It seems counter intuitive that the record for the 1,000 is less than double the time for the 500 record. In other words one would think the 500 would be done in less than half the time as the 1,000, but unlike other racing sports (running, rowing, swimming, etc) the speed skaters seem to be able to continuously accelerate for up to about a minute or so before reaching a peak speed. Cyclists might also be able to exhibit a rather long acceleration period, but it certainly doesn't happen in running and swimming where fatigue sets in a lot quicker and there isn't any rolling or gliding.

Not really counterintuitive, think of it this way, the first 500m of a 1000 started at a dead stop, the second 500m of a 1000 started at 30+mph
