- Søren Kierkegaard was a profound and prolific 19th century writer and philosopher in the Danish Golden Age of intellectual and artistic activity. He wrote about how we choose to live and what it means to be alive, centred in the individual or “existing being”. He is regarded as the father of Existentialism. The stress of subjectivity is one of Kierkegaard’s main contributions.
His concept of anxiety or angst is one of the most profound pre-Freudian works of psychology. His most popular work includes the leap of faith, the concept of angst, the three stages on life (aesthetic, ethical, religious), among others.

I really don't tend to regret things. What's done is done. Even if you do regret it though, what point does that make?
I suppose if you do both you regret it as well.
... but you don't regret thinking about all possibilities, that's one value of life to increase true understanding what is all about (like the famous number 42), without social pressure and false expectations.
@@RoyArrowood Well, I think that your emotional capacity for handling such situations is excellent, and whilst you might be unremorseful about occuring things, others might be, and sometimes they even wish to get the opportunity and redo things again. What's done is done, yes. But when you really think about it, there are really times when we truly wish we could've done so much better than we would've, or revert things to its past form.

I broke off an engagement at the start of this year, it was a very painful experience for all parties involved. I was on a path of self realisation before the relationship started and was really coming into myself and regaining a love for life after years of suicidal ideation and stagnation. She was very loving and offered a situation where I could live comfortably from a monetary standpoint, something I have never had after a turbulent family life and spending my whole adult life in debt.
This past 6 months I have never been worse off financially, working at a fast food restaurant to barely cover my rent, choosing between paying bills or buying food, but every day I spend the majority of my time with philosophical enquiry and have been learning art fundamentals to produce something of my own, to try and represent somewhat that which exists in my mind and I have never felt more at one with myself and the world around me.
I am not in my youth anymore, and I will likely spend the rest of my life by myself. I cannot justify any of my actions, and I am not a responsible person who can offer any security or likely have the resources for a family situation. I have made the decision that I will give my all to realising my true nature, even if it kills me. I have already resigned to being a normal human being, I wish to be nothing, but know I must first become something.
Probably too much of my personal information has been shared within this, but that is not something that bothers me. I just want you to know how much your videos and explanations of ideas has helped me. Thank you for creating this content
As the text says on the oracle of Delphi: "Know thyself". For some of us, that is the only meaningful path. The outcome is not certain, but that is okay because the prosess itself is the reward.

Kierkegaard didn't live not even a half a century but had incredible insights and answers to man's lost condition and the remedy
I took two philosophy courses in college only heard of Kierkegaard a few times. This was fantastic. The fact that we spent months on existentialism and he was only mentioned twice is a shame.

So the issue in my university was that they treated Sartre and Thoreau as if they were the fathers of existentialism. One of my professors clearly had a thing for Thoreau as we spent about three weeks on him alone which felt... heavy handed. We were taught that Kierkegaard was -the- father of existentialism but then they barely taught him at all. Moved right on to Sartre.
@@BlindJediKnight ohhh, that seems biased. It's a shame but it is to be expected in the university, Kierkegaard maybe is kind of taboo. Regardless, another reason why self-education is paramount!

I really like the way you capture Kierkegaard's ideas. I do want to point out that in the story of Abraham and Isaac, Abraham does not kill Isaac. God provides an animal rustling in the bush and Abraham takes that as a sign from God not to sacrifice his son, but to sacrifice an animal instead. But you were right in noting that this was a battle between ethics and faith (or as you say "religion"). Because the dilemma was choosing between Abraham's own son's life and his love for God.

"Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced". I had heard the phrase before. It's in Dune, by Frank Herbert. I don't recall who says it but, in the 2021 movie, it's Jamis who says this to Paul Atreides in a dream. So Frank Herbert was fond of Kierkegaard. Or at least familiar with his philosophy. Not surprising given how introspective the Dune saga is. How wonderful!
PS: Dune. Highly recommended.
In the beginning, I liked that quote so much "Life can only be understood backwards; But must be lived forwards" that I wrote it down on my whiteboard. I had to re-watch a couple parts towards then to get the whole effect into it. Especially the part about getting married or don't get married, you'll regret it either way. Hang or don't hang you'll regret that decision too. Interesting to think about. Awesome video man, you always have great videos!

The goal of being is the actual experience of being here and now such that we are truly real. The more real people are the greater the experience being is actualized. We fulfill our own personal philosophy of infinite now and that's why I know that I know who I am in this world.

I studied philosophy for myself, read nietzsche, dostojewski, sarte, kierkegaard and so on! I can highly recommend you to read "Life against Death by Norman O Brown. Brown studied freud, nietzsche and many others and wrote this book. Unfortunately he is not well known.. i would really love to see a video about this book.

Like many philosophers, he might have been diagnosed with non stereotypical high functioning autism. His existentialism and hyper empathy and his challenges in the social are further confirming that.
The autism spectrum is so wide today, I think the majority of people are, but especially those gifted and challenged.
Morbid fact: "Kierkegaard" (modern spelling "Kirkegård") is the Danish word for "cemetery".
