  • We recently upgraded our marine electronic instruments and in this video we show you the installation and fitting of our Raymarine i70s and how they interface with our Raymarine Axiom Chartplotter network using SeaTalk NG and Raynet.
We also install our new wind transducer, a triducer, a remote keypad for the Axiom at the helm and have a quick look at the information we’ll get on our augmented reality camera when it’s fitted.
With this new equipment we have a huge choice of previously, unavailable to us, information at our fingertips; including both true and apparent wind speed, sea temperature, and speed through the water.
One key benefit of this new equipment that we’re keen to try is the wind pilot which’ll keep the boat sailing to a chosen wind angle rather than just to a heading as before and having the remote keypad will make it much easier for the helm to control the chart plotter when single handed.

    Respect Iain….I wouldn’t know where to start!😊
So much useful information at your fingertips. I’m amazed how the electronics cope with the marine environment!
    Modern materials/sealing/plugs etc I suppose.
    Interesting and well explained.

Thanks Robin…I feared it would be quite a dry video but of interest to some hopefully. Yes modern electronics are quite incredible! Our displays are like the starship Enterprise compared to maybe 20 years ago! The basic skills remain as important as ever but all that extra info helps keep the skipper as informed as possible 😊

Very pleased; I'm sure you'll be an excellent ambassador for Raymarine.

A really interesting update and review. We're just going down a similar (less extensive!) approach with 2 i70s, an Axion+ 9" and new triducer and Wind. Just can't face going up the mast at the moment...

Cheers…it’s good kit you’ll enjoy using it 😊 I confess we spent a month or so with the wind transducer cable tied to the A frame until I summoned up the motivation to get up the mast! Good luck with the install 😊⛵️

Thank you, that’s good of you to say. I will add links in the next few days when I get a chance. I don’t believe Raymarine sell direct so I’ll link to the products rather than specific retailers. Cheers

Not for me. Well done on that install. I left it to the Raymarine engineer. i70 is my favourite piece for using the ais spy mode when racing other boats 🤣, Its good stuff but that paddle wheel is pants. I cant believe its not been replaced. Even new on the first day of use they are not good and they just get worse.

Thank you…it was quite a job but Raymarine sponsored the kit, not the fitting so I had to do it to save money. I must admit I share your concerns over paddle wheel logs and don’t think I’ve ever found a reliable one on all the boats I’ve owned or skippered! There are ultrasonic speed log sensors out there but haven’t experienced whether they are any good. I do still need to do a full, multi point speed calibration on the paddle wheel so we’ll see how it goes with that 🤞🏼😊

So all you need now is a cloaking device, huh?
