  • In this video we check out a noise coming from the rear end of this Kia Sportage. Kia has a service TSB regarding this noise and they claim it is unrepairable and the whole $1450.00 viscous coupler unit must be replaced!! HA! This sounds like a challenge :)
    Seal: 19-00-044-027
    Bearing: KBC 6008Z

"Let's pull it out, take it apart, and see if we can fix it before throwing 1500 bucks at it...." I cheered inside when Eric said that! Even cooler that you can make the car front-wheel drive until the parts come in!

SMA: Your right but don`t forget to factor in the poor guy on the line who works flat rate. The writers and service manager are tapping on his production too. The dealerships want to make as much money as they can. I don`t know how the mechs can make money anymore with warranty repair times being unfair.

I have a local guy near me. Just a small one man shop, he has done me plenty of solids over the years, and he is first on my recommendations list. It's hard to find a good car guy.
I'm us also too cheap by far, never up sells you in parts and has silly hour charge. Probably not changed in 20 years. He also refuses to charge for fixes he diagnoses wrongly. I had a loose wire causing a 2005 laguna to drop power at about 1500 rpm. He
' fixed' a few things before he traced a broken wire which he soldered and charged me abit a tenner. He must of spent 3 days on it.
His reason what, "if I was a better michanic I'd of diagnosed it correctly first time, so it's not your fault". I recon most would of just said "this thst and the other also need changing".
I felt embarrassed that day, a bit like I robbed him. It wasn't like we was friends back then, I'd orobay been going his garage 2 years, so probably my 3rd or 4th time. He defo made it back in future business and my recommendations. Both my children use him now also.
Also a very nice bloke I've come to find out over th years.

Very refreshing to see a real mechanic who at least tries to repair something rather than replace it. It's also helpful when your customer isn't on the phone every 15 minutes to see if it's done yet and as cheaply as possible. Usually when I repair something like that (which isn't often any more) something else inside fails in short order and we end up eating it cuz we worked on it last and are referred to as hacks. I guess it's a BIG city thing. Maybe that's why Kia recommends the whole unit to be replaced. In our trade who knows. You are very entertaining to watch and you do make me laugh sometimes. A good thing after a rough day.

This almost felt like a "day in the life of" video with all the cameo's, jokes, and repairs you had going on.
I guess this is what the old timers mean when they say "back in the day people fixed things, now we trash and replace".
With the ease of this repair, it makes me wonder what's really going on when they send those service bulletins out. Yes we all know car companies are in business to make money. But is there really any excuse for this? Are they charging for the new part, but actually only replacing the bearing. Makes me ponder their motive.
    Outstanding video man!

I don't own a Kia, and I had no intention of watching this, but I found myself hanging out at the workbench, totally absorbed with how you worked your way through the problem of disassembling the differential unit. It's refreshing to see a real mechanic, not just a "replacement" mechanic like most dealerships today have. You learned like I did, you learned to to take something apart and replace a component or part of an item instead of replacing the entire item. Although I am not a mechanic, I was taught by my Dad who was a Mechanical Engineer by profession but a mechanic at heart. He had nothing but disdain for modern day mechanics especially those overpaid flunkies at dealerships. I wish he was still alive today, I would show him your videos and I'm sure it would bring a smile to his face. I still, at 65 years old do all my own repairs to my vehicles if I can physically do so, but when it's too big a job, especially electrical, I have a trusted mechanic I've been dealing with for many years who's usually up to the task.

I was pondering this morning why Kia or any manufacturer would do things this way. Then it came to me. In order to break into the American market, Kia like a few others makes had to offer these very competitive (and long) warranties. But supporting warranties in the American markets is EXPENSIVE because American labor is super expensive.
So...they call the parts "unservicable" so that the part can only be swapped at the dealership to keep the American labor to an absolute minimum, while the original core is sent back to the foreign country where the vehicle is manufactured to be fixed with labor that is a tiny fraction of what it would have been in America. Plus if you have a small team of unskilled workers that only fix this one single component - they don't even need to be technicians, they can literally be teenagers with only the most basic training in this one single job.
It makes good business sense, but it is ultimately dishonest to say a part is non-serviceable when it is completely serviceable.

Leon Springs Boys TV actually, a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone is probably one of the best penetrating oils to use, only thing better is to use toluene instead of acetone. with the toluene it eats away the rust on fasteners along with dissolves all forms of thread locker and soaks way deep into the threads. on older farmer told me about that, didn't belive him but have never gone back, i keep a mix in a little hand squirter oil can and a big premix in an old acetone can marked what it is.

The fact that you attempted this without knowing if you would be able to truly fix it then giving the vehicle back at 2wd in the meantime to the customer makes all the mechanic by my area look like crap! It's easier for them to tell me " yeah you have to spent the 1500 there's no other way". You truly go above and beyond for your customers and that's a rare find now. Because of this I subbed! and thank you for your hard work and dedication, if you are in the n.y area I would be more than happy to have you service my vehicle..be safe brother.

Eric O. You are one of my favorite RUclips auto techs. always entertaining, always informative, and my favorite, always honest. As a fellow mechanic, I can easily say that the industry needs more people like you. My favorite part of your videos is seeing how similarily we work. Rip and tear and learn as we go. usually in pursuit of saving the customer a few beans. Keep up the fantastic work and the customers will keep on coming. And I will continue to learn more and more as I watch. South Main Auto for the Win. If I was in the area I'd love to work for you.

Man, that has to be a record. I've never seen one guy take so much crap for not using brake cleaner. It's obviously become a trademark, and I'd like to say I'm impressed, but I still have yet to see you jump out of a trash can yelling at the camera, soooo....... Baby steps. One day....if you work really hard at it....
Seriously though, I thought Hannah was your summertime helper. I assumed she was a high school kid making some summer cash. Is she a full-time apprentice now? Kudos to her if she's learning the trade. Apologies if you've already answered this as I tend to jump around the vids and don't watch them in chronological order, or always read all the comments.
Quick note on bearings: I agree with some of the others that you might consider industrial suppliers. Depending on who you use, they might be able to drop-ship from a manufacturer or other supplier in your area the next day. Also, you referred to that as a sealed bearing. It is actually just shielded. When you see Z or ZZ after a bearing number, that is a metal shielded bearing. RS or 2RS after the number is a sealed bearing that actually has a BUNA-N lip seal over the metal shield.

Something that would take kia dealer an hour to do, (or 2) plus small cost in parts, were differed to spend 1k (plus probably another 1k in labor) or get rid of the car. un freaking real. passing on their laziness/overhead to the customer. imagine all the people suffering because of this noise because they cant afford the 1k to fix it. Took one guy a few hours to find a solution to this problem, where kia just said replace it. WOW!

great first time diagnosis . My 2007 2.2 diesel Citroen C6 . Handbrake cables are so corroded with broken rusty strands of wire . that I decided to replace them. One Citroen parts supplioer claimed the electric parking brake assembly is only supplied as a complete unit . insane money .. so i asked the guy who I bought it off and he insisted the parking brake cables were listed separately in the parts list .. A trip to another Citroen Dealership and the nice spares guy ordered them for me and even gave 10% discount . I had to make an appointment to collect the parts because of the Chinese CCP Killer bio virus weapon lock down in Portugal. €260 euros . fitted the cables myself . a real fiddly job but at 75 years old still possible . Keep up your brilliant and informative videos .. I love all of them .

Great job going a little further to save the customer $$$.
I took my Subaru to a dealership for a crank no start. They said my aftermarket fuel pump (walbro 255) had too much pressure and I needed a new OEM fuel pump ($650).
I declined, and took it to a 2nd shop for their opinion.
    Bad fuel pressure regulator.
The dealership apparently was not able to diagnose a bad pressure regulator..
Everyone yearns for a mechanic like you: capable of diagnostics, willing to try and save the customer money.
