    As long as it keeps you quilting buy what you can afford. More important that it does not have a loose weave that looks like burlap looks. As for expensive fabric feeling better . I have paid a lot and after it is washed all the fancy sizings and finishes wash out that fabric was wrinkly and rough to the touch. Just stick with what you like on sight and fits your budget, and keep quilting.

    • @sadiejosiemom
      @sadiejosiemom Год назад +14

      I was going to say pretty much exactly what you did. And I'll add, that not all quilt shop fabrics are equal. Many of them are rough to start with, while many are like silk. But as you said, once you wash them and dry them - the washer/dryer can be the great equalizer. I recently stopped following a wel known fabric designer and youtuber who very recently commented that quilters should only purchase their fabrics from a quilt shop. It turned me off so that I just unsubscribed from her. The gall!

    • @gamadebdegamadebde
      @gamadebdegamadebde Год назад +13

      @@sadiejosiemom yes, yes, I agree. One of my first quilt teachers told us to by what we like AND remember we pay for both sides of fabrics so if you like the back better then turn it over. This was before one sided digital prints. If we only listened to self named experts the quilting by machine of the 80's never would have brought so many of us back to quilting.

      So glad to see this video! I have bought some of the Pioneer Woman fabric and was hoping it is decent quality after washing. How much did you use in this quilt? And what size is the quilt? I have bought one bundle of fat quarters, from Walmart, of her line. Did you find yardage as well? I wasn’t sure if the backing is her fabrics as well.Thanks again!

    I used many Walmart fabrics to make clothes for my kids when they were little. If their fabric can survive toddler playtime and be passed down several times, I'm fine using it in a quilt. Bonus: it's fun to use the scraps in their quilts 29 plus years later.
    When I was a new quilter, I took a class from a quilter who won a best of show at Houston. She said all fabric was fair game. Use what you love and don't be afraid to include a little something weird in your quilts. All of her quilts had a little bit of skeleton fabric in them. 🤣

    That quilt turned out beautifully! Hopefully it will hold up just like any other quilt. Sometimes it all depends on how rough you are with them. I've made my oldest son a few quilts (one was BEAUTIFUL fabric done with all "y" seams) and his dogs have basically ruined them all. It really hurt my feelings that they let their dogs ruin that "y" seam quilt because the fabric was expensive and I put so much work into it. I had no idea that they would let their dogs pretty much ruin the quilt. I thought I raised him better than that - I really did. Guess not. I know better now and I won't give them anything that I really love and used expensive fabrics in. Nope. Too bad for them.

      That's how I feel about giving things to people who demonstrate that they don't appreciate or maybe don't understand what kind of commitment it takes to make a good quilt. If you wreck or misuse one of my creations, it's the last one you'll ever see from me. I'll buy you a crappy China-made quilt if you don't know the difference.

    • @maureenkearns5376
      @maureenkearns5376 Год назад +9

      And I am just the opposite of both of you. When I give something to somebody what they do with it it’s up to them. I know his previous dog and cat laid all over the quilts I gave him, and I am sure his current cat lays on the quilt. I gave it from my heart, and he enjoys it, and that’s all that matters to me. My daughter, who married a multi millionaire, put the quilt I gave her for the baby in storage within minutes after I gave it to her as a gift, and that evening went out and bought two quilts made in China at her fancy shop, and that was the last quilt she got. That quilt has never come out of storage. That hurt my heart a great deal. My son does use the quilts I’ve made him and loves. them.

    • @jkoucheki
      @jkoucheki Год назад +3

      @@maureenkearns5376 I would normally be the same. I give it away and you can do what you want with it. It was just disappointing because it was my son. I wanted him to use it, but I just didn't expect him to let his big dogs ruin it. Oh well. Water under the bridge. I have given him other quilts and I don't care what he does with them. It was just that one quilt was special.

      Boy! A quilt with “y” seams is difficult and time consuming to make. Don’t blame you for being upset. Seems wise to give him quilts that are fast and easy, since he is so hard on them, and goes through them so quickly. It is nice that he uses them and gets pleasure from them. Just too bad his dogs do too!

      I would have ruined my last quilt but a happy accident saved it.
      I used some Walmart basics brand fabric since I usually do not wash before I piece I had no clue how it would act in water.
      My pup jumped up wanting attention and spilt my water all over a finished block… It immediately turned the white back ground fabric a very light shade of blue. At first I was so sad ,then realized what a blessing! The quilt was not put together I could fix it . I just pulled those blocks that had that fabric in it out and replaced them with new ones.
      Disaster averted thanks to my pup peewee.😊
