      You “can” but there’s a better method using a credit/debit/gift card, cut the main piece into a diamond shape (two thirds to one third) and cut the fan blade on the middle two-thirds part without breaking the edge of it, and there you go

    Hi, I have decided that I want to make a jaw harp and since it seems you are pretty good at making them, you seem like the best source of measurements. I was wondering how long is the steel rod before you bend it, and where the bend joints are located?

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  5 лет назад +7

      This will vary according to the way that you are bending it. The radius that the bend is made on and what you want as a finished harp. The measurements and radius may be different for you as you may be bending it at a different radius or angle and your bending method may differ. What I suggest is to make a few bends in your metal. To see how it goes. Look at the way it is bending and working in your scenario. Then draw a harp. Draw it similar to the same dimension as you want it. Take some measurements and cut the stock to the total length of the drawing. Then mark out the bends. Then make the bends in the most logical order and see how you end up. Look at the finished frame. See and note where you want to make changes and adjustments. Then make a new frame. You will likely fail a lot, I did. It will also be a unique and individual experience with much frustration and also reward. Enjoy the journey into harpmaking.

      @@bebbcorpharpery7331 the time to make these goes to show how difficult it would be to make a living and earning a decent wage. I once tried getting into flute and whistle making (for Irish traditional music). I got quite a few good instruments made but considering how much time it takes - I'd have to charge far too high of a price to make it worth the effort of actually selling them and making a profession out of it.
      But at least now I can make a good flute out of some aluminum pipe, a piece of acrylic (for the mouthpiece), a plastic whine cork and some screws 😂.
      I might have to try my hand at making a jaw harp one day. Already got a decent work shop anyway. Thanks for the video and great content 😊.

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  Год назад +2

    • @iam1smiley1
      @iam1smiley1 Год назад +1

      @@bebbcorpharpery7331 exactly 💯! These instruments are labour's of love, most people who make them could work in a welding or metalworking shop and make more money on bigger projects with less transactions/time and make better money at the end of the day.

    • @MrSeedi76
      @MrSeedi76 Год назад

      @@bebbcorpharpery7331 that wasn't my point. I'm aware of that. I'm not living in Siberia.
      My point is that you can't make a living by making them here IN THE WEST. Because you'd have to charge too much money.
      Just like other instruments that are cheaper to make elsewhere like China.
      Or cheaper to be 3D-printed than handmade.

    So when you decided to start building jaw harps, did you already own some or many of these tools (some of them are pretty intense!) for another purpose or did you invest in them specifically for this?
    And is this something that requires an investment in some big tools right from the start or can you get by with the bare minimum (and doing lots by hand) and slowly build up an arsenal of machines to make things easier / cut down time?

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331

    How did you make that harp?

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  7 лет назад +10

      Ok here goes. First i measure out the length of square stock that I use for the frame. I then cut it using bolt cutters. After that I grind, bevel, and wire finish both ends. Then I mark bend points on the square metal stock. Then I make the outward bends of the harp. After that I make the inward bends wrapping the two outward bends around until they are almost parallel with each other. After that I put it in a vise and tweak around on the frame and arms until everything is even and looking how I want. Then I grind and taper the ends that will go in the mouth and also do some decorative filings to the frame and also smooth up any roughness with a wire wheel. Then I use a large four square file to sharpen and true up my embouchures. Then I take measurements of the embouchures and cut a reed out of spring steel to match my embouchures. Then I grind the reed to sharpen it so it will cut the air. Then I debar and hone the reed on a whetstone. Then I strop the reed on a soft wood surface. Next I cut and file a channel in my frame to hold the reed . Then I slide the reed in like a puzzle piece and tap it in with a hammer to set it. Then I use a press to crimp the reed and finish setting the reed with a hammer and punch atop a piece of railroad track on my bench. Then I roughly true up the frame arms with the reed. Next I dull the reed sticking out past the frame with some small whetstones which will become my trigger. Next I make my bend with a pair of pliers and needle nose pliers while holding the harp over a candle to heat up the area being bent. Many times I will also heat up the tip of the trigger and form a loop on the trigger then I quench the reed in water to cool it and re-harden the area that I heated to form the loop. Then I finish the harp, in a food safe way. I do not tell anyone my finishing process, but the harp emerges the next day looking sheen with different colors of patterns on it. One person describes that my finish looks like, "The patterns on a northern pike fish." I think it looks pretty cool. After finish I make my final adjustments to the frames and reed to get the sound that I want. Then I mail it off to the person that I made the harp for. I am about six weeks out on harp builds for customers and I make harps for people based on what they want and also what will compliment their playing style. That was a novel and I think that I successfully overused the word, "Then." lol.

      @bebbcorpharpery7331  7 лет назад

      Sam L It definitely has a learning curve to it. I have butchered tons of harps since I hve started. Now I am getting more consistent and high quality results.

    • @saml7610
      @saml7610 7 лет назад

      My main issue is I'm looking for a certain "depth" of sound, preferring lower octaves for what I would like to use a jaw harp for. I can't quite seem to mirror the sound the Glazyrins and i think that's because of a specific temper in the steel used for the reed that I can't identify yet. It definitely has to do with long, fairly low hardness notched arms, coupled with a high hardness springy reeds inside that cavitating space. It induces low frequency vibrations in the arms, but right now I think I'm making one piece too hard or too soft.

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  7 лет назад +2

      It is the grind of the frames. They are flat on one side and sloped on the other givea it an outer spacey sound. If you want lower tone increase length, decrease width, and leave more meat on the trigger. Also the four planes of a harp are very important. I will make a video for you explaining this weekend.
