Panhard Bracket × 4BT Cummins Discovery #41 [Land Rover Build]

- Fabricating a custom bracket from tube, for attaching the panhard-bar that locates my front axle under the Rover, but clear from the swing of the pitman-arm on the newly mounted Land Cruiser FJ80 steering gearbox.
~ PART#41 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

Wonderful as always both in the build and the editing.
The idea of You with a Milling machine is scary 😁 endless possibilities and brackets
Mill + Lathe + TIG = overbuild & swap all the things!
It is hard not to feel like a total hack after watching your work come together... thank you for setting such a great example. Hope it is a great 2020 for us all.
I'm pumped for 2020!
🙅🏽♂️ looks good!! And finally a new episode!!
About time haha!
Some serious talent there.
Re affirms my decision to do ‘economics/geography/art’ at school, instead of ‘tech drawing/metalwork/woodwork‘ was a bad one. Luckily this format that is RUclips has a few individuals to inspire my desire to learn these skills and more than a few tips at an older age. Keep up the great work. Many thanks.
Hey thanks! Same here, would've had such a big head start if I would've aimed more towards working with my hands instead of computers... but ah well, got there eventually 🔧
Another update awesome
Next step is fairly easy (and shiny!) so it should be in video pretty quick.
@@Tinker1837 great !! I will stay tune
Tubular! I hope those washers hold up though. They are a bit thin and may wallow out. But of course you can just beef it up later if it does 👍🏻
Those washers are the same thickness as the old bracket where that bolt went thru... so I hope so too 🤞
@@Tinker1837 Cool. They looked like thin fender washers on the video. Should be good to go then!
@@Bread996 They're not the higher grade steel like that DOM tubing, so there's still a possibility of the holes getting out of round, but definitely something I'll have to keep an eye on.
Quality project mate !! Discovery’s are such awesome 4wds, good to see one getting the love they deserve.
Doing what I can to keep at least this one out of the scrapyard!
Genius. Damm you with your killer fabrication and creative cinematography skillz 😎
I try! It's weird how the process of recording it all seems to make me want to try new things or get more creative with both building & filming.
Finally ! :) New series :)
I'm slow haha
Nice new bumper.
That's from "Tactical Rovers" and it's tough! Taken some big hits, including a crazy person in a newer Subaru that ended up totaled while I just had scuffed powdercoat.
That coping tool was genius..
Glad I took a break to make it... saves so much time!
That is an awesome project. I did a complete GM running gear in my rover. 5.3 6l80e 241tcase and dana axles. I had to change the location of my pan hard bar and I did a high steer setup. I had some bump steer so now at ride height pan hard bar and drag link are flat it helped a lot and it is stronger since I used all 1 ton stuff.
Sounds badass! I'm excited to build a set of axles & long travel suspension for mine. I'm all about spherical joints & tubing setups these days, & 1 tons like your setup would be mint.
One of the best channels ever.. Just be faster posting these videos
I'm so slow! Definitely something I hope to improve in 2020.
Хорошо получилось, молодец.
I'm very happy with the way it came together!
I was worried about lateral loading where the 2 supports connect to the plate until I saw the gussets er whatever you call the fillers... literally breathed a sigh of relief. Looks great!
I had thought of maybe adding another tube or 2 to brace the loads in the direction of the bar, instead of just gussets, but it ended up looking way overkill.
Excellent work bro.excellent👍👍👍
Thanks!
Effective, functional, Beautiful!
Turned out not half bad :D
Выглядит очень красиво! 👍
Thanks!
You are so skilled man, I am so impressed with your work! You're a master.
Thanks! I'm no master yet, but I keep trying to learn more as I go through these projects.

Nice work
Thanks!
great job!
Hey thanks!
Awesome
Turned out better than I expected!
i would love to have the skills to weld with a mig or even with tig that is so usefull maybe i will learn it one day.
I'm decent with MIG but super hooked on TIG now that I've had a few tries with it! I found a relatively inexpensive entry level option from Eastwood (called TIG200) that doesn't cost $2,000 but can still do both steels + aluminum, unlike many chinesium units.
@@Tinker1837 Yeah i must try something like this soon and see how it goes.
genial vivement la suite
More soon!
Nice job man. Like the entire project you are doing an excellent work. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😃

Hello 👋 Tinker
We have been waiting long time for this episode finally, but is really look so good and please tell us when you will post the next episode 💪💪
Next thing I need to work on (power steering fluid reservoir) should not take too long, & glad you like :)
Oh man. I love your videos and I can't wait till you get this on the road. You are one smart and talented sumb!tch. Love how you make sure to fix whatever needs to be in order to do it right. Keep it up!
Getting close now! It makes it so much easier (and enjoyable) once I realized it didn't need to be a panic rush. Future me will be happy I took the time to do it right 👍
Nice work young man 👍😎

No, I did not have to do that thankfully.
ما شاءالله عملك ممتاز بالتوفيق يا حبيبنا 👍👍💜💜
Thanks!
I really like the look of this bracket, but is it going to be up to the high loads and impacts from off roading?
I'm confident it will, but only one way to find out... and that's finally driving it out of the shop and getting on the trails again!
Simply WoW! I would definitely pay you to work on my jeep for sure! Very nice work indeed!!
Glad you like!
@@Tinker1837, where do you reside?

Kickin ass takin names. How much longer till ur rollin coal tink!!!
Spring time is the goal to be fully road ready, gonna be awesome!
Thank you for not talking, or playing music. And starting out by saying "Whats up guys?"
You are welcome, much prefer to keep it simple & straight to the point for the most part.
This may be a dumb question but! Would it not have been easier and better to swap the bar around so the frame mount is on the passenger side? It was designed as a right hand drive vehicle so making it left had drive was a bodge to start with.
I looked into that, but sadly my axle doesn't have the brackets on the axle for the right hand drive bar... weird considering how many other things it has that are RHD bits. I figured it easier to weld things into the frame then the axle tube, plus I think that the steering & panhard bars have to swing from the same side to prevent binding & scary bump-steer effects.
Where can I get one of those magic TIG wands?!
I dug her up out of a friend's empire of dirt, must be a limited edition type of thing... Ha!
Very nice!!!👍
Took a fair bit of pondering, but turned out pretty good I think 😎
Tinker absolutely!!
From what land cruiser did you get the steering box. Heck of an idea.
FZJ60 was the donor, thanks!
🚜💭🛠️👍
Glad you like :)
You do nice work in a well-equiped shop but have a tidy up, mate. Tidy shop is a safe shop.
Thanks, but not my shop & much of the clutter is of the antique variety so I have to take care moving things.
@@Tinker1837 I know how that is mate, lucky to have access to a shop.
@@dartmoordave Very thankful for it, that's for sure!
I hope it will work, becouse in some countrys illegal to weld any thing to the frame becouse after welding metal gonna be much softer and can crack, any way I like your customizing
Thankfully the rules in my state are not excessive with things like this!
@@Tinker1837 I know about australia
Australia is very picky with those! So are out states here with the bigger cities (California, New York, etc)
👍👍👍
😎
did you have any starting budget before the start of the project or you just went for it?
I didn't, just figured in for the usual ~$5k if you do it real simple, or ~$10k if you go all out on a full powertrain swap.
@@Tinker1837 You have great skills tho.. whats your background? mechanical engineer or self taught?
Self taught, & thanks, I try!
Knowing how thin Disco chassis' are your bracket is much stronger than the frame. Check it often?
I had not heard they were considered thin, news to me! I was actually a bit impressed with the chassis as I worked with it, since it's as large & thick as most any truck up into the 3/4-ton rating that I've encountered. And fully boxed too, where many are c-channel, but then that's the classic debate of stiffness versus flexibility. A full tube frame build would be the dream, but a long way off yet. This build will likely never "end" 😎
@@Tinker1837 Corrosion is the devil of Disco's. Favourite areas are outrigger chassis brackets, rear body floor/inner wheel arches/rear body on 4 doors around door sills. If its got a towbar make sure the attachment points are sound, major chassis rusting at rear chassis legs and x member, its not unknown for the whole rear x member and towbar to tear away. Soak the box chassis in old engine oil regularly, the original engine would do it for you. Be aware the centre diff planet gears are fragile and along with the halfshafts, don't like being shock loaded climbing rocks, snatching stuck vehicles etc. Treat it kindly and you'll be OK.
@@dartmoordave Good to know! My chassis was very nice but is getting in need of restoration thanks to Michigan's extreme use of salt thru our half-year long winters. I'll make sure & give those points a careful eye when I start the frame clean-up come spring time 👍
@@Tinker1837 Didn't want to frighten you but here in the UK my '94 Trooper with C section chassis has no body rust at all and surface rust on the chassis but you won't ever find a '94 Disco here either; still running or not rotten. Even if the engine is doing its best to lube the chassis! Keep washing the mud traps.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you like :)
I really liked the technology of copying the pipe profile...(I'll take it on Board : -) and you are not in instagram by chance...
I was happy with that DIY tool worked, feel free to use the idea!
What city are you located near?, I’m located near Ludington I just discovered your channel I think what your doing is pretty sweet
Grand Rapids, but north is my heading for good times about 90% of the time 👍
Is it gonna clear tire at full turn?
Yeah, first thing that the front tires can hit is actually the rearmost corners of the front bumper if you can believe it... weird, but I'll trim that up before the first trail run.
Did you change the front springs to handle the weight of the 4BT? I was wondering because I was planning on using a 1.9 tdi in my D1, but I’ve found a 4bd1t Isuzu with only 52k on it for dirt cheap. It is very similar to the 4BT in most specs except it isn’t as tall.
I did not yet, but will for sure after I get it in a scale, that way I can calculate the spring rate to restore it back to the lift height before all this work.
🤗💪🤗
💪😎👍
Really like your work on that bracket but would all that load be basically transferred through the 2 small washers that are only tacked in place?
Good to see more progress 👍🏼
Those washers are actually pretty big (2" across & 1/8" thick) and same thickness as the old bracket, also they are fully welded around (with TIG)
Amazing welding skills! Would you consider boxing the bracket for added strength? And little brace to give little more lateral support left to right? Just my opinion but I feel that track bar bracket is putting a lot of torque on the welded joint at the frame.
If you make a couple of hundred improvements, the Bentley will surely turn out of the Land Rover
Hahaha! Oh man that got me 😆
How does the tire clear at full lock?
It's been a tight fit ever since I lifted it 4" and installed the 35" tires... going to need a little trimming before it gets 37" or 39" tires 😎
@@Tinker1837 sweet!

Do you have footage of the modified Discovery being driven..? Oh do you have to get an engineers certification on all your modifications prior to on road use?
Not yet with the 4BT installed but lots from before the V8 had issues here in this playlist (down near the bottom of the playlist there are some trips I recorded) ruclips.net/p/PL0fo2S6vPzlHRu8oH5bXgUFSGmPkvubag And thankfully I don't need any certification for putting the 4BT Rover back on the road, at least in this state in the USA 👍

Editing the next video right now actually :)
Wuts up tinker Im waiting for your First test drive for so long plz dont make us wait
Very soon! Working on video edits now :)

Thanks :P
2 questions.
1.Was this a factory modification as you did show a cad drawing mid video or did you come up with the drawings yourself?
2. Will you be fabricating a sump guard to protect the underside oil pan of your beautifull 4BT?
Nice work. Thankyou!
1) That was a drawing I came up with, actually the 3rd version of it by the time I did the filming, but ended up very near true to life from it. 2) Yes, for sure! I've often thought of a dry-sump system for it, but due to complexity that will have to wait for a later phase of the project when I dive deeper into the engine build.
@@Tinker1837 Appreciate your reply. Thankyou. 👍
Maybe you can make a spacer to another frame?
Not sure I understand...

Yessir! Funny timing too because I just uploaded the next one! I'm off work, so have more Rover time which is nice, but staying safe so far. Hey maybe because I'll have a TIG welder here shortly :D

Where did you get all those parts for your Discovery ?
I also have one and I need parts
Lots & lots of sources! For used parts Ebay is fantastic for finding deals, for OE replacement parts I like Atlantic British, for bolt-on upgrade parts Lucky8 is great, for fabrication parts I like Ballistic Fabrication, & for just about any racing/performance parts Summit Racing is my favorite.
Where did you get the bullbar from
That's from "Tactical Rovers" and it's tough! Taken some big hits, including a crazy person in a newer Subaru that ended up with a totaled car while I just had scuffed powdercoat.
Cheers mate I might have to get one for my disco haha
Oktoberfest.... isn’t that in Cincinnati ?
That hoody came from a fun event in Grand Rapids that was in John Ball park, but outgrew it & is now held at Riverside park (if you're in the area & interested). But aside from the huge one in Munich, from my understanding the big ones in the USA are there in Cincinnati & a close second in size out in La Crosse WI.
