Inside the police scheme helping people get mental health support

  • Police forces say they're spending too much time with people in crisis who'd be better off being cared for by mental health professionals.
That led Humberside Police to develop a scheme called Right Care Right Person, which triages calls to the appropriate services.
The government wants to roll it out nationwide - but mental health charities are worried there aren't enough guarantees it would be operated safely.

There is no decent mental health support in this country anyway.

When I worked in a mental health unit back in 1980 as a new nursing assistant we were told many patients reacted badly to anyone in uniform especially the police. Someone who is already paranoid and frightened and possibly hallucinating can be pushed into violent behaviour as they believe they are being kidnapped or imprisoned unjustly.

This is exactly what happened to me. I was held down on the floor convinced I was being attacked because 6 bright yellow police offers came storming at me while I was laid crying under a bench .
They simply do notbhave the correct training to approach these situations.

I’ve been clinically depressed now for 15+ years, and have suicidal thoughts all the time. But I’d never do that. It would hurt those around me too much. Even living a good 1,500 miles away from them. I just train my mind to deal with it, and try to talk to otters when I can. If needs be, I’ll literally talk to myself at home and it helps. But I don’t believe at ALL in the idea of popping a pill for things like depression. If I’m depressed, there are reasons that I AM depressed. I’m acutely aware of what those things are, I just don’t know how to fix them. But that’s my goal as far as fixing my depression. Not popping a pill. Physicians may say depression is from a “chemical imbalance”. That very well may be absolutely true, but that’s caused by circumstances or problems in your life. If you work on fixing those things and succeed, you won’t need a permanent artificial fix the rest of your life like a pill.

I may of never of had to deal with clinical depression like you have, but I have OCD + ADHD, I would never be able to cope and live a full like without medication, the field of psychiatry exists for a reason, just like other specialist doctors, its incredible you have so much willpower and its amazing that you feel like you are able to cope without medication, but I've seen people who literally can not get out of bed because of their depression, when you can no longer eat or shower because of it then at the end of the day Medication is needed, whether you agree with that or not, I know that in my personal experience no matter how good my life is going I can suffer a bout of ocd, its always there in the background. I just dont understand the ignorance you seem to have while actively suffering yourself.

This is another classic example of ‘pass the buck’ - however many long words you want to use to describe it. I appreciate police resources need to be available to deal with emergencies and crime, I would much prefer that, but I’m not sure this is the way forward. The example you witnessed - the community nurse couldn’t gain access to the house, so is the social worker going to gain forced entry then? No. That call will rebound to police or ambulance. If it rebounds to ambulance and fire, the police will record it as a success. In reality the response will cost double or triple to the taxpayer. More money being wasted on ‘new initiatives’ rather than being invested in boots on the ground doing the job itself. A shame.

Something I’ve found such a joke is why can’t police drive someone who is suicidal to a&e? I sadly had to call 999 once when my friend was attempting to jump in the road, behaving violently and experiencing what was psychosis and was told an ambulance would arrive in 4 HOURS! The closest a&e was a 15 minute drive max and there was only so much I was able to do in this situation, including risking my own life. The police arrived within 10 minutes and did nothing to help at all as well as lying to my face. I was begging them to take her to the hospital and was informed the met does not allow officers to take people to a&e in case they die in their vehicle?? They basically don’t want any paper work and don’t care it’s much dangerous to simply drive away from a situation as they don’t want it to be a problem. And that’s what they did, leaving me alone to deal with it. Luckily she is alive and well now.

It isnt the polices job to transport suicidal people to a and e. A and E is not the most appropriate place for people with mental health issues.

Mental health is such a wide range of cases and every individual experience with mental health is completey different. Police are to deal with crimes and its really disgusting that so much of their time is having to deal with something that they are not fully trained on. We need emergency service based on mental health patients, like paramedics etc . Our police have shown many times they are not capable of dealing with mental health when they are trained to arrest and detain.
Again its down to a government who would rather spend millions on art or sculptures but reduce budgets for emergency services.
They can spend £8 million a say on housing migrants but nothing on services to deal with our citizens

honestly i think if some are going to end their life is not alot you can do by the time it is realised, medication works for solving problems for the people who do not want to be in the world or can not fine a way or have had to many global lock downs and wars and multichannel tailored data experiments and are surrounded by their eminence if they are tortured enough its hard to stop them from ending it. my self i have wharf dales 18" and ev,s dual amps of very high quality and beautiful balance on all frequency 🤣 and this brings joy to many who! appreciate it when i see people down i (re)-mind they can always CHAIR up 🤣
