  • Jaafar Abdul Karim travels through one of the smallest countries in Europe: Malta. The Romans, the Arabs, the British and the French have all left their mark here. A sunny country with a multicultural heritage.
Jaafar Abdul Karim starts his journey in the capital, Valetta. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city has been extensively restored and renovated. Architect Konrad Buhagiar played a major role in this. He shows Jaafar Valetta's most beautiful places, where old and new architecture come together.
In Siggiewi, the presenter meets Marilu Vella and the two cook a very special local dish: pastizzi. The dumplings are a favorite snack of the Maltese.
The island nation has been a member of the EU since 2008. And here - in a tax haven - people like to show off what they've got. But Malta also has its dark sides: At the end of 2017, a murder shook Maltese politics and plunged the country into a crisis. Journalist Daphne Galizia uncovered one of Malta's biggest corruption scandals. Shortly after, she was the victim of a car bomb.
Deeply shaken by this story, Jaafar takes the ferry to Gozo. The second largest island in the Maltese archipelago is only 14 kilometers long, but it has two large opera houses. Jaafar Abdul Karim finds out why from the artistic director John Galea.
This Mediterranean island is one of the sad hotspots in the refugee crisis. Tens of thousands of people have drowned in recent years trying to reach Europe. Time and again, ships that have rescued survivors from the Mediterranean dock there. Jaafar Abdul Karim talks to survivors and Maltese photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi, who has captured moments of the refugee drama in pictures.

Actually, Malta have been a member of the EU since 2004, not 2008. We started using the euro (€) in 2008.

Hi @Sean Schranz, thanks for watching and pointing this out. As you correctly state, Malta became a member of the European Union in 2004 and has been a Euro area member since 2008. We apologize for the mistake and any issues it may have caused.

We've been to Malta and Gozo for two weeks with my wife five years ago. The islands were almost empties of people (in March). This trip is still one of our best memories. We loved everything in this wonderful country : the streets, the monuments, the food (risotto rabbit 😋), the language, the hills, the shore, Valetta and its walls and of course the locals ! Thanks a lot and long life to Malta !

Valetta was founded by the Order of St John of Jerusalem, not by 'the crusaders.'

The Order of the knights of St. John or Knights Hospitallers as they were also known, where part of the crusades, first as hospitallers who later became warrior knights...so calling the order crusaders is also correct...altough as you rightly pointed out Valletta was built when the crusades were over by around 3 centuries before.

@DWDocumentary the immense density of the population, but I still felt I had space. The people were extremely hospitable and pragmatic. On my departing flight on Air Malta, we were stuck on the tarmac for an hour, and a passenger suffered a panic attack and started running up and down the aisle. This was a few years after 9/11, and as an American, I knew the situation would end with the plane deboarding for security and possibly canceling the flight. To my pleasant surprise, the pilot simply dropped off the crazed passenger at the nearest gangway, and we took off!!!

I went to Malta for holiday. It's really a tiny place.I was in Mosta,in the middle of Malta.I didn't go to Gozo that time. And I think that is a wonderful country. The only thing is,it's too small for living.

Wonderful and unique country. Within in 25 minutes you have talked about many issues. By showing the uniqueness you have discussed biggest problems like migration, freedom of expression etc. In the starting you showed a beautiful journalist called Sineb El Masrar. Later on there she is not shown. Even in the titles also her name not appeared. One more thing is if you have talked about how they get food? Do they have agriculture? How the government is elected ? it will be some more interesting. Being a journalist ( from India) at the end of the documentary i got these questions. Overall it is a good documentary. Thanks for the wonderful insights Jaffer Bhai.

34 years ago a priest from Malta visited me in Panatnikhom, a refugee camp in Thailand. After he left, he sent me a postcard of Malta. I'd kept it for decades, but somehow lost it a few years ago. And just yesterday I went to look for it, but couldn't locate it. I wanted to pay the priest a visit... but...

GOOD VIDEO ABOUT MY BEAUTIFUL & UNIQUE MALTA 🇲🇹 ♥. One has to realise that MALTA, for it's size, is the most historic place on earth ⚔ 🛡. Also, MALTA punches well above it's size in a socio /economic perspective.
