  • According to the Treatment Advocacy Center, people with untreated severe mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed during an encounter with law enforcement than other civilians. Police departments across the country use crisis intervention teams to intercede with the mentally ill, but one department in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, has been singled out for its success. CBS News' Debra Alfarone reports.

We need this all over the country. FEDERALLY FUNDED.

Thus is so important and this type of approach is what we are fighting for when we say "defund the police". Redirect funds that are otherwise spent on military gear. I'd rather a department have a separate unit like this then have $75,000. spent on "Spot" from Boston Dynamics.

Even the people who spout this none sense can’t even agree on what defunding means. To some, it means reform the police, to others it means abolish, and others it means what it literally supposed to mean, take funds from police. There have been unprecedented increases in crime and mass exodus of officers leaving the profession due to a multitude of reasons. They are often understaffed and need more less lethal equipment such as tasers. The public has also have been demanding body cameras. How can a city with a police department with staffing shortages, increased crime, increased response times to 911 calls, and lacking additional training decide to “defund them” when such a things require more money? The most counter intuitive nonsense I have ever heard. In this video, this program is still apart of the police department so defunding this department would mean they can’t have such a program. Those they support defunding need to wake up from their make believe world.

@@Unknown024 police are not social workers or psychologist or mental health counselors. Some of the police officers are just coming out of high school and going to a 6 months training.
You can't put people who are not really equipped into position they are not trained for especially the department lack staffs. There is an increased of crimes because of people are under pressure, lack of work and being stuck inside. It's the same reason mental health is on the rise, it's the same reason drugs and other disease infections are on the rise. Why police officers need militarized weapons or equipments. If taxpayers don't want militarized police departments , the taxpayers have a right to demand changes. If someone is having a mental health issue and the police and the process the police kills the person. ..that's a crime.

Crazy? I am not sure crazy is really appropriate as a person is not to be labeled by their diagnosis anyway. The appropriate term would be a person with a mental illness. Just as those with a physical illness or physical disability are not labeled by their diagnosis or disability. It is not nice to label someone by something they have because that is not what defines a person.
Treat others as you would like to be treated. If you had an illness or disability, I am sure you would not like to be defined by that illness or disability as a person and definitely would not like to be defined by it in a slang version either such as "crazy".

@@Unknown024 Defunding means taking money from the police and giving it to social services. The police don't need as much money if they are just dealing with criminals, and by having mental health experts available to take that burden off them, both the police and people with mental health issues win!

What would this person have to achieve in order to stop worrying the state?

This should be nation wide! Police aren’t trained to handle those with mental issues. Specially in small towns with no mental health crisis units. Most get thrown in jails, which create money for the state, and court system. So until this happens all over the country, most will fall through the cracks in the system. They need help not incarceration

They have now charged him with BOGUS criminal charges and he's sitting in jail for the last 2 months. Pathetic cops have no accountability for their misconduct either. These 2 officers that showed up should be fired. Bodycam shows their complete lack of professionalism. Anne Arundel police dept says oh well they weren't trained 🤦🤦
