  • In this video I show the strengths and weaknesses of the 6.5-300 WBY. I compare it to popular cartridges like the 6.5 Creed, 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC and 28 Nosler. Should I get one? Let me know below!

You know as I read through all the comments it's funny how some people claim to know so much about a gun they don't own. Yes , speed kills barrels, but it also kills anything it hits. So what if you only get 600 to 1000 shots out of a barrel. That is the cheapest replacement for so much fun and bragging rights. Go for it brother. Don't let the negative thoughts bother you.

I say absolutely yes you should. Ive got 2, an Accuguard and a Vanguard. Shouldn't have any trouble getting 1" groups with factory ammo. 127gr. LRX. Need brass? Buy the silver box 140 grain load. Cheaper than new brass.😮
Dont give a hoot about efficiency if i want go fast. Burn powder like a 427 cu/inch V8 burns gas, both go fast. I hear tails of a 7mm-378 on the horizon 😊.

I have a Mark v in 6.5x300 and all I can say is, wow. It's the fastest, flatest, cartridge that I have. 127 Barnes smoking. Shot a big male bobcat with it at about 120 yards and the cat fell before the sound left the barrel good. I mean it disappeared so fast I thought I missed. Went down to it a d it was laying there on its side. It had spun that cat 180 degrees and flipped it over at the same time. Bad to da bone.

I started looking at this cartridge a little differently when Dave Petzal wrote that he replaced his 300 Win Mag (not Wby Mag) Accumark with it and found it to be just as effective on game. Dave has also written before that he has used both the .270 Winchester (with 150 grain bullets) and the .300 Win Mag (with 180 grain bullets) extensively for hunting and cannot see a difference between them in terms of effectiveness on game.

I'm a 70 year old man and have hunted mule deer and elk since I could buy my first legal license at the age of 14. I have had average success so I've harvested a number of elk and have used lots of different calibers to do it. Where I live in southern Colorado there are opportunities to take long range shots but I don't if I'm not comfortable with the shot. In reality a shot across a 40 acre pasture is long. 440 yards. I've used the most popular magnum calibers, 7mm, 300, and 338. As the years have gone by I've lowered the number of rifles down to what works well for me. I've sold off all my magnum rifles because I don't need them and when reloading it costs much more than my other rifles. If I need magnum power I use my 35 Whelen which is a beast and the most efficient cartridge I've ever loaded for yet most often I don't need more than my 30-06 or a 275 Rigby.

Yes! Absolutely! I have a 6.5-300 and LOVE it! I always hated the 6.5 manbun and the hype as I was a 30 cal guy. Then I won a Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 6.5-300 and fell in love with the rifle/cartridge. It’s mild recoiling and crazy fast with a ton of energy dumped into the animal.
I’ve switched over to lead free as I eat only wild game and don’t want to add to much lead into my families diet (no matter how awesome Accubonds work). So the speed of the 6.5-300 has been amazingly effective with Barnes 127 gr LRX. I’m going to be working up loads with 130 gr Hornady CX though as well for a bit more oomph (not much but it’s got better SD) for my mountain goat, whitetail, mule deer, elk and moose hunts this fall.
And it has taken 3 big whitetail, and a big black bear this past season with more DRT than my 30-06 ever had. That’s what really sold me on it; seeing them drop in their tracks or only going 20 feet. If you’re using it for longer bullets and target shooting I’d suggest the 156 Berger… just don’t hit anything within 400 yards or it’ll grenade before it gets into the body cavity! It is a speedster for sure!

Yes, if your gonna go for an overbore speed demon, the 6.5x300wby is the way to go. People talking about efficiency, if efficiency was the topic then this cartridge wouldnt even be mentioned nor would a 26 Nos etc. This is about flat shooting and pure nasty sweaty sexy speed. I say good choice sir.
I have one in a Vanguard i got just for fun, killed 2 deer with it last season just to try it out. 127gr lrx, one ran hunkered hard with tail down for prob 12yds and killed over and the other is my biggest bodied buck to date, he went nowhere. 1st buck was approx 80yd shot, big guy was 218yds. Hit hard, killed quickly, but neither bled at all. Maybe thats on the lrx bullet but i dont like that. Still was fun to try it out.

If you want speed and more recoil than a 7rem mag. Then yes!!
I just finished my own research on the 6.5
    I choose the 6.5 PRC
Only because it has great ballistics and is more affordable than the Weatherby factory rounds.
Yes the 6.5 rpm is a little bit faster the 6.5-300 is a lot faster.
But for ethical hunting distance the 6.5 PRC
    Is very adequate.
But if you don’t care about barrel life, recoil,or ammunition cost

Very accurate and I’ve killed two bucks with the rifle and performance is good with those Barnes bullets cuz of the velocity. These bullets can withstand the high velocity and they do not blow up or blood shoot as bad as cup and core bullets. I haven’t tried anything bonded that 130 scirocco would be sweet too.

@@ReloadingWeatherbyWeatherby takes standard cartridges and makes them perform a whole lot better. Your 340 is a step up from the 338 Win, but nothing insane, that would make it useful only in a niche category. To me, the 6.5-300 is a highly specialized niche cartridge, ultra long range for limited size game, recoil and muzzle blast are extreme. I argue the same for the 338-378. The ROI is just not there.

Not much if you use the 127 LRX and especially if you don’t smash through both shoulders. I hit my animals through the lungs and just over the heart and they just drop with jelly in the middle. The one I hit through the shoulder (quartering to) it zipped through the muscle and bone and jellied the lungs. It was better than when I’ve done it with my 30-06 with 165 gr Accubonds. Less meat damage and a super quick lights out.
If you use softer bullets, like the 140 gr Hornady or the 156 gr Berger it’ll grenade; especially at closer range. But the Berger is designed for that at low speeds (and huge distances as it is designed to grenade after penetrating 2-3”) so imagine what it’d do at 3200 fps instead of 1800 fps lol 😂
