Dave should ABSOLUTELY make an app where he yells at people if they overspend in a budget category!!!
Amen!
THIS IS INSANITY! YOU DONT GET TO SEE THE INSIDE OF A RESTAURANT UNLESS YOU WORK IN ONE!
It's called everydaverant
dave since I been on a budget I dont see the inside of the restaurant for a long time. I go to drive thru now.
Amen. They should have a Dave Ramsey bobblehead with his voice saying his phrases!!!
Tell your money where to go instead of wondering where it went
izoneoutzi1 frickin epic
John Maxwell
Love this!!!
izoneoutzi1 THAT is good advice right there
So simple yet so hard for some people 🙄
Budgeting, just like staying healthy, is a lifestyle choice more than anything.
Budgeting saved my life! I constantly was saying “where did my money go?” And now I know where every cent goes
I go crazy if I lose track of even a penny. It usually ends in me backtracking through our statements until I find it. It's usually a typo when I enter expenses in our spreadsheet 🤦🏻♂️
Budgetting is all discipline. Without discipline every system will fail!
I kinda disagree. Budgeting is putting round pegs in round holes, and square pegs in square holes. What requires discipline is *deciding to sit down* and put the round pegs in round holes, and square pegs in square holes, and *stopping* when all the round holes are filled with round pegs and the square holes are filled with square pegs.
But discipline is boring.... :-D
80% behavior. 20% knowledge
Discipline equals freedom.
I've learned more from dave ramsey than my ENTIRE 12 years in school... 😎🙌🏽💯
Because school really isn’t for learning.
Budgeting is nothing more than #1 putting round pegs in round holes and square pegs in square holes (which you learned as a toddler), and #2 arithmetic and subtraction (which you learned in second grade).
RonJohn63 still 1/3 of population does not do it for whatever reason. Its dumb do as it saves me 10% of my paycheck by directing money where it should go to. Instead of regretting later.
@@MrZwartwit *not doing* something you know (or can trivially figure out) how to do and *not knowing how* to do something are completely different Someone as smart as you should know that.
honestly yeah, the school system needs to be changed. right now its the same system as it was in the early 1900s, built to make factory workers who follow expectations well.
Budgeting is hard. Especially if you've never budgeted anything before. But man... once you get the hang of it, it makes a huge difference when you're on the debt free journey.
I’ve luckily never had debt before, but man I can’t imagine going back to a life where I’m not budgeting. I’d feel so nervous not knowing where my money is going.
Agreed. Its a way to teach us how to self discipline with money
OMG...food is so easy to overspend on! When you see it in writing...it's a wakeup call!
I’ve been budgeting for months and it has totally saved me financially. A lot of people budget monthly, but since I get paid weekly I always budget on a weekly basis, which is awesome because I can track my expenses and spending more often. I personally love budgeting with pen and paper. I’m not a big fan of apps honestly. I just love writing things down and making notes to myself.
I like writing mine out as well
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I have an alternative plan for people who think following a budget is "too restrictive". I call it a guilt based budget. Live like you normally would for a month, but whenever you spend money on something you write down the amount and what it was for. Then at the end of the month you go through the list of what you spent and categorize it, and if you went over your income for that month you have to explain to yourself why each purchase was necessary and worth going into debt for. Works even better if you do it with a spouse/partner and explain to them.
This simple principle of telling EVERY DOLLAR where to go before i started spending was life changing for me! Accounting for every dollar...thanks Dave. You have truly been a blessing in my life
Did a budget for the first time this month. I was off on groceries and haircuts. Next month, I made the adjustment
Budgeting isn't hard. It's basic arithmetic.
Living to it is the hard part. It's the part that involves compromise, saying no to unplanned entertainment, emotional pressure to spend.
This is why I set myself up with a need want list...... My basic rule is I can't get something on my want list until all my needs have been met..... Needs include food, transportation and maintenance and clothing when necessary...... There are a few other things as well, but that's how I operate..... If my needs aren't met, I can't get what I want...... I don't deny myself, but I get smart with my money to make sure I'm not going to be struggling...... Most of my friends don't understand this though..... Their thought process is I need this shiny new thing and I need it now, but then they're going without some of their basic needs
I think understanding that you will be bad at it at first but that you will improve is important to understand and accept. Too often people do bad once and give up.
Even those who are good at budgeting fall off the wagon occasionally. A splurge once in a while is ok as long as you get back on schedule afterwards.
I love budgeting :) My husband and I have a big budget committee meeting at the beginning of the month and then have a quick meeting (usually 5 minutes or so) every Sunday after that just to touch base.
Then of course, I run numbers a few times per week because I’m obsessed 😂
Anna Lesher oh gosh, me too! I'm constantly checking and re-checking my numbers!
Anna I do the same thing 🤦♀️🤦♀️ I'm obsessed with my budget.
Obsession is one key to success
Me too! I obsess about the numbers a lot.
Me too!
Hahaha I laughed out loud when he said you're going to spend more on food. This is the first month I'm on EveryDollar and I'm scratching my head because even with frugal shopping I was way off. Lolol I'll keep trying
Marlyn Santos After 10+ years of consistent budgeting, I can tell you to within $50 what I actually spend on food in a month. I sometimes go a few dollars over, sometimes a few under (a few = >$20), but roughly I hang out around $700 a month. But if I were able to increase that to $800, I’d spend $800. So basically I spend what I budget. I could probably save $100 if I shopped a bit more frugally, but why? We can afford $700 a month for 5. I should mention I get most of my produce at a produce store that has really good prices! I menu plan every week and shop to the menu. All this makes a difference.
Budgeting might not be complicated, but for some people getting control of their money IS that hard! For everybody that saw the light in January, stick with it! Feels great on the other side.
benwhitnell
Don't see the big deal.
My entire household budget is in my head.
I keep things simple.
What kicks in is how their family spent their money. Which might be to spend it all, and then use the credit card when you don't have the funds.
BlackWorldTraveler well the data suggests that your anecdote is just an anecdote. I don’t see how some people can’t differentiate between personal experience and demographic data, but here we are all the same.
benwhitnell
It's my own personal experiences that made me wealthy and retiring next year 15 years early not data.
Don't even care about the data.
Just keeping things simple and use common sense.
BlackWorldTraveler we’re all very impressed. Both the first and second statements stand.
Budgeting is SIMPLE! having the discipline to stick to a budget is the hard part. Some people aren't willing to sacrifice. They feel entitled to a new car, a $1k phone, a 4000 square foot house, etc. Ya can't fix stupid.
I declared war on my debt. Just our mortgage left. Dave’s plan works. Start today. If I can do it so can you!!
I started budgeting with my wife a few months ago and I liked the results (thank you free spreadsheet program). But we were still using the debit card for all purchases and felt like the money was still not being properly accounted for. Now we use cash and envelopes instead and it works a lot better. And for the first time in over a decade I am able to put money aside in savings. Too bad Dave isn't running for president, because maybe then the congressional budget would be balanced and America would be debt free in 6 months.
This man has been a blessing to my finances. God bless you Dave!
I love the navigation analogy. ***Rerouting***
I struggled to do a budget where every penny was set out as I felt it was too restrictive, instead, I tracked my spending for 3 months then gave myself a weekly budget the I knew was livable. With this system I can save 60% of my income but still feel can do what I enjoy, if I spend too much one week I just know I have to cut back the next.
Pretty much the same thing I do. It's simple at it works.
You have found a way to manage your finances that works for YOU and that's the most important thing. Keep it uo .
When we put together our budget and we KNEW we had all our essentials covered, we dumped the rest into a "gift fund" or "restaurants" as both of those are extras and not necessities.
I am 87 years old and I have always had a budget. Today I have 15000 in the bank and 14000 in savings and no debt
No ,you just have to be disciplined and stick to your game plan !
Go out of bounds and you hear Dave say “That was STUPID!!”
My budget for 2019. My monthly income is 2,300. $750 is left aside for rent, insurance, groceries, taxes (which is next to zero), and car gas and repairs saving. $550 into emergency funds (which is hold in a 2+% saving account). $900 dollars into Roth IRA account. $100 is for me to make free choices. I'm trying to save that up so I could get a bike.
Tien Doan $750 is divided into rent, insurance, groceries and gas? How much is your monthly rent? That’s crazy !
Tien Doan what’s your food allowance?
Joey Alvarez probably lives with family 🤔
It’s not allowed to invest more than $6000 a year or $500/month in a Roth. How are you investing $900 a month?
I love my every dollar app!! I found it to be fun to enter info and really see what I am doing! My husband and I race to see who enter what and hold each other accountable!! We look at money differently now!!
I wrote weight loss goals down and now I’m excited to write down savings goals and a budget. Thank you for the motivation!
Plan your work and work your plan.
It’s sometimes difficult to stick to it but not impossible.
Dave Ramsey GPS: "In $450, make a student loan payment!"
Kyle's Big Pig ha! 👍
Hahaha niceee. That's so appropriate.
I love your advice.
+1 for Dave yelling at me through the Every Dollar app when I overspend my budget in the next update.
So funny! I was editing my food spend on my spreadsheet as you mentioned over estimating this area! Working towards saving 50% of my net income... made it to 43.4% so far! Thanks for the advice mate! Hi from the UK.
Your app is amazing, i preach and recommend it to friends all the time. I used to keep a rinky dink excel spreadsheet and still saved, but your app is much more helpful, especially with preplanning, category breakdowns, and creating funds.
When will the Every dollar app be available outside Canada/US?
Dave Ramsey audio: stop spending too much money stupid! 😂
I need to be added to that data point. I was able to get my family out of debit completely by myself! That might explain why I am divorced now. My exwife completely refused to even discuss it and it always resulted in an argument. Even after counseling, nothing helped. You can't help those that do not recognize they have a problem.Well, you already know how that ended. I will dedicate the rest of my days to making sure my daughter learns about financial responsibility so she doesn't follow in her mother's footsteps.
I had one of those and she's been gone 8 years. I don't miss being married and never want another. I'm less than 60 days from debt freedom and it's a wonderful feeling! I can survive just fine on $1000 mo, which is 28% of my net retirement income. She's on her 4th marriage now and I'd bet money that they don't have two coins to rub together!
What a great mentor/teacher! Thank you Dave!
Have to be consistent!!! Stop making excuses!! Stop being in denial!!! Say NO to anybody who asks for money. Say NO to everything that is not in your list
The majority of folks can't say "No" to themselves!
I need to rework my budget also. But this time, I am also going to print out a monthly calendar so I know what I am spending on each day. And if something comes up and its not on the calendar for that day, its an easy "no".
I don’t have any written or budget applications. I simply set a weekly amount to reserve. In addition, I either stash or invest all windfalls such as bonuses, and tax returns. 🏛📊
We live in a reactive society instead of proactive. Budgeting is being proactive and working your money BEFORE you get into trouble (debt!)
With all the tools, software, etc available today there really is no excuse for not keeping a budget. There are tools like Mint which does a decent job of tracking your spending.
It’s really that hard for people who haven’t truly decided they want their financial lives to be better
‘It forces you to live on purpose’ love that....
I don't make enough for the budget I need haha.
I love the envelope system. I feel so free and sooo much less stress when I budget and use the envelope system. I know exactly how much I can spend and I'm in control. I love it.
I budget on a monthly basis. Just a Word document with the name/date/amount of each expense and, after paying it, I highlight the row in green to know it's been handled for the time being. When I look at that column of text and it glows green back at me, I definitely get a little endorphin buzz 😎
Family is skinny and hungry 😂
Well maybe that's the key to weightloss! Lol
Val 😂😂😂🤣
You are amazing man! Thank you so much for sharing! 🤘🔥❤
At 3:58 I love the idea. I could hear Dave now. I should just imagine it when I go over budget in a category. Lol
LoL, I want Dave to yell at me on EveryDollar haha.
My fiancee and I made our budget, listed our debts, and with today's paycheck are beginning our debt snowball. I paid off my phone and she paid off a medical bill. We're going to do this! 💪🏼
it takes many months to get the budget down...but once you do it feels good
The Dave Ramsey audio guidance on the app!!! Yassss!🤣
Thanks Dave! I know some people are against you or anti budgeting. I use to not budget and wonder where my money went and get fees then I took your advice a month ago and tried it. Now after I tried it now I'm less worried about money and stashing hundreds of cash into my savings instead of a small $15/week and getting bossy with my money and showing it who's boss. Now I can't wait until the next budgeting meeting to see how much I can save or have available for things that I might need and know if I could or couldn't afford.
I love the "Turn around" audio idea.... but change it to "Rebudgeting" instead of "Recalculating"... LOL
Budgeting and sticking with it. I can write it out all I want and that's good record keeping but staying with in the boundaries of it is even harder because it must be put into practice.
By golly, he's right about the food. I've been tracking my spending for years now and I still remember the total shock about my grocery spending..if you pay with cards, you really have no idea, trust me!
I've paid for groceries with credit cards for 20 years now and it's not that hard to keep track. I have a monthly spreadsheet that I use to keep track of all expenses bills, gasoline, groceries, and I enter in the amounts every time I spend any money on any of them. last year our average monthly grocery expenses came out to be $740 a month. Last month we spent $591.17 on groceries. Plus with my card I get 2% cash back on groceries and 3% cash back on gasoline. every two years I get a free month of gas and groceries from my points
Can't argue with that Ryan! I guess Dave would say that you're still "playing with snakes". The temptations with credit cards (to purchase stuff and not pay the balance in time) are for many people just not worth the points or convenience, is what I think he means.
@@flowergrowersmith449 yeah, my mind works completely different from most people. Being a civil engineer my mind has a very mathematical approach to everything. Whenever I have cash in hand I consider that money already out of the bank and it's not going back in, so I will blow it much faster. When I use a credit card I consider that purchase as building up a monthly bill that I have to pay so I'm less likely to spend because that money isn't "gone" yet, but I have to pay for it. The numbers on a computer screen for my bank account have a bigger impact on me then a piece of green paper in my hand.
I wonder when there will be an EveryCurrency app for those who live outside the US.
There are so many similar apps to use. I've been using Money Manager and I love it.
Robson Botelho Dave’s app has different currencies. I’m in South Africa, I use it.
@@ChooseU4ever Does it mean we need to save R14 000 in emergency fund in South Africa
@@murielmushariwa4051 Hi Muriel I don't do the conversion. I saved R10k for my baby step 1. Then for a fully-funded emergency fund, I saved 8 months of my monthly expenses
Is there a UK version available? Your app isn't available in the UK.
I wouldn’t mind hearing your voice on my shoulder telling me not to buy that haha
Best thing I’ve EVER done and I actually enjoy doing it
Yes to Dave’s voice on every dollar 🙌🏻😆 “THAT’S STUPID!!”
So true with the budget for food. I was in shock how much we were spending on groceries each month and fast food!!!
When simple addition and subtraction is too difficult...
I find that when I help people budget it takes roughly 3 months to get it right. It's a complete change for most people and many people dont know what they spend.
How come we can’t get the every dollar app in the U.K.
Or Canada?
Because you're not f*cking Americans DEAL WITH IT . Lol JK
@@MikeMike-yc8gg Why does a person need an "app"? Pencil and paper works just as well!
Budgeting can be hard but I help other teachers on small incomes live a fulfilling life.
Dave Ramsey for president! Campaign slogan: "Deficits are Stupid. Get America Out of Debt!"
I've kept a monthly budget spreadsheet for 30 years but only recently have started weaning myself off using a credit card for day to day spending. This has really ramped up my self awareness of where my money is going
I have been keeping a budget for over 10+ years and it’s the BEST thing ever. I don’t do the Dave Ramsey way by assigning every dollar to a place.
I do the opposite whereas every dollar I spend I write it down or in my case I have a spending app that I enter into.
Same thing but a variation of the Dave Ramsey method. At the end of the day I know where my MONEY 💰 EVERY MONTH !!!
I started drinking water only, I'm quiting fast food, soda, chips, too much chocolate. I'm done. I finally faced the music, (my monthly spending habits), and it shocked me to my core. Goalwise, I only feel the need to purchase a vehicle and a house. After that, I hope to continue to live the way I really want to.
When he said I was wrong about my grocery budget 😭 I feel attacked lol
ANTOINETTE ELEAN same 😂
It’s because your not used to being told what’s right from wrong
Dave cracks me up!
I will be starting budgeting from september 2019 onwards.
Have been listening to your awesome materials for a few month now.
I have always been a saver, and manage to save roughly 20% of my take home.income
Hopefully, witj budgeting, i can push up.that amount to 30% and put thr extra 10% into retirement saving.
Thank you for this awesome videos Dave.
Since I started this we’ve been saving about £1500 per month, and we’re not even on rice and beans….
Without a budget, even spending one dollar is stressful! I went to Denver and spent $300. I came back feeling like a failure. I am documenting my journey out of debt on my RUclips channel and that's part of the process, learning how to budget!
Omg I want that Dave sound byte talking to me when I overspend
Food is the biggest in my house! Plus coupons for paper n plastic, i have that app so now i know it is from you👏
It’s good to know that the budget is not supposed to be set on stone 🥴 that’s why I never did a budget before -it never worked out as written . Ive been budgeting for 1 1/2 months and I have to readjust my budget daily but I’m letting myself reap the consequences of not sticking to my budget instead of getting a lifeline from the credit card. The thing I’m doing wrong is not having a detailed documentation of where I ultimately spend each dollar after shifting the budget around. I will start doing that going forward to arrive at a better prediction of how much money to allocate to each category in the future= less reworking of the budget
I started your plan 15 years ago with the CD's and book. If you stick with it you will have enough money to invest in reality or whatever 😎
I still use maps... along with my GPS. I have this weird thing where I need to picture where I AM on the map of the U.S. 😐 in case my GPS fails.
I feel enlightened now that I know what a map is
Mine is very low maintenance, my money goes in my account, I have other accounts for emergency, saving, bills etc which auto transactions occur. So I have a set amount each week for groceries etc. At the end of the month i check over all my spending and look at the comparison of the my budgeted spend vs actual spend for that previous month
PAPA DAVE! You changed my life. I’m crushing it already after a month and a half
Budget committee meetings, haha love it.
Budget restricting? I actually noticed I had more money to work with than I thought after I eliminated all the fluff I spent money on.
🤣 your laugh though HaHaHA, I’m on light duty and my budget is air TIGHT best part my 12 year old understands 👏🏽and honestly I’m loving it but I’m Not🥴 I like it because of discipline
You were spot on on the food bill.
Good insight!
I've actually just posted a video on budgeting to my channel yesterday
Are you going to make the Every Dollar app available in Australia?
Hey Dave, I live in the UK, the everydollar app and website aren’t available here, is there anything you can do to expand coverage so that your neighbours here can benefit also please? Thanks for all your advice, you’re helping me adjust
We don’t even use pay phones or yellow books anymore to find these places we just use are conviently handy smartphones
Great content...
It takes around 90 days to get the "rhythm" of your budget, per Dave. It's true! Then, once you're there, it's sort of addicting. I'm debt free and I still budget down to the penny with every paycheck. You got this!
I have my monthly expenses laid out but since I’m self employed/full commission/unpredictable income…I have to figure out how to make it work!
Every Dollar app...downloading it now!
