Thank you, Tom! What an illuminating advice. I just passed my comprehensive exam and am ready to embark on my dissertation field trip, this video made me decided that dissertations of other people's will be the major reading for me to do in the next few years.
This is excellent advice! Even for Engineering & Science students, reading dissertations at the early stage of the PhD journey would be very beneficial. I learned a lot from others' dissertations not only because of the writing, but also the details they provided to help me jump-start research projects. BTW I just defended my PhD dissertation last week at Stanford. I have watched all your videos, especially the "resting scholar face" one (>10 times I believe) lol. Thank you for all the advice on how PhD and academia work!
This is extremely valuable advice. Thank you!
