How many miles? Tomorrow I'm looking at an 01 GT with 159k miles for $1000. Should I snag it? His price is negotiable too. This thing is MINT inside and out, and even has the premium chrome wheels!
The trans is known for a few things that can make them fragile depending on use, input shafts twist or snap When you start putting more power down around 300-400, using too sticky tires(lots of grip vs a weaker input shaft equals a wonderful snap) or running wheels over 19" (too much leverage against the input shaft). The diff is known to go out if you do burnouts, especially 1 wheel peel type burnouts. And finally the transmission pump chain and sprockets are known to fail when putting more power down as discussed earlier. There are a few more little things that can be a small problem but not a tranny killer. The clutches are fairly solid stock, but built is always better, if you do end up replacing them, replace them with upgraded clutches and upgraded parts that were discussed earlier. Good luck and drive fast, don't die!

I miss this generation Grand Prix, such a cool looking car and that 3.8 V6 had some guts (even without the supercharger). Would love to see GM bring back Pontiac, with the wedge shape, body molding, swoopy look and all. GM V6 engines were just so satisfying, maybe not the flat quickest off the line, but they never seemed to run out of acceleration, and had a great passing/merging gear. Oh yeah. The 4T65e. My G6 had that. I drove the hell out of it in high school and one day on the way home from school, I stopped at a light then tried to go when it was green... drive was another neutral.
Damn now that got me thinking cause I didn't even pay $1000 for the car so I'm thinking about a replacement transmission I would attempt to install myself
In some areas of the country, it's already too late to snag a cheap clean one. I've been watching the prices steadily rise on Grand Prix's over the last year. Car prices in general are up, but W bodies for the longest time were dirt cheap. You can still find them really cheap, but they usually are clapped out to hell or are non-running. I got lucky in late 2019 when I found my 4 door GTP for $1500 with 112k on the clock. I seriously doubt I could score one like that that cheaply now.
Purchased an 04 GTP Comp G beginning of 2019 with 75k for $3200. Love these cars. This is my third Grand Prix (since 96) and first super charged one. One of GM's many bad decisions was retiring the 3800. I won't touch any of their newer cars. The 3.6 liter V6 that replace the 3800 is problem prone and the LS engines with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) have lifter problems. AND they are already having to replace transmissions in some of the brand new 2021 Silverados. They are a joke now.
I've been looking at prices for these cars, and they seem to have gone up in value. Been seeing nice clean examples with lower miles with asking prices of $5,000 or more. Some reaching the $10k mark. Yes, high mileage cars that have been driven as daily drivers and not maintained the best are still cheap. If you are going to buy one of these and mod it don't buy a cheap one that's been beat on. Even today with some bolt on mods for a relatively cheap budget you can make good power with these cars and no one will expect it.
just saw a super clean pace car going for almost 15k and no one said a word. they're definitely going up in price even it it's the cleanest pace car out there

I have a 2003 Pontiac grand prix gt sedan that i got from my dad just before he passed away and i dint have the money to get it fixed at the moment where could i get a good solid transmission
I bought a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe with 147,000 miles on it back in 2012 December I had to let her go and bring it to the junkyard back in 2018 October of 2018 to be precise the transmission started acting up it needed a lot of work underneath rust. Out of the six years I've owned it I invested $2,900 in repair and the car had 254,000 miles on the odometer when I brought it to the junkyard it still started it's still drove but it started leaking oil really really bad and these things are known to catch on fire so I said that's enough for me I'm getting rid of it too much money to fix it but out of the six years I've owned it it was the best car I've ever had planning on getting another one next year and actually fixing it all up the sooner or later you won't be able to find these cars and the ones that you do find they're going to be all rust buckets so hopefully next year I can find one and halfway decent shape and put some money into it and actually keep it for good.
I was lucky to have found a 98 gtp black on brown, with only 25k miles garage kept one owner. Stock except for tires and battery. Lady in her 70’s had some medical problems.

Ive even seen articles on 6speed swaps! if anybody has any knowledge on reproduction side GTP moldings, please give let me know! thanks!
I had a ‘98 GTP and it had a recall for leaking valve cover gaskets. My friend’s GTP started on fire. I believe that’s where most of the fire issues came from
A buddy in high school got a 93 Bonneville gtp from his mom. He sold it to a friend of mine later on, who sold it to another friend after a few years. He had it for a while and then signed it over me. It was a fun car, even with Fleetwood Mac stuck in the cassette player 😂😂. As for another stimmy check. #FJB #LetsGoBrandon
I'm here in Michigan where they were born and built and they're impossible to find I'm a truck guy but absolutely loved my 99 grand prix gtp with every option available. Heads up display, push button performance shift, you name it. I ate many a mustang for dinner with that car. I'd get on a highway on ramp, look where I wanted to be and in the blink of an eye I was just there.. Between a very short distance on ramp to a off ramp I got it to 120mph with tons of room to spare Love that car and so much regret trading it in for a 08 Malibu cause 8t blew the head gasket instead of paying to get the gaskets replaced.would have been a much better choice..live and learn I guess..just another of many regrets
I hear in upper Mid West they are popular tuner cars so it's probably why they are hard to find. People down in Pa and even lower don't know what they are so they tend to sit on marketplace and go lower and lower in price. Got my comp g for less than 3k. Even with simple bolt ons it was faster than my previous stage 2 wrx.

The valve cover gaskets are a 30 min job and don’t put the wire guides back on that’s what actually made them catch on fire I’ve owned about 12 3800 cars n/a and supercharged so far only had one head gasket failure and spun a rod bearing on my swapped car, a 91 regal gs coupe but I’m about to have it on the road again. did you say 400 horse for around $1000? I'm sorry but that's not happening unless you diy a turbo kit onto these engines. The mod list you described is a recipe for maybe 270 whp. Most ppl need some rockers or a cam to make it to 300 whp. 400 hp on an M90 set up is nigh on a max effort m90 set up. I have this engine + m90 in my bird. Tons of torque, but it's a lil disappointing in the hp department. Although turbos really wake these engines up. Like ppl regularly make over 500-600 whp with a turbo.
My 02 GTP coupe I bought it running and driving with no major issues for $2100 canadian with 212,000km on it. Thing moves pretty good. Just fuck working on it sucks, doing the waterpump pissed me off.
same supercharged v6 as in my mom's 1997 Buick Riviera, even stock every time I borrow that car I can embarrass the local Subaru tuners at every stop light!
Everytime I look at cars on fb the cheap ones are too far away. Also I use to have a black impala 3800 use to break down all the time. I liked it but reliability wasn't high.
I'm having this same issue. Crashed my first one about a month ago, trying to get another on FB. All the ones I could buy outright are way far out, while people in Atlanta with one of these with even 200k+ miles want $2500 - $3000 for cars that shouldn't cost more than $2k at most in good condition. I'm just biding my time so I can get into another 6th gen GP for $1500 or less.

I'm only here to share a video concerning Grand Prix Mods. I'm attempting to get a friend that I sold my 92 and 97 SHOs to sell the 92 and buy one of these. Concerning Politics.. Never paid much attention to them until a Pro Wrestling Reality TV Actor was elected President. I was too busy putting myself through college, minus loans/grants while paying for 100% of everything on my way to getting a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology. Shrugs Cars are literally a waste of money
I have one for sale!! Just had transmission rebuild but the the cam when flat! Engine is good! Blower is good! Asking 2000 or best offer!!! It's a1999.
I had the 99 special edition and it was fun to drive. Suspension needed work. Too soft for me. The steering rack is frikkin expensive to replace. It’s a variable ratio rack. Only for this car. My trans went at 100km.
The biggest issues I've had with all 3 of my 6th Gen Grand Prix's has been rust and plastic body panels coming off. There's a drain from the trunk that ends at the rockers, and in winter this becomes a trap for salty-brine water and snow. As for the plastic trim panels, that's just fucking annoying. I hated having to scrape the old adhesive off to put them back on. Whoever designed them was a c*nt. At any rate, my 40th Ann runs like an unleashed beast after putting in a competition transmission. (I don't race, I just never wanted to replace it again... like ever.)
Has anybody ever tried to slap the supercharger of a grand prix into a grand am? I wanna try it, but I can't find any forums or people's whom may have tried it before me. Thanks if you respond

Damn now that got me thinking cause I didn't even pay $1000 for the car so I'm thinking about a replacement transmission I would attempt to install myself
What a feeling! I had a grand Prix gt and my friends used to love to borrow it
my wife had a 2000 GTP - it was fun to drive
I seriously miss my 97 purple grand prix gtp. I'm gonna have to find another 2dr
About damn time! Hopefully we get some more aftermarket support!
That’s why you get a commodore
i got an offer for one with 86k miles 1998 for 600 bucks, it needs tires. I should probably buy it huh
@@vic6972(in Bernie Mac voice) Immejadly!
I just bought one for $800 cash
I've been looking at prices for these cars, and they seem to have gone up in value. Been seeing nice clean examples with lower miles with asking prices of $5,000 or more. Some reaching the $10k mark.
Yes, high mileage cars that have been driven as daily drivers and not maintained the best are still cheap. If you are going to buy one of these and mod it don't buy a cheap one that's been beat on.
Even today with some bolt on mods for a relatively cheap budget you can make good power with these cars and no one will expect it.
just saw a super clean pace car going for almost 15k and no one said a word. they're definitely going up in price even it it's the cleanest pace car out there
@@prestonboling1427 That was 6 months ago when I wrote that. Prices are still increasing on these cars. Starting to wonder what I get for my 2000 GTP with a 3.4 pulley with supporting mods and a proper tune.
I just found a 60,000 MI clean 01 GTP and I paid five grand
@@jplperformance9073 That's what I paid for mine 10+ years ago with similar mileage from Florida and that included shipping costs. Congrats on the purchase. Any mod plans for your GTP?
@@cub1009 Less, people only pay big for unmodified cars like this, always.
My GTP is still my baby. Had a GTP Daytona 500 since 2017
I own 4 of them currently, amazing cars
Lol I have a 98 and 2000 Daytonas and 3 02 gts
2yrs later, FB market sellers think they have Barrett Jackson pieces & want over $4,500 & up. “No low ballers, I know what I got!” “I know a guy who knows a guy, who I don’t know got like $10k!” Damn jerk offs.
I only had an SE, but god damn did I love that car.
Sweet holy turd!! Finally a before you buy video!! Thank you!,i enjoy the Vic videos but these videos are the reason I subscribed!.
I was lucky to have found a 98 gtp black on brown, with only 25k miles garage kept one owner. Stock except for tires and battery. Lady in her 70’s had some medical problems.
Giving Pontiac some love, I like it. I’ve converted so many people to Pontiac lol
I still have my 2000 2 dr gtp. Only 320 hp and it beat my grand prix gxp . The gxp blew the second trans so I installed the gxp interior, wheels, suspension, and strut tower braces and junked my gxp.
Joe is last person thats finna help us but I LOVE Pontiacs especially the GTP and the Firebird T/A
I have 06 Grand Prix Gt I just got a month or so ago. Great cars in my opinion.
How many miles do you have on your 06 Grand Prix GT now? Is it running OK?
@@richardharris3423 192k on it now!! Runs great!! I have a short video on my page if you click on it!! No leaks or any dash lights... I love my prix!!
Yo conseguí un gtp 99 por 15 mil pesos mexicanos y no me arrepiento de ello
Vavle cover gasket Was not the problem it was the Vavle covers themself they cased them WRONG... thats why the recall replaces the orginal grey with new black valve cover with the correct casing your welcome
And The dealer said remove that plastic cover on the engine bc it over heats the engine
One correction,, The Century [97-05] got the 3.1 V6 , regal, Ninety eight, Eighty-eight, Bonneville Lesabre Parkave Riveria V6Camaro V6 Firebird ALL got the 3800. They're amongst the most bulletproof engines.
so a century transmission wouldn’t work?
@@cromulationcould work but they're not built for supercharged engines
Parts are easly to get, whats hard is the freaking side plastic moldings which are discontinued. GM as usual never thinks to remedy this, this car has mega potential. Ive even seen articles on 6speed swaps! if anybody has any knowledge on reproduction side GTP moldings, please give let me know! thanks!
Any luck finding the side molding?
They were mustang killers for the time, I know I had a 97 gtp 2dr. Not beating 5.0 coyote's with these now though.
Bullshit I have a 07 made a 2017 mustang skip a gear
@@brandonthompson6449 Tye 07 had the 5.3 right?
Easy power but the transmission can't handle it. Mine is very lightly modified and the trans went at 120k. Runs great now after $2k rebuild
Love the review
I, thankfully, found mine for $800. Had to replace the entire suspension, but it was more than worth it.
I used to work at a salvage yard. Seen a lot of these 3.8s come in on fire 😅😅 still kinda want one though
I had a ‘98 GTP and it had a recall for leaking valve cover gaskets. My friend’s GTP started on fire. I believe that’s where most of the fire issues came from
@@Westleyr127 not only very possible but also, more than likely
That intro was fire 🔥😂no you are not hallucinating and there is no need to adjust your screens😭
I bought a 2000 GTP last year from an old fella
I love the car - I doubt race it though
I'm here in Michigan where they were born and built and they're impossible to find
I'm a truck guy but absolutely loved my 99 grand prix gtp with every option available. Heads up display, push button performance shift, you name it. I ate many a mustang for dinner with that car. I'd get on a highway on ramp, look where I wanted to be and in the blink of an eye I was just there..
Between a very short distance on ramp to a off ramp I got it to 120mph with tons of room to spare
Love that car and so much regret trading it in for a 08 Malibu cause 8t blew the head gasket instead of paying to get the gaskets replaced.would have been a much better choice..live and learn I guess..just another of many regrets
@@Llggd yes home of Detroit motor city. I can open the door of my Chevy, Ford,Chrysler /Dodge and the sticker in the door will tell me what Michigan town it was assembled in... my gtp was made in port Huron if I remember right...., pretty much all American vehicles are made in the motor state
.
got a 99 GTP w/ 3.4, 60s, PP LIM, PP Gen 3 Blower, e85.... She gets down. scooped her for $500 w/ blown brake lines
I like the 4 door and the hood scoop with a ls4 swap
Just picked up a 1 owner perfect interior garage kept 99 for $2600 then literally seen this 😂
The valve cover gaskets are a 30 min job and don’t put the wire guides back on that’s what actually made them catch on fire
I’ve owned about 12 3800 cars n/a and supercharged so far only had one head gasket failure and spun a rod bearing on my swapped car, a 91 regal gs coupe but I’m about to have it on the road again. Also have a 98 gtp sedan
The dealership does the service for free I have no idea why you'd bother doing the valve covers yourself lmao
@@YeetxBoi I painted mine along with supercharger and some other parts
did you say 400 horse for around $1000? I'm sorry but that's not happening unless you diy a turbo kit onto these engines. The mod list you described is a recipe for maybe 270 whp. Most ppl need some rockers or a cam to make it to 300 whp. 400 hp on an M90 set up is nigh on a max effort m90 set up.
I have this engine + m90 in my bird. Tons of torque, but it's a lil disappointing in the hp department. Although turbos really wake these engines up. Like ppl regularly make over 500-600 whp with a turbo.
I need help finding these. The ones I see are expensive. I'm also tryna find the non charged monte carlo ss.
Same. I am looking for another myself in Atlanta. It seems to further out you go, the better the prices are.
Plastic lower intake gaskets. Cause coolant leaks and vacuum leaks. Dont let em burn your car down. Swap em.
Awesome Tnx. Aces. 05 LeSabre ain’t bad either!
My 02 GTP coupe I bought it running and driving with no major issues for $2100 canadian with 212,000km on it. Thing moves pretty good. Just fuck working on it sucks, doing the waterpump pissed me off.
Had a 01gtp loved it got t bone at a light
My 99 GSE will blow 2021s chevy turbos etc right outta the way to this day.
same supercharged v6 as in my mom's 1997 Buick Riviera, even stock every time I borrow that car I can embarrass the local Subaru tuners at every stop light!
i love this video bro thank you
Sad day. My mom just gave me her 2000. Shes had it since 2003. Unfortunately its only a GT, so no cool supercharger for me.
Still add tune lol k and n drop in and down pipe
Everytime I look at cars on fb the cheap ones are too far away. Also I use to have a black impala 3800 use to break down all the time. I liked it but reliability wasn't high.
I'm having this same issue. Crashed my first one about a month ago, trying to get another on FB.
All the ones I could buy outright are way far out, while people in Atlanta with one of these with even 200k+ miles want $2500 - $3000 for cars that shouldn't cost more than $2k at most in good condition. I'm just biding my time so I can get into another 6th gen GP for $1500 or less.
Same with our 2001 Grand Prix GT Sedan.
Usually if you put the shift kit in the transmission from zzp it seemed to prolong the life of that glass transmission
my dad used to have one of these. when i was 4 i thought that shit was the fastest thing in the world😂unfortunately it got totaled maybe 5-6 years ago. it’s forever in my memory
Yea long time ago years ago on 166 in Atlanta I was trying to make my trans am pull away from one and slow down and pull away from it I slowed down one time well maybe two next thing I know it was on my bumper and I couldn't shake it. 😮 Really? It was chipped I know I asked him. My car was 2000 ws6 on top of that
I had one leak oil onto the exhaust. Luckily, the time it leaked, i was already pulled over looking at something else😂
Hey I’m trying to get my hands on a Bonneville SSE-i
Are 2000 pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr and 2 Dr the same size? I can’t find the size difference anywhere!!!🤷♂️
Shrugs
Cars are literally a waste of money
Thinking about getting a Pontiac for a project car, my first one, if anyone has any advice for any project car it would be much appreciated
I have one for sale!! Just had transmission rebuild but the the cam when flat! Engine is good! Blower is good! Asking 2000 or best offer!!! It's a1999.
Real shit quality video
good job
ehhhh Thanks?
I sure miss that supercharger whine.
What is done to the car at 0:04 to make it sound like that
I had the 99 special edition and it was fun to drive.
(I don't race, I just never wanted to replace it again... like ever.)
What trans are you running?
Can you get this car in a manual
i love this car both of my 2 older sisters a one it was so much fun
When I get my hands on one I will convert it to rear wheel drive and but a v8 in it
I have a 1999 grand Prix supercharger gtp and I fix the tail but water still gets in my trunk
Has anybody ever tried to slap the supercharger of a grand prix into a grand am? I wanna try it, but I can't find any forums or people's whom may have tried it before me. Thanks if you respond
First 10 secs in I think you got me sold
