Hi Ron--I just discovered your site when I inquired about the D70 relevance today (3-15-24). My first DSLR was a D70s that came with experience via ebay in about 2009, and I discovered a whole new world out there for my interests. Sold that camera when I thought the grass was greener and picked up a D80. Then I spotted a D70 with sticky body and 327 actual shutter count about two years ago. The ebay reindeer delivered it to my doorstep and 20 minutes with Q-tip saturated with denatured alcohol and several doses to the sticky body and wala, no stickiness and a new 2004 camera appeared to me in 2022. Paired to the the Nikon 28-70 3.5-4.5 and 70-210 4.5-5.6 both "D" series lenses I have become a fair photographer. Those lenses were purchased new when they first became available and used on my N8008s film camera. Can you get better cameras and lenses, I suppose but you are correct, they are going to cost you more and that money could be better invested in shoe leather and gas.Enjoying your site. I have a few DX lenses that I use with them. The ones I have are the 18-55, 55-200 Kit Lenses, a 12-24 f/f AF-S, 50mm 1.8 AF, 24mm 2.8 AF-D, 70-210 AF Zoom all Nikon Glass.
I have a D70, D80, and D200 and the D200 is a gem, but the other two are very close. That is just a few of my camera bodies that I enjoy switching around on shoots. Thanks for sharing

You got some really nice results with that old camera. My Olympus EM1 from 2013 still gets a lot of use. Just because a new model comes out doesn’t mean the older camera becomes irrelevant.
I was a wedding and portrait photographer from the 1980s (film days) to the mid 2000s. My digital cameras back then were the Nikon D1X, D100 and the Fujifilm S-3 Pro. All cameras were around 6MP cameras. I sold prints to clients up to 20x24 inches using those cameras. My D1X (the most expensive one of the bunch!) quit working years ago, the D100 still works and the Fuji still takes pictures but the viewing screen doesn't work anymore (just like the film days). I never owned a D70 but I feel that it would be more than enough camera for most people, especially for the price you can get some of these older cameras for. :)
Small world. I started my digital journey with a D1X. Had to take out a loan to buy that 5k body back in 2000. I shot weddings with my D1X using a 17-35 f/2.8 and SB28 Flash Gun. That's all I used. Most prints I produced from that camera were 13x19 on an Epson 1470 Printer. Those were the fun days. I still have a D100 that works just fine along with the D70. I have a few vintage lenses like the 50 AF F/1.8, 70-210 f/4-5.6 Push Pull, and a 24mm AF-D f/2.8. Thanks for the comment. Regards, Ron
I was looking at some prints from my first Digital camera that had a CCD sensor. Lots of thing have improved FPS, resolution, view finders, displays. But image quality isn’t that far a head of my old 8MP CCD sensor. I produced nice images up to 8X10. Thanks for sharing Ron.
I am going to do some prints from the D200 files. I already had someone that like the look of a photo I posted on my FB Page and order one. I might be doing more with this D200.
Well, well, you are making me sound like a broken record! How so? I have had a few cameras in my time. They include the D70 (which took beautiful photos) D80, D200, D500, D750, D2x and D3. I may have missed some out of that list. I have a particular soft spot for the D70, only 6MP but beautiful rendered photos. I don’t want to send you down an Alice in Wonderland type rabbit hole but I also have a Zenza Bronica SQ 6x6 medium format film camera with the standard 80mm f2.8 lens and that takes superb shots… I really must get some 120 film…
Nice video, Ron. Glad you are reviewing your gifted D70. I love my D70s that I bought brand new when it was first released. I also have a D80 that I bought recently because of the CCD sensor. Just curious why you are using such a high shutter speed (1/250) when tripod mounted. I like that you are using f11 (the sweet spot for many Nikkor lenses). Personally, when I'm doing landscape photography, I set the ISO to the lowest setting (in this case ISO 200) and use Aperture Priority of f8 to f11 and let the camera pick the lowest shutter speed. As I'm sure you know, using the lowest ISO possible is extremely important on that 6.1MP sensor.
I'm using a d100 ($50 thrift after batteries and CF card) with a 60s nikkor-H 85mm 1.8 ($100 estate sale) and I think you hit the nail on the head. Old nikon (nippon kogaku) lens on a less old camera looks amazing and holds up for social media
Nice video. As someone who still shoots with DSLR's, D610,D700 and D800E, it never shocks me when I see videos like yours and it speaks to the abundant life and quality still left in the "old tech."

I still have my D70. My D200 is now sadly gone, so are my D300 & D7200 but I still have the D800 and D810. The best made camera amongst all these was my D200. Gem of a camera.
Yes, I might recharge the D70 and remind myself what a CCD image looks like. It it should be good for B&W photography I guess. Sadly I also sold my 17~55 F2.8. That was a truly Pro-grade Nikon lens from a time when Nikon made their lenses properly. I wonder if the VR function works on these old cameras? I know it works with my old F80 film camera.@@rdphoto2
I was pleased to watch this video and that because of the fact that it recognises something in it. I have rediscovered my Nikon D80 - also a really oldie - as a very useful body. Until a month back, I was moderately satisfied with the image quality. As it turns out now because of a low-quality lens (Tamron AF 18-200, F 3.5-6.3). Someone typed me to say goodbye to this lens and go for an AF-S Nikkor 55-200, 4.5 - 5.6. Recently purchased second hand for a reasonable price. To my surprise, the first try-outs show very satisfactory results. A golden tip, then.
I still have my old D70, a good camera with good image quality. I stopped using it because the WB was not very good anymore, especially indoors. And the camera body became sticky. Maybe I should try to clean that. But now, I enjoy my D5300 and newest D780.
@@rdphoto2 Thank you Ron, Sounds like good combo. I have the Robus 5570, with Robus ball head myself. Ball head is a beast. I’m not so pleased with the legs, and have recently been looking into Leofoto. I like the height of my 5570 however. Take care!
@@georgedavall9449 I have the Robus 5570 also. But I have an Acratech Ballhead I use. I also switch the ballhead out for a Gimbal I bought off ebay. I love this tripod for it's height. I also have a Leofoto LS-324C Ranger Series. This LeoFoto Tripod I use more than the Robus because it is lighter weight. Robus for Big Lenses mostly.
@@rdphoto2 Wow, what a coinkydink . 😃 I couldn’t quite tell what the ball head was, in the video, but it didn't look like a RRS? I have the big ROBUS ball head, on my 5570, and it works well. I used the LS 324 C briefly, but went with the LS 364 C. It does not have quite the height as the ROBUS, but it is STOUT! I have recently tried the ‘New’ LS Ranger ‘Pro line’ of tripods, and You might want to check them out?! Revised CF legs, water proof, metal twist locks, and 4 position leg stops. I deal directly with Leofoto USA, based out of Louisiana, and they are great to deal with. The little LS284 C Pro tripod and ball head, comes in right at 4#, and is very sturdy. Great for carrying on long hikes. I like how the center column is separate, and I use it only when I need it. I’m not quite 6’-3” and I usually only extend the bottom legs on the 5570 about 5 inches, and it works, and is much more stable, providing the terrain/ situation allows me to do so? If I’m on uneven or hilly ground, of course the legs are fully extended. But as ‘Thom Hogan’ says, it’s not always necessary to have a really tall tripod. With todays cameras having good real tilting or articulating LCD’s and better live view, it is not necessary to use the viewfinder in landscape photography. Of course, following BIF or wildlife, is a different matter. Just my thoughts and opinions…. Take care and stay safe and Happy Shooting!

Great. Glad it helped. In addition to the D70 I recently picked up a Nikon D200. It also has the CCD Sensor in it. But 10.1megapixels instead of 6.

I had the d70...and now the d70s...the card reader is picky at times...but still really good

There sure is. Picked up the D200 for $50 and got a D70 for free.

My D70 body became sticky. Alcohol clean it right up.
sold one d80 for 200€ recently 6000 clicks +/- 1 changed shutter with kit len 17-70dx and one old 50mm Buyed on new a6400
