About the Backyard format:⏳👟
A backyard ultra event is a unique ultramarathon race that typically takes place on a looped course, usually in a backyard or other small, contained space. The race format involves runners completing a loop of a set distance, often a mile or a kilometer, within a certain time limit, usually one hour.
At the end of each loop, runners must be ready to start the next loop again when the clock starts for the next hour. This means the runners must manage their pace and energy levels carefully to ensure they have enough time to complete each loop within the time limit.
The event continues in this format until only one runner remains, or until no runner can complete a full loop within the time limit. This format makes the backyard ultra event unique in that it is not a race against other runners but rather a race against the clock and oneself.

Lazarus Lake's approach to running, endurance, athletics and life is so fantastic. I only just came across the concept of the backyard ultra a few weeks ago when I started to tentatively scope out some nearby trail races. It's such a brilliant idea and this short film does a great job of conveying what can be accomplished just by participating in an event like this. Love it.
Thanks so much for your feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Thanks for watching!!
It's some real life Ted Lasso stuff!!
😊😊😊😊
😊😊 3:18
Have you heard of his Barkley marathon?
The hardest part is going from the chair to the start line, what a life motto
Yeah, it's a good one. Thanks for watching!
actually so true
The hardest part of the race is between your chair and the starting corral. He said it better
Ross Edgley said the hardest part of his swim around Great Britain was the few steps from the bed to the shower to put on the wetsuit, twice a day for nearly every day of the 157 day swim. He would crush this race!
The hardest part is not being in discomfort, it’s leaving your comfort zone. Life lesson.
“The furthest a person’s runs the furthest they’ve run and it’s the same accomplishment no matter how far that is” is a great way of looking at things.
Sure is.
Every now and then the RUclips algorithm delivers gold. This was defiantly one of those moments! Absolutely amazing concept & film!!
Brilliant! Who would have thunk it?🦚Thanks for watching!!
Watched this, next video I clicked was the one day ahead amateur Tour de France. Did y’all do a comment swap or something?
@@johnsmith4204 not as far as i know lol
@@johnsmith4204 I did the opposite but I have watched the Barkley video
Hey Idiots, USE THE SEARCH BAR!! Stop watching what you are told to like a 5 year old.
I misread the title as "mockumentary" expecting a comedy about someone trying to run 100 miles in their tiny backyard in the suburbs. I didnt expect to watch perhaps the greatest mini doc on an amazing event. Thanks for the great vid and congrats to everyone who dnf'd!
Thanks for that. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
It’s not the same distance but, I believe The Running Channel has a video where the one girl runs a marathon in her backyard; and it wasn’t a big backyard.
running 100 miles in their tiny backyard in on Run steep, run high's channel.
I ran a Backyard last november, and this brought some of the trauma back 😄
We had atrocious weather for the first 8 hours, pouring rain sometimes turning into sleet, gusts of wind... Keeping warm wasn't too much of an issue, but the trail turned into a river of mud and stayed that way for the rest of the event.
Had to tap out at 20 laps. I was slightly disappointed to not make it to 24, but I just couldn't keep going, the mud and water had sapped all of my energy. This didn't stop a few mad lads from doing more than 50 laps. The finisher did 58, bonkers.
A few things that may not be obvious if you've never entered one of these events and that I don't think were talked about in the video:
* The time pressure is just unrelenting, minutes at camp go by really fast of course (especially if you don't have a crew), but on the course you're also constantly making sure that you're in the right spot at the right time. On regular ultras you may have to keep time limits in mind, depending on your pace, but you always have freedom in how you manage your effort. There's not a lot of freedom at a Backyard.
* Laps go by slowly at the start, but gradually you tune everything out and you really get into the flow of things. "Start running after this tree trunk. Am I too hot/cold? Walk for the next 5 minutes. What do I need to do at camp before next lap?" etc. It's quite meditative, more so than a regular ultra where the changing landscape provides some mental stimulation.
* The lap distance is actually diabolical. It's easy to run or run+walk 6.7 km / 4.17 miles in less than an hour, so almost everyone can last a while. But it's also practically impossible to fully walk it, so once the exhaustion and pain set in, you really have to grit your teeth and hang on with all your willpower on those sections that you know you *have* to run to make it back in time.
I strongly encourage all runners to enter a Backyard at least once in their lives, it's a very unique experience.
Thanks for watching! Really good insights into a backyard race too. Cheers!!
it's like the pacer test from gym class on a much larger and horrific scale 😂😂
Good insight, thank you. And well done BTW...
I did my first backyard ultra this past December… 1.5 ish miles every 25 min… sounds soooo easy on paper lol I dnf’d at 20ish miles it was so HARD it was like 30 degrees F, windy, pouring rain, muddy, nor did I have all the gear I needed….the volunteers tried so hard to help me get those last few laps but I was DONE lol ps I couldn’t sign up for next year’s race fast enough 🤦🏼♀️
Great feedback, thank you 😊
Laz has the most diabolical mind, but also such an abiding belief in the capability of every individual to surprise themselves. He creates something special with this insane combination ❤
He sure does. Thanks for watching!!
Is this the same guy who created the race around the prison? I can't remember the name unfortunately
@@dominickhadaroo4399 not sure, but he is the same guy who created the Barkley Marathons
@@dominickhadaroo4399 Yep, that's the Barkley Marathons.
@@Havreringar @Aileen Baker thank you I completely forgot the name
Honestly the harder part is all the stopping cause you’d think it’ll help but that’s when the pain begins
True that. Thanks for watching!!
Yep. As a rock climber you can go for hours and hours grinding your skin away against the rock rock but when you stop for a bit and try to push it again you realize you’re burned out and your skin is far more sensitive
Yeah I hate stopping cause then I realize how tired I am. 😂 quite the mental game these runners have to go through.
@@janelbbuck Yep, its a tough mental game. Thanks for watching
I'm doing one in March, this, for me, will be point break!! The running part etc compared to that is easy!! The stopping and starting will kill me off lol
Loved this doc. Well done. Using Lazarus as a narrator over the whole event and his poignant thoughts overlapping significant junctures was perfect.
Thank you. Yeah he's a great narrator. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
Laz hits on a key point to what makes this format so awesome. The regrouping every hour. You get to restart every hour. No worries about getting dropped by a pack.
That last comment he made is amazing. So spot on. As a new runner, I got 2 marathons under my belt and I’m doing a 35 miler in a few weeks. I tell people all the time. You want to find out some shit about yourself go do an endurance event like running a marathon or longer. Anybody can run a marathon, it’ll be harder for some than others. But too many people count themselves out before they even try. That is amazing though, to start an endurance race and not knowing where the finish line is. Beautiful.
Well said. Thanks for watching.
The backyard format is truly unique, pushing runners to their limits. It's not just a race against others, but a race against time and oneself. Huge shoutout to all the amazing trail running legends who participated
Yes, I agree.Thanks for watching!!
6:08 Gary mentions Milner Carden here who was his high school track coach. Milner unfortunately passed away in 2015. On a page with his obituary, Gary had this to say:
"Coach believed in me, and he made me believe in myself. The lessons he taught me have been with me my whole life. Thank you Coach, for everything."
- Gary Cantrell
Touching words that I thought some of you might also find some value in 😢
Thanks for the insights.
It's honestly just so impressive the winner does such a ridiculous amount of km's. Very cool to see people performing such feats of endurance, strength, and mental fortitude.
I'm going to go ahead and say it. Lazarus Lake is a true genius to come up with the concept of the Barkleys and Backyard Marathons that pushes and impacts people on so many levels. All it costs to enter one of his races is every part of your being and soul.
I start watching a lot of running videos. But don’t finish many of them. This film was just wonderful! Start to finish. Now I’m inspired to push my 69 year old (new runner) body to exceed my 10k distance. I’m slow as molasses but aspire to “run like the wind”. Your film helps.
Awesome Bruce. That is so good to hear. Good luck and keep having fun with the running. Thanks for watching!
God speed to you sir
Imagine doing your first BYU and finding yourself in the final two with Sam Harvey. You'd tap out on the spot. Amazing effort from Caleb.
Yeah, he did well. Thanks for watching.
Caleb crushed it!! If I’m left with Harvey we need to camp together so he can convince me to continue
I literally don’t know if I’ve ever seen a running documentary that gave me such inspiration. I want to run this some day. And that beginning ceremony from the Haka’s was absolutely invigorating. That’s how you light a fire.
Awesome!! Thanks!!!
Wow, what a video! Loved hearing Lazarus Lake's thoughts on the dedication required to succeed. Huge shoutout to all the trail running legends who took part in this awesome event. Keep pushing your limits! 🏃♂🔥
Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!
I love the premise. This is such a cool idea. And it brings people together who usually would only ever once see the heels of each other.
True that. Thanks for watching!
Just signed up for my first backyard ultra in Timaru in September, have never run longer than 5km before so 1 lap will be a lifetime achievement.
Go hard! You will have fun. Thanks for watching!
Hope you go well buddy
All the best! Timaru was my old stomping ground. This is the first time I've heard of an event like this.
The maine one?
How did it go?
I have been struggling at a production job that is all about pulling orders for time, and this is a big motivation. Watching people repeatedly get the courage to face the starting line is huge, and the drive to make it one more lap is even bigger. Thanks for the inspiration and the boost to make it work.
Cheers. Thanks for watching. Im glad you enjoyed it!!
A testament to the impact that a great teacher can have...
True that. Thanks for watching.
Bloody awesome!!! "It's good clean fun except... today it's not clean or always fun!!" Wowzaaa what an epic idea, must have to be so mentally strong to keep going. Loved Lazarus narration and the epic adventure music!! Can't wait to share this with my uncle who loves ultra running!! 👍👍👍
Thanks Jasmine. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😊
What a beautifully put together video. Captured this event so well.
Thanks very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Ran my first backyard this year. It was harder than I thought but I learned a bunch and can't wait to try another.
Laz will go down as one of the most interesting and genuine people in this world. Another amazing video!
Cheers Dillon! Thanks for watching!!
Fantastic movie. Love the laid back nature of this event. Lots of smiles, lots of mud and lots of milestones. ❤
Thanks Kat! You up for next year?
What an amazing concept … Love that the competition is from within and the camaraderie of all those taking part, this is such an amazing concept.
I agree! Thanks for watching!!
Hell yeah - I'm 16 & looking to become an ultrarunner in the future. This is a great doco, love the format of a BU and so blessed that ultrarunning is so embedded in NZ's culture. Just great :)))
Awesome Rocky. Thanks for watching!!
This really touched me. Being a runner myself (furthest was marathon distance), I cannot imagine, how much willpower you need to invest, to keep doing "one more lap". Congratulations to everyone who DNF'ed :) and of course to the winner. And thank you for this amazing and very well done film.
Thanks @philipppkowalski1105 I'm so glad you enjoyed the film. Thanks for watching!
This man looks so happy for such a sadistic experience. I absolutely love it.
Thanks for watching!!
I went into my first Backyard Ultra 6 weeks after my first season of XC. I had never run anything more than a 5k before XC and barely even got over 16 miles for my longest run. It did not go anything like I was expecting and I was definitely miserable after all was said and done. But it was the step that really helped me fall in love with running. That was around 7 months ago, I’ve now run my first Marathon and am training for my next season in XC. I have so many aspirations for running, but this concept has to genuinely be one of the things I look forward coming back to the most! So many awesome people I’ve been able to connect with, and pushing myself to new heights I never thought I could go!
Thats great to hear! Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching!
Don’t know how the algorithm found this for me, but very glad it did! Great watch

I spent 3 months backpacking in Utah, in the desert and mountains. 3 straight months. Hiking 6 days of the week. There were so many times we were exhausted mid-hike and would take a break. But we knew not to sit down, because getting back up is the hardest part.
Everyone grows through being mentally defeated, it's not easy growth but you grow.. I felt that
This is f ing awesome. Many words of wisdom in this. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Awesome. Im glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Wow, the Haka at the start gave me goosebumps!
Yeah, it was pretty awesome. Thanks for watching!
This is nuts, and i'm here for it.
Awesome. 👍🏽
So good on so many levels. Every starter won my respect...
That was brilliant, really enjoyable watch. Fair play to all the people who ran it
Oh wow never heard of that back yard running loop good job to all who was in it❤
So that's what Santa does with his off time in the summers!
Really cool race, awesome concept.
Yeah. Thanks for uploading this. Never heard of it. Now I know what the hardest race on earth is. I cried several times, watching it.
Awesome. I'm so glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Super terrific video. I have learned so much from the wisdom of Gary Cantrell, and it was marvelous to watch these runners do their best. Thank you.

This guy is the best sports psychologist (not) in the business. Seriously. A true expert in the human condition.
That Haka in the beginning set me off. I love NZ, wish I could visit one day.
This reminds me of the Barkley Marathons. If you are into this, That documentary is worth watching as well. Hats off to anyone who does ultra marathons.
Well, Laz is the same guy that came up with Barkleys.
This is the Barkley guy. I know you can see that right? It kind of seems confusing but it's literally the same guy who smokes the cigarette to start the race at the Barkley.
@@jakewilliams2728 Sweet!
Really cool event hosted by some people whos mindsets on not just running, but just life and human nature are admirable. Also, a really well put together film. Thanks
Cheers. Thanks for watching!
since i discovered Xoskin toe socks it really changed my feet for the better during long runs. never been the same after. hope Sally can try those one day. massive congrats for the 250 🎖
Imagine if Lazarus and Goggins invented an event! 😧😧
Great documentary! RUclips algorithm serving up a winner!
Yeah that would be something! Thanks for watching!!
Awesome doco and race concept. Thanks for posting. Will definitely need to give this one a crack.
Thanks. Yeah, you should definitely give it a go.
So motivational! Congratulations to everyone who participated!
Fantastic movie! I love the understated way these people do something amazing and look so good doing it even though it must hurt like hell!
Thanks Lil D! Yeah they are inspiring individuals for sure
Already posted. Posting again. Thanks for this
Whenever Lazarus hosts an event, I watch a doc about it.
One of the best videos I've watched. As a beginner runner who is aiming to become an ultramarathoner to prove something to himself, these guys have inspired me to go out and train everyday!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!!
You can go three times your long run so do one long run with lots of walking once a week and one long but faster and shorter one once a week. Use fast pace short runs between. You need sports boost or similar and change your shoes every four hours and have wider shoes for the end. Enjoy!
RUclips blessed me with this little gem right before morning break! Pretty awesome doc 💪🏽
Awesome! That’s great to hear. Thanks for watching.
I just read "The Rise of The Ultrarunners", by Adharanand Finn and got amazed by this extreme sportr. I just dont know if I can do such a thing. Congrats to all those crazy heroes out there!
That was amazing! An incredibly well made documentary, thoroughly enjoyed it. And as someone who has just started running, very motivational. Good stuff!

Good call. Thanks for watching!!
I don't know if Laz is getting more loquacious in older age, or what, but this is the most philosophical I've seen him be (or maybe, the filmmaker to allow him the space to be), and it is amazing. What a wonderful outlook and compassion.
I would love to see Courtney do a Backyard again. She was amazing when she last did one, but she has completely upped her game since then too
