    My brother owned the X5SC-1. I flew it alot and crashed it alot also. It was a great drone and after a while I made the camera (which for standards at the time, came to my pleasure) work. I have long since misplaced it, this tutorial brings back some memories.

    should I get the x5c or x5sw as my 1st quadcopter

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 лет назад

      +Dylan Kowalski I think the X5C would be better, since it has more durable landing legs, and you won't be using FPV while you learn anyway. But, my ultimate suggestion for beginners is this: ruclips.net/video/N4qJNgV0DGI/видео.html

    Thanks for this review. Now that Syma have addressed the 2 "issues" I had, by making the camera removable (as none of my quads have them) and the better battery compartment, I will definitely be adding one of these to my fleet.

    Awesome review! On the FPV version is there the possibility that when you're flying the drone a little far away, the wifi signal weakens and hence the footage worsens?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад

      +Shutter Authority Yes, absolutely.

    • @ShutterAuthority
      @ShutterAuthority 8 лет назад

      +Flyin' Ryan RC so would you recommend the non fpv version if uninterrupted footage is more important? And is the live feed useful to frame our shot? Rather is it possible to manage and control the flying as well as the framing?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад +1

      +Shutter Authority If you want decent footage I would absolutely avoid WiFi FPV, especially when the footage is recorded to the phone. Any WiFi interference will indeed interrupt the recorded footage. As for managing controlling and framing, that takes a good bit of flying experience, and is why I suggest that beginners do not start with aerial video, or FPV, and instead focus on learning to fly, and then moving on to those other things.

      +Flyin' Ryan RC hey Ryan, I just got mine today. Quick question: The battery charger which came with the quadcopter lights read when I connect the battery to it. And when I plug it into the computer's USB it remains red. Is this normal? I was expecting it to turn green if it charges. Also, it feels like there's a loose connection in the charger so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to expect.

  • @AVCampos81
    @AVCampos81 9 лет назад +3

    Thanks for the review! I couldn't find anywhere if the SW could do onboard recording, and you now showed it's really not for aerial photography. Actually, also not for FPV, due to latency and framerate...
    As for the SC-1, would you say its improvements over the older C-1 (I agree with you that headless doesn't count as "improvement") justify its increased price, or is the older C-1 a better deal for the money?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 лет назад +2

      ***** Flight-wise, the X5SC-1 and X5C-1 seem the same, and they use the same protocol. So it would just be the landing legs and battery compartment that would be different. If you have the X5C-1, there's little point in getting this too.

    any problems so far with these quadcopters? I am considering getting them but im worried that there might be some little problems ( e.g. motor failure ) after a number of flights. Thanks!

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 лет назад

      stereosrock100 All brushed motors will eventually fail. And, this hobby has a lot of little things like that which will require work, replacement, or repairs, so that's all just part of what you have to expect when getting into the hobby.

  • @excaliber808

    Thanks for the great video, just ordered an X5SW version and I can't wait to try the FPV after seeing this!
    If you guys want to mount a Go Pro to this style of quad, you need the Syma X8 series which is the same as this but larger and can carry a heavier payload (also a 2S LIPO) In fact, there is a version called the Syma X8G for around $200 on eBay that comes with a 1080P 'Go Pro' clone built in. For those who own a Go Pro, grab the X8 standard version (~$100 eBay) and mount your cam to it. It's worth mentioning the X8 is not as agile as the X5 series however it was designed as a filmography system more than a nimble flyer. If HD filming is your goal, the X8 is worth the extra money. For acro/beginners, the X5 is great!
    Cheers guys

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад

      +Anthony Odin (A.J.) I generally do not suggest carrying a GoPro with the X8, or any quad with brushed motors, as you will kill the motors very fast. I also don't suggest buying RCs off of eBay, as you can never trust the listings, so you never really know what you're getting, and sometimes the listings are flat-out fraudulent. I suggest buying from actual stores that at least somewhat specialize in selling RCs.

    • @excaliber808
      @excaliber808 8 лет назад

      +Flyin' Ryan RC
      I own an X8G and it comes with a Go Pro equivalent.. The motors work fine after heavy use and some crashing. I am an electronics tech I understand your point however a Go Pro is NOT a heavy enough payload to cause motor damage especially considering the X8G comes with a camera of the same size and weight. I also own a home made Arduino Multiwii based DJI F450 with Outrunner motors and it is obviously better suited for the payload however please do not presume the motors will fail on a device that was specifically made to carry the camera.. (the G in X8G stands for go pro. If my motors fail, I will stand corrected but I have had a great time filming with the X8.
      PS, I purchased all of my Symas off eBay and each one has worked as described; the X5C as well as the X8 series is still working as we speak..
      PS. Even IF the motors failed and I broke all 4, the point of the Syma series is the parts are dirt cheap.. New motors are $>5. :)

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад

      Anthony Odin Trust me, the GoPro is absolutely heavy enough to cause motor damage. And, the X8G camera is not a GoPro equivalent. It is roughly the same size, but much lighter, and not as good of video quality. I respect that you are an electronics tech, but I am an RC and quadcopter expert, and I absolutely know what I'm talking about when it comes to carrying GoPros with brushed motors. And, sure, they are cheap to replace, but some people don't want to waste the time doing so. And, if one should fail mid-flight, you could damage your costly GoPro, as well as possibly hurt someone or damage someone's property.

    • @excaliber808
      @excaliber808 8 лет назад

      Haha I am sure you are a 'Quadcopter Expert' but I actually write the software for flight controllers my friend, I have been to school for programming. Now I should clarify and give you credit, the X8G does not have a legitimate Go Pro, but you may not realize the G stands for Go Pro, which means the manufacturers include a Go Pro equivalent. Now I know it is not a true Hero cam but it is still much better video over the X5C which is what I was trying to recommend for those who kept asking for a Go Pro style setup under the Syma umbrella. I own the X8 my friend; along with hundreds of others that have indeed mounted slightly heavier payloads on the X8G including legitimate Hero 3s. Trust me as you said, I have asked multiple people that have used the Go pro and the motors are running strong. All brushed motors will burn out eventually. This X8G recommendation was for those looking for a better cam setup for cheap. :)

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад

      Anthony Odin I am not here to butt heads with you. Yes, of course the X8G camera is better than the X5C camera... there is no denying that. But it is nowhere near as heavy as a GoPro. But, please do not deny the fact that carrying a GoPro will kill the motors faster than normal. There is no reason to argue with me on this. I am not saying that means you shouldn't do it, but it is absolutely something worth mentioning when suggesting that someone carry a GoPro with brushed motors, mainly because of the safety issue I mentioned in my last comment.

    I purchased two X5C-1 models and one X5SW-1 directly from China. There must be multiple manufacturers. Each one has different directions and also requires different Android apps. Both of my X5C-1 units have wifi.
    My X5SW-1 has a touchy camera wire plug. If it barely wiggles I lose wifi.
    FYI, I bought an extra 5MP wifi camera which has the transmitter inside. I have not tried to swap cameras between models.

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  7 лет назад

      Not sure what you mean. Sounds like you might've bought some sort of clone or something. The X5C is a normal camera and does not have WiFi. The WiFi models have "W" in the title, like the X5SW. As for the apps, some of them are universal, so you might actually find that either app would work with either model.

    Got this for Christmas and just recently was able to take it outside (darn Old Man Winter). Flies great but watch out for the wind. With the prop guards on it didn't take much of a breeze to make flying very difficult. I would assume flying without the prop guards it would perform a bit better in that regard..? Otherwise I'm very happy with this quadcopter. Thanks for the review.

    As you probably noticed ive recently subbed and been watching a lot of your other videos. Does syma make one in this size that's more of a stripper I.e. no camera? Is that the x5c. Does it have the ability to handle a beginner like me but also would also be a faster flyer when my skills grow into it? Thank you for the reply

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 лет назад

      +mzondi1970 Syma is very focused on the "entry-level" market, so none of their quads are very aggressive or sporty flyers. They are good for getting started, but don't really grow with the pilot beyond that. It's something I wish they'd change their business model on, because they make quality products... they just don't make them sporty enough for the more advanced flyers. The X5C can be decently sporty when all the accessories removed, and it should definitely be able to handle some gentle crashing while you learn. :)

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад

      I would suggest the X5SC, without streaming. WiFi FPV is not very reliable, and it can cause signal interference, and for a beginner, it would just complicate things. Plus the non-streaming version takes much better videos.

    Since you have both:
    Can you take the SD card camera from the older X5SC-1 and attach it to the X5SW while still being able to trigger it? I heard that the WIFI can cause crosstalk sometimes.

I do, though, have my eyes on the Blade Mach25, and may pick one up when it comes out. I know it's much more expensive, and probably not as good, as if I built one myself, but I think it would make for a more pertinent review and it looks great and would be an easy way for me to get a taste of FPV flying.

      Better in what way? I think my review made it pretty clear what the pros and cons of each are. The SC has a better camera, and the SW has WiFi FPV (which is fairly useless IMO). So, if you want a better quality camera, without FPV, get the SC. If you want WiFi FPV and a low quality camera, get the SW.

  • @TheAarowsmith

    Also you can buy a much higher HD resolution light weight camera with it's own battery. & buy a compact camera holder or compact gimbal. Some camera's come with a holder. Just use one or two Velcro long battery straps to hold the mount/gimbal on. Make sure camera & mount/gimbal do not hit ground with landing legs on. This drone will lift it using a 1200 mAh lipo main battery.

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  7 лет назад

      No way could this lift the weight of a gimbal and camera, and even if it could, you're just going to damage the motors. If you want that kind of camera platform, spend the money to get a proper brushless AV quad with GPS.

    • @TheAarowsmith
      @TheAarowsmith 7 лет назад +1

      Or just buy better coreless motors? Yes better to buy more expensive drone but I've seen really compact HD camera's very light weight with small compact cheap gimbal.

    I don't get yaw rates. It makes sense to me that every quad with "lo" and hi" rates would have two rates of yaw. If we can handle increased pitch, we can deal with increased yaw. And faster yaw definitely makes the quad sportier. I like my Symas, but that pokey yaw rate is frustrating.
    I have a little $17 quad that spins like a top so I doubt that it's any more expensive. Why do you think so many manufacturers hold back on the yaw rate?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 лет назад

      Powell Scott I agree! I would like to *at least* see the yaw change with the rates, even if it's still slow. I see no reason why the yaw does not change. I can understand a slower yaw on an aerial video quad, as it makes for smoother movement and filming. There are also some that think a slow yaw is better for beginners (I disagree though) and since Syma is going after the entry-level market, that could be their reasoning for the slower yaw rates.

      Lost Places That could probably carry a GoPro, but I wouldn't suggest it. Carrying that much extra weight with any quad with brushed motors will kill the motors fairly quickly. You're best off with brushless motors, and preferably GPS, if you want to carry a GoPro. I'd also strongly suggest being a well-experienced pilot before attempting to fly a model that size, and doing aerial videography.

      +Tukarama Headless mode is worthless. It is unreliable and only teaches bad habits, so don't even take that mode into consideration with what you buy. The X5SW camera is very low quality and I would not suggest it if you have any sort of professional use for the video. You might consider the new X5HC, as it has altitude hold, which will be much more helpful for a beginner than headless mode.

    Well, the wifi fpv performed as expected. I don't like the lag, and it gets pretty bad pretty fast.

      adipap13able Yep. WiFi FPV is sort of like the headless mode of the FPV world. lol

    Would you trust the x5sw flying over water?

      Sovann Levin Not particularly, but really it's your flying skills that you'd need to trust.

    Dothe x5sc/x5sw have to be registered?

      no their to light for that, but they will take a 1200mah battery pack giving about 18 mins of flying time,, nice huh? I have the 1200mah batteries in mine, but it may help if you get a sharp 25mm wood chisel and shave down the front to rear ribs inside the battery box by 2mm to give you more room to slid the bigger batteries in as they are a bit of a tight fit, I did this mod on mine as well, have fun

    Is it possible to tinker with this quads? I mean like changing to better props, motors. Just fooling around as a starting point in this hobby :)

      +Technoanus Not really. These cheaper RTF quads aren't really made to be upgraded, though you can replace parts. There just aren't really 'upgraded' parts available.

    Hi there, can you use 720 mah batteries for this and does it handle similar to the Syma x5c would you say ?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 лет назад

      If the 720mAh physically fits, and has the same plug type, sure. And yes, this flies pretty much exactly the same as the X5C.

      thanks! Can you also use the batteries from the X5c with these ?

      Spideystrat Yes, I believe they are the exact same batteries for the X5C and X5SC.
