Hey Sam! Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated this video. I’m a high school junior, and I always thought that since I hadn’t started a national nonprofit or something that I had no shot at a prestigious school. But my extracurriculars are all very locally focused, like club presidencies, volunteering to help small businesses in my town, and I feel a little less hopeless because you did somewhat similar activities with your school. Also, I’m also a mid debater who will somehow be club president, so you’re definitely not alone lol. Unfortunately my school is really small and has no coach or class, so we can’t afford to go to state, but we try to go to a ton of regional or online tournaments.
Here is my perspective - If you plan to go to graduate school, it might be easier to apply to a lot of great non-ivy league schools in addition for undergraduate school. If you plan to not take a break in between, then you can focus on getting into an Ivy League for grad school which not only will be more intensive in studying BUT will be the last place you came from. At the end of the day, attending an Ivy League at any juncture begets you connections and from a resume standpoint, just seeing an ivy league anywhere whether it be for undergraduate or graduate is better than not seeing it.
This is amazing! As an extremely stressed out senior applying to about 21 colleges, this was really helpful so thank you! One quick question: do you think applying test optional isn’t necessarily the smartest idea? I know when you were applying there was probably no test optional choice but i tried twice on the SAT and didn’t do as well as i had hoped or good enough for the prestigious schools im applying to. The rest of my application is pretty strong as I’m in the top 10 of my class, i have a LOT of extracurriculars in/out of school(with a handful of leadership positions for a couple years now), I’ve done summer programs at prestigious universities that i had to apply for and got in without having to pay, and a variety of other stuff for my major (journalism/political science). I would love to know what you think! I’ve been upset about not scoring the best on the SAT so I just want to know your thoughts on submitting test opp. It would be highly highly appreciated :)
hey! definitely not an expert at all, but generally it looks like not submitting your score might be looked at unfavorably, according to this subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/hvjrc0/test_optional_breakdown_who_shouldshouldnt_do_it/ . I hope this helped somewhat, and best of luck to you :)
Dude, it was completely QuestBridge. Everything else you mentioned is similar to the 93% of applicants who were not admitted. As all the very top schools point out, 90% of their applicants are "qualified" for admission. It's that one unusual circumstance that puts an application over the line.
I’m a rising junior, what do you think are other leadership roles outside of school clubs that I can do? Because it might be too late to become president/any other role in the club because I’m now a junior joining the club for the first time.
@@flowgaming1006 try volunteering or joining internships that align with your interests! Ex: volunteering at a hospital/ court, interning at places, etc
Yeah, applications are super intense. But, it seems like the waiting is worse. I'm applying through the national college match, and waiting until December 1st is torture.
Kudos to being early to the game! For now, I would say the main thing is seeing where you want to devote your time, whether that's in the arts, policy work, etc. So try dabbling in different clubs and seeing what you like doing! It's always good to show long-term commitment in your application, and you want to make sure that you enjoy where you're devoting your time. Also, make sure to do well in class -- hope that helps :)
Good morning! I am working on my AA degree from a 2-year college. I have been studying at a 2-year for 7 years because I was a part time student. I have started a 2-year college after I graduated from high school. I have taken learning support courses for reading and writing. When I moved from state to state, I had to take developmental courses again for math and English. Then, I went to take college level courses for math and English later on. I am almost done with my AA degree. I am 24 years old, and I will be earning my AA degree at age 25 next semester. For right now, I am taking Spanish course for Heritage speakers in this semester and next semester in order to graduate with my AA degree from a 2-year college. Once I complete with my AA degree in General Ed, I will be doing training for acting and music that is related to television. Once I receive training for acting and music, I will be earning my BA degree in journalism while minoring in business to help me with my acting, music, and journalism career from television at a 4-year college. When I was in my junior year of high school, I have shredded papers with my paraprofessional teacher. When I was in high school, I was mostly in mainstream classes with my paraprofessional teacher supported me throughout my high school career. It was back in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. In 10th grade, I was mostly in life skills program. In 11th grade, I was mostly in mainstream classes but a few of them were in a small group. However, I was with many students most likely. I was diagnosed with autism at age 3. I grew up with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) during my school years. In high school, I have chosen five elective courses for myself. Then, the rest of them; they have chosen for me. I was in boys and girls club for 9th grade. In 10th grade, I was in Spanish club. In 12th grade, I was in National Honor Society. I graduated from high school in 6 years ago. I was a top 10% of my graduation class. I graduated from high school with a 3.7 as my overall grade point average. At a young age, I learned Spanish and English at the same time. However, I did not speak Spanish until age 16. I started to speak Spanish fluently at age 18. I grew up with my Spanish speaking family who are from Colombia and Puerto Rico. I had to switch schools from state to state for another 2 to 3 years at a young age because my dad’s military. In high school, I had to switch schools from state to state for another year as well! I have been to 6 different elementary schools, 2 different middle schools, 4 different high schools, and 3 different community colleges. I lived in three different states for 3 years, Virginia for 6 to 7 months, Puerto Rico for a year, and two different states for 2 years. I was born in the city of Buffalo in New York. I lived there in my early childhood until age 5. For right now, I am living in Florida. This is my last military move. Thankfully, I do not have to move again. My dad in the military is technically my stepdad. However, I always call him dad because I grew up with him. My mom is from Puerto Rico, and my stepdad is from Colombia. My bio dad is also from Puerto Rico. Congratulations on your academics and extracurriculars. You did a great job with your academics and extracurriculars. I really enjoyed your video because this is really helpful to me. I will be doing internship for journalism from a 4-year college next year in the fall. I had my first job at age 22 by assisted my stepdad for taking notes as administrative assistant from 2 years ago during the pandemic at his job. It was during the summer. It was a shadow job. Also, I am working on my book which is called my life throughout with autism and being a military child. Once I complete with my AA degree, I will be writing about my AA degree on my first book. Then, I will be all finish with my first book. For right now, I am working on my second book. I have started working on my first book at age 22. It was from 2 years ago when the pandemic have came. Then, I have restarted on working another book from last year at age 23. I have worked on my second book since the day I got COVID for 10 days of this summer. I have started It might have the same content but different chapters. My dream career is to be an actor, singer, and journalist on television. If the music does not workout, I will be working as an actor and journalist on television in the future. Hope everything is well with you! You are also a hard worker from school. Good luck with your dream college! Hopefully you get accepted to dream college what you want to go. I have a younger brother who is also in his second year as a freshman student from a 2-year college. He goes to the same college as me. I have a younger brother in my mom’s side. Also, I have four younger sisters and one baby brother in my bio dad’s side. I have a nephew in my first younger sister’s side. He will be turning 2 in January. It is pleasure to meet you, Sam! My name is Andres by the way. Again, good luck with your dream college. Your video is very helpful to me. I really enjoyed watching your video again. God bless you and your family! 🙏
Thanks for the tips!! I’m applying to Yale through the NCM this year so could you make a video about your process applying (if you applied through the qb match or regular decision)?
I have a leadership position in a pretty large red cross club, but I don't have many other ecs and I'm not exceptional at something. Not aiming for like a top school, but if I were to do some research and intern in a lab would that aid in admissions?
An entertaining video, but I start getting nervous cause I don’t have many stuffs to talk about (only 3 clubs). I thought getting into a safety school might be enough for me, but seeing all these amazing applicants here still make me think if I have put enough effort in or not.

Your channel is so cool!!! The video was really funny and it really helped me be less stressed about college. I’m currently a junior and I thought I was a good student with good grades but like I have a 3.7 gpa out of a 4. Which isn’t too bad, but it’s nothing special really (during COVID year, i slacked off cuz well we were home all the time and I had ZERO motivation). How can I improve my gpa now?? Or, if I want to get into a competitive school, how do I do that?? Thanks for uploading such informative and funny videos, keep it up 🆙🙃✨
