Special report: Why living on the coast can take years off your life

- It seems like the perfect lifestyle.
Fresh sea air, no grinding daily commute into work and lower house prices.
But the realty can be somewhat different.
Health inequalities mean people are living 10 years less in some coastal towns.
Issues like addiction, mouldy housing stock, poverty and deprivation all pile pressure on local health facilities.
Adele Robinson spent time in Hastings speaking to those affected by the issues.

The title is ridiculous
I live on the coast and the fresh air from the sea is far better for me than the polluted air that I would breath in a large city.
Yeah but this whole article seems to be blaming the coast for all societal problems, doesn’t it? 😂
I lost both my parents through cancer of which they had no CHOICE. Hearing alcoholics talk about the effects of them choosing to fill their stomachs with beer and spirits and now suffer from cirrhosis and clog the nhs with their medical issues, is hard for me to fathom
Alcohol-related cost to National Health Service for £4½ billion a year
@@oliverdesvaux Addiction is not a choice.
@@northwestcoast but becoming an addict is a choice. Someone chooses to take too many drugs, then they become an addict.
@@fordprefect4345 how much does the government receive in taxes from alcohol traders? I'm sure it covers some of that NHS cost!
Tell me again what does this have to do with living on the coast?
I think sometimes entities want the “click” more than being logical about what they are presenting to the public based off of the title. They just want their advertising revenue to go up. Sad how this world is just attention oriented and not logical at all sometimes.
@@firsthistoric As soon as they didnt give a reason for the title within the first few seconds I dragged my skip bar to the end of the video and made a comment.
Lol well said
Coastal towns have been getting increasingly run down and neglected since the heyday of the British seaside holiday. Deprivation isn't a problem that's specific to seaside towns, but they are generally hotspots for it.
An EXCELLENT question, which I would directed at the numpty who did this report, as well as their boss
What does this have to do with the coast again?
I'm wondering that myself. I'm baffled.🤷
It has nothing to do with living on the coast, it has everything to do with poverty, deprivation and the resultant crime, drugs and alcohol problems that come with it. There are many reasons why coastal towns are often more deprived, a big part is likely the fact that many, many jobs are seasonal. Another reason is that coastal towns are often not well connected and within easy reach of major population centres, so they tend not to attract industries like warehousing and manufacturing. The weather also plays a part as things like wetter conditions and higher winds undoubtedly take a toll on buildings making repairs more expensive for both private and social landlords thereby pushing up rents. Coastal towns also, as the report does mention, often attract older people looking to retire who bring their health problems with them, skewing the health figures negatively.
Living on the coast has nothing to do with poor health on the contrary it's a better lifestyle. These people would have problems no matter where they lived
Walk a mile in their shoes
your right , idk why they labelled it coastal living but the mildew and salty air is a effect of living near the coast , as far as poverty i know for a fact there is that inland over there aswell and i never been to england.
Wear a mask
agreed
Agreed
Never have I ever experienced damp and mould in multiple properties like the UK, its a chronic countrywide issue
there are MUSHROOMS! INSIDE! WTF?!?!?!
I don't think iv lived anywhere that has not had mold
That house growing mushrooms should be demolished ASAP 😢
When I was in UK. I saw empty boarded up streets under a constant grey sky, litter everywhere.
Homeless people sleeping in doorways. Opioid addicts out of their mind and women so drunk they urinated on the streets. It's a sad declined country
We only have ourself to blame. I’m hoping to go into politics. I’m sick of the old ruining the youth’s lives. :-(
It’s nothing to do with geographical location, but lack of health care adequate housing and most coastal towns in the UK their economy is all geared up for the summer months only.
THE STATE OF THOSE FLATS ARE THE SAME AS ANY OTHER ROTTING FLAT FLAT IN THE UK, BOTH IN PRIVATE & SOCIAL HOUSING.
so? Go and do something about it rather than shouting into the void online.
I agree, it is a shame they cannot build walls like in Roman times to keep the poor away.
Poverty is Getting Worse in the UK 🇬🇧 Poverty is the Root Cause of all the Problems!!!
Nowhere does the video say why the coast leads to lower life expectancies. Reported for having an inaccurate caption.
🍹 🍺
I lived in Brighton and it was pretty much the same. It should be illegal to rent a flat in those conditions and the government should invest in the NHS rather than founding wars.
This has nothing to do with contemporary society. It's all the beach's fault 🙄...
😂😂😂
Yes.! Blame the coast for alcohol abuse 🤣
Always got to have an excuse! However it is very difficult in the country to keep your head above water.
Alcohol abuse is often related to poverty and the coast is like the third world.
So, it's the sea that's to blame?
Nemo did it.
I guess it was a catchy headline, but zero to do the actual reasons for poor health.
Don’t worry. The royal family are living their best lives.
I expected to see storms and erosion.
every documentary I watch, they always say the same thing, "one of the most deprived areas in the UK"
Fresh sea air is good though, much better than upland hill air sometimes.
salty air brah hypertension not good .
@ Doug. Not always true. Salty sea air exacerbates conditions like COPD, asthma, etc.
I live on the coast and I'm 111.
Sorry.. I'm ill.
So it is nothing to do with living on the coast but everything to do with unhealthy lifestyles lol
Addiction is not an unhealthy lifestyle, it's a common human reaction to trauma and neglect, something which is depressingly common in our formerly-great seaside towns.
@@TheSlinq Technically it would be an unhealthy lifestyle. Not everyone who suffers trauma turns to addiction, but it's and understandable choice why someone would go down that road.
Special report: drinking and smoking excessively can take years off your life
Stop drinking. Blame everything but the person that started drinking .
Live in those circumstances . Make anyone drown their sorrows
Typical response to someone who doesn’t understand and thinks they’re better than everyone else. Stick your stigma, judgement and hypocrisy where the sun doesn’t shine
Your gov wont put them up in warm hotels...they are full already!!
Drink and drugs is a problem up and down the country not just the coastal towns
Bournemouth is stunning Ive never once found any issue here and Ive lived here my whole life
Walk the streets at night then
@@thirdpigeon2676 Frequently do. It's a very safe place.
Indeed, Bournemouth is a stunning example of overdevelopment and declining facilities. The last straw for me was when BCP was set up. I was so pleased to sell up and leave Poole behind.
Don't crow about it or it will change
Bournemouth beach is stunning... as for the decline of the town itself, it’s hardly on a par with this or the Essex seaside towns
The Brits love their drink too much and will never give it up.
Yes. The drinking culture in the UK is worrying. I play no part in it. It's massively overrated.
It is incredibly worrying about the drinking culture in Britain
Lol well said
They need to just stop or have a lot less drinks 🍹
the King 🤩
@@LOL10060🖕
Misleading title- the coast itself is not killing people, local government and social problems are.
Thatcher emptied the cities to the coastal towns in the 80's. Perhaps those places and their people have never recovered.
No people went abroad for cheap package holidays
I went to Hastings for the day last year. How bloody depressing. Was like being in the twilight zone. Couldn't wait to get back to London. And that's saying something.
Dam 😮
Don't be an alcoholic or a drug addict basicly, as for the housing quality /black mold etc... that should be dealt with as a matter of urgency tbh if "health" is really important to the government/councils and not just an excuse for a powergrab eroding the freedoms & rights of the individual during a pandemic.
The seaside towns in U.K. are the most depressing places on earth. It’s as if the govt just lost interest on them
Bit of a sweeping statement.. I live in beautiful Dorset..Sandbanks is my nearest beach, heard of it?..in fact all the beaches on the South Coast are spectacular
In Spain the coastal town sells more alcohol than the city of London but u will never see an alcoholic in Spain. We need to stop blaming the sea for our self inflicted problems.
I don’t listen to Chris Whitby. Not forgotten his action during the pandemic lockdown.
Sea salt. Very dangerous.
Her drinking is down to lifestyle choice. My uncle died from alcohol.
Was going to buy another property in Hastings. The Hastings I know is a nostalgic reminder of childhood memories, and it's really not that bad.
What an absolute load of TOSH.
I lived in Thanet for 26 years. The coastal towns are beautiful and a God send to those who appreciate what they have to offer. Alcoholism and drug abuse is a problem nation wide.
The issue is the lack of industry. Government has left these towns to rot. Corruption within local councils is rife.
Corporations and globalisation have destroyed this nation along with the UN and WEF.
Chris Whitty in my opinion has absolutely no right to comment on anything about health given the lies he told over the last three years and and the same goes for sky news. I'm sick of the scare stories and lies.
Watching sky news does this to people.
For sure!!
Puzzled. What's the link between living on the coast and addiction / lack of healthcare / bad housing?
This title should say . Does drinking alcohol and drug addiction and smoking shorten life expectancy.
Absolutely nothing to do with the coast !
What a misleading headline
70 million UK residents:
3 billion in the war effort, gifted to the Ukrainians.
If it was going free that would be 3 million a head for all UK citizens?
So what is the definite reason?
The problems have nothing to do with living at the coastline.
Its a seaside town they forgot to close down 🎶every day is like Sunday, every day is silent and gray
Anne Marie needs HRT. Most women going through menopause have substance issues due to the symptoms. This is well known by doctors.
I think that is a load of rubbish, I live on the coast and it doesn't affect me negatively.
What a gloomy report. I live in Hastings and I had no idea it was that bad!
I was expecting irradiation from coastal nuclear plants or storms battering hardy townsfolk. But no, apparently the bottle is the reason and not one that's washed up on a beach either. This clickbait rubbish serves up nonsensical headlines. My family is full of alcoholic wasters and we're nowhere near the sea.
Excellent 👍 when the religion says Alcohol is prohibit people laugh at religion...
Suppose we should be great full we don’t have the same opioid problems as in the USA!
The gentleman who hasn’t seen his doctor in 5 years. That’s on him. Go to the doctor for an annual checkup. It’s FREE!!! NHS
It's a unique UK problem. They love a drink. I knew a colleague from Coventry; he and his wife would have a full bottle red every night.
Shock, horror. A WHOLE bottle between the two of them? My goodness
@@California265 it was...damn piss heads
It certainly isn't unique to the UK
@@California265says another wine-o .
It's true, while walking around the back streets just off the beachfront, people were just necking alcohol like it was going out of fashion. It was just surreal. I couldn't wait to get away from there. Thinking I was going to have a quaint little afternoon at Hastings. It was like a bloody madhouse. Its peoples mentality. So depressing...
the title misleading people. it's not because living on the coast. it's because people themself mental. some guys killed them selves bu their behavior -- love drug!
3:03 its only a year less but she makes it sound so bad.
People with addictions prefer coastal towns for some reason, Blackpool & Brighton are similar to Hastings
Where drug boats land?
This is absolutely true in rural coastal Oregon - all of it.
If alcohol tax had risen in line with cigarettes then this would no longer be an issue
I'm never going on holiday to any UK seaside town anymore.
When I last lived in England I lived in Chelsea, West London. If I ever move back to England I will fight tooth and nail to move back to Chelsea, West London. I come from Bristol originally and saw poverty there first hand. Not as bad as this though.😐
Don't ever go back to England, it's the third world now. But I agree, Chelsea is the only decent place in England I've been to.
@@alessandrovittorini6706 there is also chorley, lancashire.
Only Chelsea??? That’s a joke right there
Richmond, Twickenham, Kingston, Teddington, Wimbledon, Barnes, and other swathes of South West London are better than inner city Chelsea..
@@dechannigan2980 Richmond would be my second choice for sure.
How are they making the parallel between the coast and all these issues?...
I live in Hull. Is that technically coastal lol. 😂
Chris Whitty doesn't blink.... ever
I’m nhs Keyworker (dyslexic) I was Evicted on lockdown day @ 11am 24.03.2020 to A Lock up Garage By North Ayrshire Council…..
As I was Dealing with an Emergency at nhs Mental Health Gone…no help 24.03.2023 💀
I hear a whole lot of choices having consequences. Crazy....rocket science...
Is this because of mass unemployment during out of tourist season? Nothing to do for 8 months of the year? Is that the problem?
No, the problem is that people stopped taking seaside holidays in the UK in the 1970s, and since then our seaside towns have been in terminal decline.
Cheers 🍺
Whats living on the coast got to do with being a Alcoholic 😆
Nothing wrong with living there.people think if they go there things will be all good
alot of oil to fry a couple of eggs
What addictions got to do with geographical position. What a nonsense.
Was that the chief injector I saw?!
Stop looking after people who are coming in to this country and look after us for ONCE !!! 🤬🤬. They have free heating and gas living in hotels. God it makes my blood boil !!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬
Help me
Agreed they need to look after their own!! Send the buggers back, we can’t afford them!!
It's not one or the other, don't be fooled by divide and rule. Instead of heated pools and private spas, the government should be settling social inequality
I’m sorry, this isn’t funny at all, but these journalists are idiots, they literally are implying the ocean is contributing to this problem with this clickbait header, which is definitely not the topic. People with issues tend to reside there, and furthermore the government neglects the seaside, that’s a very different story. I feel like they choose these titles to purposely lessen the severity of this issue. Maybe this should be in the news more than a mother who was suicidal and went missing 👀
How many have died because of Chris Witty..?
Truly disgusting..!!
The FISH ROTS from the HEAD. And ANDREWS Opens MORE INJECTING ROOMS. THESE NEED HELP NOT MORE DRUGS.
Asthma pump? Jesus it’s an inhaler love!!
Whats wrong with pyjamas?
england = fun times.
So it’s the alcohol, smoking and drugs that’s the problem… not the coast 😂
Blaming the ocean for your drink and drug problems. Typical humans. Smh.
😂😂🤣🤣Sky love dibble
Off the nut they are 🤣 I see 1 man dressed as a flamingo's trying to take on 20 Segal's pissed on his Mr chips he was to mutch Drinking
i know what can fix all this loswer the age of sexual consent in that city it will change everything . i should say set the age for it back to what it was .
"Health inequality"?? Sounds like woke derangement syndrome 😛
Just move then
There is not much a government can do to some1 who wants to drink themselves to death. Its personal choice . I am 40 and I have never had alcohol in my life.
Poverty runs riot across HMP Plague Island when it is the sixth richest slave colony on the planet.
Britain had looted other countries
How are they allowed to spread such fake news?
The underlying cause is atheism. Religious people in much poorer countries are happier.
