- OPD supports everyone's right to be who they are. Meet Lieutenant Jim Young. Orlando Police Chief John Mina appointed Lt. Young as the agency’s LGBT Police/Community Liaison. OPD Is proud to contribute to the It Gets Better Project.
In his It Gets Better video, Lt. Young shares the contrast between his experience being an openly gay officer in the Orlando Police Department against his time in the Air Force even before Don't Ask Don't Tell where he recalls gay people routinely being fired once their sexuality was discovered.
After retiring to a private business for several years, Lt. Young revisited his dreams of being a police officer. However, even after being a vital presence on the force in line for a promotion, Lt. Young discovered they were not accepting of gay officers. Disheartened, he knew it was time to move on. At that point, he moved to Orlando, where he found a very accepting community, and within a few years he was able to openly live his truth.
"Well, great," other officers would tell Lt. Young when he shared he was gay. "You're a great officer."
"It's really heartfelt to know that life gets better," he says. "It gets better."
