Emil Gilels plays "Songs without Words, Op. 38, No. 6 "Duetto".
From: VAI DVD 4466 Emil Gilels Live in Moscow Vol. 1
Gilels (1916-1985) was one of the 20th centurys foremost pianists. Like many Russian artists of his era, he was virtually unknown in the West until the cultural thaw of the mid-50s. Though Gilels repertoire was far-ranging, the music of the German Romantic era benefited particularly from his burnished tone, strong technique and unfussy yet elegant musicianship. The 1983 recital preserved on this DVD is devoted to the music of Schumann, Brahms, and Mendelssohn, including Brahmss Paganini Variations (Book I) and Schumanns Symphonic Etudes.
    93 minutes, Color, All regions.

The soprano voice answered by a tenor, and after exchanging soft words, they join voices to sing the song in octaves. The perfect representation of love. Mendelssohn gave this to his bride as a wedding gift. A great companion-piece to Schumann's bridal gift for Clara, Widmung.

Gilels was a master. Mendelssohn was also a master. This is a fabulous video. A tribute to two great musicians and a great treat for us.

Two voices singing to each other. Gilels has, in my ears, given the most expressive rendition ever. Thank you.

Simple , exquisite, direct, much like the man himself. I had the honor
of hearing Gilels in Westchester, New York 50 years ago. I never forgot how beautifully he played that night.

The way Emil Gilels bites upon his lower lip is unspeakably moving. The acoustics of the hall are rather crude for this son of the Gods.

    Gilels

Here, tempo should be related to how able one is to create and sustain the singing lines. I can't think of any pianist who could do this more beautifully - to spin, grade, colour, deepen, lighten, fade, crescendo; the burnished quality of his tone, approached in the manner of a very great singer. And how are these works titled? Yes, it is much slower than the basic indication, but Mendelssohn can be problematic in textures needing to be carefully balanced; tempo directions can often seem glib.

A thought on why this performance is slower than previous ones...people tend to get more introspective and thoughtful as they age. I love this slower pace.

My edition of Liede ohne Wörte indicates a higher tempo, but I'm not sure if that was Mendelssohn intention. However, Gilels makes a valid pint of his tempo through his own thoughtful, deep intepretation. IMHO

"Too slow" doesn't exist. Yes he plays it much slower than most other players...but who cares? From the first note you know that for HIM it had to be this tempo and his performance brought me to tears.
So what's your point...mechanicalness over taste? Well...good luck.

He played it much faster in his youth, and it sounded hurried ... just too fast. This version is much better. It is the right speed (for Gilels - other musicians will make it work at different tempi) to express the musical meaning of the piece

  • @grasscob

Music isn't praying to God. That belittles the greatness that it is. rather, it is "praying" to the universe. An infinitely majestic human creation, more beautiful because of how it came to be, without design by some mystical giant in the sky. The emotion is human alone, and thus, exquisite.

DG recently issued a CD of early recordings of Gilels...interestingly the 1947 recording of this piece is considerably faster with a recording time of 3'09.

Check out the video called "Young GILELS plays MENDELSSOHN Lied ohne Worte " - Younger Gilels played this much much faster - the tempo we hear here is the result of mature deliberation.

Is this january 9 1983? if so , how immense can a difference be? Listen to his recital two days earlier. I am not judging the difference. It is just two universes by the same master.

Murray Perahia is a one of the greatest pianists of our time and, specifically, a Bach interpreter on par with Richter and Edwin Fischer. you can express your sorrow about this as much as you like
having said that, while his interpretation of this piece is fine, it doesn't come close to Gilels' unfathomably profound and unbearably beautiful meditation upon love, life and death...

  • @prancingponies

His playing is a bit too slow. Makes it sound draggy. Murray Perahia's version makes the piece move along much more smoothly without getting bored. The original tempo is much much faster than this.

  • @TheGreatRichter
    @TheGreatRichter 16 лет назад

Too slow for me,sounds like he is sight reading and learning it for the first time, I know he isn't but that is what it sounds like, Murray Perahia's version is more like the tempo it should be and it sounds more romantic because of it.

Some of the most articulate, tasteful and amazing people swear like sailors. Vulgar tastes aren't something to be derided either.
The real reason you can say this person has vulgar tastes is because the only reason they say it sucks is because it's "to slow". Also I'd be quite happy to ridicule their intelligence based on their terrible use of (non-vulgar) language.

I see no impediment to talking about Murray Perahia at this day and age: his three odd decades in the front ranks of contemporary pianists render him immune to the kind of patronage that you exercise in the name of past greats as if he were some modish young thing
somehow it hardly comes as a mighty surprise that your solipsistic spouts should be couched in dreadful syntax...
