I am a licensed hairstylist and this is the best "DIY"layered haircut I have seen.
This is similar to what I would do, of course since I am doing it on someone else I am able to subsection the back and front and avoid overdirecting from the back to front, but this is a pretty technically correct haircut! MUCH better than the hair tie method!
+Erin Glassey aw thanks so much xx
I mean I feel like it's not that surprising seeing as she is a hairstylist hahaha
Erin Glassey. I agree. .I'm licensed also (so is she ) & this is the best example by far.. she's very talented.
I am the furthest thing from licensed and tried to save $ by following this video and cutting my own hair. I still messed up and had to get it fixed by a professional, but probably not as badly as I would have done without seeing this. Plus the stylist that fixed it said, "not bad!" Thanks for the vid!
Im.a hairdresser too ...dont ever cut your own hair ..you can really mess it up.
You did this 3 years ago and it's still making a difference. I just followed your tutorial and got a bomb haircut! Saved myself $55 bucks. Thanks!!
+Brenda Gonzalez hahaha i know it's been a long time!! cant believe it.. this is one of my first videos, the first video I made that actually got a lot of views, and to this day still my video with the most views :D guess i did something right back then lol. thanks for watching. xoxo

@@Ellebangs Hi Silvia! I was just wondering if this still apply to how you can cut long soft layers yourself? I personally think it helped my hair. I always cut my own hair but tried your tutorial yesterday and it looks so much more polished. The one step I wasn't doing was the point cut on the back. After seeing your video my approach on pulling the back to the front so I can see what I'm point cutting has been a game changer for me. Do you still cut your hair this way or do you have more tips you have shared since 2012? Thanks for sharing you tips on DIY hair coloring too! I'm getting ready to apply brown permanent dye to my blonde hair to create the balayage effect. I'm following one of your video's! I'm super excited to try this process! TYVM! 🙂
Hello my Angel!!!!, I am a X-Hair dresser from the late 70's, I am here to thank you!!! I am a breast Cancer patient and have not done my hair in three years!!! UGH!!! we all know what that is like, especially Cancer patients. I really appreciate your DYI, it made me feel at little better about myself. Thank you so Much.
Coronavirus lockdown 2020 this video is so needed right now
I know right 🤣😂
This video is needed more than ever today.
Don't be so agonized by world events.
@@MsJewka_ I agree it really dose but I'm nervous to
cut my own hair.
I ruined my hair yesterday, watched your video today and decide to try and fix the damage I made yesterday! It worked perfectly! Thank you so much!
I have been cutting my own hair for many years and have never really "loved" the look. This was perfect. Thank you so much.
Short jumps:
* * * DIVISION AND LENGTH * * *
1:26 beginning and dividing of hair to two sections (right and left)
1:36 dividing to four sections: left + right / back + front
2:01 choosing length of back section (demonstrating on left side)
3:33 choosing length on the front section (left side)
3:59 conecting back and front section (left side)
* * * LAYERING * * *
4:44 layering back section (left side)
6:47 layering front section (left side)
7:43 connecting back and front sections again (left side)
8:51 connecting front left and front right sections together
9:40 (optional) choosing bangs thickness
10:46 summing up
Hurray! In front of a mirror this is some serious neurological exercise.
Thanks for the 📹 video
💙
Thanks so much for breaking it into sections!
Thanks!

I will defiantly try this to straighten out the bad haircut I just paid $65 for, I'm ready to cut my own hair.
I have long thick hair. I've been doing 9 sections for the past 5 years. This can be overwhelming.. This has really simplified the process for me. I always got confused about the crown section & layers. This really simplified my whole process and just makes sense. I'm no stylist. Just a mom who couldn't find time to get to my salon. I've watched endless tutorials on cutting layers, sectioning, etc. Just do this & remember it doesn't have to be perfectly sectioned. I get compliments on my hair all the time.
it's so fun to look back my first videos and see how awkward i was.. and STILL AM! :D and seeing the viewer count past a million gives me goose bumps! so please make sure you stop by my channel and see my new videos with new awesome hair tips!!
Now that you are even better, do other diy haircut tutorials, please. They are so useful. Thanks a lot!
ellebangs I tried this myself and LOVE the way my hair came out! I watched both of your DYI videos on layering your own hair and I got something out of both of them. I like this video better for hand placement (do wish you did both sides), my hair is very thick and about as long as the second video. I went back to my hairdresser to color my hair shortly after I cut it and he didn't comment on "My" cut... although, his girls said; it came out great!~ It is exactly what I've been asking him to do for many years, but he would never listen to me. Thank you, thank you! I will be sending in my donation!
Desiree1176 I specialize in color, but cutting is fun too so I really should do a few more! :) thanks for watching! xo
+ellebangs I hope you also have color videos..this is the area I lack confidence in..Subscribed!
+Blessed I have many color videos :) go check em out! xx
Love this vid! So easy to follow. Living abroad and desperately needed hair cut due to damage but nervous of language barrier. I've now managed to get rid of all the damaged ends myself so hopefully my hair will gain length instead of breaking off now!
Tried this yesterday, and I absolutely love how it turned out! Every time I have been at the salon, I didn't feel like I got as many layers, as I asked for, no matter what I said, or which picture I showed.. And I just made them myself, yesterday :) wow, I'm satisfied 👍🏼 thank you so much
This is still by far my go-to trim in between salon visits or if I’m too busy. Everyone compliments my hair and are often shocked that I did it myself. Thank you so much for this tutorial.
Watching this, while in Quaretine. Love her. Thank you for showing this. I'm going to try this and DM you.
I looked up this video because I knew you had a good one about cutting your own hair. I was surprised to see how different you acted, but then I saw the date of the video. You have definitely come a long way and gained more confidence since this video. Thank you so much for continuing to make videos!
This was perfect! 😍 My hair went from dull to beautiful. I didn't think it'd be so easy
Every time that it’s time to trim my hair, I re-watch this video. So THANK YOU!!! It always turns out amazing! Super easy!! ❤️
I have to tell you... i did your basic "reverse balyage/hombre"first to bring back natural.. i was blown away by the simplicity and excellent result... now i decided to try this cut.. and GURLL.. I SWEAR you have just literally RESCUED my hair. i did great on both color and cut.. and the credit goes to you completely. excellent tips and teaching. thank you thank you!! this would have been hundreds and hundreds in a salon... now into damage control. in watching ALL your videos. You absolutely Rock!!
Thank you so much. I've been cutting my hair using your video for 2 years now. I even get compliments from people on how good hair looks. And I live in London, hair competition is fierce haha
I did this to my hair last night and i love it my boyfriend thought i went to a salon!! I think ive found my calling!!
omg this technique works so well, I can't believe that I was able to do this to my own hair. Thank You so much!!! :)
kalisha jones haha yay :) go watch my newer videos for more fun hair tips!
I've had so many hairdressers ruin my hair. I had this cut before the carnage and have been trying to get back to it. You made it so easy. I know I'll get better at it but it's a dream come true finding you. Thank you so much.
Me, too. Several times over the years, by hairdressers in different states. It’s been horrible.
Oh my gosh after the layers your hair immediately looks so much smoother and prettier. Can’t wait to try this, thank you!!
This is my go to video. Perfection everytime. For the last 6years. I know what to do just like to watch it again🙊💕❤
What a great tutorial! Just cut my own hair after losing another stylist. It looks fantastic!!
Jen Elliott great!! love hearing the feedback! xx
I watched this video 6 years ago and this has been my go to cut ever since. Looks great every time.
It works! I just did my own hair cut following this video, and what i achieved is the first haircut in my life which i love at first sight. I didn't just remove hair tips, following this video, I managed to get a lot smoother transition of hair layers, and a lot smoother transition to a formerly quite awkward bang too. Elle, you are Great!
another comment by either friend/relative/buddy click bait. ummmm. we can see your hair in the picture you posted so nice try cutting , layering straight, long thin hair when yours is short, thick wavy and full. you kind of ppl. bug me so much. some young kid is gonna ruin her hair not realising hair extensions were used, and cheap clip ins to boot. she didn't touch her hair and you know it.
@@honeyowen3163 um what
@@honeyowen3163 What is your problem??
Woooonderful tutorial!!! one of the best I've watched, you are so skilled. Thank you.
I was about to get $20 haircut, but I went for it and tried this out, and honestly I can say I love it! Thanks (x
Been cutting my own hair for two years now but never had a real solid system until I watched this video! Thank you! My hair came out awesome this time!
I've been cutting my own long hair for years, and always love having layers. I was debating about going to a salon again, but after watching this right now, it encouraged me to keep cutting my own hair. Thanks, good reminder tips. :)
I have natural really wavy hair. So after I wash and dry it I straighten it then cut. That way I can wear it natural or straighten. Thank you so much for this. I am so glad I found you. I have been trying to achieve this for years and never could get it. NOW I CAN!!!!
Easy to follow! Trimmed and layered my long hair during quarantine and I'm soooo happy with the cut. Thank you!!
@ellebangs BRING THIS STYLE BACK! Show us an updated video of this haircut ❤️
I've been trimming my own hair since I watched this video and the health of my hair has improved greatly by keeping the dry ends cut off. It also has lengthened the time between hair appointments. Thank you!
I watched your tutorial and I just had to try it. So I did )) My hair is coarse, thick and wavy and it badly needed a haircut anyway, so I decided to experiment and see what happens. And, OMG, it worked and my hair looks great! Thank you sooo much for that video!
Yay. Its a little more difficult on someone with coarse hair, so Im proud and glad you like it! Thanks for watching! Ksenia Boroday
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I work in the service industry (for now), and keeping my hair pulled back all the time just destroys it. I use this tute regularly to keep my hair looking healthy (but still long enough to keep it out of my face for work). A+! :)
wow thanks so much silvia! after 20 years cutting my hair myself - always straight, never dared to do otherwise - finally i did a layer haircut to myself and it looks great!
I have commented on this video already but had to come back to share that this is helping so many people. The results are really actually professional ones if you just do as she explains in her video and Take Your time. Dry hair does have a huge advantage for you too. I will be continuing to do this even once lockdowns are over. This is a great way for our family to save money and time and getting it done properly. I dont colour my hair but there are some amazing videos for that too. Just gotta do things properly. Going blonde is the most tricky one but simple once you learn how. Been there and done that but its been ages and i love my natural colour so its here to stay
yes I get asked that A LOT! :) video on that coming soon! I def do a lot of damage to my hair. with color, highlighting and heat tools. But there are def tricks to help. STay tuned for the video coming soon.
Onmkmqaaaa?a ma alanyln
Nice. I especially like how you explain why you direct your hair in different directions before making a cut.
After all these years of explaining to a stylist what I want and them never getting it. Me paying lots of money to someone who doesn't do it right, nor even close. This video is exactly what I want. I'm so proud of this lady for taking her time and talent and obvious joy of cutting hair to share this explanation and talk me through it. I did it! I tried it and I love it. Thankyou more than you will ever know! THANKYOU!
thank you so much! it’s so awesome that you’re a professional who’s actually willing to help vs being super judgmental like most professionals are
So nice to see a refreshing and beautiful face that isnt caked in makeup or false lashes! Very pretty and natural. Love the way you got straight into this tutorial without wasting time on chit chat 😄 a very concise, easy to see and listen to tutorial. I am going to try this myself. Really appreciate this video. Thanks.
This was so helpful. Thank you!
I love this video. I have been cutting my own hair for about a year with the instructions. I go back and watch just to refresh my memory every few months since I am not a hair stylist. My hair always turns out perfect!!
Twice over the years, I've done something stupid to my color and desperately came to your channel and asked for help and you answered me. You are SO sweet. And now I found this older video of yours and I was actually able to do it! I gave myself a trim and got rid of the dead ends and I can't believe it, but it looks great! Thanks so much, as always. :)
I just did it and it totally worked! My hair looks cute!
It's not the first time I've cut my hair but it was the first time I used her method.
It's really easy though, look up how to do a "heart shaped" hair cut, that's what I started with and it's so easy.
Indecisivegurrl Alex Glad to hear you have tried this out and loved it!!
I did this in October, trying to grow my hair out so on this day it's round two, my hairs grown a bit I'm excited I love this video it's clear and simple for anyone. I have some experience so I find it easy, love you and your hair. Loving all the new vids as well!! Keep it up!! =) -Carrissa
I started cutting my own long layers during COVID and now I can trim my layers in 5 mins. Thank you!! Great tutorial!
This is the best tutorial for layers that I've tried! I was put off at first because you have very straight hair and I've got very thick, naturally curly hair but this cut helps it sit brilliantly. I'm also impressed at how easy it is to do. Love it, thank you :-)
Thank you so much, this helped huge! Also, you're gorgeous!
Thank you so much for making this video! This was exactly the look I was after and it was so easy to follow your steps. Thanks again!!
thank you
Thank you so much for sharing. I watched this several times before trying it. I've now used your techniques for 5 haircuts and I've been very very happy with the results! It looks just as good as any salon cut I ever had. I suggest people try the cutting the layers a little longer than you think at first, so if you make a mistake (like I did the first couple cuts), then you can simply cut an inch or so off the length for a perfect cut. Saving lot's of money and really happy with the results! Thank you!
Thank you for posting! I was able to cut my hair in exactly the way I wanted it, which saved me money by not having to go to a stylist!!!!!! THANK YOU!
I've been doing this haircut on my curly hair for a long time because it worked. I'm glad to see that it's an actual haircut. You did a fantastic job. I'm inspired to trim my own hair tomorrow. I save alot of money by doing that.

Do you straighten it first, or do it wet? I have curly hair too and have been trying to polish the way I cut my hair. This video made it less of a mystery, which is SO helpful!
jessica --- pls don't do 'cut in' to curly hair ever! ---
I just want to say THANK YOU. It took me a good while to get my hair done, bc I am OCD and kept watching each step and pausing and going back, and then after the basics I kinda just took it to explore the steps over again. I love my hair. I cut it dry, and wetted the ends some bc my hair can tends to curl up in some places. But you're amazing and I can't say thank you enough.
I did this yesterday and it turned out PERFECTLY! No more salon trims for me. Thanks for the video!!!
i have watched several tutorials over the last few months and this is by far the best ive seen. I cut my own hair all the time but needed a brush up, and this is right on target.
I’m so confused!!!!! How is it that someone who is a “professional” in the “beauty industry” has less than a million followers.. yet she’s been on RUclips for over 8 years..... doesn’t have that many followers!!!?!!! I guess people only care about their makeup and not their hair!!!?!! I mean I don’t wanna wear wigs n extensions my whole life!! I want to color my own hair.. cut my own hair..... legit SAVE some money lol. I mean I love your tutorials!! From when u had skinny ass brows to where you’re looking amazing ... redken ambassador... I mean literally making me buy everything. I need to make my hair healthier .. I think hair makes a huge ass difference in appearance and age !!!! Love u girl
I agree, she deserves more followers! So pretty, too!
I'm a licensed cosmetologist in 2 states and I have to say this is the best video I've seen on how to cut your own hair because you can never trust your best friend or you always get a hairdresser that loves to cut a little too short. Very nice!
friend or family? she has a dollar store clip in hair extension and never touches her hair. PPL. LIKE YOU are gonna ruin some young girls hair because she thinks this idiot is actually cutting her hair when she doesn't even touch it.
honey owen could you provide a time stamp to where you can see the hair extension clip in?
I've been searching through all the cut your own hair tutorials and so happy I found your tutorial. Your hair and layers aren't so long that I can't see what is going on and you explain this without feeling too complicating. new subbie here; I really appreciate this video, can't wait to try!
I just tried this last night and was amazed at how great it turned out! I did find it a bit tricky to do, especially the back parts, as my hair is so thick.. could you maybe show/explain how you would further section the hair for those of us who have a lot of hair? Also, would you recommend straightening it first? my tips wee all bending this way or that, which also my made it a bit tricky..
Thanks for the video though, can't believe I can maintain my hair at home now! Brilliant!
Loved this! Thanks for taking the time to make it!
I'm 50 years old and just tried this...LOVE IT!!! Just found your videos today and I am watching them all. Thanks for sharing!!!
aw thanks so much :) always appreciated and please share my videos! :) xo
Used this to cut my hair for the first time at home! It looks awesome! Thank you so much 😘
wow this helped me out so much thank you!
You're so pretty. Your color hair is perfect for you too. :-)
I just tried this cut and my hair looks amazing. It is simple yet makes perfect sense. My hair is mediterranean and wavy and this works perfecto for wavy hair. It kindda looks to the trims I get in the salon where they spend much less time and effort and charge me 80 euros. Thanks Silvia for all your videos, I am now cutting my hair and colouring it as well at least retouching following some of your videos. This one is just amazing. Muchas gracias!!
I've never really been the type to go to salons much, but since watching this video two years ago..Here I am still referencing back and cutting my own hair. 2k18. Thanks love! 💕
Omg! My hair Is so difficult and this worked perfectly! I have absolutely no experience cutting hair, this video is the best!! Thank you, thank you!!! I'm never paying for a haircut again! My hair looks awesome!
So happy u liked it! Please take a sec and share my video in support :)
just cut my own hair by following this tutorial and im really happy with it .. amazing :)X
Thank you! It is nice to see how you actually show a step by step process and not sloppily done!
Have been cutting my own hair at home in my own way for years but found these vidios so helpful. I wouldn't dare go public with my cutting method and think you are all so brave. Please carry on. Its such a help and you all make it look so easy. A big thank you.
it would be awesome if you could do more hair cutting tutorials ! i struggle with clipper cuts X0X0
You have beautiful hair!
I have watched a lot of videos for DIY layered cuts and this is the best and I like that she did it with the hair dry because u do see the results instantly.I also love those scissors. Thanks for this video,i feel more confident to cut my hair.
This was a wonderful video. Thank you for making it. I have been growing out my hair and was tired of the "mom" style. I have naturally curly hair so cutting it myself is super forgiving but finding a style that has some "style" is not easy. This was perfect and looks fantastic. Thank you so much!
Hi, I just spent over an hour cutting 2 inches of length from my hair while cutting along to your video. Turned out pretty decent. You make it look easy. Guess it just takes practice. Kinda fun giving yourself a haircut. :) It's hard to stop doing fine tuning here and there. I'll be checking out your other vids. Thank you!

I love your hair!!! You look absolutely amazing! Does this cut work on thinner hair and not so much hair?
I've been following you forever! You were just a baby!! And u didn't need botox yet. Can't believe you've grown your platform so much, and you are so much more relaxed in front of the camera. So proud of you 👏 🥰
thank you tank you thank you! I messed up my layers last year and haven't touched my hair since and now that they're grown out i've wanted to fix them and this really really helped me. i feel confident now!
You cut hair waaay better than some hairdressers!
I just had a haircut and asked for a layered bob. Guess what- he cut it in a straight line :(
Anyone else here because all the hair salons are closed 😩 lmao
Meeeee.
You guessed it
Miss Jess yep
Miss Jess yes. Hope I can do this.
Yup
Love your generous videos! I've learned more about about my hair and how to be kind to it from you than I ever did from Red Door stylist. Thank you!!!!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial ! I would have never dared to cut my hair before seeing this.. happy to say it came out pretty good for my first attempt and my blonde hair feels so refreshed and healthier! Thanks again Silvia!
Love this!! What scissors did you use to cut your hair?
2019?? 😂♥️♥️♥️

I've been cutting and coloring my own hair for years. I love your videos because you just make it look so easy.
Just to say you are not awkward but rather clear and concise in your explanations. Thanks for the video. x
I made it to the last mod of cosmetology scool, and quit the day I was to go cut 'on the floor'. I was petrified of ruining someone's hair. True Story.
Can you recommend a nice pair of shears? :) thanks!
Sam Villa shears . Check out his website
This tutorial is the best! Thank you. I followed your instruction and my hair finally look great.
WOW ~ I have watched numerous people cut their hair on RUclips.
You are the ✨first ✨person I have watched that has explained the "hair cutting theory" in simple terms.
You made this process seem attainable. ✨Thank you so much✨🙋🏼🇨🇦
So it’s safe to cut your hair at home instead of going to the salon? I feel like my hairdresser is always so scissor happy and that’s why I can never grow my hair very long if o keep going to the salon. -Mehrnaz
I think your videos are amazing ! Could you do a video on cutting a aline/inverted bob ? And explain how to make a round face seem longer .. I want to do that cut but I don't want my face looking more fat than it already is .. thank you :)
***** I doubt your face it "fat" will keep this in mind for my next recording!! :)
Honey yes my face is fat along with the rest of me .. I can email you a pic lol ... thank you I'm supposed to go to the salon Tuesday and I'm a little scared to be honest .. thank you again
***** it went well thank you for asking .. it was scary but I made it through .. you can see my pic on my Instagram if you like BeachKindaGrl. . Thank you again..
I tried this a few months ago, and it turned out GREAT! I have been cutting my hair for a while now, by myself, and I was so happy to find this tutorial that I saved it as a favorite. This is my second time coming back to it, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to add in some layers. It was super simple, the only difficult part was adjusting to the view in the mirror, but even that got easier and didn't affect the cut of my hair. =0) Thank you so much!
thank you for this; I've always loved the shag since I was in hs in the '70's!
Def gonna try this. You remind me of my biggest mistake when graduating high school...NOT going to cosmo school! ; 0)

Aww thanks but turning 43 in a couple weeks. ..kinda late to start! Love ur videos though. Lots of fun ibstruction & info. Thanks
