  • When someone's having a mental health crisis, what should they do? Who do they call? Increasingly it's the police and a Newsnight investigation reveals there's been a massive rise in mental health call-outs by people who’ve rung the police across the UK.
In Merseyside, mental-health related incidents have gone up 313% in 5 years.
Some police chiefs think it's down to lack of mental health services in the community and officers increasingly being seen as the first resort for people in a crisis.
Newsnight’s Sima Kotecha goes out with Merseyside Police and a mental health nurse to attend to a call. This report contains suicidal references.

The police have no business dealing with people suffering with "mental illness" who are people that actually need empathic care, and understanding in order to heal. This is sick.

This isn’t a surprise at the age of 19 I met an army server, finished hes course of duty, no after care for he’s mental health and was left homeless on the streets. Our governments in cause these issues by there own actions. It’s not just about services working smarter it’s about getting rid of the dead weight so the services can function as they need to be. Plenty of times I’ve taken people to a&e and rang police for people who’ve overdosed or people who’ve tried to kill another person, they all get the same treatment minus those who hurt others go to court, they all get a leaflet about there local mental health and sent on there way. Our systems aren’t doing there job no wonder the issue is worstenknf

That sort of comment shows a lot of ignorance. If you actually bothered to read my comment as a whole you’d of seen it’s clearly about our health system in pointing out and not about homelessness, homelessness is a symptom not the problem.

Fantastic work by the BBC to highlight the problem - more attention needs to be brought to the issue. However, I do not agree that vulnerable people can give permission to be filmed under these circumstances. This is someone in a mental health crisis - they are not capable of providing informed consent. Please consider this next time you film people in similar circumstances.

That said, I do believe a more thorough risk assessment and safeguarding concerns needed to be undertaken and all the facts surrounding the individuals history and current situation being taken into consideration to give informed consent rather than a none MH trained reporter asking someone at the moment of being in crisis whether they were okay with it or not. And that the individual should have been visited after filming and had a chance to watch the footage before it was aired

I agree the police should only get involved if the mentally Disturbed person is being violent or has attacked someone. The police are not baby sitters for the mentally ill. I think laws need to be put in place where the parents of the mentally disturbed either need to take responsibility for the care and up keep of their grown adult who has a Psychosis. A lot of parents and family members just abandon them which is an atrocious crime in my opinion. Ok they say that the son or daughter is encroaching on their life and their own mental health, I do understand that, however to just walk away and act like that son or daughter Doesn’t exist any more and they can just blatantly carry on with life as if these children never existed this should be a crime in my book. Ok so they are that mentally draining on the family then you need to take responsibility and get them into a good facility and if you are a good person and the family are good people than you can all put a little money toward he’s or hers accommodation in one of these facilities and visit these poor family members in these facilities to make sure they have everything they need . I don’t like family members who discard their own flesh and blood. So yes it’s not the job of law enforcement to do the job that deadbeat families should be responsible for. Shame on you families for shirking on to the police something that is your responsibility. 👎

    • @verzeda

You're seriously suggesting that parents of people suffering from mental health issues that abandon them would suddenly change their ways and start treating their kids well, what, because the POLICE FORCES THEM TO BE TOGETHER?
If they abandon their kids no amount of external pressure will make them suddenly become loving parents. They should have never had kids in the first place.
Hundreds of communal living centers with live-in psychiatrists, pharmacies, therapists, life coaches and job support workers needs to be built as soon as possible if you want to actually address this problem.

alot of these problems are due to accessibility issues to further develop as a person/individual, especially if you're lacking knowledge, contemporaries etc who can help guide the way , some people have it some don't, some manage to do it on their own some don't
Its the don'ts we are supposed to help , many variables as to why their life thus far hasn't progressed or they feel worthless or depressed because of sitting and doing nothing, allowing the mind to fester depressive thoughts instead of encouraging creativity, self learning, self growth
I believe free education on every level of any age whether unemployed or working , through tax , and for life , would serve, and allow quick transition into learning and gaining skills not only for the work force but for the individual in terms of self progression,
