Thank you for sharing some of your own story; this was a very enjoyable reaction. No matter how many times I watch this, I still get emotional. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 7 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on RUclips are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world.
Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).”
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great.
"The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," “War Pigs,” "My Generation," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo medical treatment for his multiple health issues, including surgeries.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren has hinted that he might release his newest song on March 29, which is his birthday.

It very much hit home for me. I'm dysthymic with severe comorbidity as they call it. It just means I've got multiple chronic illnesses, some quite painfull. NSAID's ruined my kidneys and I'm allergic to all opioids. Tylonol is a drop on a hot plate. I've lost my agility, most of my strenght and even part of mobility. Chronic illnesses influence eachother. Lots of meds don't combine well and cause new problems. Somatic and psychological problems influence eachother too. It's a mess. Ren found a way to express something healthy people do not understand in general. I don't like rap music, but a do make a few exceptions. Ren is one.
IRL nobody talks about psych trouble. Untill I say I'm dysthymic with double depression always round the corner (and explain what it is). Then all of a sudden, people have similar problems, or somebody they know in their family or friends has 'those problems'. And I have the luck I'm born in The Netherlands, where there is a social net. I do not have to pay my medical bills all by myself. All Dutch people together carry that weight. Can't imagine living in the US where you'll go bancrupt if you get sick.

Yes girl, i've seen quite a few reaction of "Hi Ren" and not many people noticed that the lights at the end are flickkering even tho is the "Good Ren" singing. I think like you that at the point is the evil and good part of him remergin together. He says it in the song "And you know how I know that I'll prosper? Because I stand here beside you today", also in the voice you can notice that is not nasal and scratchi like evil Ren nor scared as good Ren. End in the monolgue confirms it, remebering to us all that as human beings we have both sides, accept it and use this to make us stronger.

  • @FooDogDat
    @FooDogDat Год назад

Nice catch on the lights. Ren was misdiagnosed and had untreated Lyme Disease (the Easter Egg in this video is the 'L.D.' marked on the back of the wheelchair - no reactor has caught that yet).
Dysautonomia, POTS, Orthostatic Intolerance, hEDS, yes, add to that MCAS and a number of others, they seem to come for the ride for people with ME and can be an early indicator (MCAS often come later, perhaps due to leaky gut issues). You are not alone in this, and most take years to get a diagnosis if ever, and there aren't any good treatments.
The part that gets me Nikki in this song is 'The voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope,' it is because a good friend who I met on an ME Forum had a long chat with me days before he was found, and like Ren he had been misdiagnosed and likely had Lyme Disease, but never got proper care, instead abuse, he was in too much pain, lost 30 pounds as he could not keep food down.
This is why Ren's songs about his childhood friend hit hard as well, 'Suic*de' and 'For Joe,' those songs explain the title of his first album 'Freckled Angels.' Ren has songs about social justice as well, 'Money Game part I' and especially 'Money Game pat II' (recent release) seem to be trending.
Ren's and his cinematographer friend Samuel show off their skills best in their epic trilogy 'The Tale of Jenny & Screech + Violet's Tale,' watch the combo video with them together, in order.

When I first saw this video I was just listening to his voice and the guitar I thought he was messing up badly but I didn’t understand what was going on I knew about the demon side and the angel side but then when I heard it over and over again and again I understood why he did it like that way and why the music sounded so uneven, it was because it was supposed to be that way like there is something wrong with it and yes the music was perfect in every little detail and in every aspect of this song it is like he has put this song together and worked so hard for so many years that was it’s so powerful and so deep that it was hard for him to present it to the world that it became the most beautiful song in the world and it has inspire so many people and that so many can relate to it also and then he teaches us a lesson to never give up and that your not alone, he fights because it helped himself to be better, It might have been really hard to present this song when he tells us what he went through and then he teaches us a lesson from it. I’m proud of this guy for doing this video for all to here, he was brave and courageous and I would like to thank him for doing so. I’ll be praying for him as well for others to.🙏🏻 thank you REN.

    Hi there Ren
    It's been a little while
    Did you miss me?
You thought you’d buried me, didn't you? Risky…
    'Cause I always come back
    Deep down you know that
Deep down you know I'm always in periphery
Ren, aren't you pleased to see me?
It's been weeks since we spoke, bro, I know you need me
You’re the sheep, I'm the shepherd
Not your place to lead me
Not your place to be biting off the hand that feeds me
Hi Ren, I’ve been taking some time to be distant
I’ve been taking some time to be still
I've been taking some time to be by myself since my therapist told me I'm ill
And I've been making some progress lately, and I've learnt some new coping skills
So I haven't really needed you much, man
I think we need to just step back and chill
Ren, you sound more insane than I do
You think that those doctors are really there to guide you?
Been through this a million times
Your civilian mind is so perfect at always being lied to
    Okay, take another pill, boy!
Drown yourself in the sound of white noise
    Follow this ten-step program, rejoice!
All your problems will be gone! Fucking dumb boy
Nah, mate, this time it's different man, trust me
I feel like things might be falling in place
And my music's been kinda doing bits too
Like I actually might do something great
And when I'm gone, maybe I'll be remembered
For doing something special with myself
That's why I don't think that we should talk, man
'Cause when you're with me, it never seems to help
You think that you can amputate me?
I am you, you are me, you are I, I am we
We are one, split in two, that makes one, so you see:
You got to kill you if you wanna kill me
I'm not left over dinner, I’m not scraps on the side
Oh, your music is thriving? Delusional guy!
Where's your top ten hit? Where's your interview with Oprah?
Where are your Grammy's Ren? Nowhere!
Yeah, but, my music's not commercial like that
I never chased numbers, statistics or stats
I never write hooks for the radio
They never even play me, so why would I concern myself with that?
But my music is really connecting
And the people who find it respect it
    And for me, that's enough
‘Cause this life's been tough so it gives me a purpose I can rest in
    Man, you sound so pretentious!
Ren, your music is so self-centered
No one wants to hear another song about how much you hate yourself, trust me
You should be so lucky, having me inside you to guide you, remind you to manage expectations
Provide you perspective, that thing you neglected, I get it
You wanna be a big deal, next Jimi Hendrix? Forget it
    Man, it's not like that
Man, it's just like that, I'm inside you, you twat!
No, it's not, man you're wrong, when I write I belong
Let me break the fourth wall by acknowledging this song:
Ren sits down, has a stroke of genius
He wants to write a song that was not done previous
A battle with his subconscious, Eminem did it
Played on guitar? Plan B did it!
Man you're not original, you criminal, rip-off artist
The pinnacle of your success is stealing other people's material
Ren, mate, we've heard it all before
Oh, "She sells seashells on the sea shore"
Fuck you! I don't need you, I don't need to hear this
'Cause I'm fine by myself, I'm a genius!
And I will be great, and I will make waves, and I'll shake up the whole world beneath us
    That's right, speak your truth!
Your fucking god complex leaks out of you
It's refreshing to actually hear you say it!
    Instead of downplay it
“Ugh, music is all about the creative process and if people can find something to relate to within that, then that's just a bonus”
Fuck you! I'ma fucking kill you, Ren
Well, fucking kill me, then! Let's fucking have you, Ren
I'ma do it, watch me prove it, who are you to doubt my music?
‘Cause I call the shots, I choose if you die
Yeah, I call the shots and so I choose who survives
I'll tie you up in knots when I lock you inside
    [Bridge]
    News flash
I was created at the dawn of creation
    I am temptation
I am the snake in Eden
I am the reason for treason
Beheading all kings, I am sin with no rhyme or reason
Sun of the morning, Lucifer, Antichrist
    Father of lies, Mestophales
Truth in a blender, deceitful pretender
The banished avenger, the righteous surrender
When standing in front of my solar eclipse
My name, it is stitched to your lips, so you see
I won't bow to the will of a mortal, feeble and normal
You wanna kill me? I'm eternal, immortal
I live in every decision that catalysed chaos
    That causes division
I live inside death, the beginning of ends
I am you, you are me, I am you, Ren!
    [Verse 2]
Hi Ren, I’ve been taking some time to be distant
I’ve been taking some time to be still
I’ve been taking some time to be by myself and I've spent half my life ill
But just as sure as the tide starts turning
Just as sure as the night has dawn
Just as sure as the rainfall soon runs dry when you stand in an eye of a storm
I was made to be tested and twisted
I was made to be broken and beat
I was made by His hand, it's all part of His plan that I stand on my own two feet
And you know me, my will is eternal
And you know me, you've met me before
Face to face with a beast, I will rise from the east, and I'll settle on the ocean floor
And I go by many names also
Some people know me as hope
Some people know me as the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope
And you know how I know that I'll prosper?
'Cause I stand here beside you today
I have stood in the flames that cremated my brain and I didn't once flinch or shake
So cower at the man I've become
When I sing from the top of my lungs
That I won't retire, I'll stand in your fire
Inspire the meek to be strong
And when I am gone, I will rise
In the music that I left behind
    Ferocious, persistent, immortal like you
We’re a coin with two different sides
    [Outro]
    Ooooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh
    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh
    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh
    Ooooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh
    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh
    Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooh...
    [Spoken Outro]
When I was seventeen years old, I shouted out into an empty room, into a blank canvas that I would defeat the forces of evil
And for the next ten years of my life I suffered the consequences...
    With autoimmunity illness, and psychosis
As I got older, I realized there were no real winners and there were no real losers in psychological warfare
But there were victims and there were students
It wasn’t David versus Goliath, it was a pendulum
Eternally swaying from the dark to the light
And the more intensely that the light shone, the darker the shadow it casts
It was never really a battle for me to win, it was an eternal dance
And like a dance, the more rigid I became, the harder it got
The more I cursed my clumsy footsteps, the more I struggled
    So I got older
And I learned to relax, and I learned to soften, and that dance got easier
It is this eternal dance that separates human beings from angels, from demons, from gods
And I must not forget, we must not forget, that we are human beings

I'm posting this here as its more most recent video, so better chance you see it:
I mentioned this in a diff video, yet if you like female fronted go with:
    Ad Infinitum w/ Melisa Bonny.
    Eleine w/ Madeleine Liljistam.
Both of these talented women sing beautiful and melodic. Melisa does a little bit of harsh, but not too much for where you are at now.
Now, another suggestion from me is:
Arch Enemy with Alisa White Gluz, however, she does a lot of harsh/distorted vocals, so I think you should get more "used" to that before you go there. There is one song though where she sings mostly clean that I think you'll really like (kind of a balad with powerful vocals):
    Reason to Believe (Live): ruclips.net/video/0kJdWJXxF3Y/видео.html
Oh, I think since you like Brianna in Release the Archers I feel even strong you should check out Margarita Monet in the band Edge of Paradise "Digital Paradise"

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to your other comments - I'm still slowly working through them all so I would have seen it eventually but you're right - commenting again did push it to the top lol. I will add them all to my list. 😊
I think I'll add Edge of Paradise to the weekly poll tomorrow. For some reason it just stood out to me. 🤔But even if it doesn't win, I'll be sure to check them out on a future "Free For All Friday" video. 😁

The captions aren't correct.. Don't read those. That's the problem with "CC", if you're not hearing impaired, some people can't focus on everything else around them, rather just reading... To me, you did yourself a dis-service to this song. 1, reading the incorrect lyrics. 2, losing most awareness of the rest of what's going on in the video, because you were reading it.

another person who shouldn't be doing reaction videos. You can have just used a picture of yourself instead of video. Your face was absolutely blank... no joy, surprise, curiosity ... nothing. Reaction videos at 90% reacting to what's going on while it's happening and only like 10% max is it about your opinions and interpretations after the video. (despite what singing teachers think...)

Sorry you feel that way. I don't do the whole fake dramatic reaction thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ When I'm listening to a song, whether it be at home by myself or hearing a song for the first time at a show, I'm listening and paying attention to it. You can't thoroughly grasp a song, especially with fast paced lyrics if you're freaking out every 2 seconds. 😂 But there's a lot of channels out there that do that, so I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. 😊

    • @jonchicoine

@@nikkireviews Nikki, those other fake reactions are even worse. You simply don't have a very expressive face (imo)... many other's seem incapable of masking their emotions and what they're thinking. I apologize for sounding so harsh... Good for you that you're pursing this and I wish you the best of luck. My only advice would to watch some of the more successful reaction channels and pay attention to why you enjoy them... and then, DO Your own thing :) 1 other piece of advice, ignore all the negative comments! There's just so many trolls on the planet, dont' let them get you down :) Seriously, 99% of the negative reactions you get in your comments are not sincere.

A calm reaction doesn't mean no emotion. I fully connected with the song and explained why afterwards. I felt less comfortable in front of the camera when I recorded that one too..but I know there's definitely more expressive reactors out there if that's what you're looking for. You're never gonna find me doing over the top reactions but they will be genuine. 🎵

That's cause it was a girl watching a screen lol. My reaction and thoughts were at the end.. I always pay close attention to the song/lyrics cause there wouldn't be much for me to talk about if I didn't. I don't go crazy when I listen to a song for the first time, but my thoughts are genuine. But the good news is, there are many other review channels out there, I hope you find the kinda content you're looking for.
