So that's what the thimble is used for 😲 I'm 40 years old and just found that out, all these year's I thought it was just a monopoly piece lol , but thanks for the tutorial =)
Me 2 man. Just got done patching up my lunchbox and finally had enough and needed to find out the purpose of a thimble and I'm about to be 37. For me, turns out me not using it literally is the correct way lol
When I didn’t yet have an actual thimble, I wrapped the top of my finger with sports tape. I really like it because you don’t need to worry about having the right size thimble. It can slip a little if you have sweaty hands tho. But pretty handy if you practice a sport and already have tape !
I am so grateful for the improved ergonomics I was able to learn, from the course I took with you over a year ago now. I went from "thimble? uh uh, no way, never" to "can't stitch without one". And the appearance of my stitching went to a whole 'nuther level, almost overnight. Thanks to you!
I am a self taught Artist whom was raised on a farm in the Midwest and my family made everything, grew, hunted, and church was our lives.. I miss it.. Thimbles are soooo helpful. It especially helps when pushing through heavier materials. Also, I like tailor thimbles where the tip is open; my finger perspires less. And the right sizing is critical. Great video! 👏👏👏
Good tutorial. I put a piece of double sticky tape on my middle finger and then place the thimble on top of my finger. Works great! I haven't lost the thimble down the potty yet.
I have such a small finger even the smallest thimble is still loose on my finger. I have various kind but still find them too loose :( sometimes I just use the thimble if I have to hand sew thick fabric.
Used to do lots of seam sewing when young. Without the help of a thimble thus constantly yanking the needle up after every stitch resulted in a semi-permanent "valley" on the pad of my index finger. Flesh versus metal and metal won. It's so deep that on bad days the skin there breaks open and it's like a self-inflicted minor wound. Painful too. So use the thimble!
You say if I wear it all day it'll disappear, like a watch, but I hate rings and can't stop touching things on my wrist, so unfortunately I don't think I could ever wear it when I'm not using it. I'm gonna really try to use it though
I place the timble on my ring finger.ibuse my pointer and middle finger to hold the needle specially when sewing thicker clothes.but thank u for your tips, very helpful
when you pull the thread after completing the stitch are you holding the thread between your dominant hand's ring finger and middle finger? i'm having trouble keeping the thread in the needle when i pull up.
Hi. Thanks for the tutorial. Quick question: I have medium length nails. Would this affect the size of the thimble I should get or the ability for the needle to stay on my finger? Thanks in advance.
You’re welcome! That is a great question. I would recommend using a thimble that does not have a top to it. They are known as tailors thimble that way your nails can extend out as long as they need to. The trick to a tailors thimble is you wanna make sure you practice with the side of your finger.
@@sewncompany Thank you for this tidbit! My issue isn't nail length but use of fingers an dexterity. I handsew my clothing from scratch often, as well as mend. I tried a thimble an it wasn't working well for me. I started watching more what I was doing an I use more than one finger to push needle through depending on various factors. An I use the tip of the thimble finger while sewing. Where can one find a Tailor's thimble at?
You’re welcome! I would use a piece of string to measure around the cuticle bed. Then take that string and measure it agains a ruler for the number. I believe the thimbles on the list are in cm. So measure in metric. Let me know if that makes sense.
(writing this comment with a thimble, it just means that i don't use my right middle finger to typewrite anymore hehe) i think i'll have the same issue with thible that i have with shoes, they're either ever so slightly too big or ever so slightly too small
I tried using a thimble recently but I was like a dog wearing socks for the first time, my finger just hovered around uselessly. I think I'll try again soon
I've always wondered what the use for a thimble was. Turns out me never using it was correct, it's pointless. My thumb and pointer do it all alrdy..thimble officially going in garbage
It just gives protection to push through the needle, instead of pulling it out with first two fingers because that could get tiring if you sew for a long time.
Me: *using a thimble on my pointer finger* Okay, this isn't helpful at all. I can't even grip my needle. But- There is no possible way I am doing this wrong... It's just a thimble.... Okay, perhaps I'm somehow doing this wrong. *Googles "How to use a thimble" * Me: Oh... Of course. HOw COuld I be so Shtupid?!?!

Me too
Literally the same thing here! I got here bc I need to sew a leather patch onto a jacket…

Thanks. In my 40’s, male, and first time thimble user. 😊
@@J_PIK that is awesome! You are in good company. My husband is also in his 40s and a thimble user! ☺️

Tailors thimbles are great! Glad you found one that works for you.
Cool. When I lost mine sometime. I used paper and a cello tape to create a custom thimble
This is sooo cool! My hands are aching after two hours of back stitching. Having a thimble will help so much!
I’m teaching myself how to sew, and this was very helpful!! Thank you!! 🪡 😊
You’re welcome! That is so exciting!
OMG! Thank you so much for this video! I think I can do this and it will totally save my fingers!!!!!
I have no connection to sewing whatsoever but I found this video soothing and calming. Thank you :)
This was the first i learned at beginning of apprenticeship on my way to be a Mastertailor, 50 years ago
After several trips to the store to figure out what needle hurts my fingers less. Then I see this video and now I know what a thimble is for.
I'm so glad to have found your channel.

I love your work and your tutorials are fantastic! Thank you 🪡🧵
Thank you! ❤️❤️🪡
Just beautiful. And thank you for letting us know where you purchased your thimble. It's gorgeous.
Wow I didnt know all this . Great . 😊 thank you for this info.
Where to i buy that thimble
I like thimbles that have an opening. Which sits on and hugs the finger better!
Thank u so much!!!
I tend to stab my thumb on the opposite hand as the needle comes up. Can I put it on my thumb instead?
That's what I thought it was actually for 😅
THANK YOU🥰
when you pull the thread after completing the stitch are you holding the thread between your dominant hand's ring finger and middle finger? i'm having trouble keeping the thread in the needle when i pull up.
or maybe grab the thread between the middle of the ring and pinky fingers
wonderful. thank you
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this, unfortunately punctured my pointy finger with the back of the needle trying to push it through 😅

This is so helpful, thank you Sarah! When looking for thimbles I see various sizes listed, how best to measure for a good fit if buying online?

Thanks for the instruction. Now, I know how to properly use a thimble.
