TUI Boeing 757 Comes into Land SIDEWAYS in 40 KNOT CROSSWIND at Bristol Airport During a STORM

  • Strong winds blowing directly across the runway at Bristol Airport on the 12th October 2018 due to Storm Callum caused this TUI Airways Boeing 757-200 aircraft to come in nearly sideways. Aircraft need to compensate for the crosswind otherwise they will be blown off course, they do this by pointing their nose into the direction the wind is coming from, demonstrated perfectly by this crew. It is always fascinating to watch planes landing in strong crosswinds; the power of mother nature vs the skill and professionalism of the brilliant airline pilots.

    Brenda is an amazing pilot! I never get tired of seeing how incredible the human brain is when it is used in such remarkable situations as this. There is no substitute for the millisecond adjustments the brain makes using all the huge amount of information it is processing as she lands this plane with its precious cargo of passengers! Well done!

    • @soilsurvivor
      @soilsurvivor 5 лет назад +2

      She did precisely what they tell you NOT to do for crosswind landing. You're supposed to bank INTO the wind, applying opposite rudder to keep the fuselage aligned with the centerline.
      Crabbing all the way to the ground like that is a good way to collapse your landing gear. She's lucky she didn't wind up with a broken airplane and injured (or dead) passengers on the runway.

    • @JulianShagworthy
      @JulianShagworthy 4 года назад +12

      @@soilsurvivor You're talking utter drivel - there is no right or wrong way. If you're more comfortable with the bank into wind, you bank into wind. If you prefer the crab, you crab. Have you considered friction coefficient of a wet runway as part of the decision making process? Perhaps the captain decided against dropping the wing into wind due to gust factor? So many variables that you weren't there to witness.

    • @soilsurvivor
      @soilsurvivor 4 года назад +1

      @@JulianShagworthy Are you a pilot? (I am. This is how I was taught to do cross-wind landings, and so far as I know it's how all pilots are taught.) Alternatively, have you asked a pilot or pilot instructor?
      As for friction coefficient, that would only strengthen my argument. The bank into the wind uses the horizontal component of lift to counter the crosswind, thereby neutralizing lateral forces that might otherwise cause the plan to slide on the runway. While the same could be said of the lateral component of the plane's direction, upon touch down, the pilot needs to get the nose aligned fairly soon after the mains touch down. This introduces and additional torque vector which, added to the crosswind component, could result in the plane's longitudinal axis pivoting past the centerline on or before nose touchdown, which, on dry surface can result in collapsed nose gear, and on wet, slippery surface can result in the play fishtailing from the initial, lateral input of the wind, followed by (one would hope) corrective inputs by the PIC.
      When you "slip" (bank into wind with opposite rudder) a landing, you've got all the forces aligned with the plane's longitudinal axis, which is (or should be) parallel to and colinear with the runway centerline.

    • @JulianShagworthy
      @JulianShagworthy 4 года назад +2

      @@soilsurvivor On the contrary - in a slip, by very virtue of the definition of the term, the forces produce a net value that is NOT zero. You also increase your stall speed by an unknown value, not something desirable in gusty conditions! With a dropped wing in an aircraft the size of a 757, recovery must begin sooner than the crab method lest you put the wing onto the deck, so in some cases you can end up in the same situation anyway as you're carried downwind and towards the edge of the runway. In a crab, the aircraft is in aerodynamic balance, the stall speed is unaffected, and you can continue it down almost until touchdown before 'kicking it straight'. My point about runway friction was aimed at the lower stresses on the gear when wet perhaps contributing to the captain's decision.
      I'm playing devil's advocate here really in response to your adamance that one method is superior to another - the wing down method would most likely have worked a treat here when performed by somebody adept at it, but it is most certainly not the 'only' way, or 'preferred' way of dealing with crosswind landings. Some instructors do tout one method or the other because of personal preference (maybe something you have experienced?), but this is subjective and not based on any veritable evidence. It's whatever you're comfortable with and feel is appropriate at the time.

    • @soilsurvivor
      @soilsurvivor 4 года назад

      @@JulianShagworthy You didn't answer my question, and from both this and your reply, I gather you are NOT a pilot, or have forgotten any training you may have had in crosswind landings if you are.
      You are correct in saying stall speed increases (as it does anytime angle of bank is > 0. Saying that you cannot know how much it increases is not correct. Again, if you were a pilot, you'd know this. For instance, at 60 deg bank, your stall speed will be 2x straight/level stall speed.
      At lower wind speeds you can crab all the way down to the ground if that is your "preference". It's still sloppy. That isn't what this video is depicting, however. It is showing a landing in a large a/c in a stiff crosswind.
      What is debatable is whether or not it's proper to crab for the entire final approach. Again, that's not what we're talking about, here. You should NOT be in a crab on touch-down.
      Please read: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosswind_landing
      Or just look up "crosswind landing crab". You'll be hard pressed to find a link that says it's OK to touch down crabbed with a crosswind component that exceeds the a/c's zero-slip spec.
      Touching down in high wind with the a/c (and thus it's landing gear) unaligned with the runway centerline -- as we see happening in this video -- is simply bad practice and may result in a broken airplane and/or broken passengers.

      The main gear tires would skid in the direction the plane was heading. Straight down the runway. Watch the rudder at .44. You'll see it swing full-right, to straighten the nose out. This would turn the front wheels to the right, too. Or does that only happen when there is weight on them? I forget.
      This is a masterful landing. And video work!!! But no one dies when a video is shaky...

    We can all understand how great this landing was. The video is so eerie, like the plane is hovering. You don't really see it until the runway comes into view. Then, WOW! Full-right rudder saves the day! Someone will need a new set of wheels. And clean underwear?
    But I would really like to thank the photographer. Was this a professional shot? Perfectly framed! Camera phones show us things we'd never see otherwise, but it's so nice to see a professional (looking) video!

      The perfect point of view to appreciate in full that landing is the opposite end of the runway, not from the side like this case

    • @Statek63
      @Statek63 5 лет назад +3

      It was not that much - rather it's an effect of filming with a very long telephoto lens!

    • @HiyuMarten
      @HiyuMarten 5 лет назад +1

      It's actually more than 45 if you look - with the angle in the video, the telephoto lens makes it look like _less_ of an angle than it actually was :)

    • @Statek63
      @Statek63 5 лет назад +2

      Let me disagree :-) Telephoto lenses actually greatly dramatize such angles. The plane flies with it's nose pointing to the apparent wind direction. Just do the math: the landing speed is around 130-150 knots. Let's take 140 knots for this example. The sidewind is 40 knots. So tangens of the airplane's "crab" angle is 140/40 = 3.5 - that means that using cotangens function the angle comes out around 16 degrees ( 15.9 degrees ). Far from 45 degrees then, right ?
