- With the new Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser steering gear installed I can start fabricating custom links to the axle & wheel.
~ PART#40 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

Starting to get back into wrenching on the Rover after some time off to recover from an injury, and gladly too... because being stuck at home gets maddening!
Think you'll make it to SCARR 2020? I'd love to see this thing in person!
@@teknikulrighter8454 Would be great to! Only been to Texas once but would very much like to visit again.
Tinker u suffered from what injury amigo?
Teknikul Righter yes where we can see it personally amigo? :)
what happened ? are you ok ?
Love your vids because there is no incoherent rambling about nonsense, no stupid music, just fabrication and genuine pride in work completed. Please keep it up!!!
Took me a while to realize that's what I like to do & apparently a few people don't mind watching, so will do!
Ohh dude, always you awesome me with your clean updates. Thanks for share and congrats for your truck
Happy to share :)
I want to learn to do things like this. You make it look so simple
The magic of editing can make it look even easier though! I guess I do include errors pretty often for comedic effect, so maybe not always the case. But the best way to learn is to dig in! Most everything I've learned was either just going for it or working with skilled friends 👍
Awesome, glad you're feeling better m8!
Thanks, been chomping at the bit to get back in the shop this last month!
Never a disappointment. Love these videos, your skills, attention to detail and the way they motivate me to get my truck done. Hope to meet you on the trail someday.
For sure, can hardly wait to get back to it!
No problem at all man! Glad I could help out in some way!
It's much appreciated :)
I really enjoy watching your videos it always inspires me to find time to work on my own vehicles and I appreciate how you can get so much done without having to have brand new expensive equipment that guys like us just can't afford most times. Been watching you use that old dewalt drill since I started watching you. I cant wait to see this beast on the road and I'm sure you cant wait to get behind the wheel keep up the awesome work! Also hope to possibly see compounds on that 4bt in the future
Yep, can hardly wait myself & will do! Compounds or something odd like a supercharger + turbochager combo would be good fun :D
Hope ya heal up fast dude. Cant wait to see er roll buddi!
Thanks man! Same here, going to be tearing thru snow banks before too long 👍
Gotta take care of yourself cobber. If ya dont who'd finish the truck? And we cant have that now can we/ lol. . What a brilliant effort and mods. As the other fella's are saying 'çant wait to see her roll'! Take care and cheers for sharing!
Thanks & yeah after all this work I'd hate to leave so many people hanging!
God damn dude I love your channel. First i thought that these videos are boring because you just film doing stuff, then i realized that it is the best thing about these, no extraordinary bullsh*t. Keep up the great work, greetings from Finland!❤️
Glad you like :) And you nailed just what I was aiming for with them 👍 Idea was for most of them to be halfway instructional without long drawn out ramblings & a bit of slapstick humor here & there so people don't completely fall asleep during a watch.
Tinker ❤️
I Wish You a speedy and complete recovery. Great video once again. Same great Humor and Quality.
Thanks & hopefully more to come before long :)
9:23 !
... and that input shaft is some beautiful work, when it looks factory, you know that is next level kaka : ]
Thanks! Was soooo happy when I found the splines matched up so I could do mods to the OE Rover bits.
Nice!! Still doing a wonderful job
Thanks!
Been wondering where ya been! I love this thing. Keep up the work. You're a madman!
Will do, happy to be back to work!
Hot dog! Another Tinker video is out!
About time too... I was going stir crazy!
Let's see it rolling!
Great work)
Can hardly wait to!
I liked that sparkplug joke!
:P
I wanna see the thing off roading 😁
Me too, it's been way too clean!
@@Tinker1837 that engine should be a monster in off roading because all the torque is down low where you need it when you have to crawle
@@onwheels8232 600+ ft/lbs torque at 1600rpm 😎
Молодец! Настоящий инженер!
Thanks & I guess you could say I'm a home shop engineer haha!
Похоже на хороший гараж ))
Your build is one of my favorites.👍🏼 Jerry from bullshitkorner on RUclips is building a Jeep right now but he has a 4BT waiting. I’m going to let him know about your channel and he’s going to shit himself.🤣
Thanks, and yeah they are getting more & more rare, not to mention spendy! I bet it'll be awesome when he does though... engine swap all the things! 😎
I hope your injury heals quickly. Looking forward to the next video
BTW, u gonna do any more mods to the subie?
Thank you & I hope the next is not nearly as delayed. Oh yes, have a load of ideas for that project, but with snow on the ground I need it on the road because it gets a little sketchy on the bike... not that I don't try anyway haha!
I have that same book !!!
A friend found it for me at a garage sale & makes for an interesting read & history!
Tinker, yes it does. I checked it out from the Naval base library in Japan in ‘92, and then deployed. I read it cover to cover as I traveled the ocean ⚓️🇺🇸. Great channel and projects.
Always a fun video!!!
:D
very nice work as usual!
Thanks!
And the chipmunk laughing at 2:46 had me belly laughing :-)
Sometimes that kind of thing catches me off guard when I'm editing too haha!
greetings you can try to make videos longer please I love that swap greetings from panama
I can try & welcome :)

Ever think about ditching that steering stabilizer???? Its definitely not required....could also go with hydro assist...
I actually added the big stabilizer to replace the little original one after I fit those big wheels & tires, did a lot to mitigate the steering wheel movement (especially since it was my daily at the time). Hydro assist is the plan for sure! It was part of the reason I decided to build the 1st version of this heim joint steering a few years back, and also why I went with the saginaw style pump + the FJ80 gear (all easy to mod for hydro) with the 4BT.
@@Tinker1837 yeah a lot of jeep guys just delete the stabilizer as with well maintained system and good alignment you shouldn't actually feel anything movement really. With the extra weight of the 4bt and big tires I'd imagine hydro would be a very welcome addition to your steering in low speed off road conditions lol
@@gaboonviper85 A lot of what I felt could've been related to the balancing, since it had none whatsoever until I inserted the beads. I love the way it felt going from the standard equipment to the sphericals though... so tight & precise! Yeah this rig's certainly not getting any lighter, stronger but heavier for now as funding allows.
@@Tinker1837 yeah they are nice for sure just sucks replacing them more often.....when I do my steering upgrade I will use 1 ton joints as they are cheaper and last longer lol
@@gaboonviper85 The newer teflon & kevlar lined jobs last way longer than the old metal on metal & nylon lined stuff. But there's such a crazy range of the things! From inexpensive $20 heims like mine to well north of $300
Very good
Thanks!
You will have bump steer with that much angle on the drag link right? Or is the suspension not compressed at ride height?
Nah, very little. New drag-link is at roughly the same angle as previous, & it had a great steering feel then. Quite a bit better feel than original even, so much tighter feel & no slop with these joints!
Hey Tinker nice to see these 2 new episodes and sorry to hear about your injury. Was wondering why the absence but glad you've recovered sufficiently to tinker again. A question i have is why did you go the 4BT route and not the TD5 engine or wasn't the TD5 engine available? I know they did a North American spec. but not sure if many ended up over there. You could've had some decent torque gain.
I can’t speak for Tinker on the 4BT, but no TD5 for us in the USA.
@@joekirklin Thanks for the reply Joe, that's a damn shame as the TD5 can chuck out 300bhp with the right tuning package and suits the car even at it's basic performance. Oh well the 4BT can be tuned nicely at least and i now know why 4BT's are the way to in N. America. Cheers.
Sadly yes, as far as I know Joe is correct that we don't get any of them over here AND replacement parts would be even more difficult :( But 300hp from a 4BT isn't difficult, with a single turbo, and twice or more with compound turbos... & all without any electrics involved ;)
why have you changed the steering gear box?? can´t understand the difference, the old one seems to fit fine with this engine
another thing, would this car have power steering?
Because the original Rover box would not fit with the engine in it's ideal position, and also it is much weaker than the FJ80 box that has a huge aftermarket + modding support. Power steering? Oh yes of course! It would be a nightmare without it haha! I have videos on the power steering pump + cooler, as well as videos on the engine fitting process which shows the steering gear interference issues :)
Как всегда приятно смотреть, ты молодец! Перчатки у тебя хорошие, подаришь другу из России ?)
Thanks! Those gloves are called "Durahide" by Mechanix
hello, please, what diameter of production material did you use?
The metal tube? That is 1.5" outside diameter (38mm), and 1" inside diameter (25mm), and is special strong "DOM" (drawn over mandrel) aka seamless
more videos amigo :)
Plenty more to come!
💪
😎
Can you please add an air locker on your vehicle
I think I'll use a "Tru Trac" in the front diff & a "Detroit" in the rear diff (my center diff is open with a cane actuated locker).
Dang bro, I wish you wouldn't speed up the video. It would be nice to be able to enjoy your videos for longer. And maybe even have some voice over narration so we know what you are doing and why you are doing it. Thanks for the videos. I would love to be able to put a 4BT in my ride.
I just get worried that 30+ minutes would be too much for people on something simpler like this part. Would be really cool to get someone re-casting the old 4BT blocks, just so we could get the prices back down to something more reasonable.
fraking FINALLY
You just made me think of something funny... what if I set up one of those big digital timers on the wall & I only get to reset it when I finish a segment of the project or release a video.
@@Tinker1837 its too late now , you already finished 80% of your project .
@@MrEyad1990 At 80% ? Nah, I'm only just getting started! This is a never ending type of project, & the list is a mile long. Big axles, custom linked suspension, solar power, roll cage, extended fuel & water tanks, etc. As soon as I get my own shop it'll really take off 😎
@@Tinker1837 oh boy .
What kind of milage do you expect to get?
The MPG range should be 20-25 with a full weight loadout, & maybe closer to 18-22 once I get the 37" tires + auxiliary fuel tanks installed.
Все четко и хорошо, вот только сваренный карданчик рулевой ни есть хорошо. Ну это сугубо мое личное мнение))
👍
Согласен в вами полностью, как и тефлоновый шланг
Oh? I think maybe I misunderstood his meaning... not sure I understand.
Everything is clear and good, but the welded steering cardan is not good. Well, this is purely my personal opinion))
@@Tinker1837 You are a great master, and you have a very good project. I am waiting for the completion of the construction of your car. Comments have to be translated using Google translator))))
Where I live the law says you can't weld any steering parts.
That's a common rule, but then if we counted all the things this build is "not supposed to have" it would be a list longer than just a steering stem haha!
@@Tinker1837 Haha yes, I always think that rules don't apply to you if you know why they are there😆 Really excited to see this thing rip!
@@eurobeatmachinist732 Exactly! This is much stronger in so many ways now, but I understand that many of the rules are there for idiots who would ruin the fun for us all. Me too! It's going to be very exciting :D
i guess it took few months for the paint to dry .
wut?
@@Tinker1837 you painted them there were no snow in the background . Only green trees . When they dry there were snow everywhere in the background .
