For all of RUclips's many, *_many_* failings, videos like these...lectures like these are why I keep coming back to this deeply flawed platform. Folks like you give me a reason to come back. You've restored some of my faith and respect for humanity. Thank you, David Hoffman.
david is man who has never understood how to "make big money" off youtube. and we are all the better for it. he is a relic of saner times imho. of those glorious days up to the 2010s, after when they started to turn this thing into a horrible money machine, where virality and hysterical loud insanity became favorited over meaningful content. david is one of these oldtime original youtubers (literally, the man joined youtube obviously in its first days)... he uploads for the sake of sharing - his work, his life, and things meaningful to him. youtube used to be about real people exchanging and learning with each other. as so many of us, i wish we could go back, but alas, we cant.
Quite a moving segment. They happened to change the policy in regard to saved messages by my phone provider while my mother was ill. I didnt realize until after she passed that they had erased all of her SAVED messages 😢. Then again certain musical pieces can bring me to tears so perhaps a blessing in disguise ☺️. Thank you very much Mr. Hoffman ✨
@MGMG-lc2fe Aww, I can relate, MG, though it's slightly different for me. I had my dad's messages on an old phone and changed carriers without saving them. I also have songs that he loved that bring me to tears. I hope you have a peaceful evening.😊💜
@StephanieJeanne Oh that's terrible too, at least I have the texts and memories still things companies could consider for their customers. You have a peaceful evening as well Ms Stephanie 💖🌞✨
I have produced videos before, and I used to like to say, based on my own observation, that the quality of the video will be judged by the quality of the audio. This is a great teaching tool for that concept. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I just loved this video, David. I have been in love with sound all my life. That’s probably why I became a musician. Whether it’s people talking, music, or nature, sound is glorious. This is a big reason why I love your videos. The rhythms and tones of the people who talk in them really get to me. Thank you so much for making your collection and work available to us. Be well. ❤
I knew what this man was saying was important right away. After my grandmother died, I dreamt of her and she was talking to me and I could hear her voice and for a long time, I could remember what her voice sounded like, but I’ve lost it now and I don’t know if we have her voice recorded anywhere. I think I have my grandfather‘s voice pretty well memorized. To have their voice somehow they’re alive in that moment the vibrations of their voice still live. My neighbor has passed away a few years ago and I’m so glad I had messages on my phone from her that were saved on it and when I go back and listen to itthere she is in that moment that was recorded talking to me. She lives again.
A beautiful piece. It brings to mind my grandmother, pulled out of school in the 8th grade in 1930 to help on the family cotton farm. She witnessed WWII and the sacrifices it required, receiving “commodities” (flour, cheese, peanut butter) to survive, man on the moon (watched it with her with foil on the tv rabbit ears) all of it with a life-long limp and pain from polio. But for her, the sound of hymns was the ever soothing constant of her life. She told of riding “over the mountain” in a horse drawn wagon all the way to seeing the beginnings of the internet in a single lifespan. I have to salute and respect her courage to face whatever new thing was coming next. Mamaw Nettie Laverne MacGowan Hall Brazeal, your ability to say, “Ok, what’s next? bring her up!”remains an inspiration, and the sound of her voice is real to me today.
As it sounds Brhadessi echoes deep deep down in heart, Glory to GOD in the highest heaven - with joyful tears sending our wishes especially my daughter to you David seeing you recovering well, remembering in our prayers, Good Day!
The most important single thing a content creator on RUclips can do is improve their sound quality. I have tried to tell that to dozens of RUclipsrs with bad sound, but they seldom listen 😂
Too much silence is not healthy. Even long ago, people made music with found objects. This is a wonderful video David and thanks from a person who loves sound--even the noise of a train takes me back to my childhood. ❤
I really think 🤔 doing it original is better. I could be mistaken though. But original means a lot and it is unique. Thanks David for sharing this story.
"I am just as deaf as I am blind. The problems of deafness are deeper and more complex, if not more important than those of blindness. Deafness is a much worse misfortune. For it means the loss of the most vital stimulus-- the sound of the voice that brings language, sets thoughts astir, and keeps us in the intellectual company of man." - Helen Keller
My mom had a whistle she would blow when I was outside too long. How could I forget? One day I lied and said I didn't hear it. That didn't go over well.😊 I was five.
I'm agreeable to much of your point here about sound's importance to communication (especially emotional communication). So, how about a little bit dealing with the relative importance of video/sight versus audio/hearing as it relates to security recordings such as CCTV, body cameras, vehicle cameras (dash cameras, side mirror and backup) and overhead drone video. For the overhead perspective most people are amazed by what you hear from a hot air balloon or from a high balcony in a relatively open area. What is the relative evidentiary value between the two modes?
Look at all the ink stamps he has hanging in the background, back when paper and typewriters were the thing. I think those are stamps.. Whoa the Atlantic city story, that was so personal for him to share
Gym. Tony picked up his recorder did something about how he felt so I suspect he'd the making many videos and radio spots and television if he was alive today
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Matt. 17:5 “While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” John 2:5 “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” Heart, hear, ear, earth (Matt. 12:40, the sign of the prophet Jonas) Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Blessings, family...
His son Anton has an interesting story! What instrument is more like the human voice than the saxophone? David, have you interviewed him? Would make a great companion piece.
I humbly request you reconsider using an AI thumbnail image for David’s videos. I know it can help with the algorithm, but a well chosen still from the video is a much more artistically genuine representation of his art. [EDIT: To clarify, I am recommending you NOT to use AI thumbnails. See my follow up comment.]
No. Just no. I think I understand the intention of... kindness but, no. It's not, won't be real. Real, in the true sense of the word, is important. Especially these days. ✌🏻
This is not AI generated, this was hand picked by me, from a still from the video, as you suggested. I don't know why you would think this is AI generated.
To clarify, I’m saying the AI thumbnail is bad. What I am seeing is a blue tinged image with 7 people sitting behind a variety of mixing boards and large screens with audio waveforms. It has a kind of high tech “cartoonish” look. There are a number of weird hallucinations that make it look AI generated. Is this the thumbnail you think is on your video? Or did RUclips somehow create a thumbnail that only I can see?

I enjoy listening to this man and his recordings. Thank you, David 😊🩵
more I listen to Tony Schwartz the more I can see why he was one of your mentors. This is an enjoyable piece.

Wow, that was great! I won't remove my Dad's voice from voice mail; even though we talk often.

100% agree, it's aggravating with poor sound I usually will click off the channel immediately
OMG. WE WHISTLED TOO. Never ever fails. Perfect in crouded places 👍🏽 We don't have the same ways of thinking & doing like before

Having worked on the flight deck of a aircraft carrier, I still check my 6 every time I hear a jet turbine!
Love this, thank you.
And may I suggest a backup recording somewhere safe? ❤️🕊️
Wonderful reminisces. Thanks David.
Love this Thank you David ❤

Funny how I’ve heard the great animation historian Michael Barrier assert the opposite, but I believe this man is right.
Wonderful video!

To hear behind the sound and speak without a voice
Yes. Yes and yes ❤️🕊️

Cant help but wonder what Tony would think of the world today?✌

@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker I suspect you're right David! 👍😉
Funny how all the electronics in the background are no longer used.

Everything has a frequency, the trick is to find it.
At 12:40 he is describing Face Time calls. He was a very creative thinking man.
Sound advice;-)
