EDG made an insane deep run at Masters Tokyo when no one expected China to even be on the map of decent teams. They upset teams like Navi, T1, and even LOUD tying for 5th overall in the event. Let's break down how they abuse defensive habits to win rounds on attack.

although KK unfortunately did not win at tokyos, im sure he entered many people's list of their favourite players. truly a treat to see that man with an OP

Another epic part of their attacking setup (especially on maps like Pearl) is how they simultaneously pressure both sides by showing presence - we saw this against Navi. While the simultaneous pressure might seem like a common practice, their timings are amazing which really bamboozle their opponents. I'm so glad you mentioned a little bit about timing here coz I noticed that too.
    Good video!

KangKang is honestly one of my top 10 favorite players now. He's insane mechanically and just seems like an amazing guy (hoping this doesn't age like milk)

EDG put up a good fight and surprisingly made it all the way to between loser semis or loser finals either way this was a pretty good run for Edward gaming.

Chinese teams still have to play a qualifier for Champions, so there's a very unlikely (but technically still possible) scenario where EDG don't make it

It's insane how now there are like 3-5 YT channels that talk abt valo strat. They all do quality content and yet they never have a lot of subscribers

    • @Nut-ey9ii

I think its just because they were late to the scene. Channels like sovereign guides and TMV were very quick to make pro breakdowns and guides that they get to seap the rewards
Not that these small channels wont suceed, it just means they need to work even harder since there's so much competition from bigger or similar channels

But cant this also go horribly wrong? EDG rotate around the map so often and so quietly (without using much util) that when the opposition team stays spread out in off angles EDG get caught off guard. I forgot who it was against, but on split there are so many tight angles that they struggled to clear, because EDG play so spread out and quietly (pushing on contact) they seemed to get caught off guard alot, leading to easy picks for the opposition. I feel like they didnt have a strong established default on that split map they lost and tried to contact their way onto sights with barely any util.
Basically when the defence didnt ever rotate and stayed in off angles holding sights, EDG seemed to overthink hits and allow picks to happen on various parts of the map.

Every playstyle has counterplay so yeah it can definitely go horribly wrong. Like you mention quiet contact sometimes gets you into bad positions if enemies are not anticipating a big fight and simply play off angles and don't rotate. It's all about reading your opponents and coming up with a plan and in these instances it was one of the most successful information denial + push baiting I saw in the tournament. Other teams have their own strengths and playstyles even though they have to utilize all styles to win (PRX insane aggression, Fnatic trap setups) and I thought this playstyle felt unique to EDG.

eg's discipline and prx's willingness to take fights are the most obvious counterstyles, but theres a weakness to every playstyle

youre giving them WAY too much credit on some of the smoke timings, you can have a vague idea of when to put up the smokes but they rely on luck too that the opposition dont peek on an off timing
