My dad owned video stores, so as a kid, I was allowed to watch anything but porn. My dad gave me the distributors copy of every horror, and sci-fi move from the late 70's to the mid-90s. This was one of the 3 I refuse to get rid of. The fact that it's on vhs doesn't matter. It's pure gold in my eyes.
B. Lonewolf Julian Sands was terrific. Richard E Grant was also perfect...the film was/ is perfect. Some scenes I still find disturbing. Costumes, acting, directing, writing and score was great. Robert Englund is my true horror idol, but only Julian could play this role.
The film crew really delved into witchery and learned the craft. The scene at the farmhouse, with the spoiled cream, showing that the family living there was bewitched. Also, the scene on the plane, with the blue flame, showing that a witch was near, etc. What a great movie! I think Julian Sands should have starred as The Warlock in the third film, but the actor, Bruce Payne, did a fantastic job! The third Warlock movie was darker and more scary than the first two.
Julian and Richard were perfect! If a couple of American men had done this it would have looked like QPark shouting/singing Baby Got Back at a bus station...
This scene use to scare the hell out of me and it still does. It's exactly how I see something like that going down because the body has a natural desire to expel things that don't belong in the system so the swelling makes sense. It was like a bodily infection.
Don't worry, the devil does not have real magical powers. There has been demon possessions in the past, that is why priest has been able to cast out demons by excersism. The movie "The Exersist' was based on a true story, but the movie was made to be more elaborated than what happened in real life.

What was great about this scene is how well it's done with just makeup and audio FX. There are two voice tracks. One is, I assume, the actress sounding creepy, and the other is this deep, demonic voice which is probably what Satan really sounds like. What's interesting is, the directors said this and the sequel have no tie in, but they do. Satan promised the Warlock that if he assembled the bible, he'd become the first begotten son. Well, TECHNICALLY he did assemble it, and in part 2 Satan's child WAS born in the Warlock's image. Maybe that tidbit was unintentional, but I can imagine the Warlock going to Hell, getting reamed out by Satan, but the Warlock calling him out and Satan being like, "Shit. I DID say that. Okay sonny boy. Don't screw up this time!"
Same! I had to be around 9 or 10 years old when I first watched this movie, given the fact that it was released in 1989. I remember watching it with my dad and being terrified of this very scene, but I was trying to so hard not to act afraid in front of my dad. It's funny when you think about the things that stick with you in your memory. I remember bugging the hell out of my dad to see this movie, cause I was in a horror movie phase. I remember watchung movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street and not being scares at all, so I thought that I could watch this movie with no problem! Boy was I wrong! After watching this movie I started wearing a cross lol! Good times though!

Given there's a sequel, and the Warlock is called "The Son of Satan" by the Druids, I guess that means he did his duty. There is a noteworthy bit: Zamiel said to reassemble it, but Zamiel didn't say to speak God's name in reverse. So in essence, the bit where he tries to speak the name in reverse was actually the Warlock acting on his own. Plus, I imagine if speaking the name in reverse was the whole point of the Grimoire, then surely it's creators would have spoken it themselves. It's like creating a spell to destroy creation but creator of said spell never using it. Zamiel likely knew that he'd fail to undo creation, but at least he got what he wanted; the book reassembled.

Plus there is another bit to think about, they both have the same kind of humor, they both love the color black, and since Zamiel brought the Warlock from the 1700s or earlier to the late 1980s to early 1990s, he could have been the same character. In the second movie, there is a scene where the Warlock is shown in a pilgrim outfit, black outfit, white skin, blonde hair.

Warlock in the 2nd film, he didn't kill unless he had to or there was an obstacle in his way. The Warriors were in his way, so yeah, he had to fight them. But did he actively try to end them? Nope. He subdued them, but thats about it. Remember the near end? He tied them up, knocked out Kenny, and after acquiring the last stone from Sam, he just left her there. It was only after they thwarted him during the summoning, that he actively tried to end them. Warlock in the 1st film? He cursed a woman he didn't have to (she wasn't after him before the curse). He chopped off a man's finger for a ring cause he liked it (cosmetic item, not for power), then killed him via biting out his tongue. And then the child (way younger than those high school teens in 2nd film) whom he killed, then extracted body fat from to brew his potion for flying. Only reason I'm not counting the psychic or the amish dude was because, following orders from Zamiel, and Amish dude was in the way. Only ones the 2nd warlock killed but didnt have to was the Church Goer woman and maybe the Taxi Driver. In both, they had an ultimate goal, but the 1st Warlock was more ruthless than the 2nd Warlock. If the 1st one didn't kill the guy for a "nice ring" and didn't curse a woman just cause he felt like it. Then I would agree that the 2nd one is more ruthless. But if both characters are indeed the same character, then we'd both be wrong lol.
This movie should be in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4. With Julian Sands as a special guest appearance. Also Arthur Spellman, the half brother of Sabrina Spellman. He is aware of the Eldritch Terror and the belief that the true child of the Devil is to be born. There is a prophecy that Lilith will bear the child of Lucifer and on the arrival of the Eldritch Terror. The child will be fully grown and will control both Faustus Blackwood and the Eldritch Terror using the Grand Grimoire to destroy the world and leave Hell as the only part of the Earth. But a word of caution to this prophecy, if the Child of both Angel and Mortal and the Child of both Warlock and Mortal fights then the devils son and the Eldritch Terror will fall and all that was once evil in Greendale will be fully destroyed.
I love how Satan kept his promise. He said the warlock will become the son of Satan of he brings together his bible. The warlock does bring together his bible, he just dies before he can read in reverse God's name. In Warlock Armageddon, the Warlock can regenerate and is almost immortal, as you'd imagine the son of Satan would be.
If the warlock brings together all 3 parts of Satan's bible he gets to be the "one begotten son." (Pretty much, he gets to be Jesus). That's pretty much a useless reward. If everything is undone, nothing would exist. No earth, no Jesus, nothing. Not even the warlock would exist. What a foolish quest. Good movie though.
Riddle me this if she was such a phony medium how did she manage to conjure a demon? Surly no parlor trick on earth could actually summon one. She was a hoax . Soo how did she summon one without sed spell , proper incense, some really powerful and personal item and or focus and a human willing soul.
I suppose, in fiction, even the most phony conjurer has a kind of reason to become one, an underlying subconscious path to walk; a calling... maybe the mind is more open to the possibilities to open the gates, lift the veils into eternity. Maybe, in this fictional case, its just the presence of the Warlock, which lets the walls of logic burst :D
I'd wish they kept in the original version of this scene, which was much different than this one. Maybe Lionsgate can release a Uncut or Directors cut of Warlock, when that happens.

Sands' can best be described as wooden. He was the same in everything, often making a hash of the part he was playing through his poor performances. The truth will out.

"Zamiel" seems to be the writer using an alternative pronunciation of the word Samael. As the warlock says, he has many names. Samael in this context takes on more of a Gnostic/Christian meaning. In judaism, Samael is not "evil" he's ultimately just an angel doing "God's" will. The name Samael is more proper for a singular entity, as the word "satan" in hebrew is not a name, but a generic word that doesn't refer to any specific being in the hebrew bible.

Best era of Film ever. The Special were good enough and they were surpassed by great acting and story.
Those were the good old days - VHS days with the really good horror that didn't require CGI - man...the nostalgia!
this is one of those experimental type movies I put alongside films like The Prophecy. Just a breath of fresh air to me.

Same! I had to be around 9 or 10 years old when I first watched this movie, given the fact that it was released in 1989. I remember watching it with my dad and being terrified of this very scene, but I was trying to so hard not to act afraid in front of my dad.
It's funny when you think about the things that stick with you in your memory. I remember bugging the hell out of my dad to see this movie, cause I was in a horror movie phase. I remember watchung movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street and not being scares at all, so I thought that I could watch this movie with no problem! Boy was I wrong! After watching this movie I started wearing a cross lol! Good times though!

Given there's a sequel, and the Warlock is called "The Son of Satan" by the Druids, I guess that means he did his duty.
There is a noteworthy bit: Zamiel said to reassemble it, but Zamiel didn't say to speak God's name in reverse.
So in essence, the bit where he tries to speak the name in reverse was actually the Warlock acting on his own.
Plus, I imagine if speaking the name in reverse was the whole point of the Grimoire, then surely it's creators would have spoken it themselves. It's like creating a spell to destroy creation but creator of said spell never using it.
Zamiel likely knew that he'd fail to undo creation, but at least he got what he wanted; the book reassembled.

Plus there is another bit to think about, they both have the same kind of humor, they both love the color black, and since Zamiel brought the Warlock from the 1700s or earlier to the late 1980s to early 1990s, he could have been the same character.
In the second movie, there is a scene where the Warlock is shown in a pilgrim outfit, black outfit, white skin, blonde hair.

But you did say "much more ruthless". Warlock in the 2nd film, he didn't kill unless he had to or there was an obstacle in his way. The Warriors were in his way, so yeah, he had to fight them.
But did he actively try to end them? Nope.
He subdued them, but thats about it.
Remember the near end? He tied them up, knocked out Kenny, and after acquiring the last stone from Sam, he just left her there.
It was only after they thwarted him during the summoning, that he actively tried to end them.
Warlock in the 1st film? He cursed a woman he didn't have to (she wasn't after him before the curse). He chopped off a man's finger for a ring cause he liked it (cosmetic item, not for power), then killed him via biting out his tongue.
And then the child (way younger than those high school teens in 2nd film) whom he killed, then extracted body fat from to brew his potion for flying.
Only reason I'm not counting the psychic or the amish dude was because, following orders from Zamiel, and Amish dude was in the way.
Only ones the 2nd warlock killed but didnt have to was the Church Goer woman and maybe the Taxi Driver.
In both, they had an ultimate goal, but the 1st Warlock was more ruthless than the 2nd Warlock.
If the 1st one didn't kill the guy for a "nice ring" and didn't curse a woman just cause he felt like it. Then I would agree that the 2nd one is more ruthless.

The warlock does bring together his bible, he just dies before he can read in reverse God's name. In Warlock Armageddon, the Warlock can regenerate and is almost immortal, as you'd imagine the son of Satan would be.
