The Earth trembled when these two giants walked upon it. It warms my heart to see these two generations of important Jazz artists playing side by side. Especially following Louis's initial hostility to the Bop revolution.
At 2:13, Dizzy accidentally spat on Louis's face when singing about his "parasol". Louis wiped his face and replied "Your parasol is juicy, boy". That's why people laughed so hard after that line.
This is the joke, but i doubt its what happened. Actually, Louis made this joke many times on stage when singing beside another person, like this. I'm not sure if it was just Louis that played the gag, but he's the only one I've seen use it more than once. I love this performance so much with these two greats. Like others have said, i could listen to it over and over. I wish the sound was better. Happy 100th Birthday Dizzy. Oct 21, 1917. Wish you were still here.
Another tidbit at 2:25... when Dizzy said, "Let it pitter-patter, let it pitter-patter, Don't mind the rain" Louis said, "Swiss Kriss," a laxative he endorsed back in the days!!
Thank you, Byklon. You've put into words something I've felt for years. That fact is the reason why I've been playing Pops here on RUclips this afternoon.
@@giantspiderproductions3356 , Miles played a sophisticated musician's music requiring an advanced ear to make sense of the progressions and harmony. He even played with his back to the audience. He largely diminished his reputation by alienating himself from the crowd with attitude and massive cocaine use. Louis and Dizzy were more pop music yes, but they entertained and improvised better than anyone. Miles isn't even close in that regard. Imo of course.
Balthazar Nietzsche that Louis accepting the engagement on this highly visible Timex show showed that the "olive branch" of beboppers to Dixielanders was received and jazz was alive and well for all stylists as well as for all audiences.
It's so amusing to hear the difference in the playing styles of Dizzy and Satchmo. Both are brilliant trumpet players and truly masters of their craft but they both play such different styles of trumpet and singing! Its just awesome to watch.
There was brief tension between the two generation at one point but it's wonderful to see them together on the stage. Two very important, innovative giants of music ❤❤❤
I can see the difference between traditional jazz and Bebop though this performance. While Dizzy plays with modern chord interpretation and elaborated rhythm pattern, Louis plays with familiar chords and basic rhythm. I don't want to say which is better or not. Both have their good points respectively, and both are indeed SWINGING.
dizzy focuses more on just playing notes through the chords and enjoying his musician knowledge, while louis focuses more on creating a melody to the chords as if it were its own tune
In Dizzy's autobiography there's a photo of him and Louis, with several other people, having a good laugh at a party at Dizzy's house. They were giants and great people too.
Sheer genius! Two masters of their craft sharing the same stage just jamming for fun. Nothing this side of the century comes close! God bless satchmo & dizzy x
These are arguably the two greatest American musicians ever. They are easily the two most important inovators in jazz. Without them, jazz would still be in the stone age.
I like what Wynton Marsalis said that Dizzy did for jazz in the 1940’s what Louis did for jazz in the 1920’s...heavily influenced the art for others to reach for and surpass. And that’s what the both of them did. 🙂🎼🎶🎺
G-d bless pops and diz for bringing so much joy to the world thru music. when you listen with your heart, it's a special blessing from these greats of african-americans' gift to the world:jaaazzzzz.
What kind of world are we living in. Damn near everyone is all about commercialized fake-ass music and refuse to listen to artistic passionate music like this. 35 dislikes? We can't all enjoy the same stuff, but how could you not love this music.
Why doesn't this century have anyone that can do this? We need people like Dizzy and Satchmo in the music industry today. If you happen to know of anyone like them, that plays today, please let me know.
Glad that I got to see Dizzy Gillespie and his band perform in the 1980's at my college. It was an amazing night of beauteous music that I felt like I was barely touching the ground as I walked home that night. Wish I had seen Louis perform in concert as well. That would have been lovely. Thanks!!!!!! :{ )
What is there not to Love about this? Something in my Brain starts to groove when I listen to Bebop Jazz. One of the best anti depressants on the market. Fantastic!!
Man, this is a fantastic duet with two legends of jazz. Thank God videos like this are available to the public. That being said, Dizzy's neck thing freaks me out every time.
I love this song. Especially the beginning. And that dude in the back interrupting his scatting is hilarious! Yet it adds to the richness of the song. The talent of these men are just astounding!

Probably the two most influential jazz musicians to ever play a trumpet.
Miles davis.
@lyric-music He was influential on the music, but these two changed the way the trumpet was to be played.
Don't forget the great trumpet & singing of Roy'LittleJazz' Eldridge !! 🎺🎙

Exactly, Sweatzaloatl. I'e said for over 30 years: he makes me happy
John 16 and Mr. Kevin Gillespie at KevRow University cured my depression.
Ah, happy Bebop trumpeting meets, early New Orleans trumpeting.
Let's not forget to mention Jackie Gleason; thanks for bringing these two together.
Two Trumpet Greats.. it didn't get any better then that. And the awesome thing is they had fun doing it. R.I.P Gentlemen.
