I knew as soon as I saw the video of his performance at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2000 where he won the 1st prize. Since that time, I follow its various recitals and concerts. Superb. Has he ever done a recital which did not include a work by Chopin? It's been 23 was since he won the Chopin competition, and that composer is obviously his Bread & Butter, but IMO he should have done more since then to show the fulll range of his talent. Great as he is, Some people think of him as sort of a One Trick Pony.
@@bh1520 when learning a new piece and for practicing one should practice slow and "heavily" but in the case of mr li , he wasn't practicing but he did a very bad performance, which shows his lack of practice over the years. A great talent ruined
I used to be a fan of Yundi Li. Now grown up and a million listening of piano performances later, I don't like to listen to speed devils. There are tens of excellent recordings of this sonata that bring the joy of savoring its musicality. No need to be amazed at how fast some fingers can move. Such feats belong to a circus. Listen to the performance by Claudio Arrau at his 80 years, with twice the musical content than this rushed version. One interesting detail I notice in this video is the shape of Yundi's right palm (hypothenar muscles?): it looks swollen, like a super musculature grown from the incredible demands on the smaller fingers of a pianist's right hand.
