In this video, we explore the life and work of Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. In particular, we focus in on his contemplations and revolutionary understanding of angst, or anxiety, looking into questions like: what is anxiety, where does it come from, and how can we use it to become who we really are?

To become comfortable with the idea of there being no smooth path through life is to, in my eyes, overcome the anxiety of everyday. Being able to not think of the past nor the future, to just be comfortable in the present with no worries, would be such a wonderful point to reach in life.

Anxiety is simply, fear. Fear is powerful not anxiety, anxiety is what we do to ourselfs because of fear. You could say that we chose to think the car has no break pedal or that there is fog everywhere, because we fear so much to "drive".
Anxiety is like a demon in your head who tries to drag you down to tell you, you can't, you must stop or go back, to freeze. You must tell yourself, i am stronger than my fear in those moments. You litteraly must be prepared to die! Because only then, you can truly live.

Anxiety is just your mind reminding you about something important. It might not really be important but it’s important to you. Take that panicked energy and focus it on solving the problem. It’s the whole reason it exists, to either fight, flight or freeze when in danger. Not always even serious danger. Hunger will make you anxious and keep you awake until you eat. It will make you be extra careful in certain situations. It will tell you when you gotta get outta there. And it will tell you when you freeze and think before you act. I have bipolar 2 and the anxiety can be crippling if you don’t channel the energy. I’d rather be depressed than anxious any day. I’m not saying it’s easy to channel the energy at all.

The problem with this existential viewpoint, which essentially boils down to “suck it up, life will never be perfect so just go conquer your fears” is that it’s setting up many people for failure if they can’t defeat their own anxiety. The failure is too easily interpreted as a character flaw, lack of willpower etc which then cycles back through the existing negative feedback loop of that person’s distorted inner world, creating more anxiety. End result is usually the person feels crappy and ashamed for not being able to “figure themselves out”. If someone is suffering from debilitating anxiety or depression they can’t defeat it themselves! It is virtually impossible to dig yourself out of your own hole, the thing you are trying to defeat impacts the brains ability to solve its own problem!
The underlying issue is that Kierkegaard did his thing long before the advent of modern psychological techniques and neuroscience/ cognitive science. His insights were brilliant but now we know a lot more about how this shit works. What we know now is that you are missing the role of the repressed unconscious, and most importantly how unresolved childhood fears can manifest as anxiety in adults.
You can’t “conquer your fear” if your fear is unconscious (hiding in the “shadow” in Jung speak)! If you’ve resolved any remnant childhood issues and are a “fully realized” adult, then yeah sure normal life involves a degree of healthy anxiety. But if you aren’t even consciously aware of the root source of the anxiety because your own brain is hiding it from you, then at best the Kierkegaard inspired approach will allow to mitigate the symptoms to be a “functioning” adult. Until you lower the ego, address the unconscious “inner demons” and create more balance in the psyche, you will never be able to tell the difference between “healthy anxiety” and unhealthy self defeating BS your unconscious is inventing.
Please anyone out there who watches this and thinks they are a failure because they can’t follow this path - it’s not your fault! Seek out therapy if you can’t get yourself unstuck!

I was a nervous wreck, I remember when my father told me, “Your mind is running? Then go about your day, but, instead, occupy that end of your mind by focusing on your breath.” I was able to complete tasks while focusing on my breathing patterns and breathing deeply. I then realized that, this anxiety provided me with the ability to focus on two tasks at once, it’s actually boosting my brain-power. I had this ‘energy’ that I wasn’t using, constantly (GAD). It was just misguided. My life has never been the same, I trained my mind this way - perceiving the anxiety rather as a form of energy that I could pull from. It all sounds rather outlandish, but it definitely helped me in overcoming my anxiety and the frazzled state that it left my mind in. I was able to see clearly once again. Also, reframing. Don’t be afraid of anxiety, view it from the third person and ask why you’re really anxious. Be honest with yourself.

But when I was crippled by depression and forced to experience an endless cycle of torture inside my head, this is the exact thought that came into my head during one of those thought explosions that happens. I didn’t take any meds, I sat and endured and kept reminding myself this ought to be some sorta gift for people who are creatively inclined. I started using those endless thought bombardment in my writings. It gave me a new lease of life, I started feeling better while creating strange new worlds just for my amusement. I’m not a successful writer or anything. But the decision to use those crippling fear and anxiety and casting them on my characters have helped me in creating people that almost as real as the people I know. While I write their way to redemption, I somehow gets redeemed in the process too.

It's so interesting how that works. By writing about it you probably have to really try to experience your anxiety in order to put it into words and by fully feeling it you're processing those emotions.
I wish i could do that, but as a musician i never found a way to channel my anxiety as a creative source. My anxiety made me numb and unproductive and even turned creativity into something i have anxiety about.
I think my mistake is ive always done things in spite of my anxiety by pushing myself instead of embracing the anxiety itself and really feeling it. I'm always creative in short bursts and anxiety stops me. Maybe next time i'll focus in on that feeling and see what happens.

Fear (Anxiety) a feeling I've run from for most of my life; a feeling that has so marginalized and limited my life, choked my creativity and self-expression. I have realized later in life that fear, my near-constant companion, has also been my greatest teacher. I've had important lessons to learn in this life that only fear could teach me. As a dear saying goes, 'what's bitter at the start is sweeter in the end' - this has become a reality for me. Today, I understand that the only way to resolve fear is to walk directly into it. After running from fear all my life, this idea was radical and stunning. I started mindfully walking toward that which frightened and terrified me, and my life has changed dramatically. It took time, and diligent practice, but anything of value in life is worth effort and sacrifice. My daily sacrifice is letting go of control. Of course, I don't do it perfectly, or even consistently, but I do it enough to make an ongoing difference in the quality of my life. Just recently, I went skydiving. I literally jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet. It was terrifying, extraordinary and brilliant. People said I was crazy. I didn't care. I wanted to jump into fear and give it two middle fingers up, and I screamed my lungs off in the fall, but what a fall it was - the view was breathtakingly gorgeous. I then retreated to the Peruvian Amazon to a Temple, to avail myself of plant medicine to heal my heart and my soul. Again, some people thought I was crazy. The trip was absolutely challenging and sacred. I opened my heart to the unknown and came out the other side with an enormous sense of really living and experiencing the profundity of life, and of my being. I'm not the same person I was in my early life; I could never be. I have and am becoming who, I imagine, I was always destined to be.

You can either do your best(and face hardship) or give up(and end up sad and unaccomplished). Either way you’ll regret it. No matter how you live you’ll regret some aspect of it, and you’ll love some aspect of it. There are states ofc that are simply worse then others, like a life of constant torture for example, but choose pretty much any philosophy and you’ll end up happy in some ways, and unhappy in other ways. Maybe the best thing to know is just that we will never fully be satisfied, and we’ll never attain a state of consistent happiness. So just live, however you can

It is not because people do not understand you or things are not going your way. A lot of us experience anxiety as a parasite that will never let you go, as chains, a cell, a room in which you can not escape from, oppressing you from ever doing anything,
Never being able to free oneself from anxiety.
But the thought of anxiety as the byproduct of freedom, give's us (myself included) a sort of ironic comfort in it.

I do want to work to start facing my fears and get out of my comfort zone and experience things I haven't before/ It is fear that holds me back. I wanna experience seeing other places. I haven't left my home town in so long for fear of leaving my comfort zone. But never leaving your comfort zone and never doing the things you always wanted out of fear and anxiety can lead one to think about all the could of, would of, should of, and wondering how different their life would have been had they just taken a chance to step out of their comfort zone. Life is very short and this is the only existence we'll ever know. I know I need to stop wasting whatever time I have left.

Once you realize that your thoughts and emotions are a biological reaction, you can choose to accept that your feeling this but also be aware that not "all" of you feels this way. Your body is telling you how you should feel through emotions and thoughts but we are only conscious awareness and are not controlled by these responses.

The doctors told me nothing was wrong with my heart, as I was extremely young. Needless to say, I ended up with my masters in business…my doctor got so many calls about my chest pains and just said “anxiety bud, you’ll get throw it no need to worry.” Keep pushing, now I have anxiety but not like that. I just chalk up any obstacle by saying “it wasn’t harder than getting my masters degree.” My son and daughter appreciates it too, it moved us out of the neighborhood we were in. There is something soothing in the way you speak, in the way you bring your thoughts to life lately. There is a war in my country and knowing that I am fighting for freedom for my land for my people makes me experience life from the whole different perspective. Now with the knowledge that I can die at any given second that fact that you made a new video somehow warming and grounding and death is not that scary again. Thank you for being there somewhere.

As one who is also haunted by the existencial anxisis, i can firmily say that one "shaperning your axe", is to become everyday more capable, more enlightened among the fog, to be able to see the anxiety for what it truly is, the excitement for being alive, for being able to see what we are and all the possibilities of what we can be.
Why one only looks for comfort and seetlement? When we can be so much more!!
    Comfort breeds weakness!

I have a disorder in this area.
The by-products of which are intense, troubling, tiring and truly unpleasant.
I feel that anxiety is the price paid in living life and I pay it daily.
I aim to continue to live my life as best and graciously as I can.
Acceptance is fundamental and continuing to live is a must.
My thoughts and well wishes go to all that resonate with my words.

Great video! You can really see how the plot of the movie "Around Round" revolves around Kierkegaard and anxiety (with the depressed and anxious characters drinking their anxiety away). The movie has many references to Kierkegaard as well.

Fantastic video - which I feel will have a profound affect on my life! Understanding that it's 'normal' for us to feel anxious and paralysed by the vast amount of choice we have, makes the situation feel far more manageable. The concept of acknowledging this and pushing through the fear barrier makes total sense to me, and I can see the power that's possible with this awareness.

This one in particular speaks to me on a very deep level, because I can see myself in the cases you describe. I avoided, still do to this day (but I'm working on myself), looking within me, to understand what I really want, because I don't want to face the anxiety that comes with pursuing my biggest interests/passions.

Mindfulness, ACT therapy, EMDR and CBT/DBT have been god sends for my repeated SA as a child and domestic violence as a teenager. Honestly I view emotions as dash lights, those therapies are what I use to cope with my anxiety. Stimulating my para sympathetic nervous system is the kindest thing I’ve ever learned to do for myself. 💕

EMDR and medical cann@b!s have worked really well for me. With EMDR I've made breakthroughs I was told by other another therapist flat out I would never make in regards to my very early life. Instead I uncovered a bevy of new memories that I was able to see where some of the deep seated anxiety issues I have come from. While I don't know if the conflict and trauma that happened to me will ever be fully and truly resolved, just knowing that there IS that logical root all the way back when I was a really young helps. Anyway, EMDR has really helped me.

I remember Kierkegaard as one of only two philosophers we saw in art philosophy at college who made even a little bit of sense.
You cannot imagine how often I was baffled at filosophers throughout 2000 years of human history going back and forth saying “beauty is objective” “no, it’s entirely subjective”, and then, finally, there was Kierkegaard. If I remember correctly (and I might be adding my own flair) he finally allowed me to keep my faith in humanity with, “It’s really quite simple. It’s not objective, but we have some inherent tendencies towards finding certain things beautiful, so to say it’s entirely subjective is too radical.”
It seems to me that one of the bigger causes of human suffering is that somehow, people often just spend thousands of years failing to consider moderation.
I’ve always felt like I should know more about him, but never spent the time to look him up. Here I am, meeting him again and again finding myself agreeing with him.

I guess the point is not to try to eliminate anxiety completely but to understand that anxiety is a part of life. Its reminds you that you're alive, that you're human too. Just like happiness, joy, love, there will be other sides to that too. I think a big part of this is that you dont have to be at peace with those other sides as they are not meant to be insignificant. Its normal to be anxious... or sad...its normal to be upset ..its normal to be angry...the weight of those things will try to wage war on you and while they do hurt and suck... don't let them consume you more than they can. I really hope i have the right idea on so this so feel free to add your own ideas. I was always told you have to do things that are uncomfortable...you have to go against the "i dont want to" 's sometimes. This doesnt mean do everything that makes you uncomfortable as there are thing that are genuinely uncomfortable for a reason... but it does mean to carve out a better future you must not avoid doing certain things that make you anxious or annoyed or uncomfortable
the way you explained anxiety gave me anxiety and almost made me stop watching the vid lol...the music and the almost suspenseful feeling just made me uncomfortable as i feel like my life is going nowhere and im slowly running out of time...going through alot of embarrassing stuff in my life and being so mentally weak in some areas i think i really needed this video.

I can see it offering useful guidance to youth beginning to ask the right questions but only finding the wrong answers within noise of a capitalist society.
