    Couple tips.
    1. Use silver polish on nickle blocks to clean them. It is slightly less abrasive than copper polish so it won't harm the nickle. Works great!
    2. Don't use a toothbrush on clear acrylic. You will make a lot of micro scratches in the clear finish.
    3. All that metal you had collecting around the pump is from the lack of a corrosion inhibitor. Most coolants will have their own pros and cons, but clear Mayhems X1 (not Pastel, XT1, etc) is made of vegetable extract, has a good additive package, and will keep that buildup and wear away for a LONG time while also not staining components.
    4. Pick up some pH test strips from the corner store. If your water's pH is out of whack, it can accelerate the discoloration process and shorten the lifespan of everything in that loop.

    1- note to add coming back to this years later- So If you properly maintain your loop and use proper clear translucent coolant with a 1 year, drain, flush, refill. You will probably never have to go through using a toothbrush to clean everything, by the time you would have to do it, it would be time to create a new build requiring new parts for your main PC, usually I recycle the main system and its watercooling to a MultiMedia NAS box for the main TV, for light gaming, bulk storage, and backup, after it gets cycled twice it usually gets cleaned and put in the need a part bin or goes to a friend and family parts box.

  • @r3g3d17
    @r3g3d17 4 года назад +3

    Watching this while thinking about a custom loop system. If microbes and corrosion is such a big issue with the coolant used, how about a premium proplyne glycol coolant like pentofrost. That'll keep an engine fresh for 100K miles, its gotta be good enough for a PC.

    • @Incadazant01
      @Incadazant01 4 года назад +1

      Actually, Jayztwocents talked about this. The reason that antifreeze isn't used in water cooling systems in PC is because the antifreeze would chemically react with the components in the cooling system. Eventually, the system will develop structural failures, and you'll have leaks in all your tubing. Unless you build out a full metal only system, but then service is an UTTER bitch in the event something does go wrong.
      If you want to prevent microbial developments or corrosion in the loop, you should just get the appropriate additives that are designed for PC water cooling.

  • @paolof.6899
    @paolof.6899 6 лет назад +3

    Hey Linus have you ever thought of keeping water samples from your drained reservoirs and sending them in for trace analysis testing? Over time they may give you an idea of how well the parts are doing over their service life / warn of component failure being imminent, kind of like how is brass is detected in motor oil you know something bad is going to happen and it's time to do an overhaul.

    You have a compressor Linus! No need to blow!
    Also using soap instead of your spit for lubrication could be good if you are securing the lines (if not it could be "too slippery" and they could come off). Bonus is that it doesn't contaminate the water AND will reduce surface tension in the system. I'm a little surprised there's only a bit of purification drops and not water wetter or something similar.
    Lastly - back purging after running for a day with the reservoir at a high point could get ALL of the air out which could also prevent some buildup by preventing oxygen to whatever is growing in there.

    I recently had to do maintenance on my loop. It's a bit of a pain but unlike air where it degrades fairly quickly for even worse cooling, watercooling works so good that temps aren't even the reason you maintain it. And the fact that it's as quiet at full noise as an air system at idle is always a plus ;)

    Pro tip if you have one of those sealant testers that is sold by EK water blocks you can use the pump to push the water out of your loop as it only pumps air into the loop and air in the loop equals water out for those of you out there who have vertical systems might help you get water out of your system easier rather than blowing into it or even 3-D print a compressed air nozzle adaptor to seal your hose to a compressed air line and just blow the water out that way

    10:50 -- As a smell and corrosion etc. protectant -- why isn't anti-freeze used in liquid cooled rigs? The smell in water generally comes from microorganism/organic matter development. Even when distilled and finely filtered water is used, there is still some level of microorganisms present. 91% Isopropyl alcohol and/or anti-freeze might solve this issue. I do not know this for a fact, but whatever works on high performance racing car engines should be fine for high performance rig use.
    Any feedback on this topic would be most appreciated.

    You should have sent a sample of the "red residue" to a culture lab to see what exactly it was that was growing in there... then again... maybe it's just as well you don't know... THAT BEING SAID, it is most likely Serratia marcescens. A reddish colored mold that is commonly found in soil all over the world, but mostly in North American temperate climates, aaaaaaaand unclean bathrooms! Bon Appetit!

      It could also simply be copper or other alloys.

    • @crystalsoulslayer
      @crystalsoulslayer 6 лет назад

      Copper would have oxidized and turned green. It's almost certainly serratia.

    • @fostytou
      @fostytou 6 лет назад

      Crystal Soulslayer copper in water turns black (copper oxide CuO) not green (copper carbonate) which is from air. There was oxygen dissolved in the water and bubbling but there are also other sources like steel (likely plated) and nickel/etc. A nickel oxide could be green though.
      It is likely serratia, but not necessarily totally and possibly exacerbated by the metal bits and bubbling air.

    • @crystalsoulslayer
      @crystalsoulslayer 6 лет назад +1

      Hm, so it does. TIL. Though if there were any sulfurous / sodium compounds or acetic acid present, it could potentially turn green without needing open-air exposure.
      Do they use steel in water-cooling hardware, though? That seems like a recipe for instant galvanic corrosion.

      But this is also an extreme example. My loop has been running for over a year without maintenance there is no sign of gunk or anything in it.

    Sitting thinking about cleaning plexi-glass / acrylic / perspex. Here are my untried suggestions (in no order of recommendation):
    1. Warm salt water / saline solution - obviously if using salt, dissolve completely to avoid abrasion, and rinse like hell.
    2. Warm water and vinegar, again, rinse like hell.
    3. Sterilising fluid (e.g. Milton). This was suggested by the lady of the house, who was formerly employed in the refrigeration sector, and had 1st hand experience of engineers using Milton to flush systems.
    Would be curious to know if these have been tried. One for Linus Tech Tips to try.
    Oh and MDF? Seriously? :D

    FYI, 10:30, In the US it's finally been ruled/clarified that it is not legal to void a warranty because someone carried out repair or maintenance work. Once you purchase it you own it and they can't penalize you for maintaining your property. That came out the day after this video I think.
