why You Tube is my go to place. Love the vintage items. Would love some Vintage Baby Bibs if you ever run across them. Look forward to your videos. ♥
Agree bibs if you can find any older patterns 😊
Do you mean the parts on a dress or actual bibs? Im not sure they had bibs in those days apart from the decoratuve things on dresses... they did have a little overall thing they put on baby like a painters apron ..my granny and great granny never threw a damn thing out so we have some of them ..or had i think we gave them away... but they did have little pique things around the ruffles at the top. But were cotton so you could boil them and had full arms so you put it on over the clothing to feed them. Pretty much like a painters bib or childs apron.
Best one yet. Looks perfect for a prize ribbon rosette.
Mystery crochet patterns is my favourite series, I was so pleased to see another pop up. Thanks to you and your son.
Never heard of a pen wiper! This is so fun and you're so brave to try these patterns with their often-odd terminology, and without knowing what the patterns are. I imagine ink and paper weren't cheap, especially for us "lowly women-folk," so they had to assume the ladies knew certain things about crochet without writing out all the instructions out.
Very cute! Never heard of pen-wipers! Life was harder then than it is now. I love that rather than just using a piece of rag to wipe off excess ink, people were trying to make an everyday utilitarian items as pretty as possible. Thank you for another high quality tutorial in your fun game!
Without details, your dedication to Genevieve (?) was touching.
Thank yo so much , Rosemary :)
I agree, it's like how we have grocery bag savers and so on :)
@@justvintagecrochet I remember my grandmother crocheted a bottle cozy to keep my baby sister's bottle warm (1960...glass bottles). About 15 years later, somebody invented those thick foam holders to put your can of soda in to keep it cool. Hmmm! 🤔
Oh, so that's why it called for black. Such a cool little piece. Lots of calligraphers would love a pen-wiper.
I guess that is what commercially sold blotters were for. I'm nearly 70 and I remember seeing blotters on office desks back in the 70's and even into the early 80's.
That is a cool pattern. I'm glad that it explained the calico on the back, I couldn't imagine rubbing ink on the top.
As you worked on the pink center part, I saw the pattern for a great scrubby!
I think this pin wiper would be nice made into a Moffitt, added to a sweater, or shawl.. very cute design.
Great idea!
I'm a calligrapher and I didn't know there was such a thing! Thanks very much for sharing this! I made one for myself. I haven't added the cloth, but I don't think there is really any sewing involved. I think you just sandwich five or so layers of black cloth between the crocheted top and bottom disks and I'm just going to tie it together so that the cloths can be replaced when needed.
It's a lot of fun and entertainment to watch you unravel these beautiful old patterns. Love it. ❤
Very nice and I guess very useful for the times. I can just imagine a mother teaching her daughter how to make one and her having her mom's little beauty on her desk at school.
I just love how you solve the pattern instructions whilst talking everything out for us. Stunning and very clever. I’m so impressed and thrilled with the information about the pen writer. Wow. So interesting
Thank you so much!
Crazy kids these days. Don’t even know what your garden variety, everyday pen wiper is!
Great video! Very entertaining!
That's interesting, think it would work as a pot scrubby with a little size adjustment, and change of materials. Or change materials and size for a pot holder.
That chrysanthemum pen-wiper would make a very nice coaster or mug rug! Nice and padded to protect your table.
I was thinking it might be a pretty doily to set under a glass votive candle holder after the first round of pink. This pattern looks like it could be easily used for a lot of different things.
I followed along using acrylic and nylon/wool blend (some vintage yarn I got at the thrift store), and the resulting piece is going to become a brooch. I fully intend to make one with the "appropriate" colors sometime, as I use a couple of dip pens for art and this will come in handy!
Wonderful!
Love it, I think the center in brown and the outer in yellow can form a sunflower pattern that would be pretty too. ❤❤👏👏👏
Awesome little item. That was a good mystery. Great history lesson. Wonderful tutorial
Thank you 🤗
Victorian Era crochet penwiper = modern day screen wiper. Nice👍🏻
It is so remarkable to see something from the Victorian era brought back to life. I couldn't help it, I Googled pen wipers. I knew that they used some kind of powder and/or a blotter to dry the ink on the pages they wrote, but I never knew about the pen wipe. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of Victorian history with us.
I am really enjoying this series! I love a good mystery! Thank you for sharing!❤
I'm so glad!
Made on a much larger scale, with many additional rounds, this would make a lovely bath mat.
Cute... could make them just as rosette to decorate basket, bag, book cover case etc. what a neat way to spruce up a school desk back in the day. Personalize their writing equipment.
Great idea!!
I can't crochet, well I can but badly. It seems the harder I try the worse I get. Your videos mesmerise me, your work, they way you talk, and the discussion you have with yourself everything is just so relaxing. You make it look so easy that I start to believe I can do it but I can't. Fabulous work, I love all your mystery work but to me it's akin to translating hieroglyphics. I wouldn't know where to start so I'll keep watching you and crochet vicariously.
I've looked at many, many old needlework patterns in lady's magazines (and tried a few) and am so impressed at how pretty they are in reality. Pen wipers were a popular item for mothers, sisters and sweethearts to make for gifts and sell at bazaars.
I'm amazed that anyone could have made sense of those instructions. The end result was beautiful. The rosette would be pretty on a baby bonnet. I love these videos.
Thank you so much! and I agree about the rosette! :)
I thought it was a hat brim rosette. Got a great history lesson instead
2 of those in cotton connected front to back would make a great kitchen sponge.
I don't know why I hadn't seen this one yet but I'm kinda happy about it because I was surprised with an extra video to hold me off till the next one. YEAH.
Right on 😁😁
How cool is that. I'm going to make one to go on the table with my Huret doll. She sits at a table writing her Christmas cards Circa 1865
Love it, and the history lesson too. Thank you 🙂
It looks like it was make the cutest version of a dish scrubby. :)
These mystery crocethings are awesome! I also do these on my own and have noticed that ob old patterns tjey expect you to crochet only on back loops. So here you'd have the front loops to do the rosette part. But either way this turned out beautifully❤
Thank you , I learned that ( about the back loops) just recently actually :)
Luv it. I used regular fountain pens in my life but never used nor knew what a pen wiper was. Thanks
As a fountain pen collector, I use a paper towel. But this is something I may consider making anyway. Also, I am so sorry for your loss.
What a cute idea! Would make a cute appliqué on something. Such a pretty idea but looks more like a peony than a rose to me.
Great idea!!
You learn something new every day. I never thought about needing something to wipe the ink off of your quill. Nice pattern to try.
What fun. I'm really enjoying this series.
I know we're not using inkwells much now days, but perhaps making this an inch or so bigger would make for for a very cute pot holder.
What a wonderful idea and pattern!
Great accent piece on an antique desk next to the inkwell!
That is lovely. You made little of history come back to life. x
The calico is supposed to be sandwiched between the front and back rounds of crochet. After you were finished writing with a pen you used the black fabric to clean the point.
Love this one - very fun. I am fond of fountain pens but always had to keep paper towels around for wiping - this would be so much better!
Wow, I had never heard of one of those! I wonder if my grandmother had one when she was a child in grade school.
Thank you for sharing. I like watching because it reminds me of my favorite grandmother working on her crochet. I finally figured it out after so many years.
The calico would be gently basted to the second disk of black yarn. Crochet the two black crochet disks back-to-back, so the calico is on the bottom. Wipe away ink using the calico fabric. Once too soiled, undo the basting, then attach a new fabric calico disk. One can use one more row of green petals / leaves to join the two black crochet disks. Easy to unravel for replacing bottom black crochet disk as needed. You did a wonderful piece of work.
WOW... I love it. I have never heard of a pen wiper. Now I know. Such a pretty thing though, that I would think, get ruined by ink.
It looks like a flower 🌸
That's amazing. I thought it was going to be a flower when you got to the pink part. I too learned something historical about the pen wiper. Now these days we write with a stylus on phones and tablets that don't require ink. I would guess this could still be a useful item for anyone who may write artisticalky with fountain and calligraphy pens.
Cool! Learned about pen wipers. Had never heard of one
I can see this in a lady's purse, used as a blotter for perspiration or excess oil. Perhaps with a soft cotton backing. Rather posh. 😉💜
Hello 👋.I love it. Thanks for sharing this with us.and I leaned something new.
I never heard of an ink wiper! That was a good one! I love the surprise element of your videos.
Thank you so much!
I would love to work up the knit ones if you want to explore those. It would be such fun! I am enjoying crocheting along with the patterns with you.
I’m hooked on these mystery crochet videos.
That was fun! I was intrigued by the way that first the spiral of petals and then the rows of leaves were worked from the outside toward the center.
So pretty! I never knew tthere was such a thing as a pen wiper.
This is a very pretty pattern! I have fountain & calligraphy "dip pens" (I prefer to use ink wells because I don't care for refillable pens that take plastic cartridges. I have a specific favorite ink I use that doesn't fade & is water resistant. This pattern is something I can definitely use! I never thought of crocheting something to take the place of my paper blotter (even though I made cotton cloths to replace paper towels & some other paper products.) 😂 I need to make one of these & even have some black cotton, variegated pink cotton yarn & sage green cotton yarn. 😍
I think the black glazed calico is polished cotton which has a polished or glazed finish like chintz. This was used quite a lot for lining clothing, so there would be a good amount of it in many homes. Good job deciphering the pattern, and it's very pretty.
In modern times, this pattern could be paired with scrubby yarn to make pot scrubbers. Just a thought.😏😏😏
Pen Wiper -
Used to clean ink from the nib of a pen, or quills, or fountain pens with metal nibs. Pen wipers helped keep pen tips clean and free from clogs created by a buildup of dried ink, thereby ensuring smooth, error-free writing.
I love watching your videos on Vintage Crochet! Love seeing how your blind crochet pattern turns out. Very cool to watch & learn the patterns of that era come to life! Thank you for your videos. 👍
❤ wow, that was very interesting. I love the idea of a pen wiper.
You made a pen wiper about a year ago! You done a great job on the first one and on this one too! Sorry I’m so late on watching this one. I love all of your videos.
Ahhh it's so pretty! I would feel bad to wipe yucky ink on it haha
this was really pretty and taught me something new i always wondered how they wiped the nibs clean and now i know
I think it's so sweet and very pretty.
Thank you! 😊
soo cute. And learnt something new. I googled and just love the little animals with bristles for the pen wiper.
Omg. Love it !! So going to do scubbies with this pattern !
That is beautiful. I would make a brooch out it!
Glazed calico would be like glazed cotton, which used to be really common 20-30 years ago but has apparently gone out of style.
So cute and useful back in the day and now for artist !!! Thanks
Yes, I am excited. 2 minutes in... discribtion: hu, did understand nothing, lets see what comes out...nice, your guess is right...why not make something useful pretty. Nice! Thank you so much. This is fun. Love it
Pretty I would use it as a pin / brooch , very cute !
Great idea!!
I would use it as a dish scrubber, so beautiful ❤
Great idea!
Learn something new everyday 😊
I used a pennwiper at school when I was young.
I Love your Videos I Love the mystery and the excitement waiting to find out what it is just so much fun hope you have several more it really is fascinating 😊
Oh, how lovely... and practical! When I'm able to crochet again, I'd like to make one for myself. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's used a pen and while writing, ink or lint accumulates on the tip of the pen: obviously, I very much need my own pen-wiper! Thank you for another wonderful video, Corinna. Well done!! xx
thank you! :)
that's why it's black to start, it won't show the ink! You would wipe the pen on the black back. What a lovely item!
Wow, how interesting. I love the mystery. Another great vid. Thank you.
I love this series! Such a neat way of learning about both crochet and history.
Love, love, love, this series!
I thought I made up the term pen wiper! Lol I'm really into fountain pens. I have a half dozen or so that were manufactured in the 21st century. There are hundreds of varieties for sale currently at stationary stores - even in Office depot. At any rate, I've wished for something to wipe my pens on.
Beautiful patterns each time. 👏💕❤️🙏🏻
I love your videos! Especially the mystery crochet!!❤
Very pretty
Love it!!! Thanks for sharing!
This is so interesting!
Really enjoyed another Vintage Crochet Mystery! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thats it exactly what a beautiful piece!
These are so fun to watch!!
Beautiful! Can't wait to try it
I learned the term pen wiper today too! Thank you.
So much fun!! Loved learning about pen wipers. And that one is so pretty
