I had dreadlocks 3 years ago, I took them out after four months because my boyfriend at the time hated them. He was narcissistic and I was mentally abused by him. He made me feel so terrible about myself I took them out for him. Now I look back and think how on earth someone so horrible had so much power over me. My current boyfriend told me I looked gorgeous back then with them in. He quietly admired them back then and he encourages me to get some more because they make me HAPPY. He WANTS me happy. I did have problems with separating my dreadlocks from the roots, itchiness and sore scalp. However, I have always adored dreads from a very young age. I wanted them when I was early in my teens. I felt very confident with my dreadlocks and felt more myself. I'm hoping to get them back this year❤️

Good update to this topic! You were one of my go-to RUclipsrs for advice & whatnot while I was researching dreadlocks & deciding if they were for me. I only had mine a year, do to issues of a personal nature, but in that time, some of these advice topics were BIG deals! The length of time to dry --& the weight while they were wet drove me crazy! My boyfriend was somewhat supportive --in the "this is what I would do if I had them" kind of way; my way was the opposite of his opinion, so he always thought he was super supportive but he was always more frustrating than anything. My family HATED my dreadlocks & decided right at the beginning they would simply ignore them & anything I said about them. I also had some issues with dryness through the summer that about frayed my nerves to the breaking point!
All that said, I miss them immensely. My hair took quite a blow when I combed them out & while I had them I had half my head shaved, so I'm letting some time pass before installing a new set. Thanks for putting advice content out there, though. I'm doing more research while I grow out my hair so I won't have the same issues the next time around!

What’s fascinating is your what to consider for number one is why I got dreadlocks! I’ve always been super impulsive with my hair, but I’ve always wanted dreadlocks. So I made the jump to LEARN that patience- because that impulsivity is affecting other parts of my life. I had my first impulse the other day so I sat with my hair and maintained it. It helped so much. Dreadlocks are not only beautiful but they’re teaching me some amazing qualities.

I have half of my hair dreaded now... It has taken me a long time but it is sooo worth it. Mum isn't supportive at all... But, it makes me happy so she is slowly getting used to them... I recommend a microfibre or super quick drying towel to suck up extra moisture from them... And plenty of oils for the frizz :) thanks for inspiring me to do it though... I love all the new hairstyles I couldn't do before (I have baby fine hair) very good video, so informative 💞 ❤️ much love to you dear 🌻

I do renaissance festivals and am a pirate re-enactor. I’ve seen many different people wearing dreads and have wanted to try them out for myself for years. I’ve already had the sides of my head shaved for roughly 6 years and loved the dread hawk look. About a month ago I was finally able to afford my first set of synthetic locs - the kind that you braid in - and I LOVE them! I just got a new set of synthetic locs installed this past weekend. I’m seriously considering starting/getting real locs, but am unsure if I have the patience and commitment for them. So, for now, I’ll stick to the synthetic braid in ones. I’ve gotten many positive compliments from people of different races and backgrounds saying that I “rock them” or that I “wear them well”, and it makes me feel really good about myself. 😊

I love dreadlocks and I think it looks so beautiful. I totally respect every person letting them grow for so many years. I want dreads very bad, but I am not ready to commit to them. My hair grows super slow and it is very short. I love to change my style almost every month. So thank god there are synthetic dreads to braid in. I know that many dreadheads out there don’t like that because the journey of getting dreads is so much deeper and I totally respect that... but I’ll probably get real ones when my hair has grown longer.

Still love mine though, but I always think of my hair when I get a migraine starting (usually I think it's diet related though)... So no more (not as effective) head massages as a relief... You can use a pick though to massage your head/stimulate your scalp if you really wanted...

The Itch. Something most people here and me joke about. I live in a tropical climate, and in summer dreads are HOT and you sweat alot, especially at the back of the neck. The Itch can drive people crazy. Its like wearing a thick beanie all day every day. I've actually shaved my bottom 2 rows at the back of my head and that has made a huge difference.

Do you really have thin hair? Any texture of hair from straight to 4c can be thin or thick, as in amount/fullness of hair. If you mean that you have soft, straight hair as opposed to course hair, then you have “fine” textured hair and you can totally get dreads🤘🏻 fine hair is not necessarily thin, if you’re talking texture fine hair works well with the twist and rip method

well, your hair isn't necessarily going to brake if you brush them out. it depends on how and if you have maintained them with a crochet hook, bleached them and so on, and of course how you brush them out. if you are in a hurry you probably will brake a lot of hair in the process.

      Hi! :)
I work out quite a lot too, so it depends on your patience and how often you feel like washing your locks. If you sweat a lot, it will be necessary to actually wash them. I wash mine completely about 1 - 2 times a week. So when I've been working out in the gym I wash around my forehead and neck, when I've been at badminton practice I either wash it all, or put my long locks in a plactic bag, so that I only wash my scalp and the part of the locks that has touched my scalp. It is possible, but it all depends on you :) Thank you for the love.

I took mine out after 5 1/2 years. I loved them but it was time for a change. My reasons for taking them out was these: I missed the fresh smell from schampoo and conditioner when you washed your hair. My dreadlocks Always had a smell of nothing.. Like they didnt smell bad or nice, just hair.. I also wanted the feeling of running my fingers through my hair, I love that feeling! I never felt really pretty when I had dreads, like if I was going somewhere and wanted to look nice, even a strikt hairbun didnt give me the same feeling as when i have my undreaded hair in some fancy hairdo. Dreadlooks works perfectly in festivals or when you want to look cool but I wanted to feel "normal" and pretty sometimes. They also were getting very Heavy after 5 1/2 years of hair not leaving my head. I love that feeling of not carrying around all that hair anymore. Well, that was about it. I did love them though and I´m glad I made them in the first Place, but I probably wont get dreads again..

Love to hear your reasons, but just quickly wanted to mention, that there are many dread shampoos on the market that are lovely scented and will leave your hair with a lovely smell after washing 😇

Yes I know :) I used a Nag champa scented schampoo from Dollylocks that smelled nice but I wanted the usual schampoo smell :) I only washed my dreads like once a month so after the Nag champa smell vanished after a couple of days it just smelled like hair, never Dirty smelling, just plain hair-smell..

To all the people commenting that it’s cultural appropriation… you do realise locs go back through all of history within all races don’t you?
The Neanderthals, Vikings, Scottish, Cornish are a small example of a few white cultures/places that had them hundreds of not thousands of years ago.
EVERYONE’S hair matts when it is not brushed therefore it locs together this hairstyle was done sometimes out of necessity and for easy upkeep, sometimes for ceremonial reasons and other times just because it looks good.
It’s not appropriation you just don’t necessarily know its history within other cultures than your own, the same as someone outside your culture wouldn’t or shouldn’t claim to know it’s history within yours.
I wouldn’t claim I truly understand the cultural reason a Jamaican may loc his hair and the history behind his reasons the same as you shouldn’t if I were to within mine (for example).

Hmmm.. I don´t go with the opinion of...some jobs aren´t compatible with dreads...or what family or boy/girlfriend thinks...
Our society needs more tolerance and we dreadheads can be a part of this too. Acceptance for the difference of ppl would be great!
I am working for the federal state...I got the job with dreads. You need to know I have partial dreads but I never minded of showing them. My husband doesn´t like my dreads...and I dooon´t care xD cause it´s my hair.
Open minded society is the key of a healthy society.

    Hi Elise!
I would have to add that recently, sadly, I've received more and more comments that I'm culturally appropriating. It might depends where you are from and the colour of your skin, but if you are white, you might get targetted for having your hair in dreadlocks. I don't consider it a deal breaker, but it might be a huge drawback to some people who are considering getting dreadlocks.

I just took my dreads out. I had them for a year, they were super dense and hard, everyone thought that they were at least 2 years old. Anyway, it was a pain to brush it out, it took me 4 days. I'm a person that changes hair color often and it was much more difficult with dreads. My hair condition is awesome, my hair is now longer than my dreads were.

@@TheDamina1 I used very small crochet hook and I picked small amounts of hair at a time. And just pulled it out. From time to time I brushed the loose ends with a comb and that's it. Locs are a culture
1A hair takes longer to loc
Textured hair 3A-4C locs faster naturally without instant loc method although all hair can loc
This video must be for those of straight hair who has a harder time trying to loc that 1A hair
Having hair that defies gravity is a gift.
Throughout the history of loc culture Europeans never appeared.
