ironic, im away for 1wk. a fewe neighbors asked "would you like me to water your plants?" OH, NO THANK YOU. (id rather they die, so i cant blame you) lol. i prepared them well. i have no concerns. i arrive back home on Fri am. Loved the video. i agree, never get a plan sitter.
I just came back from a two week holiday. I had a plant sitter, but I also provided him with a detailed explanation on how to water my plants and colour coded them. The only plant that died was the strawberry on the balcony because of the intense heat wave we have. I'm not angry as I didn't keep up with the weather here and I told my sitter to just come once a week. All others are thriving. My orchid even bloomed when I came back ❤
Posting this video is perfect timing for me. I’m going a way for 3 weeks and I can’t rely on family to do the job. I’m pinning this video to remind me what to do! Thank you!
Thank you for these tips! I have to leave my plants for three weeks straight in the upcoming months, and these tips definitely help! Appreciate you a lot! 🌱
There are some nice tips in here. But there AC not only lowers the temperature, it dehumidifies the air as well which works counterproductive to the intented result. Thanks for your nice videos!
thanks bro, i use pot and saucer method, in the sauce i apply super absorbant polimer and as top dressing, i mix straws and hydrated almond gum jelly togeather
I spend a month on the coast every Summer and I need a plant sitter. Luckily my friend who got me into plants and gardening is the one who comes over once a week to mind my green babies. She knows much more about plants than me. But for weekly holidays I will definitely use your tips so thank you! Btw, my grow light came with a timer
Oh my goodness yes! I had someone water my plants last summer-I can still point out the leaves on my fiddle leaf that grew while I was gone, because they have edema spots from it being overwatered!
Thank you, i'm having family vacation every two years for three weeks. I will water the day before leaving and group my houseplants a bit away from the windows. Maybe water I'll ad water globes. The tomatoes on my balcony... Well. They will have a shorter season. 😭 Last year i had tomatoes until November!
The grow lights I have on timers are set to be on during the nighttime. Where I am (USA) electric company charges more money for daytime usage, plus I don’t have to buy extra night lights bc my grow lights are at night.
I never go on vacation but these tips are great for a forgetful person like me. I have a timer for my grow light and I've designed (poorly imo) a watering/fertilizer chart for my babies. Love your channel!
I wish I'd seen this sooner! I had to unload the contents of the kitchen into my sitting room, and forgot that my plants were on the other side, out of reach. The builders took longer than expected, now ive got some very sad plants. Hope they bounce back, theyre all getting a good drink tonight. I feel like an abusive parent.
Bonus tip, you can use smart plugs instead of timers, this way you can control it via the internet. If you combine it with a smart thermometer/humidity monitor you can control your lights remotely and in the worst case call someone to help
Hey just wanted to say love everything you do! 0:54, I think its actually better to soak a phlanopsis orchid for 10-15 minutes when watering around every week. it also benefits from being fertilized every week.
I do the same but I water only when the roots are silver or grey. I dilute my fertilizer to 1/4 of recommended dose. I flush with plain water every now and then to flush out any accumulated salts from the fertilizer.
Once I had a very bad experience with plant sitter. We has gone for 10 days and she never waterd the plants and only on 10th day she might have remembered to water...and we got out of cab , the amount of water she poured was flowing two floors down 😮😢
Lots of great tips! I'm sure I'll revisit this video before my next trip. Re: mulch, cedar chips are a great option since bugs like fungus gnats hate it.
I'm about to go out of town, and I plan to leave my thirstiest plants in my shower. That way, my mom can know which ones need water, and she can easily give them a drink.
My plant collection is as follows: cacti/ succulents, aroids, sanseveria, dracaena, and three peace lillies. Misc plants not included You get the gist, i dont like needy plants. If i watered everything before i left i could probably leave them for 3 weeks and be totally fine. Only about 7 plants in my 120+ collection would need active support
I was just thinking about this! I’m trying to grow a Chinese money plant to be cylindrical with all leaves facing out but this requires daily turning. I need a plant rotating device that works on a timer! Lol. So it rotates the plant 1/4 everyday
If you are technically skilled somewhat, you can get a small engine and an arduino to do the job. But there are probably cheaper and simpler options too - have a look at pet feeding stations, maybe you can make something out of one that has a rotating top to give access to different food portions in regular intervals
I water all my plants with vinegar and fertilize them with rock salt and they're thriving, so there's pretty much nothing some pesky plantsitter can do to them. I've only got time for tough plants, it's survival of the fittest round here. 💪
I have a maranta I think I've over watered. I know they like to be moist but the little guy went from having like 15 leaves down to two. I've pruned the roots, refreshed the soil with home made compost made of 5-ish years of leaf litter, with critter litter to sub for per-lite and given her more drainage. She was fertilized not long ago. Since I'm pretty sure I'm over watering her, I gave her a wick with a reservoir after watching this. Yay or nay, other thoughts? Let her drink on her own or pretend I'm a more responsible adult who can adjust the watering schedule myself? lol
I will be away for 40 days during August. I was kinda panicked that I'll leave my plants alone for so long. I bought a bunch of those cheap self watering systems that are just mini taps which you can put on empty plastic bottles where you can calculate and adjust the amount drops they drop per minute and with a formula you can calculate what you need. 1 drop per 48 sec is 1 liter per 10 days etc. But I'm arfraid that the way water will be entering the soil drop by drop will not be ideal and won't spread everywhere but just vertically. What do you think about that? Would the string method be better? The pros of this is at least you count the amount of water you were gonna put but you're purring it really really slowly.
Is that a lemon tree I spotted in the intro? I'm going away for two weeks later in October. I plan to water them before I go although they are succulents mostly so hopefully they should be okay. Maybe I'll return to a jungle...or super leggy plants I'll need to behead to reset the growth... I'm telling my Father to stay away from my plants! I have seen him watering the poor orchids every week!
I needed some sticky traps so thought I might as well use your amazon link, but the sticky traps you have linked are no longer available. Just thought you'd want to know.
@@SheffieldMadePlants thanks,my plants are doing well in pots and plant bags, I am trying to find ways to keep them watered when I am away, tried all these bottle hacks, none seem to be working, too fast or too slow

Do you age any tips on the monkey cup plant ? I’ve got one which I separated into two both growing upwards fine, I’ve got a pile too to support them but the cups don’t seem successful, I give it river water and keep it moist, and I think give it enough light ( I have grow lights too for use in darker areas) this years growth seems to have new leaves and it looks like there may. & some new cups it seems they never come to much. Any advice welcome. Thanks for the good information on plants I’ve learned alot bought things you’ve reccomended x
@2:26 Is that a nerve plant? If so, how do you get it to be so bushy? I tried to prune one of mine and it now looks awful. I put the cuttings in the soil after pruning it and they all failed.

Just as important: how to keep myself alive while my plants are away

I used your idea to cut the bottom third of the plant's roots. Wow. That worked fabulous. I also removed all stones. Great job! Thanks!

Good advice. I use wine bottles as water globes. And I plant my chia pets in the outdoor beds to use as ollas. They're fun. 🌄

“Smart” power strips are awesome. Half of the power strip plugs can be set on a schedule you set with a phone app.
