1965, One of the best years ever for music and this one was right up there. The cleanest video I've seen of this sweet song. Am I back in 1965? So nice to grow up to these songs in the 60s with all of these singing girls, so attractive in their look, their manner, their voices. Wow! It still takes me. I came to listen again after I just read Lloyd Holiday's Amazon book, The Cost of a Thing. He takes you back in a clever and quirky way, back to the great times and music of the 1960s when he was growing up. I wish I could pop back there right now and see Mom and Dad and the all the others while the beautiful music just kept coming. What a great time it was.
Ron, the only thing wrong with 1965, was that worst possible decision by LBJ to escalate the Vietnam War by sending actual armed troops (ex, U.S. Marines) that same month this song was recorded (Mar. 1965).
On this day in 1965 {May 15th} Jackie DeShannon performed "What The World Needs Now Is Love" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV network Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... The very next day on May 16th the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #88; nine weeks later it would peak at #7 {for 2 weeks} and it spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... Over the next couple of months she would perform the song on three other television programs; NBC's "Hollywood A Go-Go {June 5th}, ABC's 'Where The Action Is' {June 30th}, and ABC's 'Shindig!' {August 18th}... And one month before her 'Bandstand' appearance, on April 24th she sang the song on the Los Angeles-based syndicated television program 'Shivaree'...
And the Blossoms didn't almost fall of moving pedestals... :-) But that aside, this is a classic record... I was surprised it was only a hit in the US and Canada... I was born after its relase, but I remember hearing it on the radio a lot.
i see up top that she recorded this in the month I was born. that excites me as I always felt this song to be my own personal anthem. Now i wouldn't be surprised if it was on my actual b-day, March 20. A great tune nevertheless!!
Every time I look at her photos she appears to be an entirely different person. The best photo was on the album cover when she wore a pokka dot dress. fantastic.

Ron S 65 was the year it started to really take off while the previous year of 64 was the transitional year.

well I cant say much for the Shindig arrangement, but Jackies voice and delivery is awesome, as usual! Kudos to you, JAckie!
Great song to waltz to.
Now means always.
Bacharach adored Jackie. He said that she sang it as he wrote it.
