The America We Knew: November 1974 (a weekly chronicle of our shared cultural past)

- Elton's got John and Mike's got Moscow. (Don't ask; just watch.) Plus the usual commercials, trailers, top-40 songs and more. Some viewers have asked why these videos aren't longer. The main reason is I'm limited by what's available. I have to find clips that are specific to the month. If I see a commercial online that is tagged "1974" but not "November 1974," I can't use it. I'm also limited (only slightly) but copyright restrictions. Also, I don't want to repeat the same old "yeah, the economy and the energy crisis and the Cold War are bad" images, for fear of redundancy. Having said all that, as the months progress more material will become available (especially after wider use of VCRs). I know this because I'm already way ahead, and future videos will be so long they'll have to broken into two or three parts. I promise you it's going to be awesome and the end result will be the best series by far I've ever run on RUclips.

Today I turn 62 years young, and this video is the best gift I have received thus far, thanks Fred! I was just a 12 year old kid with my whole life ahead of me in ‘74 and I miss those days dearly. The music is what made me feel the most nostalgic in this one.
Happy Birthday !!
@@Nunofurdambiznez Thank you!!
Happy Birthday, UVF.
@@FredFlix Thanks, Fred!
Happy birthday! The 70s rocked. I was 6 when Earthquake came out. It scared the bejesus out of me!
Hey Fred, without exception you have some of the best content on YT. Thanks.
You're welcome, Firebrand. I'm glad you're enjoying my videos.
@@FredFlix Yo Fred.. what FIREBRAND said..that pretty much goes for the rest of the millions of us that watch and enjoy your videos on a regular basis!
@@Nunofurdambiznez That's very encouraging, Nunetc.
My hard-to-please husband-three years older than you and I are-is very impressed by your assemblages of “all this stuff we remember!” He just mentioned, “I don’t think *there is* Prudential Insurance any more.”
@@LeslieGMN Thank you both!
Earthquake in sensoround, lol. I forgot all about that gimmick, but quite apropo that you included it, since we just had an earthquake here three days ago. Thanks for the fond memories from the month I turned 14, Fred! 👍👍👍👍
I could have used sensoround on my honeymoon, Robert.
@@FredFlix
Lol 😁👍
1974 I was 16 / 17 yrs old. The Movie "Earthquake" the Elevator Scene Blew My Mind. One of My Favorite Year in Life. i Miss Those Years.
I need a Time Tunnel or a Way-Back-Machine... "There must be some way outta here, said the joker to the thief. There's too much confusion. I can't get no relief." 2024... we've all gone nuts.
Never saw that $10 JC Penny dress shirt ad with Christopher Reeve before!
May he RIP. 🙏
Yes on the shirt with Reeve, I was surprised I've never seen that before. The JC Penny TV ad, the 25 inch color tv for 449 $ is the equivalent of 2981 dollars today, the shirt would be 63 $ .
@@jaydouglas5847 That TV and shirt were expensive!
I had three Vegas and five Vega engines. The aluminum block engine would warp and leak oil, low enough engine oil = blown engine. I never bought another Chevy after that. Thanks Fred Flix for the vid and the reminder, Friend. 😊👍
Not a good though, obviously, HGOML.
Ah, Earthquake is another one of my favorite movies. I had a little crush on Miss Bujold. Loved her in Coma and the movie with Cliff Robertson where she had a dual role ( can't remember the name of the movie, I'm having a brain cramp.) Sensurround was a neat little gimmick. I believe we just had a bit of Earthquake with sensurround around where I live. I never felt it, but apparently everyone else did. I believe Midway and Rollercoaster were the other 2 movies by Universal that utilized Sensurround. The 70's had some of the best movies ever.
It was called Obsession, Gregg. The '70s was the last great period of American films.
Oh God. Me too she was super hot and I was 14 lol
Here's the list:
_Earthquake_ 1974
_Midway_ 1976
_Rollercoaster_ 1977
_Saga of a Star World_ (Battlestar Galactica) 1978
_Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack_ 1979
@@FredFlix, that's it. Obsession. I think maybe I was a little obsessed with her.
Yeah we had the earthquake and we felt it here in New Jersey in the movie you were talking about was obsession was Cliff Robertson in Genevieve bujold
My Mom had a '74 XR-7. White exterior, white leather interior. Just like Farrah. My Dad bought it for her for her birthday, and it had a big red ribbon on the top. Man, that was a car. My Dad had a '74 Marquis Brougham. Two door, white exterior, white leather interior.
Your Dad must have loved your Mom ❤. What a lovely gift
@@peternighswander9629 He did.
Thank you for all the work you do on these fun videos Fred!!! They are a blessing in this world today
I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks for all the work you do putting these videos together!I really enjoyed going back to my childhood via these videos!
It does my heart good to know that, Bridget.
@@Spunky3 It's my pleasure, Spunky3.
Hi Fred I was assistant manager at cinema when they brought in the big bass speakers for the sensoround
In 1974 good memories
I thought the seats were rigged to vibrate. Guess not....
@@FredFlix Dolby cinemas in AMC theaters today are rigged with butt shakers in the seats.
Sensurround for the movie Earthquake was a bunch of large concert type speakers up and down the side isles of the theater, I think they contributed to my hearing loss as well as making my ribcage vibrate
Love it, Fred. I think it's the music that makes me feel the most nostalgic. But not everything was better back then. 450 bucks for a 19 inch TV? You can get a 75 inch TV today for that price, and that's in 2024 dollars! Sensurround was essentially an LFE subwoofer channel before its time. I have a huge subwoofer that provides the same sort of sensation. You FEEL the cannon shots in Master and Commander.
Must be cool, Robert.
Elton John and John Lennon Two colossal geniuses
Thank you Fred! I enjoyed the music in that one! ❤❤❤
You're quite welcome, Chantelle.
Fred… it makes my day whenever I see a new video from you.
That's encouraging to me personally, John.
Funny thing about 'Earthquake' is that Lorne Green played Ava Gardner's father. The two were only five years apart in age in real life.
Re that Earthquake trailer, that movie was parodied in Kentucky Fried Movie as That's Armageddon, with George Lazenby in the lead role. Plus Donald Sutherland as The Clumsy Waiter. And before I forget, God do I miss National Lampoon. Can't you just imagine what they would do to skewer the world of today? ThNks Fred!
They would need a phone book-sized magazine...but, wait! What's a phone book?
Watching this is good for my soul!
Another great trip down nostalgia lane. Glad to see Lenny mentioned here, an excellent if somewhat depressing movie that isn't talked about much these days. (6 Oscar noms, no wins.) Also, nice to see Chris Reeve four years before Superman.
Glad you enjoyed it, gittes.
big coin big furniture with tv inside ! zenith was once a very highly regarded line this was the era of big sound audio equipment hi fi !!!
This series has great edits, I love the foreshadowing
That JC Penney TV would have cost $3000 today. Look at how much bigger your screen would be now compared to that 19” TV. I don’t think my 1974 self even dreamed of a TV that huge!!! Thank you Fred for another walk thru my rememberies 👍😃😃😃😃😃!
Sure thing, Jeff. But it's too bad the TV shows themselves didn't keep up with the grander designs and affordability.
2:14 Some background on the *WIN* button would be appropriate for the non-Boomer viewers. When Gerald Ford became President inflation was at 12.3%. He tried starting a grass roots campaign to encourage people to do more personal savings and changing personal spending habits on a voluntary basis. People doing this were encouraged to wear a WIN button standing for _Whip Inflation Now._ They rapidly became an object of ridicule Critics would wear the buttons upside down saying that *NIM* stood for "No Immediate Miracles," "Nonstop Inflation Merry-go-round," or "Need Immediate Money." Anyway, President Ford had given a speech on 8 October 1974 announcing Whip Inflation Now and if anyone filled out a form and mailed it in saying they agreed with him they would receive a WIN button in the mail. And as seen on the magazine cover in Fred's clip, the Democrats did increase their majorities in both Houses of Congress in the 5 November mid-term elections.
Good info, Firebrand. I didn't remember that.
I think Watergate was the main reason why Democrats won big that year.
November 1974 the month I turned 8 years old and knew everything. I still know everything just not as much as I did back then.
Great memories ❤❤
I Was 16 In November '74, What Memories! At Least For A Few Moments You Can Go Back In Time, It's A Real Nice Feeling. Thank You.
My pleasure, Watcher.
Thank you, the 70's were some swingin' times!🥸💯💥👍!
Even more than I remembered, Frank.
Thank you very much for the video. It brought back so many memories.❤
You're welcome, l j.
Farrah and that cougar rode up on the beach like 👑s!
That was Christopher Reeve in that shirt commercial.
Thanks. That's probably why Fred added the caption that said Christopher Reeve.
Another great job, Fred. Queen drop noted-can't wait for your next one!
Thanks a lot, CAM.
Man, Farrah had legs to die for. Thanks Fred!
My pleasure, Doug.
Wow, Sensurround... and Elton John always on my mind. 🎵🎶🎵
Jesus, I/we were sooo young, Fred. 💜🤟
And we thought we knew it all, Mercedes.
@@FredFlixDefinitely not all but at least what I didn't want. 💜🤟☺️
Good to see the John Lennon concert footage... but also sad 😢
Nice job, Fred. Unfortunately we don't seem to share as much of a culture now as we did then.
0:42 - Christopher Reeve was a regular around this time on the CBS soap opera, LOVE OF LIFE.
3:28 - The announcer sounds like longtime Carol Burnett & ABC announcer Ernie Anderson.
9:50 - According to the US Inflation Calculator, that tv would cost $2832.28 today. No wonder my famlly didn't have a color tv then!
Thanks, Jon. TV costs were also why there was such a thing as a TV repairman.
I disagree everything we do today is broadcast or posted right into our phones for us to share, weather we want to or not
The JC Penny TV ad for the 25 inch color tv @ 449 $ is the equivalent of 2981 dollars today, the shirt would be 63 if purchased today $ . As of today JC Penny has white dress shirts from 11.99 to 29.99. Same shirts cost today, in real terms, 50 percent less than in 1974. TV's are 5 times cheaper. 3 times as large and 10 times more resolution.
Thank you, China
Thanks Fred 👍
Great stuff as always Fred! I was nine at the time, and I remember how wild and scary it was seeing Earthquake at the theater. It also featured an unknown at the time, Victoria Principal sporting that funky, mod afro.😊 I didn't really take note until years later, when she became one of my favorites, from Dallas fame of course.
She looked amazing in that film, tigre ... hair notwithstanding.
Our band bought an old pair of Cerwin-Vega “Earthquake” speakers, which were fully folded horns with 18” drivers. The wood cabinet was coated with fiberglass for extra rigidity. Loved those things.
I want to go back please.
What a great time to be 14! I didn't get to experience Earthquake in Sensarround, but my brother and I saw EVERY Charlton Heston movie in the theater then, loved em all. Seeing all those magazine covers, boy that takes me back. I read and collected comics, my older brother bought Natl Lampoon, my grandmas read Enquirer and celebrity mags like Rona Barrett, my sisters read all the teen mags... man I loved em all! Thank you Fred! 😊😊😊
I used to haunt the magazine and comic stands, Doug. Not anymore.
Joe Asked Paul Simon,"Why did you ask where I went"? °I sell Mr Coffee "...
Good point, Eli.
Wow, when that cowboy rookie won the game on Thanksgiving I was 5 days old
That game and year helped me become an NFL fan.
I was 13 and a Redskins fan, watching the game as it was broad cast. Thanks for reminding me, not!
In 74' I read that 42% of high schoolers did or had worked at a McDonalds. I was one of em'.
Did I see Eddie Van Halan on guitar behind Elton John and John Lennon?!
I remember being afraid every time I went to the movies, that there would be an earthquake.
The Chevy Vega! The biggest piece of scrap metal ever to disgrace the roads!
Fred does it again !
Thanks, Fred!
I was 13 in 74. Earthquake must have had a decent run because I know I saw Jaws in 75 before Earthquake.
I saw Lenny at the drive in, months after its release, I was twelve years old at the time, and my parents couldn't afford a babysitter. I liked the movie, even though it was depressing, and being a kid, I could not understand what was going on, despite reading and hearing about Lenny Bruce before I saw the film.
Starring Elkie Summers! Lol! Forgot about her!
that 19"TV is 2800 bucks in todays dollars.
From this year. Being only 6 yo, i remember the Earthquake movie only!
What a pity the only place one can see adaptations of Dickens is on PBS...if you're lucky.
Thanks, FredFlix. 😁
You're welcome, Luis.

BT - EXPRESS IN 2024 !!!!!!!!!
The concert footage of Elton and John is a TV movie that's not actually them just lookalikes, actors.
I was about to mention that. At first I thought "cool" then I realize that's s clip from the made for tv movie "John and Yoko" from the 80s.
I was skeptical about the JCPenney ad, as Chris Reeve would have been a complete unknown in 1974, and it wouldn’t have made sense to have his name superimposed on the screen. I looked into it, and the date is legit - he would have just graduated from Julliard and was appearing on a soap opera in New York at the time, and would have been doing tons of commercials, too. But he was an unknown, and his name on the screen would not have made sense. I’m guessing it was added when the commercial ran as part of some kind of “before they were stars” special on network TV, probably some time in the 90s or 90s.
I added his name to the screen.
@@FredFlix Haha! Well, that explains it!
B.F.Goodrich , a classic company but "we're the orher guys" is a lousy slogan.
Its like a restaurant proclaiming 'Hey, we got leftovers "
Sensurround was essentially just really loud sound effects. Valerie Perrine never looked better then in "Lenny"...
As I recall, the seats vibrated....when Valerie was on screen! No, seriously, for Earthquake, many (though not all, I guess) seats were rigged somehow. It was more than just the volume. I enjoyed it a lot.
Well, now I've read comments explaining how it was done, so the seats were not rigged, apparently.
Um, no it wasn't about volume.
@@FredFlix Nope, the seats weren't rigged. There was a very low frequency soundtrack delivered by rented bass speakers that would cause vibrations. From the Wikipedia entry: _The low-frequency vibrations rattled tiles and plaster, too, leading to damage in some venues; a safety net was installed at Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to catch errant pieces of plaster falling from the ceiling. When Earthquake was screened in Chicago, the head of the Chicago Building and Safety Department demanded that the system be turned down or removed to prevent damage to city theaters._
@@FredFlix I saw the movie on New Year's Eve 1974. It certainly felt as though the seats were rigged and, as I recall, the source of the vibrations was a topic of much discussion both that night and with other people later (even up to only a few years ago on line). I remember my BIL or someone in '74 pointing out the enormous speakers attached to the walls of the cinema, but the ongoing discussion makes me think that the method wasn't much published back then. Good for a lot of giggles and jokes, though.
Great memories! The football segment was too long though
but we still remember Clint Longley
Clint Longley would've made a great porno name
Great to see the Washington REDSKINS!
Yea, you have to go way back almost 4 years to get to use that racial slur
