@@seanswinton6242 cause you are an idiot and dont know that Pete Rose ACCEPTED the ban from the HOF in agreement that MLB wouldnt investigate his gambling further.
@@brettt141I appreciate the immaturity of your response. Name calling a total stranger like a prepubesant child is juvenile. If doing such a thing feeds your ego and enhances your manhood, enjoy yourself. You just exposed your character to the world. My opinion on Pete Rose being in the MLB Hall Of Fame was the result of the legitimate and real work he put in with no steroids or PED's like those recently admitted or are under consideration. His stats and video speak for itself. Yes, legally he did accept the ban from baseball. Yes it is legally binding. However times change, people change, and so do opinion. Just because a ban is said to be permanent doesn't mean it has to be eternal. Like laws can be changed, bans can be lifted. I believe you can't tell the story of the Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine" without including Pete Rose and same goes for a sincere and true history of MLB. Remember, alcohol was once banned during Prohibition, now you are free to go and buy alcohol if you wish. I feel eventually Pete Rose will be placed in the Hall Of Fame, it will moat likely be posthumously. Especially now that sports betting has become mainstream and big business.
This is the question to ask Russo.....Did you have a clearly elucidated "steroids = No Hall" standard in say 1999 or 2000? The answer for every voting sportswriter is No. You can't retroactively apply it 7 years after the fact. Rules, laws and norms typically don't function that way. They should be in.
Well some time things go on that the consequences are not known of. Maybe in 99 or 00’ they weren’t aware of the level of use steroids were being taken at and they didn’t fully understand the advantages gained by them. Maybe some professionals and scientists but I can assure you the public didn’t understand the science behind them like they do now because of continued education on the matter. It’s kind of like cigarettes they put into place everyone could do it at first heck there wasn’t even age restrictions in the beginning but as time goes and more data is collected and processed the truth about the substance come to light and so Congress takes steps to right there wrongs. Maybe baseball saw the unfair advantage that a lot of individuals were taking the positions of very promising young talented players who stayed natural. being surpassed not by hardwork or years of dedication to a craft but rather by individuals who decided to put a substance into their body with long term Heath impacts and they couldn’t keep up because they refused to tear there body down. It’s a difficult situation. I love bonds and Sosa! But until we got honest and do a one place standard system across the board for those to get in and base it just off of the level of play on the diamond a player put up I can’t support it because the biggest tragedy the hall of fame has ever committed still hasn’t been righted and Rose deserves to be in.
@@JOKICisdGOAT the case against Rose is much stronger precisely bc of what I'm talking about. It was well known for decades that gambling on baseball would keep you out of the Hall. It was only clear to any player that steroid use (of any kind) would severely jeopardize your HOF chances in about 2004, 2005. Clemens and Bonds had no real idea what they were risking their legacy bc they can't predict the future. They had no idea people would suddenly start really caring about steroids and wanted heads to roll.
@@Osideous very true because of Frank Thomas Mike Piazza pugs Rodriguez Jeff Bagwell and Big Papi were PED users. Those players should never be in the Hall of Fame..
I am NOT a fan of baseball at all, but back when Sosa, Bonds, McGwire, Griffey, and these guys were doing their thing baseball was fun to watch, and the only reason I watched was to see them hitting home runs chasing that record.
Russo never agreed with Bonds being in. I remember calling his radio show 14 years ago and he shut me down immediately. But there’s no question Bonds should get in. If not the inconsistencies in the process, look at the numbers alone. And I’m not even talking about the Home Run Record.
Some players used PEDs in that era, some used cocaine in the 80’s, some used pinetar or other substances to help, some bet on the game and some stole signs with video cameras. Baseball is one of the few sports where some elements of cheating or asterisk necessity are prevalent throughout its history. There is the moral argument for people that did it the right way but without the asterisk they seem to be losing history as for example the hits leader and home run leader are not in the hall of fame. Not to mention at that time due to the standards of the league it is virtually impossible to prove who did or didn’t break the rules. Sure Ortiz gets away with a potential positive test but who knows if that was an isolated incident;( I think of it like drinking and driving; it’s illegal and yet it often occurs and is done by more than are willing to admit it, just because you only got caught once or have yet t be caught does not invalidate that possibility). So I feel it should be treated as we assume the worst and judge from there allowing for asterisk to help explain the history and then allow the development of the game to show how it progressed.
Ortiz continued to play for many more years well after the steroid era and produced great numbers. Cano got busted melky Cabrera got busted and suspended Ortiz did not.
@@Xenlacasa45 and many people viewed Barry Bonds as a hall of famer before any steroid use was alleged. The true thing is no one will ever know if and when on any of the allegations. Extremely unlikely but hypothetically one of the notable steroid scandal players could be telling the truth; I doubt it but that possibility exist because of the lackluster handling of testing by MLB and the fact we are not omniscient. My main point was that because of this; anyone associated with such allegations should be treated equally because they don’t really know who was or wasnt connected to PEDs from that era. I would be willing to bet that there was countless others that never were caught or lacked the natural abilities that some of these people had to be superstars even with PEDs and the fact that juicing doesn’t just equate to HRs automatically.
@@shaund823 Idk man sounds like a hate campaign against Ortiz. Nobody would have said anything if Ortiz got it last year or any other year. He played well after the steroid era at a high level hitting over .300. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
I remember MLB was riding on Bond, and Sosa was smashing those HR. Baseball ratings were trash before then and MLB knew it but ignore it because of the rating. But it is what it is. Hypocrisy at it finest.
@@AlwaysHalloween000 your a HUGE reason why baseball boring...nobody wanna watch a 2 hour game for 1 score and good pitching. Just like nobody wanna see a 3-6 defensive game in football
The issue with PED banning rule is there seems to be one rule for Bonds and others while other people who were caught are not held to the same rule because they cried in a news conference afterwards. There is no go consistent standard which is an example of why baseball sucks now and all never reach the levels it did during that era.

Did Bonds ever test positive? I thought the only thing that linked him was sealed testimony that leaked about him taking the clear or cream on accident?
No, he actually did test positive. Twice. That came out in the federal indictment that was unsealed in 2007. They had a positive test on him from November 2000, the year he jacked 49 HRs.
@@whitenoisejack I’ve read differently that it was HGH in his system not steroids, either way there are many players like Mike Piazza, Jeff Bagwell, and obviously big Papi that failed and are still in the HOF
@@vincew4297 Oh you're right, so many of those guys were doping. I'm sure if Barry had been on better terms with the media, he may have gotten in. But yeah, according to the federal indictment, it was anabolic steroids. The indictment says this: "During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances for Bonds and other professional athletes." So it sounds like it was anabolic and other substances. And then in 2003 he was shown, in court, positive tests for anabolic steroids. @@MikeB-mo1tk That's true. And I just can't see any reason a trainer would knowingly put anabolic steroids, a body-altering substance into a treatment and give it unknowingly to his client unless they had an agreement. So you know where I stand on Bond's knowledge of the whole thing.

He didn't fail any drug test. He didn't sign any document, excluding him from The Hall
The writers who vote, and The Hall of Fame aren't doing their job if they don't include the best players
On their plaques, make the case, both ways, the good and the bad, but let the fan make the final judgement.
Your HEAD does not grow like that
....other things on your body can get bigger..but not your head,THAT size in 15 years..it just doesnt happen
Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Pete Rose all= HALL OF FAME!!!!👍
I definitely think Pete Rose deserves to be there. He never bet against a team he was managing. He was the complete baseball player and he did it without steroids.
Great point...
Exactly!!!
That’s actually what it’s all about.
This is exactly how I imagined an argument between Stephen a smith and Russo to go
Screaming over each other to get a word in.
Barry Bonds does not have to be in the HOF to be remembered forever as one of the greatest baseball players with or without PED.
true, but Barry Bonds deservers to be in the HOF. the HOF is fraudulent now.
Yes sir! I haven't watch a game in years. It's boring to me now lol.

First Take talk about baseball??? Love it. Something other than basketball
Mike Piazza? Ivan Rodriguez? Jeff Bagwell? David Ortiz? HOF? But Bonds can't get it? Clemens can't get in? Arod?
In a era where cano melky Cabrera etc it was the testing era they got caught Ortiz never tested positive if he was on the juice he would’ve got caught
Now yall want to talk MLB? Yall forgot to talk about the 2021 World Series. 😆
Most NY conversation I've ever heard feels like a spike lee movie
Only thing missing: Mike Francesa! Of course, love this as it is too.
If mike piazza made it in the hall of fame then they should as well… There only gonna let the ones they like in the hall of fame…

The cops came to my house thinking there was an argument, it was these big mouths on my tv.
I seen Bonds run from one side of the field to the other and jump over the wall to catch a home run ball. It’s was amazing!
I remember MLB was riding on Bond, and Sosa was smashing those HR. Baseball ratings were trash before then and MLB knew it but ignore it because of the rating. But it is what it is. Hypocrisy at it finest.
It was never bonds and Sosa. It was Mark McGuire and Sosa. Bonds steroid season came after the epic steroid seasons of Big Mac and Sosa
Give me a WS game 7 - 10 inning complete game 1-0 shutout *JACK MORRIS* over steroid regular season HR's by Sosa or McGuire any day

Stephen a found his new skip lmao
Finally, a calm, sensible discussion about Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens.
The issue with PED banning rule is there seems to be one rule for Bonds and others while other people who were caught are not held to the same rule because they cried in a news conference afterwards. There is no go consistent standard which is an example of why baseball sucks now and all never reach the levels it did during that era.
Baseball sucks to you but those that love baseball are in for a treat with Vladamir Guererro jr a natural modern day bonds
Bonds, Sosa, Ortiz,Clemens should all be in the HOF, barnone, argument over. Go look at baseball reference, stats are off the charts.
They need Mad Dog Russo more
Unfortunately they don't talk about baseball on this show.
There Is Plenty Of Racist In The Baseball Hall Of Fame I Don’t Hear Anyone Saying Anything About That, Bonds Should Be In Period, They Always Tryna Hold A Brother Down
Did Bonds ever test positive? I thought the only thing that linked him was sealed testimony that leaked about him taking the clear or cream on accident?
especially since Ortiz tested positive for steroids smh
No he never tested positive, which makes this whole thing even more of travesty
Great player either way, but yeah, that whole era is tainted with that stuff. I have to admit though, in 1998, I watched every McGwire/Sosa homerun with rapt attention!
5:15 What a great spot! More Mad Dog debating Stephen A. This was fun.
Two of the biggest loudmouths in sports going at it.
Yes I have a headache!!!!
Thought I saw Skip fir a quick second 😂
Those voters only did that to make Barry Bonds look bad. …..but they just made the Hall
Of Fame look bad , by not having baseballs home run leader not in the Hall Of Fame. ….and let’s not bring up anything about morals before Jackie Robinson played
Bonds had ten years to get in and his votes actually increased drastically to over 60% compared to 30% in just 2013! Bonds simply didn’t get enough votes but more then 60% of the writers voted him in that’s more then half. Too bad you need 75%
Why is Mad Dog's mic so much lower than Stephen's?
Stephen A.: I'm yelling!
Mad Dog: I'm yelling too!
Molly: I'm gonna yell stuff, but only while you're both yelling stuff.
Roger Clemens needs to be in HoF for his Oscar-worthy performance as Skidmark in Kingpin (1996), the 2nd greatest bowling 🎳 movie ever behind The Big Lebowski (1998). 🤣
Ha Ha Ha:). Two of my favorite films of all time:). Kingpin (1996) and The Big Lebowski (1997). God are they classic comedies that can be watched multiple times without getting bored. I thought there was no way for the Coen Brothers to top themselves after Fargo (1996), but it only took them one more year to do so with Lebowski:) The 90s was such a great decade for films in general:)
Am I missing something , Barry Bonds was accused but never proven right ?
No, actually the feds had two positive PED tests on him. That came out in the federal indictment in 2007.
He admitted to using "The clear" but said he didn't know it was roids
@@MikeB-mo1tk That's true. And I just can't see any reason a trainer would knowingly put anabolic steroids, a body-altering substance into a treatment and give it unknowingly to his client unless they had an agreement. So you know where I stand on Bond's knowledge of the whole thing.
@@MikeB-mo1tk Which again, is pure comedy, right? Hey, I'm an elite athlete making 11 million per year. I'm going to hire you as my personal trainer and you can put WHATEVER you want into my body. You think LeBron or Brady would allow that? Nah, Bonds lied in court about not knowing what it was because they gave him immunity before he testified, so he couldn't be prosecuted for lying. I mean, I get it, professional athletes' contracts are tied to financial incentives. And MLB had banned steroids in 1991, but for some STRANGE reason (ticket sales) weren't testing for them until 2003. Go figure.

@Lloyd Bonafide yes but he didn't test for Adderall. He tested for steroids. There's no justification behind letting Ortiz in and not Bonds. Especially since Bonds never actually tested positive se just all know
Not even a baseball guy but this was an all-time great segment.
I never liked Barry Bonds' personality either like many other people who hated him, but man, he could swing a bat better than any hitter I've ever seen. What a sham. My Angels beat them in 2002 but we had to keep walking him.
And when you guys didn’t walk him he crushed some of the furthest home runs I’ve ever seen in my life. Barry hit a homerun in that series in 9th inning with 2 outs and to this day I’m not even sure if that ball has ever hit the ground. One of the guys from the Angels dugout you could read his lips saying “that’s the furthest ball I’ve ever seen hit.”
Bonds and Clemens belong in the ⚾️ HOF!!!! So does many more superstars from the 80s and 90s!!!
First take just found their new analyst to replace Max. Also like seeing Stephen A talk about baseball for once
Hey Mad Dog: Bonds had 400 home runs and 3 MVP's before the cream steroids questions came up! Never flunked a drug test! The hypocritical biased sports writers who voted NO for Bonds entrance to HOF should be removed from voting! Only fans and players past and present should be allowed to vote!

Mad Dog & Stephen A… I miss them from the Sirius XM radio days! This could be the new Skip and Stephen A on First Take! I would love it! They both rant and yell and I’m here for it 👏🏽
I agree all of them should go in for the main reason because MLB knew what was going on. They did so much dirt, and no one is pointing the finger towards them. Messing with the baseball and etc. Sad that it's all about the writers and those that basically never played the game.
I've never understood why McGwire and Sosa saved baseball in 98. I was glued to the 96 and 97 world series. Both great series with drama.
