- In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Judement Day by Van Halen. This is a really cool song that is track #2 from the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. It was Sammy Haga's third album with the band and was probably one of Eddie's most prolific time periods as a writer, partly due to his new 5150 amplifier as well as the Ernie Ball Music Man guitars that he used during the making of the album. Eddie was truly inspired by his Music Man and 5150 amps, and the album featured a lot of new tones and sonic dimensions for Eddie. On Judgement day, Eddie employs the next pickup as well as uses the bridge and middle position during the solo. He also does a two handed tapping technique that was only seen live during extended versions of eruption on previous tours. Judgement day was a fan favorite during the live set and even found it's way into the set for the Best Of All Worlds tour with Sammy Hagar and Joes Satriani on guitar. I do my best to replicate the majority of the parts of this song and give you a solid understanding of how to play it and learn some of Eddie's techniques. I hope you enjoy the lesson. Right on Marty! I learned this song by ear back in 1992. Used to play it with a trio back in the day. It's said that this song was recorded with the Kramer 5150 Guitar.
Hey man! You know that's interesting. I can see that for the rhythm but that solo is totally EBMM! 😎🤟🏻
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker I've seen photos of him behind the console playing the Kramer 5150 during Carnal Knowledge sessions. Mike is playing too.
That's it!!!! You've matched the best tone on the web and in history! 🥇 That's an absolutely killer tone, and a dream guitar! Wow! For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in my opinion is the pinnacle of Ed's tone. Just my opinion. I've heard that this track Judgment Day was the track being recorded when the Kramer 5150 guitar got it's headstock broken? Then onto the Music Man guitar. 🎸
Wow very interesting. I need to research that!!! Thanks so much dude !! 😎🤟🏻
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker 🎸👍🏻
I love Ed's '90s full on wet dry wet tone 🎸 👑
💯 %
You crack me up. Now we're doing this, now this and now this. All with one chord. You're the best. I love your teaching.
Hell yeah Marty; always great to get a Van Halen lesson....keep em coming please!!!
In my opinion the BEST rock album in history!!
I don’t know why Sammy didn’t call you for the tour👍🏻
Hey, this was actually the last song Eddie used the 5150 Kramer on so he definately did not use the 'middle position" on the solo since the guitar only has 1 pickup. He used Soldanos on the album, the 5150s weren't really ready until the tour
Some folks said he used it on this tune and it broke and he also used the EBMM? You can hear the EBMM pickups on the lead so it confuses me. Maybe the 5150 is the rhythm?
Love the composition and attitude of Judgement Day. Dirty Water Dog got that attitude too. Catherine is off the charts angry! Loved it all man. Ed was amazing... I love that you break this stuff down for us Marty. Thank you for all you do!
Great break down of a great VH song, great riff. Eddie was the King of great riffs. "I'll give it my best college try"😁You do it better than me. I, like every Eddie nutter learned the tapping part verbatim before even trying any other part... It's not easy, but Eddie is the King for a reason...
I watched this video four hours ago. Now l still can't get this riff out of my head.
Damn you Marty!
lol! Well thankfully it wasn't How Many Say I. 😂
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank Heaven for that. I don't have enough Gold Bond to relieve that chaffing!
Just started watching and I can tell this is going to be good. 🤘
Sounds like Ed is hiding behind those amps playing ha ha great job Marty 👍🤘
Wow thanks dude!!
Thanks again Marty… I love that guitar.
Fantastic as usual Marty. I'm a huge fan of the '90s Van Halen sound. The wet dry wet set up is so huge sounding and I remember lusting after the musicman 🎸 in 1991 😊
Thanks! I love the Wet Dry Wet sound... The EBMM just takes it over the top. 😎🎸
I need to get that tone out of my Fender Mustang 3. I have a Wolf, need the Van Hagar tone! Good stuff👍
WoW, thank you man, great lesson
I am (for real, right now) looking at some other Judgement Day tutorial video on my tv and opened RUclips on my phone to check if you had a video on this song, and.. here it is 😂 just a couple of minutes old!
Switching over haha 😝
The phones are reading our minds!
@@Scottocaster6668 aaaaaaaaaaa 😱
Somehow Marty must be listening in then too and made that lesson real fast haha.
Great lesson Marty, I also want to know where you got that badass shirt 🤘
Excellent. 👍
Was this the album when he started using the 5150 amps? Great video Marty! I try to watch every one you post
Something I’m not used to on you VH lessons, is you are tuned to E 😉 I’ll use a capo.
Cool 🤘
Hey Marty! Great lesson! Idk why I'm feeling like the timing aka rhythm is off just a little on the second chord from the top. Maybe check it against the record? I know Eddie never played shit the same live so there's that. Thanks so much for this great lesson! :)
👍Thanks!
Great stuff Marty! I own a 1998 Axis. I honestly believe Eddie played his EBMM using the mid position on every track in the early 90's. It is very clear due to how full sounding his tone was back then. Especially in 1995 and his live tone.
How he tweaked his setup to get it to sound so amazing is a great question to me. Listen to Amsterdam on any 1995 live and his mid position is very clear to me.
Especially the Milan concert in Italy and others like Pensacola FL.

Marty... Have you heard about those Pariah Pasadena Black pickups? They sound freaking amazing!! Changing out my Wolfgang for one of these.
Yeh, thanks for the reminder man! I need to delve in and check those bad boys out. 😎🎸
That EBMM is something I have always dreamed about. Back then, I was like it’s like a strat and a LP but neither. 😂Anyways was a Soldano used for the recording of this song, if anyone knows?
Marty can you show us the technique for that pinch harmonic on the second fret g string because I can't get it for some reason it's a pain in the ass and it looks easy😎😐🤔😊
I think I figured it out😁😎
And as soon as I finish making that comment I hit the pinch harmonic it worked . I'm not sure but I think it's the way my finger is going across the string and I'm afraid to move it🙃😕😨😎
What’s your pedal set up for this song/album?
I can kind of get it but it doesn't sound right and I can't get it to sustain when I hit the whammy bar and I'm using a Wolf Gang standard with plenty of gain and a 5150 Overdrive and a DS1, I tried them both together I tried them them separate it's my technique definitely.
Sounds great! What effects and amp are you playing through?
Thanks! Fractal AX8 in stereo. Friedman BE with Friedman ML labs IRs. Stereo delay and chorus 😎🤟🏻
Can you eat a bag of Doritos and then teach class with cheese fingers so we can see where you're pressing down on the neck? 😂
Fractal?
Yeh. AX8. Friedman BE patch I slightly edited and ML labs Friedman IRs.
Thanks Marty! Tone is dead on
Thanks Geoffrey! The music man rules!
album has a lot of meat *** i have that concert shirt in black with f.u.c.k on the back - back then i thought $25 was a lot for a shirt at the show but now $50 !! great concert as well
lemme know if you wanna sell that music man axe
