  • It was crazy enough driving my standard range F-150 Lightning on a British Columbia Tour, an ev truck adventure on a BC-wide roadtrip in Part One, but getting the nuts idea to keep driving for another 1,000 miles for no apparent reason other than someone asking me to - well, I might need my head examined.
    That's right. I took the smallest battery EV truck, the standard-range Ford F-150 Lightning XLT - on an epic ev road trip to see if I could close a minimum 2,500- mile loop East to West & North to South in record time!

    This was awesome. Look forward to your cross Canada trip. If you make it to Hawkesbury, Ontario I will come out to meet you. I know that Canadian Tire has a big FLO charger , not sure about the Ford Dealer across the street. Ontario seems to want to go all in on huge battery plants, but not so much on making it easier for citizens to purchase EVs or rapidly improve the public charging network. As a matter of fact an Ontario NDP MPP tried to put forward a bill to require that all new single home builds be set up for EV charging ( electrical and framing ) but the government squashed it saying that the $ 500 price tag was way too high to tack on to a $400,000 home. But if you make it to Quebec... there are public chargers everywhere.

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  2 месяца назад +1

      Every province that has incentives for the average working folk have the highest ev adoption rates - by huge margins. BC and Quebec are now in the neighbourhood of 20% of every new vehicle sold.
      Unfortunately, Ontario is lining itself up with Alberta and Saskatchewan for some kind of ideological regression in innovative technologies, and handcuffing the average Joe from living a more cost-effective and efficient lifestyle. Go figure.
      Crap! That almost sounded political! Now look what you've done ;-).
      I will most certainly be in Ontario. Not sure of my route yet. My plan is to hit Ottawa and the Montreal so Hawkesbury, I believe, is somewhere around there, if I recall?
      My planning has been slightly sidelined by intense fires and evacuations in my community, so I am leaving things a little open. However, If you can round up half a dozen like-minded Truck geeks (hehe) for a flexible date sometime in early-mid September if I leave in August, I will certainly add Hawkesbury to my itinerary (Trip launch might have to be pushed back to September from August).
      If that's of interest, and you would like me to set a Trucked Up Stop date in your community, email my channel at maplebayblues@gmail.com. I will provide a firm date in advance as things firm up.

    The Chevron chargers are made by the recently defunct Freewire Technologies. They have a 160kWh internal battery and a 20kW grid connection to minimize installation costs and avoid high voltage demand charges from the utility. They're a great idea on paper; if they had been deployed 4-8 at a time in rural areas as envisioned they'd be a great workaround to grid constraints. Unfortunately Chevron deployed them one or two at a time in the middle of urban areas so their batteries are constantly drained and provide an unreliable experience. This was excusable when they were free, but now that they're relatively expensive, it's not worth the hassle.

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  2 месяца назад

      Great summation!
      I was not aware that Freewire bought the farm. No surprise.
      Chevron will be paying twice as much to undo the mess it's created for itself, installing 'quick-fix', inferior systems that were obsolete before even powering up the first one.
      Another example of shareholder-influenced, quarter-over-quarter tactics vs. long-term, visionary strategy.

    Not sure if hybrids are the answer, seems Makes are taking advantage of incentives. Shouldn't there be a market for each & just let the consumers decide: petrol, diesel & ev (no ice). If a company survival depends upon it, competition will drive innovation. Great video

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  2 месяца назад

      Many disagree with incentives entirely.
      I'm of the mind that no vehicle that incorporates the burning of fossil fuels in any way should be incentivized. Oil & Gas, as well as the ICE auto industry already gets billions in incentives, so that's double-dipping.
      The whole premise for incentives was so that expensive electric options would be more affordable to everyone and to fast-track that innovation, just like it has done in oil and gas exploration, nuclear, and space flight.
      If that's not the case, I am all 100% with you. Scrap ALL incentives, and let the market duke it out.

    Sounds like that charging stations are dense enough that an attempt may be doable if I get a CCS-CHAdeMO adapter though.

      For now I have access to two ICE cars. May upgrade to 40kWh when the battery fails in 7-10 years (previous owner replaced it in 2021).
      Edit: checked Plugshare with a range of 80km.

    Thanks for the videos. Interested in a long range Lightning but the price is insane. I am curious why you dont have the Tesla adapter and use Tesla super charging?

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  2 месяца назад

      Great questions.
      1) Insane price of Lightning - where do you live? In Canada or US? It might make a difference in the price you can get.
      LOTS of less expensive options on the ext. range Lightnings. And the standard range qualifies for a whack of incentives in both countries. Still the cheapest EV Truck in the world, so there's that.
      2) Ford was the first to sign on with Tesla, and immediately informed all their current Lightning owners that they could apply to receive a free gift of the adapter. Then Tesla fired its entire supercharger team, and part of the adapter agreement was that Tesla make the adapters, I believe. In any case, only a handful of people have actually received their adapters. Mine was supposed to arrive in June. Now Ford is saying August.
      I might just say heck with it and buy a third party one Ford's gift doesn't arrive before my Canada-wide trip....But I'm cheap :-).

      @truckedupevs  2 месяца назад +1

      @@stanchorney9698 Hi Stan! You're not that far from my neck of the woods. Welcome again to the channel!
      Yeah, the big restriction in all of this is what Ford has done and what the Provincial and Federal Gov'ts have done - and both suck.
      The incentives are huge and awesome - $9,000 off the price in BC if both are combined - but both cap the limit at $70k, which means a Lightning Pro or XLT, standard range. The good news is you could own a brand new truck - the Pro, which has a ton of standard feature that would blow most people away if they knew they could get it all in for below $50k. I did a video on it here: ruclips.net/video/SGolY3awLgY/видео.html
      But go extended range and boom! Goodbye to nine grand.
      It makes no sense. The whole premise of incentives is to make these things more affordable - and then they cap a truck price that excludes almost every truck on the market. Go figure.
      This is the primary reason I bought the Std range XLT, paying $1400 less than I would of had I bought a V8 ICE XLT.
      If enough people complain by writing to Clean BC and the Federal Incentives plan (there's a link on the site), something might happen - and I'm hopeful that it will with ev trucks.
      But then Ford started restricting extended range on anything below the Flash, which starts at $79K. Dumb as a bag of nails. Sure hope Ram comes out with a reasonalbe priced work truck ev. We already know Chevy has priced itself $20K higher than the Pro for their base WT3 Silverado ev.
      One good note is that in most of Canada where incentives don't exist, especially in Saskatchewan and Alberta, you can score a used 22' Lightning or a new one by wrangling the dealer down, and getting below $70 for an extended range.
      It's possible, but a sh*tpile of work & research.
      Good luck, and thanks for the great comment!

    • @truckedupevs
      @truckedupevs  2 месяца назад

      Everything is metric, but until the mid 1970s we were 100% imperial still.
      Most individuals born after that date use metric for everything. We old farts hang on to imperial, along with a large portion of the real estate and construction industry since a large % of buyers and sellers still calculate in sq. ft and because a larger % of materials are still US based and measured. It is still easier to buy an imperial tape measure than a metric one. A large percentage of building materials still do not conform to metric standards. We buy '2x4s' and measure in ft for building because almost everything is cut that way.
      Old habits die hard. Many real estate listings now have both metric and imperial.
      I imagine there's a lot more to it than that but that's my take.
